With the expansion of wireless mobile networks into both the daily lives of individuals as well as into the widely developing market of connected devices, communication is an increasingly attractive target for attackers. As the complexity of mobile cellular systems grows and the respective countermeasures are implemented to secure data transmissions, the attacks have become increasingly sophisticated on the one hand, but at the same time the system complexity can open up expanded opportunities for security and privacy breaches. After an in-depth summary of possible entry points to attacks to mobile networks, this paper first briefly reviews the basic principles of the physical layer implementation of 4G/5G systems, then gives an overview of possible attacks from a physical layer perspective. It also provides an overview of the software frameworks and hardware tool-software defined radios currently in use for experimenting with 4G/5G mobile networks, and it discusses their basic capabilities. In the final part, the paper summarizes the currently most promising families of techniques to detect illegitimate base stations—the machine-learning-based, localization-based, and behavior-based methods. A 3-D heterogeneous integration (3-D-HI) is poised to enable a new era of high-performance integrated circuits via a multitude of benefits, including a reduction in I/O power consumption and ability to tightly couple disparate technologies. However, a significant hurdle toward enabling a chiplet ecosystem is the standardization of 3-D die-to-die (D2D) interconnects that facilitate rapid integration. Technology-driven constraints highlighted in published works demonstrate that a unique approach to 3-D D2D interconnect design and implementation is required, while preserving the ability to customize the interconnect to accommodate future technology concerns and applications with minimal overhead. This article presents a framework to generate customized 3-D D2D interconnect physical layers (PHYs) that are simultaneously standard-compliant, physical-aware, and can be automatically integrated into all stacked chiplets. The generator framework leverages the Chisel hardware description language to allow designers to do the following: 1) compile a port list directly into a PHY; 2) automate design and physical design (PD); and 3) perform design space exploration of interconnect features (e.g., bump map pitch, clocking architecture, and others). The 3-D PHY generator framework and features detailed in this work can be used to produce a reference implementation for a standard like UCIe-3-D, representing a significant paradigm shift from current specification and design methodologies for 2.5-D D2D interconnect (e.g., UCIe) implementations. This work concludes with the results of a redundancy design space exploration tradeoff study, showing the benefits of a proposed spatial coding redundancy scheme in an example PHY using emulated 9- $\mu $ m hybrid bonding for a 4 Tx/4 Rx module array with 4:1 coding redundancy ratio.

M-ary Aggregate Spread Pulse Modulation (M-ASPM) is the physical layer (PHY) modulation technique that is well suited for use in low-power wide-area networks (LPWANs). Notably, M-ASPM combines high energy-per-bit efficiency, robustness, resistance to interference, and a number of other favorable technical characteristics, with the spread-spectrum ability to maintain the capacity of an uplink-focused network while extending its range. However, when all M-ASPM nodes transmit with the same average power, implementation of such capacity-preserving range extension may become impractical in complicated propagation environments with greatly varying path losses. Favorably, the efficiency of M-ASPM with constant-envelope pulses can be maintained effectively the same as the efficiency of transmitting a continuous constant-envelope waveform. Then the transmit power of different nodes can be adjusted, without sacrificing the transmission efficiency, to compensate for differences in the path attenuation. This enables us to significantly simplify planning and management of the network. In addition, such a variable-power approach generally increases the network capacity and the average energy efficiency of the nodes, as compared with the arrangement of the nodes with a constant transmit power. In this paper, we outline a practical approach to implementing such an energy-efficient M-ASPM power control, that can be used for scaling LPWANs with realistic desired and/or actual areal distributions of the uplink nodes under diverse propagation conditions.

