Background Bone mineral density (BMD) predicts fracture risk in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and in the general population. However, few studies have investigated risk factors for bone loss in patients with CKD. The aim of this study was to investigate whether renal function is associated with the rate of BMD decline. Methods A prospective cohort study included 1006 patients with CKD stages 2–4 between 2011 and 2016. BMD was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline and 4 years. The eGFR was measured 2–6 times during the 4-year follow-up. We analyzed the decline in bone mineral density according to CKD stage and further compared the rate of BMD decline according to eGFR trajectories at each stage. Results Advanced CKD stage was associated with a faster rate of decline in total hip BMD [stage 2 −0.23, stage 3A −0.39, stage 3B −0.80, stage 4 −1.23% change/year in men (P < .001); stage 2 −0.86, stage 3A −1.19, stage 3B −1.20, stage 4 −1.58% change/year in women (P  < .03)]. Two distinct eGFR trajectories (Class 1 stable group; Class 2 rapid decline group) were observed. The rapid decline group showed a trend toward an increased rate of decline in total hip BMD. Subgroup analysis according to eGFR trajectories revealed a significant difference in BMD decline rate between stable and rapid decline groups. Background: The 2021 Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) clinical practice guideline for the management of blood pressure (BP) in chronic kidney disease (CKD) recommends a target systolic BP of <120 mmHg as this target can provide cardiovascular benefits. However, it remains unclear whether implementing the new BP target could improve kidney outcomes. Methods: The association between the 2021 KDIGO BP target and CKD progression was examined and compared with the 2012 KDIGO BP target among 1724 participants included in the KoreaN Cohort Study for Outcomes in Patients With CKD. The main exposure was the BP status categorized according to the 2012 or 2021 KDIGO guideline: (1) controlled within the 2021 target, (2) controlled within the 2012 target only, and (3) above both targets. The primary outcome was a composite kidney outcome of ≥50% decline in the estimated glomerular filtration rate from baseline or the initiation of kidney replacement therapy during the follow‐up period. Results: Composite kidney outcomes occurred in 650 (37.7%) participants during the 8078 person‐years of follow‐up (median, 4.9 years). The incidence rates of this outcome were 55, 66.5, and 116.4 per 1000 person‐years in BP controlled within the 2021 and 2012 KDIGO targets, and BP above both targets, respectively. In the multivariable cause‐specific hazard model, hazard ratios for the composite outcome were 0.76 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.60–0.95) for BP controlled within the 2021 target and 1.36 (95% CI, 1.13–1.64) for BP above both targets, compared with BP controlled within 2012 target only. Background: Elevated blood pressure and intrarenal renin-angiotensin system activity are closely related to chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. However, interrelationship between blood pressure and intrarenal renin-angiotensin system activity on the risk of CKD progression is unknown. Methods: We analyzed 2076 participants from the Korean Cohort Study for Outcomes in Patients With CKD. The main exposure was systolic blood pressure (SBP). The urinary angiotensinogen-to-creatinine ratio was stratified according to the median value (3.65 μg/gCr). The primary outcome was a composite kidney outcome of a ≥50% decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate from baseline measurement or initiation of kidney replacement therapy. Results: During 10 550 person-years of follow-up (median, 5.2 years), the composite outcome occurred in 800 (38.5%) participants. In the multivariable cause-specific hazard model, higher SBP was associated with an increased risk of CKD progression. There was a significant interaction between SBP and urinary angiotensinogen-to-creatinine ratio on the risk of the primary outcome (P value for interaction=0.019). In patients with urinary angiotensinogen-to-creatinine <3.65 μg/gCr, the hazard ratios (95% CIs) for SBP 120 to 129, 130 to 139, and ≥140 mmHg were 1.46 (1.07–1.99), 1.71 (1.25–2.35), and 2.40 (1.73–3.32), respectively, compared with SBP <120 mmHg. However, these associations were not observed in patients with urinary angiotensinogen-to-creatinine ≥3.65 μg/gCr. Conclusions: