We provide global parameterizations of $\pi\pi$ scattering $S0$ and $P$ partial waves up to roughly 2 GeV for phenomenological use. These parameterizations describe the output and uncertainties of previous partial-wave dispersive analyses of $\pi\pi$, both in the real axis up to 1.12 GeV and in the complex plane within their applicability region, while also fulfilling forward dispersion relations up to 1.43 GeV. Above that energy we just describe the available experimental data. Moreover, the analytic continuations of these global parameterizations also describe accurately the dispersive determinations of the $\sigma/f_0(500)$, $f_0(980)$ and $\rho(770)$ pole parameters., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

This volume is a short summary of talks given at the PKI2018 Workshop organized to discuss current status and future prospects of pi-K interactions. The precise data on pi-K interaction will have a strong impact on strange meson spectroscopy and form factors that are important ingredients in the Dalitz plot analysis of a decays of heavy mesons as well as precision measurement of Vus matrix element and therefore on a test of unitarity in the first raw of the CKM matrix. The workshop has combined the efforts of experimentalists, Lattice QCD, and phenomenology communities. Experimental data relevant to the topic of the workshop were presented from the broad range of different collaborations like CLAS, GlueX, COMPASS, BaBar, BELLE, BESIII, VEPP-2000, and LHCb. One of the main goals of this workshop was to outline a need for a new high intensity and high precision secondary KL beam facility at JLab produced with the 12 GeV electron beam of CEBAF accelerator. We present a determination of the mass, width and coupling of the strange resonances appearing in pion-kaon scattering below 1.8 GeV, namely the much debated $K^*_0(800)$ or $\kappa$, the scalar $K^*_0(1430)$, the $K^*(892)$ and $K^*(1410)$ vectors, the spin-two $K^*_2(1430)$ as well as the spin-three $K^*_3(1780)$. The existence and properties of the sigma meson have been controversial for almost six decades, despite playing a central role in the spontaneous chiral symmetry of QCD or in the nucleon-nucleon attraction. This controversy has also been fed by the strong indications that it is not an ordinary quark-antiquark meson. Here we review both the recent and old experimental data and the model independent dispersive formalisms which have provided precise determinations of its mass and width, finally settling the controversy and leading to its new name: $f_0(500)$. We then provide a rather conservative average of the most recent and advanced dispersive determinations of its pole position $\sqrt{s_\sigma}=449^{+22}_{-16}-i(275\pm12)$. In addition, after comprehensive introductions, we will review within the modern perspective of effective theories and dispersion theory, its relation to chiral symmetry, unitarization techniques, its quark mass dependence, popular models, as well as the recent strong evidence, obtained from the QCD $1/N_c$ expansion or Regge theory, for its non ordinary nature in terms of quarks and gluons., Comment: 170 pages, 39 figures. We apply a recently developed dispersive formalism to calculate the Regge trajectories of the $f_2(1270)$ and $f_2'(1525)$ mesons. Trajectories are calculated, not fitted to a family of resonances. Assuming that these spin-2 resonances can be treated in the elastic approximation the only input are the pole position and residue of the resonances. In both cases, the predicted Regge trajectories are almost real and linear, with slopes in agreement with the universal value of order 1 GeV$^{-2}$., 8 pages, 4 figures

We review the use of new and precise dispersive equations, which also implement crossing symmetry, in order to shed further light on the long-standing puzzle in the parameters of the f0(500), as well as the f0(980). This puzzle is finally being settled thanks to several analyses carried out during the last years. In this talk we show how our very recent dispersive data analysis allowed for a precise and model independent determination of the amplitudes for the S,P,D and F waves. In particular, we show how the analytic continuation of once subtracted dispersion relations for the S0 wave to the complex energy plane leads to very precise results for the f0(500) pole: sqrt(s)_pole = 457^(+14)_(-13) - i 279^(+11)_(-7) MeV and for the f0(980) pole: sqrt(s)_pole = 996+/-7 - i 25^(+10)_(-6) MeV. We also comment on how these results have been already used for other practical applications, including a refit of a previous model to the pipi S-wave amplitudes below 1000 MeV, which improves its consistency with the poles found with the dispersive approach., 4 pages, 3 figures, prepeared for proceedings of the QCD2012 conference in Montpellier, July 2012

