Autonomous driving requires accurate local scene understanding information. To this end, autonomous agents deploy object detection and online BEV lane graph extraction methods as a part of their perception stack. In this work, we propose an architecture and loss formulation to improve the accuracy of local lane graph estimates by using 3D object detection outputs. The proposed method learns to assign the objects to centerlines by considering the centerlines as cluster centers and the objects as data points to be assigned a probability distribution over the cluster centers. This training scheme ensures direct supervision on the relationship between lanes and objects, thus leading to better performance. The proposed method improves lane graph estimation substantially over state-of-the-art methods. The extensive ablations show that our method can achieve significant performance improvements by using the outputs of existing 3D object detection methods. Since our method uses the detection outputs rather than detection method intermediate representations, a single model of our method can use any detection method at test time., ICCV 2023

Autonomous driving requires a structured understanding of the surrounding road network to navigate. One of the most common and useful representation of such an understanding is done in the form of BEV lane graphs. In this work, we use the video stream from an onboard camera for online extraction of the surrounding's lane graph. Using video, instead of a single image, as input poses both benefits and challenges in terms of combining the information from different timesteps. We study the emerged challenges using three different approaches. The first approach is a post-processing step that is capable of merging single frame lane graph estimates into a unified lane graph. The second approach uses the spatialtemporal embeddings in the transformer to enable the network to discover the best temporal aggregation strategy. Finally, the third, and the proposed method, is an early temporal aggregation through explicit BEV projection and alignment of framewise features. A single model of this proposed simple, yet effective, method can process any number of images, including one, to produce accurate lane graphs. The experiments on the Nuscenes and Argoverse datasets show the validity of all the approaches while highlighting the superiority of the proposed method. The code will be made public.

Pose-conditioned convolutional generative models struggle with high-quality 3D-consistent image generation from single-view datasets, due to their lack of sufficient 3D priors. Recently, the integration of Neural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) and generative models, such as Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), has transformed 3D-aware generation from single-view images. NeRF-GANs exploit the strong inductive bias of neural 3D representations and volumetric rendering at the cost of higher computational complexity. This study aims at revisiting pose-conditioned 2D GANs for efficient 3D-aware generation at inference time by distilling 3D knowledge from pretrained NeRF-GANs. We propose a simple and effective method, based on re-using the well-disentangled latent space of a pre-trained NeRF-GAN in a pose-conditioned convolutional network to directly generate 3D-consistent images corresponding to the underlying 3D representations. Experiments on several datasets demonstrate that the proposed method obtains results comparable with volumetric rendering in terms of quality and 3D consistency while benefiting from the computational advantage of convolutional networks. One popular group of defense techniques against adver- sarial attacks is based on injecting stochastic noise into the network. The main source of robustness of such stochas- tic defenses however is often due to the obfuscation of the gradients, offering a false sense of security. Since most of the popular adversarial attacks are optimization-based, ob- fuscated gradients reduce their attacking ability, while the model is still susceptible to stronger or specifically tailored adversarial attacks. Recently, five characteristics have been identified, which are commonly observed when the improve- ment in robustness is mainly caused by gradient obfusca- tion. It has since become a trend to use these five char- acteristics as a sufficient test, to determine whether or not gradient obfuscation is the main source of robustness. How- ever, these characteristics do not perfectly characterize all existing cases of gradient obfuscation, and therefore can not serve as a basis for a conclusive test. In this work, we present a counterexample, showing this test is not suf- ficient for concluding that gradient obfuscation is not the main cause of improvements in robustness.

Depth cues are known to be useful for visual perception. However, direct measurement of depth is often impracticable. Fortunately, though, modern learning-based methods offer promising depth maps by inference in the wild. In this work, we adapt such depth inference models for object segmentation using the objects' ``pop-out'' prior in 3D. The ``pop-out'' is a simple composition prior that assumes objects reside on the background surface. Such compositional prior allows us to reason about objects in the 3D space. More specifically, we adapt the inferred depth maps such that objects can be localized using only 3D information. Such separation, however, requires knowledge about contact surface which we learn using the weak supervision of the segmentation mask. Our intermediate representation of contact surface, and thereby reasoning about objects purely in 3D, allows us to better transfer the depth knowledge into semantics. The proposed adaptation method uses only the depth model without needing the source data used for training, making the learning process efficient and practical. Our experiments on eight datasets of two challenging tasks, namely camouflaged object detection and salient object detection, consistently demonstrate the benefit of our method in terms of both performance and generalizability.

We study the problem of estimating 3D shape and pose of an object in terms of keypoints, from a single 2D image. The shape and pose are learned directly from images collected by categories and their partial 2D keypoint annotations.. In this work, we first propose an end-to-end training framework for intermediate 2D keypoints extraction and final 3D shape and pose estimation. The proposed framework is then trained using only the weak supervision of the intermediate 2D keypoints. Additionally, we devise a semi-supervised training framework that benefits from both labeled and unlabeled data. To leverage the unlabeled data, we introduce and exploit the \emph{piece-wise planar hull} prior of the canonical object shape. These planar hulls are defined manually once per object category, with the help of the keypoints. On the one hand, the proposed method learns to segment these planar hulls from the labeled data. On the other hand, it simultaneously enforces the consistency between predicted keypoints and the segmented hulls on the unlabeled data. The enforced consistency allows us to efficiently use the unlabeled data for the task at hand. The proposed method achieves comparable results with fully supervised state-of-the-art methods by using only half of the annotations. Our source code will be made publicly available.

