We analyze the Near Infrared ($\sim0.8-1\mu$m) rest-frame morphologies of galaxies with $\log M_*/M_\odot>9$ in the redshift range $010.5$) at $z\sim5$, and bulge-dominated galaxies also exist at these early epochs, confirming a rich and evolved morphological diversity of galaxies $\sim1$ Gyr after the Big Bang. We present a catalog of about 25,000 images of massive ($M_{\star} \ge 10^9 M_{\odot}$) galaxies at redshift $3 \leq z \leq 6$ from the TNG50 cosmological simulation, tailored for observations at multiple wavelengths carried out with JWST. The synthetic images were created with the SKIRT radiative transfer code, including the effects of dust attenuation and scattering. The noiseless images were processed with the mirage simulator to mimic the Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam) observational strategy (e.g., noise, dithering pattern, etc.) of the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) survey. In this paper, we analyze the predictions of the TNG50 simulation for the size evolution of galaxies at $3 \leq z \leq 6$ and the expectations for CEERS to probe that evolution. In particular, we investigate how sizes depend on wavelength, redshift, mass, and angular resolution of the images. We find that the effective radius accurately describes the three-dimensional half-mass radius of TNG50 galaxies. Sizes observed at 2~$\mu$m are consistent with those measured at 3.56~$\mu$m at all redshifts and masses. At all masses, the population of higher-$z$ galaxies is more compact than their lower-$z$ counterparts. However, the intrinsic sizes are smaller than the mock observed sizes for the most massive galaxies, especially at $z \lesssim 4$. This discrepancy between the mass and light distribution may point to a transition in the galaxy morphology at $z$=4-5, where massive compact systems start to develop more extended stellar structures., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ (20 pages, 12 figures). We take advantage of the NIRCam photometric observations available as part of the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science survey (CEERS) to identify and analyse very red sources in an effort to discover very dusty star forming galaxies. We select red galaxies as objects with a S/N>3 at 4.4 $μ$m and a S/N1.2 considering CEERS depths. This selection is ideal to identify very dusty (Av>1 mag) galaxies with stellar masses between $10^6$ to $10^{10}\, \rm M_{\odot}$ at z18 due to the Lyman absorption, independently of their dust extinction. Our sample of F200W-dropouts contains no strong candidates at z>6.5, instead it consists almost completely (~81%) of z1), but they are generally more massive $>10^{7.5}\rm M_{\odot}$., 30 pages, 1 table, 19 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Visual inspections of the first optical rest-frame images from JWST have indicated a surprisingly high fraction of disk galaxies at high redshifts. Here we alternatively apply self-supervised machine learning to explore the morphological diversity at $z \geq 3$. Our proposed data-driven representation scheme of galaxy morphologies, calibrated on mock images from the TNG50 simulation, is shown to be robust to noise and to correlate well with physical properties of the simulated galaxies, including their 3D structure. We apply the method simultaneously to F200W and F356W galaxy images of a mass-complete sample ($M_*/M_\odot>10^9$) at $z \geq 3$ from the first JWST/NIRCam CEERS data release. We find that the simulated and observed galaxies do not populate the same manifold in the representation space from contrastive learning, partly because the observed galaxies tend to be more compact and more elongated than the simulated galaxies. We also find that about half the galaxies that were visually classified as disks based on their elongated images actually populate a similar region of the representation space than spheroids, which according to the TNG50 simulation is occupied by objects with low stellar specific angular momentum and non-oblate structure. This suggests that the disk fraction at $z > 3$ as evaluated by visual classification may be severely overestimated by misclassifying compact, elongated galaxies as disks. Deeper imaging and/or spectroscopic follow-ups as well as comparisons with other simulations will help to unambiguously determine the true nature of these galaxies., 25 pages, 23 figures. Compact star formation appears to be generally common in dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs). However, its role in the framework set by the scaling relations in galaxy evolution remains to be understood. In this work we follow up on the galaxy sample from the GOODS-ALMA 2.0 survey, an ALMA blind survey at 1.1 mm covering a continuous area of 72.42 arcmin2 using two array configurations. We derived physical properties, such as star formation rates, gas fractions, depletion timescales, and dust temperatures for the galaxy sample built from the survey. There exists a subset of galaxies that exhibit starburst-like short depletion timescales, but they are located within the scatter of the so-called main sequence of SFGs. These are dubbed starbursts in the main sequence and display the most compact star formation and they are characterized by the shortest depletion timescales, lowest gas fractions, and highest dust temperatures of the galaxy sample, compared to typical SFGs at the same stellar mass and redshift. They are also very massive, accounting for ∼60% of the most massive galaxies in the sample (log(M*/M⊙) > 11.0). We find trends between the areas of the ongoing star formation regions and the derived physical properties for the sample, unveiling the role of compact star formation as a physical driver of these properties. Starbursts in the main sequence appear to be the extreme cases of these trends. We discuss possible scenarios of galaxy evolution to explain the results drawn from our galaxy sample. Our findings suggest that the star formation rate is sustained in SFGs by gas and star formation compression, keeping them within the main sequence even when their gas fractions are low and they are presumably on the way to quiescence.

