Abstract

L’articolo esamina la documentazione relativa alle curtes fiscali di Guastalla e Luzzara nel periodo compreso tra IX e XIII secolo. Guastalla e Luzzara furono concesse dall’imperatrice Angelberga al monastero di San Sisto di Piacenza nell’877; sul finire del XII secolo divennero oggetto di una disputa, conclusasi nel 1227 a favore del comune di Cremona. L’articolo sostiene due tesi principali: che le più sostanziose fonti di introiti garantiti dal possesso delle due curtes trovassero la loro ragione nell’origine fiscale di Guastalla e Luzzara; e che la tenacia con cui i Cremonesi cercarono di sottrarle a San Sisto si spiega con il mutato contesto economico dei decenni a cavallo tra XII e XIII secolo.

Abstract

Il saggio è dedicato all’analisi stilistica e iconografica di alcuni architravi scolpiti che ornano i portali delle chiese di Piacenza, una delle località più vivaci nel panorama artistico nord-italiano del XII secolo. L’eredità delle opere realizzate per la cattedrale cittadina dalla bottega di Nicholaus riecheggia nei rilievi delle chiese di San Matteo, Sant’Ilario e dell’inedito portale di Santo Stefano. Attraverso lo studio delle testimonianze storiche superstiti, il confronto con opere del medesimo periodo e contesto e una rinnovata attenzione per i contenuti iconografici, l’intento del saggio è quello di dimostrare la portata simbolica delle raffigurazioni ospitate sugli architravi. Un’attenzione particolare è riservata alla inusuale iconografia dell’Incredulità di san Tommaso presente sul portale della chiesa di Sant’Ilario. Il tentativo di rilettura delle iscrizioni e l’inquadramento di tale opera nel contesto socio-culturale della Piacenza di tardo XII secolo permette di formulare nuove ipotesi sulla connessione tra scelte iconografiche, istanze di rinnovamento spirituale della società e rituali liturgici, sottesa alla realizzazione di sculture che ornano significativamente le porte di accesso ai luoghi sacri, vie di salvezza per i fedeli penitenti.

Abstract

Pierluigi Farnese (1503–47) was the 1st Duke of Parma and Piacenza (r.1545–7). His fortune heavily relied on the political and diplomatic ability of his father, Paul III (1468–1549). Pierluigi took an active and severe attitude towards local feudatories; as a result, he had many enemies and was assassinated in September 1547. While Pierluigi was unsuccessful as a ruler, he was aware of the impact of the arts for his political strategies: he collected artworks and tried to establish a musical household. This article presents previously unknown documents showing Pierluigi’s attempts to recruit musicians for Piacenza, including a travelling band from Brescia; a certain Girolamo Leone, presumably a singer of the Brescian cathedral; the Genoa musician ‘Jacomo tenorista’; and the Roman musician ‘Bolognia’, presumably Galeazzo Baldi, member of Paul III’s musica segreta. Abstract

This paper wants to be a frame about the situation of poorest people in Piacenza during the late Napoleonic age (1810-1814). In that period the French domination replaced the catholic Church in the assistance and caring of people in need, organizing a State service. To complete this transformation, they used part of the money raised by ecclesiastic dispossession, principally lands and monasteries. Today we can study this period of transformations thanks to the administrative efficiency of the French domination whom registered a lot of information about the social marginality’s phenomenon. The French domination brought an important modernization of social and economic sectors in the modern history of both Piacenza and Italy; it also brought an exploitation related to the European hegemony’s project pursued by Napoleon.

Ambulance crew’s choosing of appropriate destination hospital for trauma patients can affect survival and morbidity outcomes. Aim of the present study is to devise a decision-making algorithm in order to allow the best choice of destination hospital for trauma patients and to apply it on an electronic device able to facilitate the decision made by ambulance staff. The method used was analysis of literature data, context and workload with a retrospective observational study. A comparison between the destination hospitals actually chosen and those that could have been chosen with the Piacenza trauma algorithm has been applied. The data shows a 9.5% (P>0.10) more advantageous change in appropriateness in the choice of medical facility and a 1.4% increase in admissions to the Emergency Department of the provincial hospital. The creation and use of a medical protocol and its consequent installation on an electronic device (tablet) that can be shared over a computer platform could help medical staff make appropriate pre-hospital choices as regards the destination hospital for trauma patients.

