Abstract

Solar-intercalation batteries, which are able to both harvest and store solar energy within the electrodes, are a promising technology for the more efficient utilization of intermittent solar radiation. However, there is a lack of understanding on how the light-induced intercalation reaction occurs within the electrode host lattice. Here, an in operando synchrotron X-ray diffraction methodology is introduced, which allows for real-time visualization of the structural evolution process within a solar-intercalation battery host electrode lattice. Coupled with ex situ material characterization, direct correlations between the structural evolution of MoO3 and the photo-electrochemical responses of the solar-intercalation batteries are established for the first time. MoO3 is found to transform, via a two-phase reaction mechanism, initially into a sodium bronze phase, Na0.33MoO3, followed by the formation of solid solutions, Na xMoO3 (0.33 < x < 1.1), on further photointercalation. Time-resolved correlations with the measured voltages indicate that the two-phase evolution reaction follows zeroth-order kinetics. The insights achieved from this study can aid the development of more advanced photointercalation electrodes and solar batteries with greater performances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Widths of pull-aparts between strike-slip fault segments appear to obey power-law scaling relationships, at least up to the scale of hundreds of millimetres. Field data from the Liassic limestones of Somerset, UK, are presented and are discussed in relation to fluid flow through rock. The established scaling relationships are used to predict the contributions of different-sized pull-aparts to space created by strike-slip faults. Fluid-filled pull-aparts are likely to be significant in hydrocarbon reservoirs affected by strike-slip faulting because they are sub-vertical tube-like structures that may extend through reservoirs and top seals. There are, however, insufficient data to develop a model for permeability along pull-aparts. Models of fluid flow in rock typically assume a limited range of fracture apertures, so models can be improved by incorporating information on the scaling relationships of the fractures and the contributions of different-sized fractures to secondary porosity. Also, geomechanical models that assume planar strike-slip faults are likely to underestimate migration because they do not consider the reduction of compressive stresses at pull-aparts. Abstract

This paper examines how reflective learning can be promoted and developed explicitly within the disciplines of geography, earth and environmental sciences. A review of various theoretical perspectives on reflection is provided, as well as a brief summary of the ways of incorporating reflection in the curriculum. The substantive part of this paper is based on a UK Learning and Teaching Support Network (LTSN) Subject Centre for Geography, Earth and Environmental Science (GEES) funded research project on reflective learning which was completed in 2001. A questionnaire survey was sent to GEES departments/schools to obtain information about the incorporation of reflective learning in the curriculum. From the analysis of the questionnaire returns, the project team identified four themes regarding the relevance of reflective learning to GEES disciplines. Project findings demonstrate how the inclusion of reflective learning exercises and activities is at an embryonic stage in many UK GEES departments/schools. The paper concludes by highlighting certain challenges that geographers, earth and environmental scientists could address if they wish to seek to develop reflective learning and enhance the student learning experience.
