Introduction: Clavicle fractures in adults are increasingly being treated by surgical fixation following reports of symptomatic non-union, malunion and poor functional outcome with conservative treatment. This has led to a similar trend in the management of clavicle fractures in adolescents. This study aims to evaluate the outcome and complications of non-operatively treated clavicle fractures in adolescents. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective, single institution study on adolescents aged 13-17 years who sustained a closed, isolated clavicle fracture, between 19972015. Clinical records were reviewed for demographic information, injury mode, time to radiographic fracture union, time to re-attainment of full shoulder range of motion (ROM), and time to return to full activities and sports. Complications and fracture-related issues were recorded. Radiographs were analysed for fracture location, displacement and shortening. Results: A total of 115 patients (98 males, 17 females; mean age:13.9 ± 0.89 years) were included for study. 101 (88%) sustained a middle-third fracture while the remainder sustained a lateral-third fracture. A total of 96 (95%) of the middle-third fractures were displaced, and 12 (86%) of the lateral-third fractures were displaced. All displaced fractures in this study had shortening. Sports-related injuries and falls accounted for 68 (59%) and 34 (30%) of the cases respectively. Overall, the mean time to radiographic fracture union was 7.8 ± 4.35 weeks; there were no cases of nonunion. Full shoulder ROM was re-attained in 6.6 ± 3.61 weeks, and full activities and sports was resumed in 11.4 ± 4.69 weeks. There were 5 cases of re-fracture and a single case of intermittent fracture site pain. Conclusion: Clavicle fractures in adolescents can and should be treated non-operatively in the first instance with the expectation of good outcomes in terms of time for fracture union, reattainment of shoulder full range of motion, and return to activities. Surgical stabilisation should be reserved for cases for which there is an absolute indication.

- Abstract
The MAJIS (Moons and Jupiter Imaging Spectrometer) instrument is an imaging spectrometer on-board the JUICE (JUpiter ICy moons Explorer) spacecraft. MAJIS covers the spectral range from 0.5 to 5.54 μm with two channels [visible–near infrared (VISNIR) and IR]. A comprehensive campaign of on-ground MAJIS calibration was conducted in August and September 2021 in the IAS (Institut d'Astrophysique Spatiale, CNRS/Université Paris-Saclay) facilities. In this article, we present the results relevant for the radiometric calibration of MAJIS. Due to the specific characteristics of the MAJIS detectors (H1RG from Teledyne), an extensive detector characterization campaign was implemented for both the VISNIR and IR detectors before integration so as to validate readout procedures providing precision and accuracy. The characterization also provided critical information on linearity and operability as a function of the integration time and operating temperature. The radiometric calibration of the integrated MAJIS instrument focused on the determination of the instrument transfer function in terms of DN output per unit of radiance for each MAJIS data element as a function of its position in the field of view of MAJIS and its central wavelength. The radiometric calibration of the VISNIR channel required a specific procedure due to stray light at short wavelengths. Observations of an internal calibration source during calibration and after launch (April 14, 2023) showed that there were minor changes in both the VISNIR and IR channels. The instrument transfer functions to be used in flight have been updated on this basis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article examines the expression and activity of plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) in patients with recurrent erythema multiforme (REM), a condition characterized by repeated outbreaks of erythema multiforme (EM). The study found that REM patients had increased expression of CD123, a marker for pDCs, in the epidermis and dermis. However, they also had reduced expression of Toll-like receptor 9 (TLR9), which suggests impaired activation of pDCs. The authors hypothesize that this impaired activation may contribute to the persistence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) and REM episodes. Further research on the role of reduced TLR9 expression in REM patients could lead to new targeted therapies. [Extracted from the article]

FOSSIL corals ,OCEAN temperature ,OXYGEN isotopes ,STABLE isotopes ,CORALS - Abstract