Recentemente è stata ancora ribadita dal Ministero della Difesa l’importanza del processo di valorizzazione del patrimonio immobiliare militare dismesso. Gli effetti critici connessi alla dismissione di questi immobili possono – e devono – essere interpretati in termini di opportunità di ampio respiro: riqualificazione urbana, architettonica e ambientale; rilancio della città e del suo territorio; sostenibilità; partecipazione e concertazione; interazioni sinergiche tra pubblico e privato. Piacenza è tra le realtà maggiormente investite da questi processi; il dibattito pubblico sul futuro delle aree militari è aperto, specialmente per le Caserme Bixio e Nicolai (Comparto Nord San Sisto/Cittadella), sede storica del Genio Pontieri che dovrebbe essere il primo dei siti da valorizzare.

The Civic Museums of Palazzo Farnese in Piacenza are the first Italian museum and one of the first five in Europe to achieve an application based on advanced technologies related to proximity (beacon) and one of the first in the world to adapt it on Android system. After testing the technology platform I.M.APP on a section of the Museums, Ultraviolet App, creator of the application, extended the network of beacons to the entire city of Piacenza. Now, walking through the streets of town centre with own smartphone or tablet, the visitor will not have the unpleasant feeling of loss, and having to browse through pages and pages to find out what is that monument, church, building or square that captured his attention, because, automatically, will find everything hi wanted to know the city and its artistic, historical, architectural beauty, on their mobile device, without move a finger, thanks to a small beacon.

Abstract

Come si misura la distanza che intercorre tra noi e un edificio rimasto sulla carta? Questa domanda apparentemente pretestuosa può esserci utile per incardinare delle riflessioni sull’uso del Disegno nello studio dell’architettura non realizzata, soprattutto quella del primo ‘900. Non a caso, nell’approfondire un progetto rimasto tale di Luigi Moretti per la città di Piacenza (la locale “Caserma-Teatro G.I.L.”) si è voluto prioritariamente verificare un metodo che prevede l’applicazione di alcuni degli strumenti propri della Scienza della Rappresentazione. I culmini di questo processo lento di decodifica e successiva esegesi sono stati certamente l’analisi grafica (che ha permesso di discretizzare l’opera di Moretti in parti certamente notevoli ma autonome dai punti di vista tettonico, sintattico, spaziale o funzionale) e la modellazione tridimensionale digitale (che ha restituito quella profondità prospettico-chiaroscurale non percepibile solo attraverso l’osservazione dei disegni di progetto). Gli esiti della ricerca coincidono con le immagini a corredo del testo, che assurgono a divenire vero e proprio strumento di verifica del pensiero progettuale dell’architetto romano. How do we measure the distance between us and unbuilt architecture? This apparently specious question may be useful to hinge some reflections on the use of Drawing in the study of unbuilt architecture, especially that of the early 20th century. In fact, in investigating a project that has remained unrealized by Luigi Moretti for the city of Piacenza (the local "Caserma-Teatro G.I.L."), the main aim was to verify a method that foresees the application of some of the instruments of the Science of Representation. The culmination of this slow process of decoding and subsequent exegesis was certainly graphic analysis (which made it possible to discretize Moretti's work into parts that are certainly notable but autonomous from a tectonic, syntactic, spatial or functional point of view) and three-dimensional digital modelling (which gave back that perspective-chiaroscuro depth that cannot be perceived solely through observation of the project drawings). The results of the research coincide with the images accompanying the text, which become a true tool for verifying the Roman architect's design thinking.