In this prospective CKD cohort, higher SBP was associated with CKD progression when urinary angiotensinogen levels were low, while this association was not seen when urinary angiotensinogen levels were high. Kidney fibrosis is a common pathophysiological mechanism of chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression caused by several underlying kidney diseases. Among various contributors to kidney fibrosis, transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) is the major factor driving fibrosis. TGF-β1 exerts its profibrotic attributes via the activation of canonical and non-canonical signaling pathways, which induce proliferation and activation of myofibroblasts and subsequent accumulation of extracellular matrix. Over the past few decades, studies have determined the TGF-β1 signaling pathway inhibitors and evaluated whether they could ameliorate the progression of CKD by hindering kidney fibrosis. However, therapeutic strategies that block TGF-β1 signaling have usually demonstrated unsatisfactory results. Herein, we discuss the therapeutic concepts of the TGF-β1 signaling pathway and its inhibitors and review the current state of the art regarding regarding TGF-β1 inhibitors in CKD management. Thermal sensitivity of anthocyanin and low‐water solubility of rutin limit their stability in processed foods and biological activity, respectively. Therefore, we aimed to develop a value‐added food composite (VAFC) by mixing of anthocyanin‐enriched potato (P) and rutin‐enriched buckwheat (B) flour using soy lecithin (LCT) and vitamin E (Vita E) by hot‐melt extrusion (HME). The VAFC was formulated using P 50% + B 50% (F1), P 45%+B 45%+LCT 10% (F2), and P 45%+B 45%+LCT 8%+Vita E 2% (F3). Results revealed that the solubility of the VAFC was significantly increased in F3 formulation. Likewise, total phenolic content, including single phenolic acids, total flavonoid including rutin and quercetin, total anthocyanin including single anthocyanins, and antioxidant capacity of the VAFC were significantly increased in F3 formulation. This study successfully demonstrated the approach of developing biopolymer‐mediated functional VAFC from potato and buckwheat by HME. Practical applications: People are becoming more conscious about daily consumed foods and their nutritional facts. Human health requires a well‐balanced nutritional composition to keep well‐functioning of the body. In this study, an approach was taken to develop anthocyanins, and rutin‐enriched functional food by the mixes of potato and buckwheat by hot‐melt extrusion. Food biopolymers and plasticizer were added to the food formulation to enhance the activity of the extrudate composites' functional attributes. Recently, interest in exploring phytochemicals with health benefits has grown significantly. In this research, we aimed to develop the processing profile and functionality of Moringa oleifera Lam. Here, we implemented biopolymer-mediated extrudate formulations of M. oleifera (leaves, seed, and husk) in order to enhance the phenolic, flavonoid, and antioxidant capacity. The formulation-1 (F1) was prepared for leaves, seed, and husk using biopolymers (10% w/w), namely: whey protein isolate (10% w/w) and lecithin (5% w/w) with vitamin E (2% w/w). The formulation-2 (F2) was composed of lecithin (5% w/w) with ascorbyl palmitate (10% w/w) and vitamin E (2% w/w), processed by hot-melt extrusion (HME). It was observed that the total phenol and flavonoid contents were persistent in the lecithin-mediated F2 formulation of leaves, seed, and husk. Likewise, antioxidant capacity was significantly stayed in the F2 formulation of all organs, compared to the extrudate and control. The IC50 values revealed that the leaves of the F2 formulation showed strong free radical scavenging capacity compared to the F2 formulation of seed and husk. Perilla frutescens (L.) Britton var. frutescens is extensively cultivated on a large scale throughout the Korea, whereas var. crispa is not. The weedy types of both var. frutescens and var. crispa are often found along roadsides, waste lands, and around farmers' fields. Although Perilla is one of the important leafy vegetable and oil crops in Korea, systematic analyses on its genetic structure have been limited and are needed for future breeding progress. The objective of this study was to determine genetic diversity and relatedness in Korean accessions of Perilla. Field surveys and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analyses were conducted to determine