Reliable estimates, specific for age, sex, and comorbidities, are needed to monitor the epidemic, to compare the outcome in different settings, and to correctly design trials for COVID-19 interventions. The aim of this study was to provide population-based survival curves of hospitalized COVID-19 patients.Materials and Methods: A cohort study was conducted in three areas of Northern Italy, heavily affected by SARS-CoV-2 infection (Lombardy and Veneto Regions, and Reggio Emilia province), using a loco-regional COVID-19 surveillance system, linked to hospital discharge databases. We included all patients testing positive for SARS-CoV-2 RNA by RT-PCR on nasopharyngeal/throat swab samples who were hospitalized from 21 February to 21 April 2020. Kaplan–Meier survival estimates were calculated at 14 and 30 days for death in any setting, stratifying by age, sex, and the Charlson Index. Results: Overall, 42,926 hospitalized COVID-19 patients were identified. Patients’ median age was 69 years (IQR: 57– 79), 62.6% were males, and 6.0% had a Charlson Index ≥ 3. Survival curves showed that 22.0% (95% CI 21.6– 22.4) of patients died within 14 days and 27.6% (95% CI 27.2– 28.1) within 30 days from hospitalization. Survival was higher in younger patients and in females. The negative impact of comorbidities on survival was more pronounced in younger age groups. Conclusion: The high fatality rate observed in the study (28% at 30 days) suggests that studies should focus on death as primary endpoint during a follow-up of at least one month. Keywords: COVID-19, survival, cohort study, hospitalized patients, Italy

Byline: M. Pellizzari, A. Molinari, D. Cescato, A. Ghidini, S. Cantini The Thermal Fatigue (TF) resistance rates of four martensitic chromium steel grades (DIN 1.2343, 1.2344, 1.2365 and 1.2367) are evaluated. Three parameters were used to describe the resistance to thermal cracking: the mean crack length lm, the maximum crack length lmax and the crack density ρ. A higher damage is shown by DIN 1.2343 and 1.2344 compared to DIN 1.2365 and 1.2367, the latter being characterised by higher yield strength at elevated temperature, higher resistance to thermal softening and lower toughness. An increasing number of cycles is required to nucleate the cracks in different materials, i.e., 60, 120, 180 and 240 for 1.2343, 1.2344, 1.2367 and 1.2365, respectively. During the initial incubation stage, the crack density displays an increase with increasing thermal softening and decreasing hot strength. During the rest of the test, a general increase in maximum crack length can be appreciated with increasing thermal softening and decreasing hot strength.

Byline: M. Pellizzari, A. Molinari, L. Girardini, L. Maldarelli The influence of Deep Cryogenic Treatment (DCT) on the properties of AISI-M2 is evaluated. Hardness,(apparent) fracture toughness and wear resistance were measured after submitting this steel to conventional vacuum heat treatment, including quenching and triple tempering and three variants including DCT before and after tempering. In any case, only minor differences in hardness and a corresponding increase in fracture toughness were introduced by DCT, even after tempering the steel at temperature lower than conventional. Tempering could be optimised if DCT was carried out after quenching, owing to a shift of the secondary peak hardness towards lower temperature. A reduction of the wear rate of 32% was displayed by the specimen cryogenically treated before conventional triple tempering. A further reduction to 49% was observed by lowering the tempering temperature.

Byline: G. Straffelini, M. Pellizzari, L. Maines, A. Molinari An Al-based metal matrix composite containing 20 vol.% of SiC particles was submitted to dry sliding tests to verify its suitability for the production of brake discs for the automobile industry. Three types of friction materials were investigated, and tests against cast iron were also carried out for comparison. The tests were carried out at increasing applied loads, and the evolution of friction coefficient, surface temperature and wear was monitored. The obtained results are only partially promising. Friction is low and decreases as the applied load and surface temperature are increased. The high thermal conductivity of the material does not play the expected role. Wear, finally, was negligible, but surface damage was present and intense, and this could produce severe wear in the case of prolonged sliding.