Submillimeter/millimeter observations of dusty star-forming galaxies with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have shown that dust continuum emission generally occurs in compact regions smaller than the stellar distribution. However, it remains to be understood how systematic these findings are. Studies often lack homogeneity in the sample selection, target discontinuous areas with inhomogeneous sensitivities, and suffer from modest uv coverage coming from single array configurations. GOODS-ALMA is a 1.1 mm galaxy survey over a continuous area of 72.42 arcmin2 at a homogeneous sensitivity. In this version 2.0, we present a new low resolution dataset and its combination with the previous high resolution dataset from the survey, improving the uv coverage and sensitivity reaching an average of σ = 68.4 μJy beam−1. A total of 88 galaxies are detected in a blind search (compared to 35 in the high resolution dataset alone), 50% at S/Npeak ≥ 5 and 50% at 3.5 ≤ S/Npeak ≤ 5 aided by priors. Among them, 13 out of the 88 are optically dark or faint sources (H- or K-band dropouts). The sample dust continuum sizes at 1.1 mm are generally compact, with a median effective radius of Re = 0.″10 ± 0.″05 (a physical size of Re = 0.73 ± 0.29 kpc at the redshift of each source). Dust continuum sizes evolve with redshift and stellar mass resembling the trends of the stellar sizes measured at optical wavelengths, albeit a lower normalization compared to those of late-type galaxies. We conclude that for sources with flux densities S1.1 mm > 1 mJy, compact dust continuum emission at 1.1 mm prevails, and sizes as extended as typical star-forming stellar disks are rare. The S1.1 mm < 1 mJy sources appear slightly more extended at 1.1 mm, although they are still generally compact below the sizes of typical star-forming stellar disks.

International audience; VANDELS is an ESO Public Spectroscopic Survey designed to build a sample of high-signal-to-noise ratio, medium-resolution spectra of galaxies at redshifts between 1 and 6.5. Here we present the final Public Data Release of the VANDELS Survey, comprising 2087 redshift measurements. We provide a detailed description of sample selection, observations, and data reduction procedures. The final catalogue reaches a target selection completeness of 40% at i AB = 25. The high signal-to-noise ratio of the spectra (above 7 in 80% of the spectra) and the dispersion of 2.5 Å allowed us to measure redshifts with high precision, the redshift measurement success rate reaching almost 100%. Together with the redshift catalogue and the reduced spectra, we also provide optical mid-infrared photometry and physical parameters derived through fitting the spectral energy distribution. The observed galaxy sample comprises both passive and star forming galaxies covering a stellar mass range of 8.3 < Log( M * / M ⊙ ) < 11.7.