Coral‐based stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O) have been used as a proxy for sea surface temperature (SST) since the 1970s, and δ18O–SST calibration studies have been fundamental to assure robust and faithful SST reconstructions. Paleoclimatic studies based on corals from the tropical western South Atlantic (TWSA) are scarce, and the available coral species need to be calibrated to improve climate and environmental reconstructions. Siderastrea stellata, a slow‐growing coral, is a potential species to be explored as a coral archive in the TWSA. We provide the first multi‐site δ18O–SST calibration for the coral S. stellata from three locations at the TWSA: Todos os Santos Bay, Tamandaré and the Rocas Atoll. Pseudo‐coral δ18O calculations derived from gridded SSS and SST show that the contributions of SSS and SST to coral δ18O are expected to be different at each site. Weighted least squares linear regressions performed between the δ18O and SST generated the following calibrations equations: δ18O = −0.18 (±0.02) × SST (°C) + 1.90 (±0.47) for Todos os Santos Bay; δ18O = −0.18 (±0.02) × SST (°C) + 1.54 (±0.67) for Tamandaré; and δ18O = −0.16 (±0.03) × SST (°C) + 1.24 (±0.71) for the Rocas Atoll. The δ18O‐SST sensitivity of S. stellata from the TWSA is similar to that of other slow‐growing species of the genus and consistent with the expected δ18O‐SST sensitivity of other species reported in the literature. These calibrations will allow future SST reconstructions based on δ18O records from sub‐fossil and fossil S. stellata, an abundant species in the TWSA. Plain Language Summary: Corals continuously biomineralize calcium carbonate, storing environmental information within their exoskeletons in geochemical and isotopic records that span hundreds of years and making them suitable for high‐resolution climate reconstructions. The stable oxygen isotopes (δ18O) found in corals are an important proxy for revealing past sea surface temperatures (SST) and sea surface salinities (SSS). However, to ensure that this proxy is applicable to reconstruct past SST, further δ18O–SST calibration studies are needed on various regions and species. In this study, we carried out three field work experiments to provide the first multi‐site δ18O–SST calibration of the slow‐growing coral Siderastrea stellata from the western South Atlantic. Despite the slow growth nature of S. stellata corals that poses a challenge to high temporal resolution sampling, we successfully provided new calibration equations for SST reconstruction from three different locations in the western South Atlantic. Our calibration equations can now be applied to reconstruct SST based on coral δ18O records from sub‐fossil and fossil coral cores. Key Points: First multi‐site δ18O‐SST calibrations for the slow‐growing coral Siderastrea stellata from the western South Atlanticδ18O–SST sensitivity for S. stellata varied from −0.15 to −0.19‰ per °C across the different reef environmentsThis study paves the way for using S. stellata δ18O from fossil and subfossil corals for paleoclimate reconstructions from the western South Atlantic [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Mitral annular disjunction (MAD) has been defined as a structural abnormality with separation between the posterior leaflet of the mitral valve and the left atrial wall. It is commonly associated with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD), mitral valve prolapse (MVP), ventricular arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac death in humans, but has not been described in veterinary medicine despite the high prevalence of MMVD in the canine population. The echocardiographic findings in a Chihuahua with MAD, MMVD, and MVP are described. Diagnostic methods and criteria are reviewed and adapted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Background: Field hockey is an Olympic sport played internationally and in which South Africa is a participating nation. It also has its own world cup. Few injury studies have been published on South African field hockey. Research efforts should increase within the sport to ensure safe participation and mitigate the inherent injury risks. Objectives: The objective of the study was to attend the male and female inter-provincial field hockey tournaments in South Africa and determine the incidence of injury and burden of acquired sport injuries (time-loss and medical attention). Methods: A quantitative, descriptive, longitudinal study, including 133 females and 139 males, was conducted. Participants completed baseline questionnaires prior to the tournament and post-match questionnaires detailing injuries during the tournament. Results: The recorded injuries were 77.9 (females) and 99.5 (males) per 1 000 player match hours. Medical attention was 51.9 (females) and 70.3 (males) injuries per 1 000 player match hours. The result for time-loss injuries was 4.3 (females) and 7.5 (males) injuries per 1 000 player match hours. Discussion: The study found high incidence rates of all injuries and medical attention injuries; however, the incidence of time-loss injuries was low in comparison to existing literature. Comparing current results to existing literature is challenging due to the heterogeneity of methodologies and injury definitions in field hockey research. Conclusion: This was the largest observational study in field hockey conducted in South Africa. The international sporting body should establish a consensus for future research and the South African Hockey Association explore long-term surveillance in South Africa to mimic similar national codes.

