Objective: We investigated the effect of high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) on intracranial aneurysms (IAs) by analyzing single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) based on genome-wide association study (GWAS) data. HMGB1 mRNA and protein expression levels in plasma were also analyzed. Methods: This study was a comprehensive analysis of a GWAS dataset, including 250 patients with IAs and 294 controls. The HMGB1 gene region was targeted within SNP rs3742305 ± 10 kbp. Multivariate logistic regression analysis determined its association with IAs after adjusting for relevant clinical factors. HMGB1 mRNA expression was analyzed in the plasma of 24 patients selected from the GWAS dataset. The HMGB1 protein was analyzed by Western blotting. Results: A total of seven polymorphisms, including rs1360485, rs185382445, rs2039338, rs1045411, rs3742305, rs2249825, and rs189034241, were observed. Two SNPs, including rs1045411 (UTR-3) and rs3742305 (intron), showed strong linkage disequilibrium (r2 = 0.99). However, none of the seven SNPs associated with IAs had an adjusted p-value of < 0.0016 on multiple comparison analysis. HMGB1 mRNA levels (2−ΔCt) did not differ significantly between patients with IAs and the control subjects [1.07 (1.00–1.15) in patients with IAs vs. 1.05 (0.94–1.12) in controls; p = 0.67)]. Also, no significant difference in the degree of plasma HMGB1 protein expression was seen between the two groups (p = 0.82). Conclusions: The number of SNPs associated with HMGB1 and the degree of HMGB1 mRNA and protein expression were not significantly different between patients diagnosed with IAs and the controls. Ruptured aneurysms of the lateral spinal artery (LSA) causing subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) are exceptionally rare. Unlike common aneurysms in the circle of Willis, LSA aneurysms present unique diagnostic and therapeutic challenges due to their complex anatomy. We reviewed the literature, examining case reports detailing LSA aneurysm occurrences, diagnoses, treatments, and complications, and our subsequent analysis highlights the clinical presentations, imaging findings, treatment methods, and anatomical features of the LSA. We identified 10 patients from 7 case reports of LSA aneurysm presenting with SAH, and combined with the present case, this comprised a total of 11 patients. An initial CT angiography identified LSA aneurysm in only 2 of 11 patients, while 5 cases were detected in transfemoral cerebral angiography. Seven patients had stenosis or occlusion of nearby arteries. Among the 10 patients treated, 7 underwent microsurgical clipping, and 3 had endovascular treatment; complications included PICA infarction and subdural hematoma. LSA aneurysms, though rare, should be considered in differential diagnoses of posterior fossa SAH. An accurate diagnosis often requires repeated imaging. It is proposed to individualize treatment strategies based on the unique anatomical structure and hemodynamic conditions of each patient, utilizing both endovascular and surgical approaches. Background: Recent studies utilizing weight-bearing computed tomography have identified abnormal internal rotation of the talus in advanced varus ankle arthritis (VAA) with a large talar tilt (TT), influenced by the posterior tibial tendon (PTT). This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and radiographic results of supramalleolar osteotomy (SMO) combined with PTT release and lateral ligament augmentation for VAA with a large TT. Methods: From January 2015 to September 2018, 15 patients with VAA and a large TT (greater than 5°) underwent SMO combined with PTT release. Clinical results, including visual analog scale (VAS) for pain, American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score, and ankle osteoarthritis scale (AOS), were assessed. Radiographic results were assessed with various parameters, including medial distal tibial angle (MDTA), anterior distal tibial angle (ADTA), talar tilt (TT), talus center migration (TCM), Meary angle, hindfoot alignment angle (HAA), and hindfoot moment arm (HMA) on foot and ankle weight-bearing radiographs. Clinical and radiographic results were evaluated preoperatively and at the last follow-up. Results: VAS, AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score, and AOS improved significantly from 7.5, 54.4, and 72.6 preoperatively to 3.1, 82.5, and 34.5 postoperatively, respectively. All radiographic parameters exhibited significant changes postoperatively, with the exception of the Meary angle, which demonstrated no significant change. Four patients exhibited improvement in radiographic stage postoperatively; however, average radiographic stage did not significantly improve postoperatively in all patients. One patient progressed to end-stage arthritis postoperatively, necessitating additional ankle arthrodesis. Conclusions: In conclusion, lengthening and lateral ligament augmentation combined with bony realignment procedures may be a reasonable option for treating VAA with a large TT greater that 5°. Polyolefin elastomer (POE) films can be used as a