Understanding the process of quenching is one of the major open questions in galaxy evolution, and crucial insights may be obtained by studying quenched galaxies at high redshifts, at epochs when the Universe and the galaxies were younger and simpler to model. However, establishing the degree of quiescence in high redshift galaxies is a challenging task. One notable example is Hyde, a recently discovered galaxy at z=3.709. As compact (r~0.5 kpc) and massive (M*~1e11 Msun) as its quenched neighbor Jekyll, it is also extremely obscured yet only moderately luminous in the sub-millimeter. Panchromatic modeling suggested it could be the first galaxy found in transition to quenching at z>3, however the data were also consistent with a broad range of star-formation activity, including moderate SFR in the lower scatter of the galaxy main-sequence (MS). Here, we describe ALMA observations of the [CII] 157um and [NII] 205um far-infrared emission lines. The [CII] emission within the half-light radius is dominated by ionized gas, while the outskirts are dominated by PDRs or neutral gas. This suggests that the ionization in the center is not primarily powered by on-going star formation, and could come instead from remnant stellar populations formed in an older burst, or from a moderate AGN. Accounting for this information in the multi-wavelength modeling provides a tighter constraint on the star formation rate of SFR=$50^{+24}_{-18}$ Msun/yr. This rules out fully quenched solutions, and favors SFRs more than factor of two lower than expected for a galaxy on the MS, confirming the nature of Hyde as a transition galaxy. Theses results suggest that quenching happens from inside-out, and starts before the galaxy expels or consumes all its gas reservoirs. International audience; CIGALE is a powerful multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting code for extragalactic studies. However, the current version of CIGALE is not able to fit X-ray data, which often provide unique insights into AGN intrinsic power. We develop a new X-ray module for CIGALE, allowing it to fit SEDs from the X-ray to infrared (IR). We also improve the AGN fitting of CIGALE from UV-to-IR wavelengths. We implement a modern clumpy two-phase torus model, SKIRTOR. To account for moderately extincted type 1 AGNs, we implement polar-dust extinction. We publicly release the source code (named "X-CIGALE"). We test X-CIGALE with X-ray detected AGNs in SDSS, COSMOS, and AKARI-NEP. The fitting quality (as indicated by reduced χ 2) is good in general, indicating that X-CIGALE is capable of modelling the observed SED from X-ray to IR. We discuss constrainability and degeneracy of model parameters in the fitting of AKARI-NEP, for which excellent mid-IR photometric coverage is available. We also test fitting a sample of AKARI-NEP galaxies for which only X-ray upper limits are available from Chandra observations, and find that the upper limit can effectively constrain the AGN SED contribution for some systems. Finally, using X-CIGALE, we assess the ability of Athena to constrain the AGN activity in future extragalactic studies.; CIGALE est un code d'ajustement puissant pour la distribution d'énergie spectrale multi-longueur d'onde (SED) destiné aux études extragalactiques. VANDELS is a uniquely deep spectroscopic survey of high-redshift galaxies with the VIMOS spectrograph on ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). The survey has obtained ultradeep optical (0.48 < λ < 1.0 μm) spectroscopy of ≃2100 galaxies within the redshift interval 1.0 ≤ z ≤ 7.0, over a total area of ≃0.2 deg2 centred on the CANDELS Ultra Deep Survey and Chandra Deep Field South fields. Based on accurate photometric redshift pre-selection, 85 per cent of the galaxies targeted by VANDELS were selected to be at z ≥ 3. Exploiting the red sensitivity of the refurbished VIMOS spectrograph, the fundamental aim of the survey is to provide the high-signal-to-noise ratio spectra necessary to measure key physical properties such as stellar population ages, masses, metallicities, and outflow velocities from detailed absorption-line studies. Using integration times calculated to produce an approximately constant signal-to-noise ratio (20 < tint< 80 h), the VANDELS survey targeted: (a) bright star-forming galaxies at 2.4 ≤ z ≤ 5.5, (b) massive quiescent galaxies at 1.0 ≤ z ≤ 2.5, (c) fainter star-forming galaxies at 3.0 ≤ z ≤ 7.0, and (d) X-ray/Spitzer-selected active galactic nuclei and Herschel-detected galaxies. By targeting two extragalactic survey fields with superb multiwavelength imaging data, VANDELS will produce a unique legacy data set for exploring the physics underpinning high-redshift galaxy evolution. In this paper, we provide an overview of the VANDELS survey designed to support the science exploitation of the first ESO public data release, focusing on the scientific motivation, survey design, and target selection.

