Objective: To evaluate the COVID-19 vaccination status and related characteristics of Turkish healthcare workers practicing chest medicine. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among the Turkish Thoracic Society members. The survey was started on May 17, 2021, and kept open for seven weeks. The 39-item survey included the COVID-19 vaccination status and demographic, clinical, and occupational characteristics. Results: Of 378 healthcare workers participated in the survey, 354 (93.7%) reported receiving at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. A total of 323 (91.2%) healthcare workers received CoronaVac vs. BioNTech/Pfizer in 31 (8.8%). In the CoronaVac group, 77 (23.8%) contracted COVID-19 when not fully vaccinated, and 13 (4.0%) when fully vaccinated; however, 16 (51.6%) healthcare workers in the BioNTech/Pfizer group got COVID-19 when not fully vaccinated, but any fully vaccinated participants did not contract COVID-19 (P=0.003). Regarding vaccine dosing, 328 (86.8%) were fully vaccinated, while 50 (13.2%) were not. Unlike gastroenteropancreatic NENs where therapeutic armamentarium clearly increased over the last decade, everolimus represented the only clinical practical innovation for lung NET patients over the last years. Therefore, for lung NETs, a multidisciplinary discussion within a dedicated team remains critical for an adequate decision-making. Although the main regulatory authorities considered the everolimus-related evidence is enough to approve the drug in advanced lung NETs, several clinical features deserve to be discussed. In this review, we systemically and critically analysed the main clinical studies including patients with advanced lung NETs receiving everolimus. Furthermore, we reported the biological and clinical background of everolimus in lung NET setting. In the Corona Vac group, 77 (23.8%) contracted COVID-19 when not fully vaccinated, and 13 (4.0%) when fully vaccinated; however, 16 (51.6%) healthcare workers in the BioNTech/Pfizer group got COVID-19 when not fully vaccinated, but any fully vaccinated participants did not contract COVID-19 (P=0.003). Regarding vaccine dosing, 328 (86.8%) were fully vaccinated, while 50 (13.2%) were not. Multiple regression analysis for being a non-fully vaccinated healthcare worker demonstrated a significant relationship with having any SARS-CoV-2 infection history (adjusted OR 9.57, 95% CI 3.93-23.26, P<0.001) and being a non-physician healthcare worker (adjusted OR 5.86, 95% CI 2.11-16.26, P=0.001), but a significant negative relationship with full-time working at the time of survey (adjusted OR 0.13,95% CI 0.03-0.56, P=0.006). Conclusions: Although a majority of healthcare workers were fully vaccinated, occupational and non-occupational characteristics were related to being non-fully vaccinated. Active surveillance regarding the COVID-19 vaccination in healthcare workers is necessary to address specific parameters as barriers to vaccination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• The medium- and long-term effects of COVID-19 infection on pulmonary function are still unknown. • The COVID-19 pandemic adversely affected healthcare professionals, inflicting a heavy burden on the healthcare systems of countries. • Healthcare professionals with persistent complaints who contracted COVID-19 and returned to work using pulmonary function tests, the 6-minute walk test (6MWT), and the diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) test. The medium- and long-term effects of COVID-19 infection on pulmonary function are still unknown. The present study aimed to investigate the pulmonary functions in healthcare professionals who had persistent complaints after contracting COVID-19 and returning to work. The study included COVID-19-infected healthcare professionals from the Düzce University Medical Faculty Hospital who volunteered to participate. Medical histories, medical records, pulmonary function tests, the diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO) test, and the 6-minute walk test (6MWT) were used to collect data from all participants. The study included 53 healthcare professionals, with an average age of 38 ± 10 years (min: 24 years and max: 71 years), including 29 female (54.7%) and 24 male (45.3%) participants. Of the participants, 22.6% were smokers, 35.8% (19 individuals) had comorbidities, and 17% (9 individuals) were hospitalized. The mean length of stay was 9 ± 4 days (mean ± standard deviation). The most prevalent symptoms were weakness (88.7%), muscle aches (67.9%), inability to smell/taste (60.4%), headache (54.7%), fever (45.3%), cough (41.5%), and shortness of breath (37.7%). The mean time to return to work after a positive polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test for COVID-19 was 18 ± 13 days. The average time among post-disease pulmonary function, 6MW, and DLCO tests was 89 ± 36 days (min: 15 and max: 205). The DLCO level decreased in 39.6% (21) of the participants. Female participants had a significantly higher rate of decreased DLCO levels than male participants (25% vs. 55.2%, P =.026). DLCO levels were significantly higher in participants with long-term persistent complaints (P =.043). The later the time to return to work, the lower the DLCO value (r = −0.290 and P =.035). The 6MWT distance was positively correlated with hemoglobin and lymphocyte levels at the time of the disease onset and negatively correlated with D-dimer levels. The most prevalent symptoms during the control visits were shortness of breath/effort dyspnea (24.6%), weakness (9.5%), and muscle aches (7.6%). Significant persistent complaints (47.2%) and low DLCO levels (39.6%) were observed in healthcare professionals during control visits at a mean time of 3 months after the COVID-19 infection. Symptoms and spirometry measurements, including DLCO, may be helpful in the follow-up of healthcare professionals who contracted COVID-19. La Universidad Intercultural del Estado de Hidalgo (UICEH) fue fundada en 2012 y está ubicada en el municipio de Tenango de Doria Hidalgo en México. Dentro del modelo de universidades interculturales que rige a estas Universidades Interculturales (UIS) se establece que este tipo de Instituciones deben incorporar los saberes de las comunidades indígenas donde inciden, en este caso la UICEH ubicada en la Región Otomí-Tepehua con la tarea de producir diferentes materiales que incorporan conocimientos indígenas y occidentales. En ese tenor, este artículo presenta los resultados de una investigación de un material titulado: “Diálogo de saberes. Comunidades indígenas y universitarios”, cuyo objetivo principal es analizar cómo a través del material “Diálogo de saberes, comunidades indígenas y universitarios” se construyó un tercer espacio de producción de interculturalidades para los estudiantes de la UICEH. Para la elaboración de esta investigación, las metodologías utilizadas fueron la etnografía digital y la doble reflexividad. Entre algunos de los resultados obtenidos, se encontró que los estudiantes vivieron procesos de reflexividad en la producción de este material, lo que les permitió conformar una interculturalidad desde el saber de sus territorios, pero vinculado al saber universitario, estableciendo así “diálogos vivos”. y posicionarse ética y políticamente. Además, esta experiencia de producción de materiales como “tercer espacio productor de reflexividades e interculturalidades” podría ser una forma de generar “terceros espacios cómodos” para que los estudiantes de la UICEH aprendan a gestionar aprendizajes y reflexividades diversas, especialmente aquellas vinculadas a la recuperación de saberes comunitarios e indígenas.