Mobile communications have been undergoing a generational change every ten years or so. However, the time difference between the so-called “G’s” is also decreasing. While fifth-generation (5G) systems are becoming a commercial reality, there is already significant interest in systems beyond 5G, which we refer to as the sixth generation (6G) of wireless systems. In contrast to the already published papers on the topic, we take a top-down approach to 6G. More precisely, we present a holistic discussion of 6G systems beginning with lifestyle and societal changes driving the need for next-generation networks. This is followed by a discussion into the technical requirements needed to enable 6G applications, based on which we dissect key challenges and possibilities for practically realizable system solutions across all layers of the Open Systems Interconnection stack (i.e., from applications to the physical layer). Since many of the 6G applications will need access to an order-of-magnitude more spectrum, utilization of frequencies between 100 GHz and 1 THz becomes of paramount importance. As such, the 6G ecosystem will feature a diverse range of frequency bands, ranging from below 6 GHz up to 1 THz. We comprehensively characterize the limitations that must be overcome to realize working systems in these bands and provide a unique perspective on the physical and higher layer challenges relating to the design of next-generation core networks, new modulation and coding methods, novel multiple-access techniques, antenna arrays, wave propagation, radio frequency transceiver design, and real-time signal processing. We rigorously discuss the fundamental changes required in the core networks of the future, such as the redesign or significant reduction of the transport architecture that serves as a major source of latency for time-sensitive applications. This is in sharp contrast to the present hierarchical network architectures that are not suitable to realize many of the anticipated 6G services. While evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of key candidate 6G technologies, we differentiate what may be practically achievable over the next decade, relative to what is possible in theory. In this paper, the impact of the jamming signal on the secrecy performance of Energy Harvesting (EH) enabled dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying network is investigated. First, the security outage probability analysis is studied for conventional networks under a single passive eavesdropper attack. Then, the outage performance analysis in two cases regarding energy harvesting is investigated. Moreover, the proposed work enhances Physical Layer (PHY) security performance of two-hop relaying model using Cooperative Jamming Dual-Hop Techniques (CJDH). For this purpose, new closed-form expressions are derived for the outage probability of CJDH model in the presence of interference over Rayleigh fading channels. A power allocation optimization problem for energy harvesting protocol is formulated and solved for enhancing the system security. The derived analytical formulas herein are supported by numerical and simulation results to clarify the main contributions of the paper.

This paper presents a novel timing synchronization scheme for orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing communication systems by leveraging the phase shift caused by the timing error and the power difference between subcarriers. The proposed scheme is applied in the physical layer of vehicular ad hoc networks using the IEEE 802.11p standard. The proposed work joints three different estimators to present a robust synchronizer. The results demonstrate that the proposed estimators greatly improve the performance of the communication system and outperform other approaches in terms of the mean square error and the bit error rate. Although many techniques exist to transfer data from the widely distributed sensors that make up the Internet of Things (IoT) (e.g., using 3G/4G networks or cables), these methods are associated with prohibitively high costs, making them impractical for real-life applications. Recently, several emerging wireless technologies have been proposed to provide long-range communication for IoT sensors. Among these, LoRa has been examined for long-range performance. Although LoRa shows good performance for long-range transmission in the countryside, its radio signals can be attenuated over distance, and buildings, trees, and other radio signal sources may interfere with the signals. Our observations show that in urban areas, LoRa requires dense deployment of LoRa gateways (GWs) to ensure that indoor LoRa devices can successfully transfer data back to remote GWs. Wireless mesh networking is a solution for increasing communication range and packet delivery ratio (PDR) without the need to install additional GWs. This paper presents a LoRa mesh networking system for large-area monitoring of IoT applications. We deployed 19 LoRa mesh networking devices over an $800\,\,\text {m} \times 600$ m area on our university campus and installed a GW that collected data at 1-min intervals. The proposed LoRa mesh networking system achieved an average 88.49% PDR, whereas the star-network topology used by LoRa achieved only 58.7% under the same settings. Wireless sensor networks are emerging as an important area for communications. They enable a wealth of new applications including surveillance, building control, factory automation, and in-vehicle sensing. The sensor nodes have to operate under severe constraints on energy consumption and form factor, and provide the ability for precise selflocation of the nodes. These requirements can be fulfilled very well by various forms of ultra-wide-band (UWB) transmission technology. We discuss various techniques and tradeoffs in UWB systems and indicate that time-hopping and frequencyhopping impulse radio physical layers combined with simple multiple-access techniques like ALOHA are suitable designs. We also describe the IEEE 802.15.4a standard, an important system that adopts UWB impulse radio to ensure robust data communications and precision ranging. In order to accommodate heterogeneous networks, it uses specific modulation, coding, and ranging waveforms that can be detected well by both coherent and noncoherent receivers. This article details the evolution of Ethernet into Gigabit Ethernet and how this LAN-based technology has undergone major transformations over time. IEEE 802.15.4 standard specifies physical layer (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) sublayer protocols for low-rate and low-power communication applications. In this protocol, every 4-bit symbol is encoded into a sequence of 32 chips that are actually transmitted over the air. The 32 chips as a whole is also called a pseudonoise code (PN-Code). Due to complex channel conditions such as attenuation and interference, the transmitted PN-Code will often be received with some PN-Code chips corrupted. In this paper, we conduct a systematic analysis on these errors occurring at chip level. We find that there are notable error patterns corresponding to different cases. We then show that recognizing these patterns enables us to identify the channel condition in great details. We believe that understanding what happened to the transmission in our way can potentially bring benefit to channel coding, routing, and error correction protocol design. Finally, we propose Simple Rule, a simple yet effective method based on the chip error patterns to infer the link condition with an accuracy of over 96 percent in our evaluations.