© ESO 2018. This paper describes the observations and the first data release (DR1) of the ESO public spectroscopic survey "VANDELS, a deep VIMOS survey of the CANDELS CDFS and UDS fields". The main targets of VANDELS are star-forming galaxies at redshift 2.4 < z < 5.5, an epoch when the Universe had not yet reached 20% of its current age, and massive passive galaxies in the range 1 < z < 2.5. By adopting a strategy of ultra-long exposure times, ranging from a minimum of 20 h to a maximum of 80 h per source, VANDELS is specifically designed to be the deepest-ever spectroscopic survey of the high-redshift Universe. Exploiting the red sensitivity of the refurbished VIMOS spectrograph, the survey is obtaining ultra-deep optical spectroscopy covering the wavelength range 4800-10 000 Å with a sufficiently high signal-to-noise ratio to investigate the astrophysics of high-redshift galaxy evolution via detailed absorption line studies of well-defined samples of high-redshift galaxies. VANDELS-DR1 is the release of all medium-resolution spectroscopic data obtained during the first season of observations, on a 0.2 square degree area centered around the CANDELS-CDFS (Chandra deep-field south) and CANDELS-UDS (ultra-deep survey) areas. It includes data for all galaxies for which the total (or half of the total) scheduled integration time was completed. The DR1 contains 879 individual objects, approximately half in each of the two fields, that have a measured redshift, with the highest reliable redshifts reaching zspec ∼ 6. In DR1 we include fully wavelength-calibrated and flux-calibrated 1D spectra, the associated error spectrum and sky spectrum, and the associated wavelength-calibrated 2D spectra. We also provide a catalog with the essential galaxy parameters, including spectroscopic redshifts and redshift quality flags measured by the collaboration. We present the survey layout and observations, the data reduction and redshift measurement procedure, and the general properties of the VANDELS-DR1 sample. In particular, we discuss the spectroscopic redshift distribution and the accuracy of the photometricredshifts for each individual target category, and we provide some examples of data products for the various target typesand the different quality flags. All VANDELS-DR1 data are publicly available and can be retrieved from the ESO archive. Two further data releases are foreseen in the next two years, and a final data release is currently scheduled for June 2020, which will include an improved rereduction of the entire spectroscopic data set.

We investigate the nature of a sample of 92 Spitzer/MIPS 24 micron selected galaxies in the CDFS, showing power law-like emission in the Spitzer/IRAC 3.6-8 micron bands. The main goal is to determine whether the galaxies not detected in X-rays (47% of the sample) are part of the hypothetical population of obscured AGN not detected even in deep X-ray surveys. The majority of the IR power-law galaxies are ULIRGs at z>1, and those with LIRG-like IR luminosities are usually detected in X-rays. The optical to IR spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the X-ray detected galaxies are almost equally divided between a BLAGN SED class (similar to an optically selected QSO) and a NLAGN SED (similar to the BLAGN SED but with an obscured UV/optical continuum). A small fraction of SEDs resemble warm ULIRG galaxies (e.g., Mrk231). Most galaxies not detected in X-rays have SEDs in the NLAGN+ULIRG class as they tend to be optically fainter, and possibly more obscured. Moreover, the IR power-law galaxies have SEDs significantly different from those of high-z (z_sp>1) IR (24 micron) selected and optically bright (VVDS I_AB, 43 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates within the FourStar Galaxy Evolution Survey (ZFOURGE) to determine the impact they have on star formation in their host galaxies. We first identify a population of radio, X-ray, and infrared-selected AGN by cross-matching the deep Ks-band imaging of ZFOURGE with overlapping multiwavelength data. From this, we construct a mass-complete (log(M∗/M⊙M∗/M⊙) ≥9.75), AGN luminosity limited sample of 235 AGN hosts over z = 0.2–3.2. We compare the rest-frame U − V versus V − J (UVJ) colours and specific star formation rates (sSFRs) of the AGN hosts to a mass-matched control sample of inactive (non-AGN) galaxies. UVJ diagnostics reveal AGN tend to be hosted in a lower fraction of quiescent galaxies and a higher fraction of dusty galaxies than the control sample. Using 160 μm Herschel PACS data, we find the mean specific star formation rate of AGN hosts to be elevated by 0.34 ± 0.07 dex with respect to the control sample across all redshifts. This offset is primarily driven by infrared-selected AGN, where the mean sSFR is found to be elevated by as much as a factor of ∼5. The remaining population, comprised predominantly of X-ray AGN hosts, is found mostly consistent with inactive galaxies, exhibiting only a marginal elevation. We discuss scenarios that may explain these findings and postulate that AGN are less likely to be a dominant mechanism for moderating galaxy growth via quenching than has previously been suggested.