Byline: M. Faccoli, G.M. La Vecchia, R. Roberti, A. Molinari, M. Pellizzari The improvement in wear and corrosion resistance induced by vapour-deposited coatings whether chemical (CVD) or physical (PVD) are well-known. In fact, when the applied coating is thick enough, it tends to be essentially pore free and dense providing an excellent barrier protection both in terms of corrosion and wear resistance. A typical application area for vapour-deposited coatings on ferrous alloys is the surface modification given by TiN or TiC PVD coatings to improve the service life of high speed steels used for manufacturing cutting tools. As a surface modification technique, PVD is attractive because the different procedures proposed in the literature and industrially developed allow coatings to be obtained of controlled composition and strength thus making possible the extended use of coated tools for wider application fields such as the die-casting process in which die casting dies must withstand thermal shock, thermal fatigue and resistance to molten metals. In the present paper, both nucleation and propagation of fatigue cracks induced by thermal fatigue cycling on AISI H11 hot work tool steel PVD coated with chromium nitride and titanium/aluminium nitride have been investigated. A further coating given by a dense film of magnetite (Fe3O4), employed as corrosion barrier and obtained by surface oxidation of the same AISI H11 hot work tool steel, has also been studied. The obtained thermal fatigue results have been compared with previous data from tests on the same uncoated steel and have been related to the morphology, chemical composition and physical proprieties of the tested coatings.

- Abstract

- Abstract

Background Trials have shown a beneficial effect of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in patients with a previous myocardial infarction or heart failure. We evaluated the potential benefit of such therapy in patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors or atherosclerotic vascular disease who had not had a myocardial infarction. Methods In this double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, we enrolled a cohort of patients who were followed by a network of 860 general practitioners in Italy. Eligible patients were men and women with multiple cardiovascular risk factors or atherosclerotic vascular disease but not myocardial infarction. Patients were randomly assigned to n-3 fatty acids (1 g daily) or placebo (olive oil). The initially specified primary end point was the cumulative rate of death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, and nonfatal stroke. At 1 year, after the event rate was found to be lower than anticipated, the primary end point was revised as time to death from cardiovascular causes or admission to the hospital for cardiovascular causes. Results Of the 12,513 patients enrolled, 6244 were randomly assigned to n-3 fatty acids and 6269 to placebo. With a median of 5 years of follow-up, the primary end point occurred in 1478 of 12,505 patients included in the analysis (11.8%), of whom 733 of 6239 (11.7%) had received n-3 fatty acids and 745 of 6266 (11.9%) had received placebo (adjusted hazard ratio with n-3 fatty acids, 0.97; 95% confidence interval, 0.88 to 1.08; P=0.58). The same null results were observed for all the secondary end points. Conclusions In a large general-practice cohort of patients with multiple cardiovascular risk factors, daily treatment with n-3 fatty acids did not reduce cardiovascular mortality and morbidity. - Abstract
The influence of Deep Cryogenic Treatment (DCT) on the properties of four wrought and PM high speed steels was investigated. Hardness and (apparent) fracture toughness Ka were measured to highlight the possible influence of DCT carried out before and after tempering. Dry sliding wear tests were carried using a block on disc configuration. The properties of the two wrought steels, HS6-5-2 (AISI M2) and HS6-5-2-5 (AISI M35), highlight a well defined influence of DCT. HS6-5-2 shows a remarkable improvement in abrasive wear resistance without any hardness increase. The most promising result is obtained by carrying out DCT before tempering. The opposite occurs by HS6-5-2-5, containing about 4.8%Co, whose wear resistance decreases in any treatment condition including DCT. PM steels show a less significant change in properties, since these are mainly controlled by the high amount of evenly distributed primary carbides which are not influenced by DCT. A slight increase in wear resistance was observed just for HS6-5-3. A general worsening was observed for HS6-5-3-8, namely HS6-5-3 plus 8%Co. In the light of results here presented cobalt seems to play a negative effect with respect to the low temperature conditioning of martensite.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Thermal fatigue represents one of the most significant causes for roughing mill roll deterioration and possible failure. The materials ability to withstand thermal cycling is strictly correlated to its microstructural properties, which are the result of the solidification process and following heat treatment. Rolls for hot strip rolling mills are usually produced by centrifugal casting, without subsequent forging. A crucial role is played by the eutectic carbide network developing on solidification, which represents a preferential pattern for crack propagation. For this reason conventional highly alloyed HSS are not a popular substitute for traditional Chromium steel rolls in rougher stands. The so - called “semi-HSS”, containing less C (0.7-0.9 %C) and alloying elements are usually preferred by users requiring improved roll material. Specially developed “HSS for roughers” are being tested in various mills, but they are out of the scope of this paper. The present work is part of a continuing effort by INNSE Cilindri (RIVA Group) and Trento University to improve the “semi HSS” grades. In particular the thermal fatigue resistance of a new class of low-C semi HSS is evaluated. For purpose of comparison, both a conventional semi-HSS and a HSS grade were also considered. The test is based on induction heating (Tmax=670°C) and water cooling of cylindrical discs. Experimental results confirm the lower susceptibility towards heat checking of the new grades, containing reduced amount of eutectic carbides, the best behaviour being exhibited by a steel with a mixed martensite-bainite matrix microstructure.