We report our progress on the data analysis of $\pi\pi$ scattering data in terms of Forward Dispersion Relations (FDR), as well as Roy equations (RE) and their once-subtracted counterpart, GKPY equations. The first part of the analysis consists of independent fits to the different $\pi\pi$ channels. The GKPY equations provide a more stringent consistency check for the parametrizations of the S0-wave data in the region from 400 to 1100 MeV, In the second part we present our preliminary analysis where the fits are constrained to satisfy all dispersion relations within errors, including the new GKPY Eqs., thus providing a very precise and model independent description of data using just analyticity, causality and crossing., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, to appear in the proceedings of the International Workshop On Effective Field Theories: From The Pion To The Upsilon (EFT 09), 2-6 Feb 2009, Valencia, Spain

We briefly review how light meson resonances are described within one and two-loop Unitarized Chiral Perturbation Theory amplitudes and how, close to Nc=3, light vectors follow the Nc behavior of $q\bar q$ mesons whereas light scalars do not. This supports the hypothesis that the lightest scalar is not predominantly a $q\bar q$ meson, although a subdominant $q\bar q$ component is suggested around 1 GeV at somewhat larger Nc. In contrast, when Nc is very far from 3, like in the Nc --> infinity limit, we explain again in detail why unitarization is not, a priori, reliable nor robust and why this limit should not be used to drag any conclusions about the dominant nature of physical light scalar mesons., Comment: Invited talk at the Exicted QCD Meeting. 8-14 February 2009. Once and twice subtracted crossing symmetric dispersion relations applied to $\pi\pi \to \pi\pi$ scattering data are analyzed and compared. Both sets of dispersion relations can be used to test the $\pi\pi$ amplitudes in low partial waves up to about 1 GeV. We show how once subtracted dispersion relations can provide stronger constraints for $\pi\pi$ amplitudes than twice subtracted ones in the 400 to 1100 MeV range, given the same experimental input., Comment: 6 pages, to appear in proceedings of ExcitedQCD 09 workshop, 8-14 February 2009, Zakopane (Poland)

In view of the recent experimental developments on the experimental side in the $\eta \to \pi^0 \gamma \gamma$ decay, and the fact that the Particle Data Group in the on line edition of 2007 reports sizable changes of the radiative decay widths of vector mesons used as input in the theoretical calculations of \cite{eta}, a reevaluation of the decay width of the $\eta$ in this channel has been done, reducing its uncertainty by almost a factor of two. The new input of the PDG is used and invariant mass distributions and total widths are compared with the most recent results from AGS, MAMI and preliminary ones of KLOE. The agreement of the theory with the AGS and MAMI data is very good, both for the total rates as well as for the invariant mass distributions of the two photons.