Abstract

When television has shown a fine picture and explained it with a brazen lie, idiots believe that everything is clear. The demi-elite is content to know that almost everything is obscure, ambivalent, “constructed” by unknown codes. A more exclusive elite would like to know what is true, hard as it is to distinguish in each particular case, despite all their access to special knowledge and confidences. Which is why they would like to get to know the method of truth, though their love usually remains unrequited. Machiavelli's theoretical work resembles a Florentine Renaissance palazzo in its unique mixture of sophistication and self-imposed austerity. The difficulty in interpreting him is to no small extent due to the fact that his texts, openly or obliquely, simultaneously operate on several different levels, of which at least three can be distinguished here. The first, and the most widely recognized, level is that of principle, or theory. Machiavelli's writings are replete with generalizing statements, rules, axioms, and maxims that taken together form the core of his realist theory of political action, which in many quarters has earned him the title of the founder of modern political science. Second, there is the level of ideology. As recent scholars have been able to demonstrate, and as we have seen in the course of this study, Machiavelli's work draws on, and engages, many of the main themes of classical and Renaissance political thought and contemporary Florentine political debate. MID-CENTURY CICERONIANISM As I said at the beginning of Chapter 1, the history of humanist political thought before about 1620 (like the history of another aspect of humanist culture, the fine arts), can almost be told exclusively from the two urban centres of Europe, Italy and the Netherlands. While there were individual figures of great originality and influence outside these centres (such as, above all, Montaigne), any student of the period must be struck by the astonishing wealth of intellectual material produced in the great cities; it was still to Italy in particular that scholars in the studia humanitatis, poets and dramatists all over Europe looked throughout the century, and in the early seventeenth century it was possible for Trajano Boccalini to remark proudly that whereas the books of ‘Trans-Alpin writers’ were merely ‘laborious, and miraculous for the variety of reading that was in them’, Italians ‘labour with matter taken out of the Mine of their own ingeniosity, with much sweat and toil, not with stuff borrowed from other Writers’ (I ragguagli p. 23). Moreover, it was in these two areas above all that the central political problem of the late sixteenth century was confronted and experienced as a problem: the phenomenon of the Spanish hegemony. Not since antiquity had one nation ruled so many disparate bits of the Old World, let alone the New. Charles V inherited in 1517 rule over Castile, Aragon, Upper Navarre, the Netherlands, Austria and the Kingdom of Naples; he became Holy Roman Emperor in 1519 and acquired the Duchy of Milan as an imperial fief in 1535, integrating it into the Spanish monarchy. ‘God Almighty raised up these two great princes sworn enemies to one another, and emulous of one another's greatness; an emulation that has cost the lives of two hundred thousand persons, and brought a million of families into utter ruin; when after all neither the one nor the other obtained any other advantage by the dispute than the bare repentance of having been the causers of so many miseries, and of the effusion of so much Christian blood.’ Many historians of the Habsburg–Valois wars have followed the broad outline of Blaise de Monluc's retrospective assessment, fascinated by what appears at first glance to be a destructive and almost incomprehensible duel between two highly cultured Renaissance princes: the Habsburg Charles V, and the Valois Francis I. Yet the wars, which took place in an age that produced both Erasmus and Machiavelli, involved many Christian and Muslim powers. They continued after Charles and Francis were dead, and their repercussions were felt throughout the known world either directly – as participants or victims of the fighting – or indirectly, since the struggle consumed Christian resources and enabled the Ottoman state to expand. And while the conflict was extremely destructive, states and individuals – such as Monluc – participated in the wars because they also brought considerable benefits. As the second decade of the sixteenth century dawned, however, it seemed that war had been banished from Christendom. 33. Italy and the papacy.

Abstract

In the states of the Italian peninsula, as in the rest of central and western Europe, the news of the activities and doctrines of Luther, followed by those of Zwingli and later by those of the Anabaptists, the Anti-Trinitarians and Calvin, fell on ground ready to receive it. Among the numerous ecclesiastics, memories of Savonarola's preaching were not always propitious; thus the best-known Italian translator of Holy Scripture along Lutheran lines, the Florentine Antonio Brucioli, was violently hostile to Savonarola. But there were the hopes raised by the Fifth Lateran Council (1512–17) especially in certain Florentine and allied circles in contact with the Venetian patrician and Camaldolese hermit, Blessed Paolo Giustiniani (1476–1528); there was a desire for greater morality and austerity of life in the laity, the hierarchy and the curia; people were fully aware of the ‘abuses’ originally devised to meet the needs (in money and staff) of the financial administration and the centralised policy of the church, not just the needs of the Holy See as an Italian state in matters of politics and war. There was also a strong desire for a more spiritual conception of Catholic religious life: for men like Giustiniani (and his friends included Gasparo Contarini, a Venetian nobleman, later to become famous as a cardinal) the consequence of such an infusion of the spirit occupied pride of place. These leanings were not in any way meant to affect the spheres of dogma, liturgy, discipline, traditions, the fundamental structure of the church, or the papal authority, but would, it was hoped, be capable of supplying these with energy enough to purify the church ‘in capite et in membris’. 34. Social relations and control of resources in an area of transit: eastern Liguria, sixteenth to seventeenth centuries.