COPPER powder , *SINTERING , *PLASMA gases , *MATERIAL plasticity , *MECHANICAL alloying , *BALL mills - Abstract
Mechanical milling is a suitable technique to enhance various properties of copper by the severe plastic deformation involved during the process. Contamination from milling media is one of the major problems of mechanical alloying. In this study, the behaviour of copper powder during mechanical milling was investigated in order to minimize iron and chromium contaminations. Hence, three different parameters have been studied to highlight the high influence of ball milling parameters on the final products. The parameters included the type of process control agent (none, toluene or stearic acid), the ball-to-powder weight ratio (33:1 or 10:1) and finally, a change in the milling cycle (interrupted or continuous) in an interactive procedure according to the experimental results. As a result, the best morphology and contamination level combination was observed in powder milled with stearic acid; it was 10:1 for the ball to powder ratio when using a continuous milling cycle. Once the best milling conditions were determined, the resulting samples were exposed to spark plasma sintering (SPS). The sintering parameters were selected based on a previous thermal gravimetrical measurement of the milled powders to avoid residual porosity. The final density of all of the samples is very good, 99%, confirming an effective densification process and sintering activated by severely strain-hardened and nanostructured particles. Abstract: Hot work tool steels are characterized by good toughness and high hot hardness but are less wear resistant than other tooling materials, such as high speed steel. Metal matrix composites show improved tribological behavior, but not much work has been done in the field of hot work tool steels. In this paper TiB2-reinforced hot work tool steel matrix composites were produced by spark plasma sintering (SPS). Mechanical alloying (MA) was proposed as a suited process to improve the composite microstructure. Density measurements and microstructure confirmed that MA promotes sintering and produces a fine and homogeneous dispersion of reinforcing particles. X-ray diffraction patterns of the sintered composites highlighted the formation of equilibrium Fe2B and TiC, as predicted by thermodynamic calculations using Thermo-Calc® software. Scanning electron microscopy as well as scanning Kelvin probe force microscopy highlighted the reaction of the steel matrix with TiB2 particles, showing the formation of a reaction layer at the TiB2-steel interface. Phase investigations pointed out that TiB2 is not chemically stable in steel matrix because of the presence of carbon even during short time SPS. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Thermal fatigue (TF) is a common problem in many tool steel components. It is caused by thermal cycling in presence of internal constraints. The resulting thermomechanical stresses induce thermal cracking (heat checking). A laboratory test was developed to reproduce TF damage on a laboratory scale, under oxidizing conditions. Two different test configurations were used to induce unidirectional and bidirectional cracking. Nitriding impairs TF resistance of plain steel due to the easier propagation of cracks through the diffusion layer. The efficacy of PVD coatings is dependent on their oxidation resistance and microstructure. The higher oxidation resistance of AlCrN/AlTiN than CrN results in delayed crack initiation. TF resistance is increased if the coating is free of defects and the interface adhesion is good. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