Out of several dozen z > 7 candidate galaxies observed spectroscopically, only five have been confirmed via Lyman-alpha emission, at z=7.008, 7.045, 7.109, 7.213 and 7.215. The small fraction of confirmed galaxies may indicate that the neutral fraction in the intergalactic medium (IGM) rises quickly at z > 6.5, as Lyman-alpha is resonantly scattered by neutral gas. However, the small samples and limited depth of previous observations makes these conclusions tentative. Here we report the results of a deep near-infrared spectroscopic survey of 43 z > 6.5 galaxies. We detect only a single galaxy, confirming that some process is making Lyman-alpha difficult to detect. The detected emission line at 1.0343 um is likely to be Lyman-alpha emission, placing this galaxy at a redshift z = 7.51, an epoch 700 million years after the Big Bang. This galaxy's colors are consistent with significant metal content, implying that galaxies become enriched rapidly. We measure a surprisingly high star formation rate of 330 Msol/yr, more than a factor of 100 greater than seen in the Milky Way. Such a galaxy is unexpected in a survey of our size, suggesting that the early universe may harbor more intense sites of star-formation than expected., To be published in Nature on 24 October. International audience; The sample of high-redshift galaxies analyzed here consists of galaxies observed in the two Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) fields in the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Observations with the Herschel Space Observatory were obtained as part of the open time key program GOODS-Herschel (PI Elbaz), for a total time of 361.3h. PACS observations at 100 and 160um cover the whole GOODS-north field of 10'x16' and part of GOODS-south, i.e., 10'x10' (but reaching the largest depths over ~64arcmin^2). When considering the total observing times of 124h in GOODS-N and 206.3h in GOODS-S (including 2.6 and 5h of overheads), the PACS GOODS-Herschel observations reach a total integration time per sky position of 2.4h in GOODS-N and of 15.1h in GOODS-S, i.e., 6.3 times longer. Due to the larger beam size and observing configuration, the SPIRE observations of GOODS-N cover a field of 900 arcmin2, hence largely encompassing the central 10'x16', for a total observing time of 31.1h and an integration time per sky position of 16.8h. Large sets of objects with spectroscopic redshift measurements will be needed for imaging dark energy experiments to achieve their full potential, serving two goals:_training_, i.e., the use of objects with known redshift to develop and optimize photometric redshift algorithms; and_calibration_, i.e., the characterization of moments of redshift (or photo-z error) distributions. Better training makes cosmological constraints from a given experiment stronger, while highly-accurate calibration is needed for photo-z systematics not to dominate errors. In this white paper, we investigate the required scope of spectroscopic datasets which can serve both these purposes for ongoing and next-generation dark energy experiments, as well as the time required to obtain such data with instruments available in the next decade. Large time allocations on kilo-object spectrographs will be necessary, ideally augmented by infrared spectroscopy from space. Alternatively, precision calibrations could be obtained by measuring cross-correlation statistics using samples of bright objects from a large baryon acoustic oscillation experiment such as DESI. We present spectroscopic observations in the rest-frame optical and near- to mid-infrared wavelengths of four gravitationally lensed infrared (IR) luminous star-forming galaxies at redshift 1 < z < 3 from the LUCIFER instrument on the Large Binocular Telescope and the Infrared Spectrograph on Spitzer. The sample was selected to represent pure, actively star-forming systems, absent of active galactic nuclei. The large lensing magnifications result in high signal-to-noise spectra that can probe faint IR recombination lines, including Pa-alpha and Br-alpha at high redshifts. The sample was augmented by three lensed galaxies with similar suites of unpublished data and observations from the literature, resulting in the final sample of seven galaxies. We use the IR recombination lines in conjunction with H-alpha observations to probe the extinction, Av, of