Ana Gameiro,1 Neide Pereira,2 José Carlos Cardoso,1 Margarida Gonçalo1 1Dermatology Department, Coimbra University Hospital, Coimbra, Portugal; 2Dermatology Department, Centro Hospitalar Cova da Beira, Covilhã, Portugal Abstract: Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare disease, but commonly related to important morbidity. PG was first assumed to be infectious, but is now considered an inflammatory neutrophilic disease, often associated with autoimmunity, and with chronic inflammatory and neoplastic diseases. Currently, many aspects of the underlying pathophysiology are not well understood, and etiology still remains unknown. PG presents as painful, single or multiple lesions, with several clinical variants, in different locations, with a non specific histology, which makes the diagnosis challenging and often delayed. In the classic ulcerative variant, characterized by ulcers with inflammatory undermined borders, a broad differential diagnosis of malignancy, infection, and vasculitis needs to be considered, making PG a diagnosis of exclusion. Moreover, there are no definitively accepted diagnostic criteria. Treatment is also challenging since, due to its rarity, clinical trials are difficult to perform, and consequently, there is no “gold standard” therapy. Patients frequently require aggressive immunosuppression, often in multidrug regimens that are not standardized. We reviewed the clinical challenges of PG in order to find helpful clues to improve diagnostic accuracy and the treatment options, namely topical care, systemic drugs, and the new emerging therapies that may reduce morbidity. The development of tunable UV-curable polymeric composites for functional applications, taking into consideration environmental issues and additive manufacturing technologies, is a research topic with relevant challenges yet to be solved. Herein, acrylic composites filled with 0–3 wt.%. polyaniline/ multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PANI/MWCNT) are prepared by Digital Light Processing (DLP) in order to tailor morphology, thermal, mechanical, and electromechanical properties. Viscosity, real-time infrared spectroscopy, and cure depth tests allow optimizing resin composition for suitable DLP printing. 2 wt.% is the maximum filler content reproducibly embedded in the polymer matrix. The advantages of PANI/MWCNT (50/50 wt.%) compared with single-component composites include safety issues, enhanced printability, increased electrical conductivity and thermal stability, and lower electrical percolation threshold (0.83 wt.%). Above this threshold the composites display excellent piezoresistive response, no hysteresis, and stability for over 400 compression cycles. The pressure sensibility (PS) of 2 wt.% composites decreases with applied pressure from PS ≈ 15 to 0.8 Mpa−1 for maximum pressures of 0.02 and 0.57 MPa, respectively. A proof-of-concept of the functionality of the novel materials is developed in the form of a tactile sensor, demonstrating their potential for pressure sensing applications as cost-effective, sustainable, and flexible materials for printed electronics., Goretti Arias-Ferreiro would like to thank the financial funding received from the Xunta de Galicia and the European Union (ED481A-2019/001). In recent years, printed electronics reached enormous popularity as a result of their huge potential to offer unique features that are not attainable through traditional fabrication, namely low‐cost production, multifunctionality, stretchability, sustainability, and flexibility. Being expected a galloping increase in the use of printed technologies in the near future, due to the digitalization efforts associated with the Internet of Things and the 4.0 revolution, it is timely and desirable to discuss the joint features, the interrelations, the complementarities, the interdependency, and the most demanding challenges linked to the relation between printed technologies and electronic materials. In this context, this study offers a broad review of the numerous printing technologies used in the processing of electronics, commonly used substrates, the most effective printed electronic materials, and the key post‐printing treatments such as sintering. Disruptive challenges in various printing techniques, (un)expected future research directions of printed electronics, and imminent application trends are also highlighted, following a critical and subjective perspective.
