The effect of feeding greater amberjack with copepod nauplii (Acartia tonsa) on the ontogeny of the digestive system was observed until 40 days after hatching (DAH). Copepods are part of the diet of fish larvae in nature, and they are rich in highly unsaturated fatty acids and free amino acids that enhance the digestive capacity of the fish. In a marine hatchery, four cylindroconical tanks of 2,700 L were stocked with about 150 × 103 greater amberjack larvae (Seriola dumerili) in each. The larvae were initially fed from 3 to 17 DAH in two tanks with copepod nauplii and rotifers (Brachionus sp.; Copepods group), while in the other two tanks, they were fed only with rotifers (Control group) during the same period. All the tanks were fed with rotifers (3–27 DAH), Artemia nauplii (12–22 DAH), enriched Artemia metanauplii (20–30 DAH), and formulated diet (25–40 DAH). Fish samples were taken regularly (every 2 or 4 days) for histological analysis and every day for the measurement of total length (TL). The TL was 3.7, 4.5 ± 0.1, 6.1, 11, 17.3 ± 0.1 and 20.3 ± 2.3 mm at 4, 10, 16, 22, 30, and 40 DAH, respectively. Copepod-fed fish showed higher TL in the last 2 days of the trial (p < 0.05), while mortality rates were lower in the beginning of the trial 10–17 DAH, (p < 0.05). In addition, copepods-fed fish had less skeletal deformities (p < 0.05). Pyloric caeca appeared earlier in the Copepods group compared with the Control, while the length and surface of the villi, the abundance of goblet cells/100 μm of intestine length, and the area covered with lipid vacuoles in the liver were significantly higher in the Copepods group (p < 0.05). This study investigated the impact of fertilization treatments on mature, forty-year-old, fully productive olive trees (Olea europaea L. cv. Koroneiki) in two non-irrigated orchards featuring contrasting soil types: non-calcareous–acidic and calcareous–alkaline. Over three years (2019–2021), seven distinct treatments were applied, involving inorganic soil fertilizers (traditional strategy) and foliar applications of a liquid organic product containing fulvic and humic acids. Fertilization significantly influenced physiological parameters, such as mineral nutrition, photosynthetic pigments of olive leaves, fruit yield, and oil production per tree, revealing noteworthy effects influenced by soil types and their interactions with treatments. Statistical analysis highlighted specific treatments, indicating that the foliar application of the organic product once a year in alkaline soil or biannually in acidic soil resulted in the highest observed fruit yield and oil production per tree. Indeed, contrary to the control–unfertilized trees, specific fertilization strategies resulted in an average increase of up to 47% and 73% in fruit yield per tree and up to 96% and 100% in oil production per tree in acidic and alkaline soil, respectively. Furthermore, consistently high yields were correlated with constant high values of the chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b ratio (2.3–3.3 in August for acidic soil) and leaf chlorophyll a concentration (55–66 mg/100 g f.w. in August for alkaline soil). This novel finding underscores the crucial role of these factors as prerequisites for achieving superior fruit production. Our results emphasize the potential of integrating foliar organic fertilization as a complementary strategy to traditional soil-based approaches. This is particularly relevant under non-irrigated/rainfed cultural conditions, emphasizing the significance of considering alternative fertilization practices for optimized olive orchard management. Within the framework of preserving and valorizing the rich grapevine germplasm of the Epirus region of Greece, indigenous grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) cultivars were characterized and assessed for their resilience to abiotic stresses in the context of climate change. The cultivars 'Debina' and 'Dichali' displayed significant differences in their response to drought stress as judged by morpho-physiological analysis, indicating higher drought tolerance for Dichali. Hence, they were selected for further study aiming to identify genetic and epigenetic mechanisms possibly regulating drought adaptability. Specifically, self-rooted and heterografted on 'Richter 110' rootstock plants were subjected to two phases of drought with a recovery period in between. Gene expression analysis was performed for two stress-related miRNAs and their target genes: (a) miRNA159 and putative targets, VvMYB101, VvGATA-26-like, VvTOPLESS-4-like and (b) miRNA156 and putative target gene VvCONSTANS-5. Overall, grafted plants exhibited a higher drought tolerance than self-rooted plants, suggesting beneficial rootstock–scion interactions. Comparative analysis revealed differential gene expression under repetitive drought stresses between the two cultivars as well as between the self-rooted and grafted plants. 