genetic diversity. Analyses of 30 Perilla accessions by seven AFLP primer combinations identified a total of 121 fragments, of which 72 (60%) were polymorphic at the species level. Shanon's index of diversity Hs of the AFLP variations for cultivated type of var. frutescens, weedy type of var. frutescens, and weedy type of var. crispa were 0.63, 2.00, and 1.75, respectively. The weedy type of var. frutescens exhibited the highest variation. Most of the AFLP variation (78%) resided within populations. In the phylogenetic tree, two major clusters were recognized: (i) cultivated type of var. frutescens and weedy type of var. frutescens and (ii) weedy type of var. crispa. Background Urinary chloride is regulated by kidney transport channels, and high urinary chloride concentration in the distal tubules can trigger tubuloglomerular feedback. However, little attention has been paid to urinary chloride as a biomarker of clinical outcomes. Here, we studied the relationship between urinary chloride concentration and chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression. Methods We included 2086 participants with CKD from the KoreaN cohort study for Outcomes in patients With Chronic Kidney Disease. Patients were categorized into three groups, according to baseline urinary chloride concentration tertiles. The study endpoint was a composite of ≥50% decrease in estimated glomerular filtration rate from baseline values, or end-stage kidney disease. Results During a median follow-up period of 3.4 years (7452 person-years), 565 participants reached the primary endpoint. There was a higher rate of CKD progression events in the lowest and middle tertiles than in the highest tertile. Compared with the lowest tertile, the highest tertile was associated with 33% [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.49–0.90] lower risk for the primary outcome in a cause-specific hazard model after adjustment for confounding variables. In addition, for every 25 mEq/L increase in urinary chloride concentration, there was 11% (95% CI 0.83–0.96) lower risk for CKD progression. This association was consistent in a time-varying model. Urinary chloride concentration correlated well with tubule function and kidney injury markers, and its predictive performance for CKD progression was comparable to that of these markers. This study investigates changes in return and volatility spillovers between the LME/COMEX and the SHFE copper futures markets before and after the global financial crisis and after the introduction of the night trading session (NTS) to the SHFE using asymmetric multivariate GARCH models. The results show that the SHFE has not been stronger to the LME/COMEX in information spillover effects, even though it has grown substantially in terms of trading volume after the crisis. The high mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) is a well-known late mediator of sepsis, secreted by multiple stimuli, involving pathways, such as the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) pathways, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) under inflammation. Sulfatide, in contrast, is a sphingolipid commonly found in myelin sheets with a disputed immunological role. We sought to determine the immunological characteristics of sulfatide in the periphery by analyzing the secretion of HMGB1 triggered by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) stimulation in Raw 264.7 cells. Suppression of HMGB1 secretion by inhibiting its cytosolic translocation was observed after pre-treatment with sulfatide before LPS stimulation. Further analysis of the downstream molecules of toll-like receptor (TLR) signaling revealed suppression of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) phosphorylation and p65 translocation. LPS-mediated ROS production was also decreased when sulfatide pre-treatment was provided, caused by the down-regulation of the phosphorylation of activators, such as IRAK4 and TBK1. Investigation of the upstream mechanism that encompasses all the aforementioned inhibitory characteristics unveiled the involvement of lipid rafts. In addition to the co-localization of biotinylated sulfatide and monosialotetrahexosylganglioside, a decrease in LPS-induced co-localization of TLR4 and lipid raft markers was observed when sulfatide treatment was given before LPS stimulation. Overall, sulfatide was found to exert its anti-inflammatory properties by hindering the co-localization of TLR4 and lipid rafts, nullifying the effect of LPS on TLR4 