The recent introduction of the "precision medicine" concept in oncology pushed cancer research to focus on dynamic measurable biomarkers able to predict responses to novel anticancer therapies in order to improve clinical outcomes. Recently, the involvement of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in cancer pathophysiology has been described, and given their release from all cell types under specific stimuli, EVs have also been proposed as potential biomarkers in cancer. Among the techniques used to study EVs, flow cytometry has a high clinical potential. Here, we have applied a recently developed and simplified flow cytometry method for circulating EV enumeration, subtyping, and isolation from a large cohort of metastatic and locally advanced nonhaematological cancer patients (N = 106); samples from gender- and age-matched healthy volunteers were also analysed. A large spectrum of cancer-related markers was used to analyse differences in terms of peripheral blood circulating EV phenotypes between patients and healthy volunteers, as well as their correlation to clinical outcomes. Finally, EVs from patients and controls were isolated by fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and their protein cargoes were analysed by proteomics. Results demonstrated that EV counts were significantly higher in cancer patients than in healthy volunteers, as previously reported. More interestingly, results also demonstrated that cancer patients presented higher concentrations of circulating CD31+ endothelial-derived and tumour cancer stem cell-derived CD133 + CD326- EVs, when compared to healthy volunteers. Furthermore, higher levels of CD133 + CD326− EVs showed a significant correlation with a poor overall survival. Additionally, proteomics analysis of EV cargoes demonstrated disparities in terms of protein content and function between circulating EVs in cancer patients and healthy controls. Overall, our data strongly suggest that blood circulating cancer stem cell-derived EVs may have a role as a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker in cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Damage concerns, such as substrate/film material alterations, damage, and delamination of thin films, have become a central problem in sub-100 nm particle removal applications. In the laser induced plasma (LIP) removal technique both LIP shockwave and radiation heating are potential sources of thermomechanical damage. The specific objective of current study is to conduct a computational investigation of the LIP shockwave effect on the thermoelastic response of a thin chromium (Cr) film deposited on a quartz substrate and to identify the conditions leading to the onset of plastic film deformations. The experimentally characterized shockwave pressure and temperature (approximated from gas dynamic relations) were prescribed as boundary conditions in the computational analysis. From the shockwave arrival times for different travel distances, the shockwave radius as well as the velocity were obtained as a function of the shockwave propagation time. Radial (and circumferential) stresses, caused by thermal expansion of the Cr film, were most dominant and, hence, of damage concern. It is determined that the resultant temperature rise utilizing a 1064 nm Nd:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) laser (450 mJ) due to the film-shockwave interactions was not sufficiently high to initiate film and/or substrate damage. No material alteration/damage of the Cr film is predicted due to the temperature and pressure of LIP shockwaves at the firing distance of 2 mm, with a high strain rate gain factor of two (minimum), though damage was observed experimentally for 1064 nm Nd:YAG laser at the pulse energy of 370 mJ. Reported results indicate that the leading cause of observed thin film damage during nanoparticle removal is almost certainly radiation heating from the LIP core. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Este artigo tem como referência parte de um capítulo da dissertação de mestrado em Educação. O objetivo é demonstrar como o pensamento gramsciano pode auxiliar na compreensão dos processos e consequências da produção de Fake News no mundo contemporâneo, e compreender à seguinte exigência de Gramsci: necessitamos de uma escola ligada à vida (GRAMSCI, 1991). Para então, analisar um possível caminho para a educação do século XXI, no sentido da formação dos sujeitos para uma realidade permeada de falsos discursos, os quais buscam criar uma falsa consciência da realidade. O percurso metodológico da pesquisa é guiado pela Hermenêutica que nos ajuda a compreender as narrativas em seus dizeres e silêncios que produzem uma concepção de mundo, a partir de uma relação que ultrapassa o tempo aproximando uma discussão da atualidade com o pensamento de Antonio Gramsci. Assim, o aporte teórico se concentra em três grandes intelectuais que dialogam: Gramsci (1991 e 2000), Freire (1979; 1986 e 2019) e Martín-Barbero (2014). Ao concluir o artigo, acreditamos ter compreendido a urgência de refletir e discutir em profundidade o que permeia a produção de Fake News e os impactos diretos na formação dos sujeitos, o qual se depara constantemente com falsos discursos da realidade. Além da necessidade de introduzirmos práticas educomunicativas, tanto na educação formal quanto informal.