Significant progress on the crowd counting problem has been achieved by integrating larger context into convolutional neural networks (CNNs). This indicates that global scene context is essential, despite the seemingly bottom-up nature of the problem. This may be explained by the fact that context knowledge can adapt and improve local feature extraction to a given scene. In this paper, we therefore investigate the role of global context for crowd counting. Specifically, a pure transformer is used to extract features with global information from overlapping image patches. Inspired by classification, we add a context token to the input sequence, to facilitate information exchange with tokens corresponding to image patches throughout transformer layers. Due to the fact that transformers do not explicitly model the tried-and-true channel-wise interactions, we propose a token-attention module (TAM) to recalibrate encoded features through channel-wise attention informed by the context token. Beyond that, it is adopted to predict the total person count of the image through regression-token module (RTM). Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on various datasets, including ShanghaiTech, UCF-QNRF, JHU-CROWD++ and NWPU. On the large-scale JHU-CROWD++ dataset, our method improves over the previous best results by 26.9% and 29.9% in terms of MAE and MSE, respectively.

We study the problem of robust domain adaptation in the context of unavailable target labels and source data. The considered robustness is against adversarial perturbations. This paper aims at answering the question of finding the right strategy to make the target model robust and accurate in the setting of unsupervised domain adaptation without source data. The major findings of this paper are: (i) robust source models can be transferred robustly to the target; (ii) robust domain adaptation can greatly benefit from non-robust pseudo-labels and the pair-wise contrastive loss. The proposed method of using non-robust pseudo-labels performs surprisingly well on both clean and adversarial samples, for the task of image classification. We show a consistent performance improvement of over $10\%$ in accuracy against the tested baselines on four benchmark datasets.

Localization by image retrieval is inexpensive and scalable due to simple mapping and matching techniques. Such localization, however, depends upon the quality of image features often obtained using Contrastive learning frameworks. Most contrastive learning strategies opt for features to distinguish different classes. In the context of localization, however, there is no natural definition of classes. Therefore, images are usually artificially separated into positive and negative classes, with respect to the chosen anchor images, based on some geometric proximity measure. In this paper, we show why such divisions are problematic for learning localization features. We argue that any artificial division based on some proximity measure is undesirable, due to the inherently ambiguous supervision for images near proximity threshold. To this end, we propose a novel technique that uses soft positive/negative assignments of images for contrastive learning, avoiding the aforementioned problem. Our soft assignment makes a gradual distinction between close and far images in both geometric and feature spaces. Experiments on four large-scale benchmark datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed soft contrastive learning over the state-of-the-art method for retrieval-based visual localization.

Autonomous navigation requires scene understanding of the action-space to move or anticipate events. For planner agents moving on the ground plane, such as autonomous vehicles, this translates to scene understanding in the bird's-eye view (BEV). However, the onboard cameras of autonomous cars are customarily mounted horizontally for a better view of the surrounding. In this work, we study scene understanding in the form of online estimation of semantic BEV maps using the video input from a single onboard camera. We study three key aspects of this task, image-level understanding, BEV level understanding, and the aggregation of temporal information. Based on these three pillars we propose a novel architecture that combines these three aspects. In our extensive experiments, we demonstrate that the considered aspects are complementary to each other for BEV understanding. Image features for retrieval-based localization must be invariant to dynamic objects (e.g. cars) as well as seasonal and daytime changes. Such invariances are, up to some extent, learnable with existing methods using triplet-like losses, given a large number of diverse training images. However, due to the high algorithmic training complexity, there exists insufficient comparison between different loss functions on large datasets. In this paper, we train and evaluate several localization methods on three different benchmark datasets, including Oxford RobotCar with over one million images. This large scale evaluation yields valuable insights into the generalizability and performance of retrieval-based localization. Based on our findings, we develop a novel method for learning more accurate and better generalizing localization features. It consists of two main contributions: (i) a feature volume-based loss function, and (ii) hard positive and pairwise negative mining. On the challenging Oxford RobotCar night condition, our method outperforms the well-known triplet loss by 24.4% in localization accuracy within 5m.

This paper presents a new problem of unpaired face translation between images and videos, which can be applied to facial video prediction and enhancement. In this problem there exist two major technical challenges: 1) designing a robust translation model between static images and dynamic videos, and 2) preserving facial identity during image-video translation. To address such two problems, we generalize the state-of-the-art image-to-image translation network (Cycle-Consistent Adversarial Networks) to the image-to-video/video-to-image translation context by exploiting a image-video translation model and an identity preservation model. In particular, we apply the state-of-the-art Wasserstein GAN technique to the setting of image-video translation for better convergence, and we meanwhile introduce a face verificator to ensure the identity. Experiments on standard image/video face datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model in both terms of qualitative and quantitative evaluations.