matrix for ultra‐high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fiber‐reinforced composites via a hot‐melt process. However, the low melting temperature of UHMWPE limits composite processing. Therefore, this study aimed to create a film by blending POE with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) to reduce the film's processing temperature. Morphological analysis revealed that due to limited compatibility, EVA appeared as droplets within the immiscible POE matrix. T‐Peel tests demonstrated increased self‐adhesion in both the POE/EVA films and the fiber‐reinforced composites with higher EVA content. However, the mechanical properties of POE/EVA films, including tensile properties and shore hardness, were reduced due to EVA having lower inherent properties. UHMWPE fiber‐reinforced composites were fabricated from these films. In composites, optimal tensile and flexural properties were observed at lower EVA content. Scanning electron microscopy analysis suggests that the POE/EVA films are sufficiently infiltrated at 10–20 wt% EVA content. As EVA content increased, the drop weight impact test indicated a reduction in the maximum impact load and an increase in impact energy, attributed to improved adhesion and a broader distribution of impact load across the interface. Previously, we reported the concept of a cloud-based telemedicine platform for patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) at local emergency rooms in rural and medically underserved areas in Gangwon state by combining artificial intelligence and remote consultation with a neurosurgeon. Developing a telemedicine ICH treatment protocol exclusively for doctors with less ICH expertise working in emergency rooms should be part of establishing this system. Difficulties arise in providing appropriate early treatment for ICH in rural and underserved areas before the patient is transferred to a nearby hub hospital with stroke specialists. This has been an unmet medical need for decades. The available reporting ICH guidelines are realistically applicable in university hospitals with a well-equipped infrastructure. However, it is very difficult for doctors inexperienced with ICH treatment to appropriately select and deliver ICH treatment based on the guidelines. To address these issues, we developed an ICH telemedicine protocol. Neurosurgeons from four university hospitals in Gangwon state first wrote the guidelines, and professors with extensive ICH expertise across the country revised them. Guidelines and recommendations for ICH management were described as simply as possible to allow more doctors to use them easily. We hope that our effort in developing the telemedicine protocols will ultimately improve the quality of ICH treatment in local emergency rooms in rural and underserved areas in Gangwon state. This study focused on manufacturing efficient automobile sound-absorbing materials through alkaline treatment and dimple processing of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) nonwoven fabric. The rPET nonwoven fabric was produced with a sound-absorbing material through compression molding. It was improved through the development of porous sound-absorbing materials through alkaline treatment and resonant sound-absorbing materials through dimple processing. As a result of morphological analysis, alkaline treatment showed that pore size and air permeability increased according to temperature and concentration increase conditions. On the other hand, dimple processing caused a decrease in air permeability and a decrease in pores due to yarn fusion, and as the dimple diameter increased, the sound-absorbing coefficient increased in the 5000 Hz band. Finally, it was judged that effective sound absorption performance would be improved through a simple process through alkaline treatment and dimple processing, and thus there would be applicability in various industrial fields. In this study, surface modification aimed to enhance the compatibility between a hydrophilic inorganic filler and polypropylene (PP) matrix using hydrophobic treatment. Lauric acid, butyl acrylate, and maleic anhydride were employed to modify the filler surface. After treatment, inorganic filler/PP composites were produced using melt-mixing and extrusion–injection molding processes. The study focused on investigating compatibility and migration behavior between the filler and matrix. The findings indicated that hydrophobic modification, specifically with butyl acrylate and maleic anhydride, improved migration issues in nano-whisker, while maintaining favorable mechanical properties even under accelerated thermal aging. However, excessive hydrophobicity induced by superhydrophobic treatment using lauric acid led to reduced compatibility with the matrix, compromising its effectiveness. Consequently, the study revealed the potential of surface modification to enhance interfacial properties and mitigate migration concerns in PP composites for automotive applications. We aimed to investigate whether mitochondrial dysfunction in extracellular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which is associated