these systems, as well as testing star formation rate (SFR) indicators against the SFR measured by fitting spectral energy distributions to far-IR photometry. Our galaxies occupy a range of Av from ~0 to 5.9 mag, larger than previously known for a similar range of IR luminosities at these redshifts. Thus, estimates of SFR even at z ~ 2 must take careful count of extinction in the most IR luminous galaxies. We also measure extinction by comparing SFR estimates from optical emission lines with those from far-IR measurements. The comparison of results from these two independent methods indicates a large variety of dust distribution scenarios at 1 < z < 3. Without correcting for dust extinction, the H-alpha SFR indicator underestimates the SFR; the size of the necessary correction depends on the IR luminosity and dust distribution scenario. Individual SFR estimates based on the 6.2 micron PAH emission line luminosity do not show a systematic discrepancy with extinction, although a considerable, ~0.2 dex scatter is observed., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal; 14 pages, 8 figures

We present the Arizona CDFS Environment Survey (ACES), a recently-completed spectroscopic redshift survey of the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS) conducted using IMACS on the Magellan-Baade telescope. In total, the survey targeted 7277 unique sources down to a limiting magnitude of R = 24.1, yielding 5080 secure redshifts across the ~30' x 30' extended CDFS region. The ACES dataset delivers a significant increase to both the spatial coverage and the sampling density of the spectroscopic observations in the field. Combined with previously-published, spectroscopic redshifts, ACES now creates a highly-complete survey of the galaxy population at R < 23, enabling the local galaxy density (or environment) on relatively small scales (~1 Mpc) to be measured at z < 1 in one of the most heavily-studied and data-rich fields in the sky. Here, we describe the motivation, design, and implementation of the survey and present a preliminary redshift and environment catalog. We present radio and infrared (3.6-24um) counterparts to submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) detected in the Extended Chandra Deep Field South with the LABOCA 870-um bolometer camera on the 12-m Atacama Pathfinder Experiment. Using the Very Large Array at 1.4GHz and Spitzer we have identified secure counterparts to 79 of the 126 SMGs (SNR>3.7, S_870>4.4mJy) in the field, 62 via their radio and/or 24-um emission, the remainder using a colour-flux cut on IRAC 3.6- and 5.8-um sources chosen to maximise the number of secure, coincident radio and 24-um counterparts. In constructing our radio catalogue, we have corrected for the effects of `flux boosting', then used the corrected flux densities to estimate the redshifts of the SMGs based on the radio/submm spectral indices. The effect of the boosting correction is to increase the median redshift by 0.2 resulting in a value of z=2.2 (+0.7-0.8) (1-sigma errors) for the secure radio counterparts, in agreement with other studies, both spectroscopic and photometric., 25 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the details and early results from a deep near-infrared survey utilising the NICMOS instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope centred around massive M_* > 10^11 M_0 galaxies at 1.7 < z < 2.9 found within the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) fields. The GOODS NICMOS Survey (GNS) was designed to obtain deep F160W (H-band) imaging of 80 of these massive galaxies, as well as other colour selected objects such as Lyman-break drop-outs, BzK objects, Distant Red Galaxies, EROs, Spitzer Selected EROs, BX/BM galaxies, as well as sub-mm galaxies. We present in this paper details of the observations, our sample selection, as well as a description of features of the massive galaxies found within our survey fields. This includes: photometric redshifts, rest-frame colours, and stellar masses. We furthermore provide an analysis of the selection methods for finding massive galaxies at high redshifts, including colour selection, and how galaxy populations selected through different methods overlap. We find that a single colour selection method cannot locate all of the massive galaxies, with no one method finding more than 70 