signaling. Similar effects of sulfatide were also confirmed in the LPS-mediated murine experimental sepsis model, showing decreased levels of serum HMGB1, increased survivability, and reduced pathological severity. Background There is a general consensus that elevated serum beta-2 microglobulin (B2M) levels measured at a single time-point are significantly associated with mortality in patients on maintenance dialysis. To date, the majority of prior studies that have examined B2M-associated mortality have been conducted in prevalent hemodialysis patients with little residual renal function (RRF). However, studies in incident peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are lacking. Moreover, changes in serum B2M levels over time have not been considered in this population. Methods We examined the association of time-updated and baseline serum B2M levels with mortality in a 10-year cohort of 725 incident PD patients who were maintained on dialysis between January 2006 and December 2011 using Cox proportional hazards regression analyses. Patients were categorized into tertiles according to B2M levels. Results During a median follow-up of 38 (interquartile range 23–64) months, 258 (35.4%) deaths occurred, including 106 (14.6%) and 86 (11.9%) deaths from cardiovascular and infectious causes, respectively. The lowest B2M tertile was associated with a higher risk of all-cause and infectious mortality compared with the middle tertile: the hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for all-cause deaths were 2.12 (1.38–3.26) and 2.20 (0.96–5.05) in time-varying analyses and 1.52 (1.07–2.17) and 2.41 (1.19–4.88) in baseline analyses. Subgroup analyses showed that this association was particularly observed in females, older patients, those with comorbidities such as diabetes, a lower body mass index, lower albumin levels or those with higher RRF (all P for interactions <0.05). Conclusions In incident PD patients, lower B2M levels were independently associated with overall and infectious mortality. Background and Aim: Cardiovascular (CV) disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in patients on peritoneal dialysis (PD). Hyponatremia was recently shown to be a modifiable factor that is strongly associated with increased mortality in PD patients. However, the clinical impact of hyponatremia on CV outcomes in these patients is unclear. Methods: To determine whether a low serum sodium level predicts the development of CV disease, we carried out a prospective observational study of 441 incident patients who started PD between January 2000 and December 2005. Time-averaged serum sodium (TA-Na) levels were determined to investigate the ability of hyponatremia to predict newly developed CV events in these patients. Results: During a mean follow-up of 43.2 months, 106 (24.0%) patients developed new CV events. The cumulative incidence of new-onset CV events after the initiation of PD was significantly higher in patients with TA-Na levels ≤ 138 mEq/L than in those with a TA-Na > 138 mEq/L. After adjustment for multiple potentially confounding covariates, an increase in TA-Na level was found to be associated with a significantly lower risk of CV events (subdistribution hazard ratio per 1 mEq/L increase, 0.90; 95% confidence interval, 0.83–0.96; p = 0.003). Patients with a TA-Na ≤ 138 mEq/L had a 2.31-fold higher risk of suffering a CV event. Conclusions: These results provide evidence of a clear association between low serum sodium and new-onset CV events after dialysis initiation in PD patients. Whether the correction of hyponatremia for this indication provides additional protection for the development of CV disease in these patients remains to be addressed in interventional studies. The influences of metal-induced laterally crystallized silicon channel corners on the performance and reliability of thin-film transistors (TFTs) were investigated. It was found that the TFT with the channel width, mostly applied to active matrix organic light-emitting diodes, had weak immunity to electrical stresses because of the heaviest weight of silicide-rich channel corner on the channel width by the geometric effect. The proposed TFT fabrication, which is composed of two consecutive adjacent step switches, makes TFTs practically channel-corner-free, resulting in high reliability. The current study investigated whether the phytoglycoprotein (75 kDa) isolated from Cudrania tricuspidata Bureau (CTB glycoprotein) has anti-allergic inflammatory potential. Bisphenol A (BPA) is well