'Dichali' exhibited an up-regulation of most of the genes examined, which may be associated with increased tolerance. Nevertheless, the profound down-regulation of VvTOPLESS-4-like (a transcriptional co-repressor of transcription factors) upon drought and the concomitant up-regulation of miRNA159 highlights the importance of this 'miRNA-target' module in drought responsiveness. DNA methylation profiling using MSAP analysis revealed differential methylation patterns between the two genotypes in response to drought. Further investigations of gene expression and DNA methylation will contribute to our understanding of the epigenetic mechanisms underlying grapevine tolerance to drought stress. (1) Background: This study investigates the effects of potassium (K) and rootstock on the growth, photosynthetic activity, and mineral nutrition of lemon trees; (2) Methods: Lemon trees (cv. Adamopoulou) grafted onto sour orange (Citrus aurantium) (SO) or Volkamer lemon (Citrus volkameriana) (VL) rootstock were cultivated hydroponically under 0.00, 0.75, 1.50, 3.00, and 6.00 mM K. Plant growth and nutrition parameters, as well as leaf photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, intracellular CO2, chlorophyll, and carotenoid concentration were assessed; (3) Results: Under K deficiency (0 mM K), plants exhibited chlorotic and necrotic symptoms, more pronounced in older leaves. Potassium deficiency adversely affected various physiological processes in lemon leaves, including a decrease in photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, intercellular CO2 concentration, water use efficiency, CO2 utilization efficiency, chlorophyll a/b ratio, and carotenoid concentrations (some effects were rootstock-dependent). Low photosynthetic rates under K deficiency were due to both stomatal- and non-stomatal limitations. Elevated K in the nutrient solution consistently reduced the total plant uptake of P, Ca, Mg, B, Mn, and Zn, resulting in nutrient imbalances, as evidenced by the significant decrease in P, Ca, Mg, and Zn concentrations found in scion tissues (especially at the 6 mM K treatment). Rootstock-dependent responses were also observed in scion leaf and stem growth and in mineral nutrient concentrations, uptake, and distribution across plant parts; (4) Conclusions: Our study reveals interesting aspects on how to optimize K fertilization in lemon trees in the context of sustainable agriculture by considering nutrient interactions and rootstock-dependent effects. Magnesium is an essential nutrient for the growth and development of plants. Its deficiency is becoming a growing concern in many citrus orchards worldwide, adversely affecting numerous functions in plants and limiting their productivity and quality. Three-year-old orange (Citrus sinensis cv. Newhall) plants grafted on Swingle citrumelo (C. paradisi Macf. × Poncirus trifoliata L.) rootstock were irrigated for 63 days with nutrient solutions containing 0, 12, 24, 48, 96, and 192 mg Mg L−1. Thereafter, Mg deficiency-induced changes were investigated in leaf chlorophyll concentration and fluorescence, and in proline and carbohydrate concentration in leaves and roots, as well as in the nutritional status of leaves, stems, and roots. Magnesium concentration in the nutrient solution was positively correlated with the concentration of Mg (leaves, stems, roots), Ca (rootstock's stem), K (roots), and Fe (leaves, rootstock's stem), as well as with the total Mg absorption. However, Mg concentration in the nutrient solution was negatively correlated with the concentration of Mn (rootstock's stem, roots), Ca (leaves, scion's stems, roots), and Fe (roots), as well as with the total absorption of Mn, Fe, P, K, and Ca. The lower values of the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were observed by the effect of the highest concentration of Mg. As far as leaf chlorophyll concentration and carbohydrate and proline content of leaves and roots, they were not affected by the Mg treatments. Concluding, this research highlights the significance of Mg management in citrus farming, offering insights into increasing Mg concentrations, understanding root mechanisms in Mg absorption, and suggesting the benefits of fertilization to address Mg deficiency. It emphasizes the importance of careful Mg fertilizer dosages, considering other nutrient interactions, and provides valuable guidance for optimizing Mg nutrition and overall nutrient management in sweet orange trees. The recent energy crisis has increased the cost of fertilization for olive growers. This is why alternative nutrient sources, such as manures and other organic materials, could be used to sustain olive production within the framework of sustainable agriculture, by decreasing chemical fertilization inputs. A greenhouse pot experiment was established with a marl soil substrate that was modified with three amendments (sheep manure, or SM; litter from evergreen broadleaf species, or EBLS, such as Quercus sp.; their combination, i.e., SM + EBLS) and a control soil (no application of amendments) to investigate their influence on the nutrition, physiology, and leaf sugar concentrations of olive plants. Plant growth was not significantly affected by the amendments, while the lowest leaf N, K, and Zn concentrations were determined in the control soil. Significantly higher photosynthetic rate was determined in the SM + EBLS, compared to SM. Significantly higher intercellular CO2 was found in the EBLS and SM + EBLS, while significantly higher intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) was found in the SM + EBLS and the control. Significantly