percent. We however find that the combination of these colour methods finds nearly all the massive galaxies, as selected by photometric redshifts with the exception of apparently rare blue massive galaxies. By investigating the rest-frame (U-B) vs. M_B diagram for these galaxies we furthermore show that there exists a bimodality in colour-magnitude space at z < 2, driven by stellar mass, such that the most massive galaxies are systematically red up to z~2.5, while lower mass galaxies tend to be blue. We also discuss the number densities for galaxies with stellar masses M_* > 10^11 M_0, whereby we find an increase of a factor of eight between z = 3 and z = 1.5, demonstrating that this is an epoch when massive galaxies establish most of their mass., Comment: MNRAS, submitted, 23 pages. We analyze a sample of galaxies chosen to have F_(24μm) > 0.5 mJy and satisfy a certain IRAC color criterion. Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) spectra yield redshifts, spectral types, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) luminosities, to which we add broadband photometry from optical through IRAC wavelengths, MIPS from 24-160 μm, 1.1 mm, and radio at 1.4 GHz. Stellar population modeling and IRS spectra together demonstrate that the double criteria used to select this sample have efficiently isolated massive star-forming galaxies at z ~ 1.9. This is the first starburst (SB)-dominated ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRG) sample at high redshift with total infrared luminosity measured directly from FIR and millimeter photometry, and as such gives us the first accurate view of broadband spectral energy distributions for SB galaxies at extremely high luminosity and at all wavelengths. Similar broadband data are assembled for three other galaxy samples—local SB galaxies, local active galactic nucleus (AGN)/ULIRGs, and a second 24 μm-luminous z ~ 2 sample dominated by AGN. L_(PAH)/L_(IR) for the new z ~ 2 SB sample is the highest ever seen, some three times higher than in local SBs, whereas in AGNs this ratio is depressed below the SB trend, often severely. Several pieces of evidence imply that AGNs exist in this SB-dominated sample, except two of which even host very strong AGN, while they still have very strong PAH emission. The Advanced Camera for Surveys images show that most objects have very extended morphologies in the rest-frame ultraviolet band, thus extended distribution of PAH molecules. Such an extended distribution prevents further destruction PAH molecules by central AGNs. We conclude that objects in this sample are ULIRGs powered mainly by SB; and the total infrared luminosity density contributed by this type of objects is 0.9-2.6 × 10^7 L_☉ Mpc^(–3).

Determining an accurate position for a submillimetre (submm) galaxy (SMG) is the crucial step that enables us to move from the basic properties of an SMG sample – source counts and 2D clustering – to an assessment of their detailed, multiwavelength properties, their contribution to the history of cosmic star formation and their links with present-day galaxy populations. In this paper, we identify robust radio and/or infrared (IR) counterparts, and hence accurate positions, for over two-thirds of the SCUBA HAlf-Degree Extragalactic Survey (SHADES) Source Catalogue, presenting optical, 24-μm and radio images of each SMG. Observed trends in identification rate have given no strong rationale for pruning the sample. Uncertainties in submm position are found to be consistent with theoretical expectations, with no evidence for significant additional sources of error. Employing the submm/radio redshift indicator, via a parametrization appropriate for radio-identified SMGs with spectroscopic redshifts, yields a median redshift of 2.8 for the radio-identified subset of SHADES, somewhat higher than the median spectroscopic redshift. We present a diagnostic colour–colour plot, exploiting Spitzer photometry, in which we identify regions commensurate with SMGs at very high redshift. Finally, we find that significantly more SMGs have multiple robust counterparts than would be expected by chance, indicative of physical associations. These multiple systems are most common amongst the brightest SMGs and are typically separated by 2–6 arcsec, ~15-50/(sin i) kpc at z∼ 2, consistent with early bursts seen in merger simulations.