We use the one-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory pion-pion scattering amplitude and dispersion theory in the form of the inverse amplitude method, to study the quark mass dependence of the two lightest resonances of the strong interactions, the f_0(600) (sigma) and the rho-meson. As main results we find that the rho-pion-pion coupling constant is almost quark mass independent and that the rho mass shows a smooth quark mass dependence while that of the sigma shows a strong non-analyticity. The experimental results obtained in the last few years on kaon decays (K$\to2\pi$ and, above all, Ke4 decays) allow a reliable, model independent determination of low energy $\pi\pi$ scattering in the S0 wave. Using them and, eventually, other sets of data, it is possible to give a precise parametrization of the S0 wave as well as to find the scattering length and effective range parameter. One can also perform an extrapolation to the pole of the "$\sigma$ resonance" [$f_0(600)$]. We obtain the results $$a_0^{(0)}=0.233\pm0.013 M^{-1}_\pi,\quad b_0^{(0)}=0.285\pm0.012 M^{-3}_\pi$$ and, for the $\sigma$ pole, $$M_\sigma=484\pm17 \mev,\quad\gammav_\sigma/2= 255\pm10 {\rm MeV}.$$, Comment: Plain TeX;4 figures; improved data used; version to appear in Phys. We present a model independent study of the chiral condensate evolution in a hadronic gas, in terms of temperature and baryon chemical potential. The meson-meson interactions are described within Chiral Perturbation Theory and the pion-nucleon interaction by means of Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory, both at one loop. Together with the virial expansion, this provides a model independent systematic expansion at low temperatures and chemical potentials, which includes the physical quark masses. This can serve as a guideline for further studies on the lattice. We also obtain estimates of the critical line of temperature and chemical potential where the chiral condensate melts, which systematically lie somewhat higher than recent lattice calculations but are consistent with several hadronic models., 3 Pages. By using unitarized two-loop Chiral Perturbation Theory partial waves to describe pion-pion scattering we find that the dominant component of the lightest scalar meson does not follow the q-qbar dependence on the number of colors that, in contrast, is obeyed by the lightest vectors. The method suggests that a subdominant q-qbar component of the f_0(600) possibly originates around 1 GeV., 4 pages, 1 Figure. To appear in Phys. Rev. Lett

We obtain reliable $\pi\pi$ scattering amplitudes consistent with experimental data, both at low and high energies, and fulfilling appropriate analyticity properties. We do this by first fitting experimental low energy ($s^{1/2}\leq1.42 {\rm GeV}$) phase shifts and inelasticities with expressions that incorporate analyticity and unitarity. In particular, for the S wave with isospin~0, we discuss in detail several sets of experimental data. This provides low energy partial wave amplitudes that summarize the known experimental information. Then, we impose Regge behaviour as follows from factorization and experimental data for the imaginary parts of the scattering amplitudes at higher energy, and check fulfillment of dispersion relations up to 0.925 GeV. This allows us to improve our fits. The ensuing $\pi\pi$ scattering amplitudes are then shown to verify dispersion relations up to 1.42 GeV, as well as $s - t - u$ crossing sum rules and other consistency conditions. The improved parametrizations therefore provide a reliable representation of pion-pion amplitudes with which one can test chiral perturbation theory calculations, pionium decays, or use as input for CP-violating $K$ decays. In this respect, we find $[a_0^{(0)}-a_0^{(2)}]^2=(0.077\pm0.008) M^{-1}_\pi$ and $\delta_0^{(0)}(m^2_K)-\delta_0^{(2)}(m^2_K)=52.9\pm1.6^{\rm o}$., Comment: Version to be published in Phys. Rev. D. We review our recent work on thermal meson properties within the Chiral Perturbation Theory framework. We will focus on the pion electromagnetic form factor, stressing its importance for Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions. We obtain model-independent predictions (based only on chiral symmetry) such as the temperature dependence of the pion electromagnetic charge radius. We review our recent description of high energy forward hadronic cross sections and in particular of pion scattering data by means of Regge theory. We obtain a prediction for the total proton-proton cross section at LHC. In addition, and contrary to some suggestions in the literature we show that standard Regge behavior can accommodate both crossing symmetry and factorization. We extend our previous analysis of the unitarized pion-nucleon scattering amplitude including up to fourth order terms in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. We show how to obtain information about the states of an effective field theory in terms of the underlying fundamental theory. In particular we analyze the spectroscopic nature of meson resonances from the meson-meson scattering amplitudes of the QCD low energy effective theory, combined with the expansion in the large number of colors. The vectors follow a qqbar behavior, whereas the sigma, kappa and f_0(980) scalars disappear for large N_c, in support of a qqqbarqbar-like nature. We calculate the combination $2a_0^{(0)}-5a_0^{(2)}$ (the Olsson sum rule) and the scattering lengths and effective ranges $a_1$, $a_2^{(I)}$ and $b_1$, $b_2^{(I)}$ dispersively (with the Froissart--Gribov representation) using, at low energy, the phase shifts for $\pi\pi$ scattering obtained by Colangelo, Gasser and Leutwyler (CGL) from the Roy equations and chiral perturbation theory, plus experiment and Regge behaviour at high energy, or directly, using the CGL parameters for $a$s and $b$s. We find mismatch, both among the CGL phases themselves and with the results obtained from the pion form factor. This reaches the level of several (2 to 5) standard deviations, and is essentially independent of the details of the intermediate energy region ($0.82\leq E\leq 1.42$ GeV) and, in some cases, of the high energy behaviour assumed. We present our recent results for the rho and sigma mesons considered as resonances in pion-pion scattering in a thermal bath. We use chiral perturbation theory to fourth order in p for the low energy behaviour, then extend the analysis via the unitarization method of the Inverse Amplitude into the resonance region. The width of the rho broadens about twice the amount required by phase space considerations alone, its mass staying practically constant up to temperatures of order 150 MeV. We improve the calculations of the $\eta \to \pi^0 \gamma \gamma$ decay within the context of meson chiral lagrangians. We use a chiral unitary approach for the meson-meson interaction, thus generating the $a_0(980)$ resonance and fixing the longstanding sign ambiguity on its contribution. This also allows us to calculate the loops with one vector meson exchange, thus removing a former source of uncertainty. In addition we ensure the consistency of the approach with other processes. First, by using vector meson dominance couplings normalized to agree with radiative vector meson decays. And, second, by checking the consistency of the calculations with the related $\gamma \gamma \to \pi^0 \eta$ reaction. We find an $\eta \to \pi^0 \gamma \gamma$ decay width of $0.47\pm 0.10$ eV, in clear disagreement with published data but in remarkable agreement with the most recent measurement., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, published version