higher translocated sugar content was recorded in the SM + EBLS compared to the control. Overall, it was concluded that the optimum treatment was SM + EBLS, i.e., the combinational application of SM and EBLS. However, multi-year research under field conditions is necessary to draw more stable conclusions about the beneficial role of organic amendments on the nutrition and physiology of olive trees. The application of nutrient solutions to the foliage of plants is an alternative means to fertilise crops. Foliar fertilisation is used to overcome the disadvantages of soil applications. Variable plant responses to these foliar fertilisation spray solutions have often been described in the literature. However, knowledge about the penetration mechanisms, the role of a leaf-applied inorganic or organic solution, and the results obtained by its application is still limited. The complex character of the factors determining the effects of sprays hinders the development of suitable foliar fertilisation strategies, applicable under variable local conditions and for various plant types. This review describes some basic factors involved in the penetration process of foliar sprays in olive (Olea europaea L.) trees. Chemistry, leaf penetration, and plant nutrition principles will be merged with the aim of clarifying the constraints, opportunities, and future perspectives of sprays to cure olive tree nutrient deficiencies and, hence, both increase the yield and improve the fruit quality. Environmental effects and, particularly, temperature changes have been demonstrated to influence the activity, function, and well-being of teleosts. Temperature may change seasonally in the wild, and in captivity under aquaculture operations. Moreover, climate change is expected to shift temperature profiles worldwide. MicroRNAs (miRNA) are important temperature-sensitive gene-expression regulators acting at the post-transcriptional level. They are known to be key regulators in development, reproduction, and immune responses. Therefore, early larval development of the European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax), one of the most extensively cultured species in Mediterranean aquaculture, was investigated at early rearing temperatures, i.e., 15, 17.5, and 20 °C, in regard to the impact of temperatures on miRNAs through sncRNA high-throughput sequencing but also at the phenotypic level in terms of growth, sex, vision, and skeletal deformities. Expression profiling revealed stage- and temperature-specific miRNA expression targeting genes with roles in reproduction and immune response mainly at the flexion and all-fins stages. Similar stage- and temperature-specific results were also observed concerning the number of rod cells and lower jaw elongation. The present work presents for the first time highly promising results on the influence of early rearing temperature at the post-transcriptional level during European sea bass development, with a putative impact on reproduction and immune response, as well as regarding teleost vision and larval development. The market for avocado is one of the fastest expanding worldwide, inclduing the Mediterranean basin. Organic farming systems cannot make use of synthetic fertilizers and therefore rely on several cultural techniques to maintain vigorous young trees and for quick shoot development, satisfactory yield, and fruit quality. We studied the effect of three different organic products (Terra Insecta® (Aeiphoria-Sustainable products of Crete, Chania, Greece), Fruit-Fix®, and AMINO-16® (both products manufactured by EVYP, Sindos, Thessaloniki, Greece) on avocado plants in the cool subtropical area of southern Greece. Three experiments were carried out, two of them on young avocado trees, and the third one on mature, fully productive trees. The establishment success (ES) (%), plants with shoot induction (SI) (%), plants with shoot growth ≥ 3 cm (SG) (%), number of sprouted buds ≥3 cm per plant (SB), mean shoot length (cm) per plant (SL), total shoot length (cm) per plant (TSL), mean leaf number per plant (LN), and total leaf number per plant (TLN) were measured in the first and second experiments, while in the third experiment, fruit growth parameters (length, width, fruit weight, fruit weight increase (FWI)) and fruit quality parameters (dry matter, oil concentration, dry matter, and oil concentration increase) were measured. The application of 0.2 K of Terra Insecta® to the planting hole did not have any statistically significant effect on plant growth, but when added around the trunk, statistically higher values were observed for SB, SL, LN, TSL, and TLN in the Terra Insecta® treatment compared to the control. Fruit-Fix® application to Lamb Hass avocado trees resulted in significant differences in ES, SI, SG, SL, TSL, LN, and TLN, and in the Hass variety, in SB. In the AMINO-16® experiment, the fruit dimensions, quality parameters, and yield of the Hass variety were not recorded as significantly different. However, in the Fuerte variety, FW increased by 119.3% in the AMINO-16® treatment. The effect of the organic fertilizers used in this research showed noticeable results requiring studies to be carried out over more seasons, different tree ages, cultivation methods, and stress conditions.