Abstract

One of the main characteristics of the economy and life of Ligurian communities in modern times has been the structural shortage of cereal production. In terms of historical analysis, this reality implies the study of notable problems, such as levels of domestic consumption, forms of subsistence, integration of town and village economies and their dependency on regional and international markets, the nature of the obligations to commercialize and articulate local and extra-local exchanges. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the products of Ligurian coastal communities which could assure the necessary circuit of exchange and supply of wheat were oil and, to a lesser extent, wine. Another characteristic of Liguria – shared by many Mediterranean regions and communities – is the interdependence, often within limited ranges, of different ecological areas: a richer coastal strip adjacent to poor valley and mountainous zones, particularly lacking in food products. In these areas the shortage of wheat, compensated only partially by chestnuts and minor cereals, was rendered the more serious by the absence of oil and wine or of the opportunities offered by the sea (fishing and navigation). Because of this, access to necessary integrative resources became particularly dramatic. The problem of economic integration is one of the critical points of historical and anthropological literature dealing with agricultural societies and with the necessary links between communities and society as a whole. Among all the parchments used as cover material for notarial registers in the city of Piacenza, it stand out a bifolium containing a part of the most ancient communal statutes that dates back to the second half of 13th century. these unreleased statutes are meant to be added to the list of the already known ones. this paper aims to point out some aspects of the political context in which the statutes wereedited. In this respect, it will be worth to take into account the clash between the milites and the Popolo of Piacenza, the fight against the Papacy and the Empire, and finally the lordship of Oberto Pelavicino, who controlled the city from 1253 to 1266. this paper will also provide a picture of the political support he received from the Popolo of Piacenza and the resulting relationship between them. Abstract

Roberto Scarpioni and colleagues recount their experience with the Covid-19 epidemic at the Nephrology and Dialysis Center of the "Guglielmo da Saliceto" Hospital in Piacenza, where everybody is still fighting to this moment to contain the spread of the disease and face an increasingly unsustainable clinical situation. Piacenza is only 15 km away from the main cluster of cases in the country (Codogno, in the Lodi province) and, after the closure of the Hospital in Codogno, saw an escalation in the number of patients testing positive to Covid-19. The authors describe their efforts and the practices they adopted to contain the spread of the disease among inpatients visiting the hospital's Hemodialysis Clinic. They also reflect on some of the data available on the 25/03/2020, such as the number of patients testing positive and the mortality rate, unfortunately very high. Abstract

An integrated petrographic, colorimetric and capillary water absorption study of decayed flagstones of Granito Bianco (white granite) Montorfano from Piazza Cavalli (Piacenza, Italy) can provide important clues on the formation of yellowish patina on leucocratic granites used for buildings and decorative purposes. The granitic flagstones constituting the pavement of Piazza Cavalli rest on a basement consisting of iron-rich (Fe2O3 = 6.53-7.37 wt%) clay bricks. After more than two centuries of exposition to the urban environment, these surfaces acquired a yellowish patina characterised by a significantly higher yellow component that do not occur on the fresh surfaces in the native quarry of Mergozzo (NW Italy). In particular, the intensity of the yellowish patina is not controlled by the modal amount of biotite, the main Fe-rich mineral of Granito Bianco Montorfano. The results of the capillary water absorption test indicate that the aged Granito Bianco Montorfano flagstones have higher water transport capability than samples recently extracted from the Mergozzo quarry. The capillary water rise is controlled by inter/intragranular porosity of the granite flagstones. In particular, iron-rich compounds preferentially occur along the pores, indicating that iron can be efficiently transported by advection from the clay brick basement towards the surface. The results of this study show that (i) external iron sources coupled with iron advection are essential to the development of a Fe-rich yellowish patina on white granites, (ii) the release of iron from femic minerals contribute to the development of rust stains, but cannot account for the yellowish patina covering large surfaces of white granite flagstones.
