Although several regulations have been implemented for medical school admission, such as a quota system, the uneven distribution of healthcare personnel across regions is an unresolved problem in Korea. This study explores the distribution and retention rate of clinicians across regions according to the degree of experience staying in the current clinical area during high school/medical school/resident training using 2016 Korean Physician Survey data. Both in metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas, clinicians who completed high school, medical school, and resident training in the current practice region (Subgroup D) accounted for the largest proportion (Metro, n = 1611, 46.1%; non-metro, n = 1917, 52.9%). The retention rate was the highest in Subgroup D both in metropolitan (84.3%) and non-metropolitan areas (Chungcheong 86.2%, Jeolla 79.9%, Daegu/Gyeongbuk 81.6%, Busan/Ulsan/Gyeongnam 93.3%) except Gangwon and Jeju. The second, third, and fourth highest retention rates were observed in cases where clinicians completed their high school and resident training, medical school and resident training, and resident training only, respectively, in all regions, although the ranking differs by region. To increase the retention rate of physicians, this study shows that it is necessary for a student to seek ways to continue training in the same region in which they graduated from medical school. The purposes of this study were to quantify the time-weighted, lifetime average, daily intake (LADI) of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through food ingestion and to estimate the excess cancer risk based on lifetime dietary PAH intake. Twenty-seven different food commodities were selected from the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition survey based on their frequent consumption and high PAH level. The foods were analyzed for the profile of 14 PAH congeners using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and fluorescence detector. Considering the toxic equivalent (TEQ) level converted with the toxic equivalent factors (TEFs), the highest total TEQ level of PAHs in foods was detected from roasted laver at 1.2 ug TEQ/kg. For the PAH exposure assessment according to ingested foods, the average body weight was separated according to the following age groups, 1-6, 7-19, 20-64 and over 64 years, and the daily food ingestion rates from the National Health and Nutrition survey were used. The estimated Lifetime Average Daily Intake (LADI) of PAHs was 3.22 × 10-3 ug/kg/day for carcinogenic effects and was higher in the younger age groups under 20 years old than in the older groups. The dietary excess cancer risk estimated using the cancer potency of benzo(a)pyrene (7.3(mg/kg/day)-1) was 2.3 × 10-5, which is equivalent to a probability of tumor eruption in the upper gastrointestinal tract of two per hundred thousand persons. The persistence of pathogenic Escherichia coli under acidic conditions poses a serious risk to food safety, especially in acidic foods such as kimchi. To identify the bacterial factors required for acid resistance, transcriptomic analysis was conducted on an acid-resistant enterotoxigenic E. coli strain and the genes with significant changes in their expression under acidic pH were selected as putative resistance factors against acid stress. These genes included those associated with a glutamatedependent acid resistance (GDAR) system and copper resistance. E. coli strains lacking GadA, GadB, or YbaST, the components of the GDAR system, exhibited significantly attenuated growth and survival under acidic stress conditions. Accordantly, the inhibition of the GDAR system by 3-mercaptopropionic acid and aminooxyacetic acid abolished bacterial adaptation and survival under acidic conditions, indicating the indispensable role of a GDAR system in acid resistance. Intriguingly, the lack of cueR encoding a transcriptional regulator for copper resistance genes markedly impaired bacterial resistance to acid stress as well as copper. Conversely, the absence of YbaST severely compromised bacterial resistance against copper, suggesting an interplay between acid and copper resistance. These results suggest that a GDAR system can be a promising target for developing control measures to prevent E. coli resistance to acid and copper treatments.