known to promote development of allergy-related immune dysfunction. This experiment evaluated the release of histamine, increased intracellular Ca2+ level, and the activities of protein kinase C α (PKC α), transcription factors NFκB and cytokines (IL-4, and IFN-γ) in BPA-treated RBL-2H3 cells. The results in this study showed that the phytoglycoprotein (75 kDa) inhibits the intracellular Ca2+ level, translocation of PKC α from cytosol to membrane and the translocation of NF-κB in cells. We also found that the phytoglycoprotein (75 kDa) inhibits the release of histamine, and the expressions of cytokines (IL-4 and IFN-γ) in the presence of BPA in RBL-2H3 cells. The results obtained from these experiments indicated that the phytoglycoprotein (75 kDa) inhibits release of histamine and expressions of IL-4, and IFN-γ via down regulations of Ca2+/PKCα and NF-κB on the stage of degranulation induced by BPA. The article presents a study to assess the anti-inflammatory potential of 115 kDa glycoprotein separated from Zanthoxylum piperitum DC leaves (ZPDC glycoprotein) in primary cultured mouse thymocytes. The study concludes that production of the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) is inhibited by ZPDC glycoprotein. It asserts that ZPDC glycoprotein has anti-inflammatory potentials and is useful as health food supplement and as oriental medicine for healing inflammation.

Holigarna caustica (Dennst.), a popular plant used in folk medicine in Bangladesh, is often used by the local folk practitioner to treat a variety of chronic diseases. The present research is an attempt to find out an innovative therapeutic prospect for the management of neuropsychiatric disorders. The methanol extract of H. caustica leaves (MEHC) were utilized on various behavioral tests for assessing anxiolytic, anti-depressant, and anti-inflammatory activities. The antioxidant potentials and quantitative phytochemicals were evaluated through spectrophotometric methods. Results revealed that treatment of MEHC (200 and 400 mg/kg) significantly reduced anxiety like behaviors in mice, particularly, 400 mg/kg efficiently improved % of entries and time spent (p < 0.05) in the open arms in elevated plus maze test, whereas, superior head dipping tendency (p < 0.05) was observed in hole-board test. In contrast, mice treated with 200 mg/kg revealed better anxiolytic effect in both open field and hole-cross tests. During antidepressant evaluation, mice administrated with MEHC exhibited active behaviors (swimming and struggling) in forced swimming and tail suspension tests. In parallel, MEHC manifested a noteworthy (p < 0.001) suppression of inflammatory response induced by histamine. The MEHC also showed strong antioxidant activities in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) (IC50: 57.64 μg/mL) scavenging, H2O2 (IC50: 51.60 μg/mL) scavenging, and ferric reducing power assay. The levels of total phenol, flavonoid, flavonol, condensed tannin, and antioxidant were estimated as higher in MEHC. Moreover, 11 compounds were documented as bioactive, displayed good binding affinities to potassium channel receptor, human serotonin receptor, cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and 2), and xanthine oxidoreductase enzyme targets in molecular docking experiments. Furthermore, ADME/T and Prediction of Activity Spectra for Substances (PASS) analyses exposed their drug-likeness, nontoxic upon consumption, and likely pharmacological actions. Overall, the H. caustica is potentially bioactive as evident by in vivo, in vitro, and computational analysis. Plant production in urban areas is receiving much attention due to its potential role in feeding the rapidly growing population of city dwellers. However, higher energy demands in urban plant factories are among the key challenges that need to be addressed. Artificial lighting is responsible for the most significant levels of energy consumption in plant factories; therefore, lighting systems must be modulated in consideration of the sustainable food–energy nexus. In this context, low light irradiation using blue (B) and red (R) LED was applied in a plant factory for the growth of red leaf lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var Lollo rosso) to evaluate the growth performance and functional quality. The tested B (450 nm) and R (660 nm) light ratios were B/R = 5:1; 3:1; 1:1; 1:3, and 1:5, with a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 90 ± 3 µmol m−2 s−1. In the plant factory, the photoperiod, temperature, RH, and