We present XMM data for the supercluster A901/2, at z ~ 0.17, which is combined with deep imaging and 17-band photometric redshifts (from the COMBO-17 survey), 2dF spectra and Spitzer 24um data, to identify AGN in the supercluster. The 90ksec XMM image contains 139 point sources, of which 11 are identified as supercluster AGN with L_X(0.5-7.5keV) > 1.7x10^41 erg/cm2/s. The host galaxies have M_R < -20 and only 2 of 8 sources with spectra could have been identified as AGN by the detected optical emission lines. Using a large sample of 795 supercluster galaxies we define control samples of massive galaxies with no detected AGN. The local environments of the AGN and control samples differ at >98 per cent significance. The AGN host galaxies lie predominantly in areas of moderate projected galaxy density and with more local blue galaxies than the control sample, with the exception of one very bright Type I AGN very near the centre of a cluster. These environments are similar to, but not limited to, cluster outskirts and blue groups. Despite the large number of potential host galaxies, no AGN are found in regions with the highest galaxy density (excluding some cluster cores where emission from the ICM obscures moderate luminosity AGN). AGN are also absent from the areas with lowest galaxy density. We conclude that the prevalence of cluster AGN is linked to their environment., 20 pages, 15 figures. MNRAS accepted. We present Spitzer/IRS mid-infrared spectra for 15 gravitationally lensed, 24 micron--selected galaxies, and combine the results with 4 additional very faint galaxies with IRS spectra in the literature. The median intrinsic 24 micron flux density of the sample is 130 microJy, enabling a systematic survey of the spectral properties of the very faint 24 micron sources that dominate the number counts of Spitzer cosmological surveys. Six of the 19 galaxy spectra (32%) show the strong mid-IR continuua expected of AGN; X-ray detections confirm the presence of AGN in three of these cases, and reveal AGNs in two other galaxies. These results suggest that nuclear accretion may contribute more flux to faint 24 micron--selected samples than previously assumed. Almost all the spectra show some aromatic (PAH) emission features; the measured aromatic flux ratios do not show evolution from z=0. In particular, the high S/N mid-IR spectrum of SMM J163554.2+661225 agrees remarkably well with low--redshift, lower--luminosity templates. We compare the rest-frame 8 micron and total infrared luminosities of star--forming galaxies, and find that the behavior of this ratio with total IR luminosity has evolved modestly from z=2 to z=0. Since the high aromatic--to--continuum flux ratios in these galaxies rule out a dominant contribution by AGN, this finding implies systematic evolution in the structure and/or metallicity of infrared sources with redshift. It also has implications for the estimates of star forming rates inferred from 24 micron measurements, in the sense that at z ~2, a given observed frame 24 micron luminosity corresponds to a lower bolometric luminosity than would be inferred from low-redshift templates of similar luminosity at the corresponding rest wavelength., Accepted to the Astrophysical Journal. We analyze the spectral energy distribution (SED) of SDSS-selected quasars in the Spitzer First Look Survey area. Optical+IR colors allow for efficient selection of quasars. We construct a mean quasar SED that can be used to learn about accretion disks, disk-winds, and dusty tori. Future improvements in determining multiwavelength SEDs of different classes of quasars are needed to improve estimates of physical parameters of quasars such as bolometric luminosities and accretion rates.

We describe the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z ~ 3, using deep mid-infrared and optical observations of the extended Groth strip, obtained with IRAC and MIPS on board Spitzer and from the ground, respectively. We focus on LBGs with detections at all four IRAC bands, in particular the 26 galaxies with IRAC 8 μm band (rest-frame K-band) detections. We use stellar population-synthesis models and probe the stellar content of these galaxies. Based on best-fit continuous star formation models, we derive estimates of the stellar mass for these LBGs. As in previous studies, we find that a fraction of LBGs have very red colors and large estimated stellar masses (M_* > 5 × 10^(10) M_⊙); the current Spitzer data allow us, for the first time, to study these massive LBGs in detail. We discuss the link between these LBGs and submillimeter-luminous galaxies, and we find that the number density of these massive LBGs at high redshift is higher than predicted by current semianalytic models of galaxy evolution.