We report on recent results on the decay of the phi into pi^+ pi^- and phi radiative decays into pi^0 pi^0 gamma and pi^0 eta gamma, which require the consideration of the final state interaction of a pair of mesons in a region inaccessible to Chiral Perturbation Theory. Inspired by the relation between the hadronic decay of the tau lepton and the electron-positron annihilation into hadrons, we derive new tests of perturbative QCD. We design a set of commensurate scale relations to test the self-consistency of leading-twist QCD predictions for any observable which defines an effective charge. We present a brief pedagogical introduction to the Effective Electroweak Chiral Lagrangians, which provide a model independent description of the WW interactions in the strong regime. This is the summary of the working group on Goldstone Boson Production and Decay of the Chiral Dynamics Workshop in Mainz, September 1-5, 1997. For the production aspects we discuss $\pi^0$ and $\eta$ production in nucleon-nucleon collisions and the behaviour of hadrons in various sum rules. For the decays we present a discussion on various $K$, $\eta$ and $\pi$ decay channels. Chiral lagrangians provide a model independent description of the strongly interacting symmetry breaking sector. In this work it is first reviewed the LHC sensitivity to the chiral parameters (in the hardest case of non-resonant low-energy WW scattering). Later it is shown how to reproduce or predict the resonance spectrum by means of dispersion theory and the inverse amplitude method. We have explicitely calculated the tree level elastic scattering cross sections of two longitudinal gauge bosons, up to four derivatives in the chiral expansion both with and without using the Equivalence Theorem (ET). We apply the one-loop results of the $SU(3)_L\times SU(3)_R$ ChPT suplemented with the inverse amplitude method to fit the available experimental data on $\pi\pi$ and $\pi K$ scattering. With esentially only three parameters we describe accurately data corresponding to six different channels, namely $(I,J)=(0,0), (2,0), (1,1), (1/2,0), (3/2,0)$ and $(1/2,1)$.