CO2 conditions were 16 h d−1, 20 ± 0.5 °C, 65% ± 5%, and 360 ± 10 μL L−1, respectively. The lettuce was harvested 10 and 20 days after the commencement of LED light treatment (DAT). In this study, normal photosynthetic activity and good visual quality of the lettuce were observed. The results show that a higher fraction of R (B/R = 1:5) significantly increased plant growth parameters such as plant height, leaf area, specific leaf area, plant fresh and dry weight, and carbohydrate content. By contrast, a higher fraction of B (B/R = 5:1) significantly increased the photosynthetic parameters and contents of pigment and phenolic compounds. The rate of photosynthetic performance, carbohydrates (except starch), and content of phenolic compounds were highest after 10 DAT, whereas the pigment contents did not significantly differ at the different growth stages. It is concluded that high R fractions favor plant growth and carbohydrate content, while high B fractions favor photosynthetic performance and the accumulation of pigments and phenolic compounds in red leaf lettuce under limited lighting conditions. Angelica gigas Nakai (AGN) is a popular traditional herbal medicine which has been used to alleviate various human diseases in Korea since ancient times. However, the low bioaccessibility of the nutraceutical compounds of AGN results in a poor water solubility, thereby limiting bioavailability. In this regard, a ternary AGN–biopolymer–plasticizer composite (AGNC) was developed to enhance the bioaccessibility of nutraceutical compounds from extrudate AGN formulations manufactured by hot melt extrusion (HME). The AGNC was prepared with extrudate AGN (EAGN) using different hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC) biopolymers (5% w/w) viz.: hypromellose phthalate (HP), hypromellose (AN), and hypromellose (CN) along with acetic acid (AA) (0.1 M, 20% w/v) as a plasticizer. The non-extrudate fresh AGN (FAGN) powder was used as a control. The physicochemical properties of the extrudate formulations and control were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). DSC analysis showed a lower enthalpy (ΔH) (12.22 J/g) and lower glass transition temperature (Tg) (41 °C) in HP-AA-EAGN compared to the control. FTIR confirmed the physical crosslinking between AGN and biopolymer in the extrudate composite and demonstrated that some functional groups formed viz., -OH and -CH2. The obtained result also shows that the particle size was reduced by 341 nm, and solubility was increased by 65.5% in HP-AA-EAGN compared to the control (1499 nm, 29.4%, respectively). The bioaccessibility of the total phenolic content and the total flavonoids—including decursin (D) and decursinol angelate (DA)—were significantly higher in HP-AA-EAGN compared to the control. The 2,2-diphenyl-1 picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging capacity and ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP) indicated that the HP-AA-EAGN formulation preserves a greater antioxidant profile than the other formulations. Finally, it is summarized that the addition of acidified HP biopolymer increased the bioaccessibility, functionality, and improved the physicochemical properties of nutraceutical compounds in the extrudate AGN formulation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth characteristics and pigment content of tomato plantlets grown under various ratios of red (R) (661 nm) and blue (B) (449 nm) LED light. In this study, three different ratios of R and B (RB) light such as 5:01, 10:01, and 19:01 along with R (100%) were used. The photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD), and photoperiod of the growth chamber was 120 ± 5 μmol m−2s−1 and 16/8 h (day/night), respectively. Tomato plantlets were cultured for six weeks in the growth chamber. It was shown that tomato plantlets had higher photosynthesis rate, higher pigments content, higher growth characteristics (e.g., number of leaves, leaf area, shoot number, root number, root length, dry, and fresh mass), and greater surviving rate under the R:B = 10:01 ratio among the treatments. The plantlets showed at least a threefold decrease in photosynthesis rate, as well as a significant abnormal stem elongation when grown under 100% R light. It is concluded that the RB ratio of 10:01 showed excellent performance in all growth parameters. This result has shown that the optimum lighting environment improves tomato plantlet cultures in vitro. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