with autophagy and mitophagy, might be involved in neurological outcomes in adult patients with hemorrhagic moyamoya disease (MMD) whose pathogenesis related to poor outcomes is not well-known. CSF samples were collected from 43 adult MMD patients and analyzed according to outcomes at 3 months. Fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis (FACS) and the JC-1 red/green ratio were used to assess mitochondrial cells and intact mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). We performed quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting analyses of autophagy and mitophagy-related markers, including HIF1α, ATG5, pBECN1, BECN1, BAX, BNIP3L, DAPK1, and PINK1. Finally, FACS analysis with specific fluorescence-conjugated antibodies was performed to evaluate the potential cellular origin of CSF mitochondrial cells. Twenty-seven females (62.8%) with a mean age of 47.4 ± 9.7 years were included in the study. Among 43 patients with hemorrhagic MMD, 23 (53.5%) had poor outcomes. The difference in MMP was evident between the two groups (2.4 ± 0.2 in patients with poor outcome vs. 3.5 ± 0.4 in patients with good outcome; p = 0.02). A significantly higher expression (2–ΔCt) of HIF1α, ATG5, DAPK1 followed by BAX and BNIP3L mRNA and protein was also observed in poor-outcome patients compared to those with good outcomes. Higher percentage of vWF-positive mitochondria, suggesting endothelial cell origins, was observed in patients with good outcome compared with those with poor outcome (25.0 ± 1.4% in patients with good outcome vs. 17.5 ± 1.5% in those with poor outcome; p < 0.01). We observed the association between increased mitochondrial dysfunction concomitant with autophagy and mitophagy in CSF cells and neurological outcomes in adult patients with hemorrhagic MMD. The appropriate surgical management of osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLT) remains a challenge for foot and ankle surgeons. Currently, microfracture (MF) is the first-line operative treatment for small osteochondral lesions. However, the fibrous cartilage regenerated after MF is mechanically inferior to hyaline cartilage regeneration and is susceptible to deterioration over time. Thus, this meta-analysis aimed to elucidate the efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) augmentation compared with MF only or other adjuvant supplementations combined with the PRP + MF group (others) for the management of OLT. We searched the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for studies that compared the clinical outcomes of patients who underwent MF only and those who underwent PRP or other adjuvant materials such as hyaluronic acid or BST-CarGel. After the screening, four randomized controlled trials and one quasi-randomized controlled trial were included in this review. We used the following tools for clinical evaluation: the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score, Ankle–Hindfoot Scale score, Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score for pain, and the Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) score. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was used to analyze the differences in outcomes between groups. Patients in the PRP + MF group had superior final VAS and AOFAS scores to the MF only group. (both p < 0.01) However, no significant improvements between baseline and final follow-up were noted in either score. In addition, there was no remarkable difference in the overall FAAM pain measures between the two groups. The PRP + MF and others groups revealed no significant effect differences in the clinical scores. We evaluated the therapeutic effects of bone-marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) on behavioral and cognitive function in a mouse model of mild subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and explored the underlying mechanisms in conjunction with the HMGB1–RAGE axis. The SAH models were generated in a total of 126 male C57BL/6J mice via endovascular perforation and evaluated 24 h and 72 h after the intravenous administration of BMSCs (3 × 105 cells). The BMSCs were administered once, at 3 h, or twice, at 3 h and 48 h after the model induction. The therapeutic effects of the BMSCs were compared to those of the saline administration. Compared to saline-treated SAH-model mice, at 3 h, the mice with mild SAH treated with the BMSCs showed significant improvements in their neurological scores and cerebral edema. The administration of the BMSCs decreased the mRNA expression of HMGB1, RAGE, TLR4, and MyD88, as well as the protein expression of HMGB1 and phosphorylated NF-kB p65. Furthermore, the numbers of slips per walking time, impairments in short-term memory, and the recognition of novel objects were improved. There was some improvement in inflammatory-marker levels and cognitive function according to the BMSCs' administration times, but no large differences were seen. The administration of BMSCs improved behavioral and cognitive dysfunction by ameliorating HMGB1–RAGE axis-mediated neuroinflammation after SAH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
