Abstract

The evolution and internal structure of Mars are, by comparison to its present-day surface, poorly known--although evidence of recent volcanic activity.sup.1 suggests that its deep interior remains hot and convectively cooling. The cooling rate of Mars is related to its early thermal state and to its rheology, which determines its ability to deform and to dynamically evolve.sup.2. Attempts to reconstruct the dynamic history of Mars and reveal its present-day structure, by combining the study of thermal evolution with surface observations, are limited by the interplay between several key quantities--including temperature, composition and rheology. Here we show that by considering Phobos (the closest satellite of Mars)--the orbital evolution of which is governed by the thermochemical history of Mars, through tidal interactions--we can gain insight into the thermal history and rheology of the planet. We investigated the long-term evolution of the main envelopes of Mars; these comprise a liquid metallic core that is overlain by a homogeneous silicate convecting mantle underneath an evolving heterogeneous lithospheric lid that includes a crust enriched in radiogenic elements. By exploiting the relationship between Mars and Phobos within an established in situ scenario for the early origin of the moons of Mars.sup.3, we find that--initially--Mars was moderately hotter (100 to 200 kelvin) than it is today, and that its mantle sluggishly deforms in the dislocation creep regime. This corresponds to a reference viscosity of 10.sup.22.2 [plus or minus] 0.5 pascal seconds and to a moderate to relatively weak intrinsic sensitivity of viscosity to temperature and pressure. Our approach predicts a present-day average crustal thickness of 40 [plus or minus] 25 kilometres and a surface heat flow of 20 [plus or minus] 1 milliwatts per square metre. We show that combining these predictions with data from future and ongoing space missions--such as InSight--could reduce uncertainties in Martian thermal and rheological histories, and help to uncover the origin of Phobos. Abstract

We report observations of Rayleigh waves that orbit around Mars up to three times following the S1222a marsquake. Averaging these signals, we find the largest amplitude signals at 30 and 85 s central period, propagating with distinctly different group velocities of 2.9 and 3.8 km/s, respectively. The group velocities constraining the average crustal thickness beneath the great circle path rule out the majority of previous crustal models of Mars that have a >200 kg/m(3) density contrast across the equatorial dichotomy between northern lowlands and southern highlands. We find that the thickness of the Martian crust is 42-56 km on average, and thus thicker than the crusts of the Earth and Moon. Considered with the context of thermal evolution models, a thick Martian crust suggests that the crust must contain 50%-70% of the total heat production to explain present-day local melt zones in the interior of Mars., Geophysical Research Letters, 50 (12), ISSN:0094-8276, ISSN:1944-8007

Abstract

NASA’s InSight has detected a large magnitude seismic event, labelled S1222a. The event has a moment magnitude of M(Ma)(W)4.7, with 5 times more seismic moment compared to the second largest even. The event is so large that features are clearly observed that were not seen in any previously detected events. In addition to body phases and Rayleigh waves, we also see Love waves, minor arc surface wave overtones, and multi-orbit surface waves. At long periods, the coda event exceeds 10 hours. The event locates close to the North-South dichotomy and outside the tectonically active Cerberus Fossae region. S1222a does not show any evident geological or tectonic features. The event is extremely rich in frequency content, extending from below 1/30 Hz up to 35 Hz. Abstract

For the first time, from early 2019 to the end of 2022, Mars' shallow and deep interiors have been explored by seismology with the InSight mission. Thanks to the performances of its seismometers and the quality of their robotic installation on the ground, 1,319 seismic events have been detected, including about 90 marsquakes at teleseismic distances, withMw from 2.5 to 4.7 and at least 6 impacts, the largest ones with craters larger than 130 m. A large fraction of these marsquakes occur in Cerberus Fossae, demonstrating active regional tectonics. Records of pressure-induced seismic noise and signals from the penetration of a heat flow probe have provided subsurface models below the lander. Abstract

Convective vortices (whirlwinds) and dust devils (dust‐loaded vortices) are one of the most common phenomena on Mars. They reflect the local thermodynamical structure of the atmosphere and are the driving force of the dust cycle. Additionally, they cause an elastic ground deformation, which is useful for retrieving the subsurface rigidity. Therefore, investigating convective vortices with the right instrumentation can lead to a better understanding of the Martian atmospheric structures as well as the subsurface physical properties. In this study, we quantitatively characterized the convective vortices detected by NASA's InSight (∼13,000 events) using meteorological (e.g., pressure, wind speed, temperature) and seismic data. The evaluated parameters, such as the signal‐to‐noise ratio, event duration, asymmetricity of pressure drop profiles, and cross‐correlation between seismic and pressure signals, are compiled as a catalog. Using these parameters, we investigated (a) the vortex structure and (b) the subsurface physical properties. Regarding the first topic, we tried to illustrate the vertical vortex structure and its link to the shape of the pressure profiles by combining the asymmetrical features seen in the observed pressure drops and the terrestrial observations of dust devils. Our results indicate that most of the vortices move with the wall tilted in the advection direction. Concerning the second topic, selecting the highly correlated events between pressure perturbation and ground response, we estimated the subsurface rigidity at the InSight landing site down to 100 m depth. Our results indicate that the subsurface structure can be modeled with two layers having a transition at 5–15 m depth. Plain Language Summary: As frequently observed on Earth, convective vortices or dust‐loaded vortices are also seen on Mars. They reflect the local atmospheric structure and are the main driving force to lift the fine dust from the ground. In 2018, NASA's InSight succeeded in installing the meteorological and geophysical packages on Mars. That brought us, in particular, meteorological data with an extremely high temporal resolution, contributing to resolving local phenomena such as convective vortices. In this study, using InSight's meteorological (e.g., pressure, air temperature) and seismic data, we quantitatively characterize convective vortices to understand this phenomenon from both meteorological and geophysical aspects. Especially focusing on the asymmetricity of pressure drop profiles at vortex encounters and the correlation between the pressure variations and seismic signals, we investigated (a) a link between the shape of pressure drop profiles and the vertical vortex structure and (b) the ground rigidity structure by measuring the ground responses against the vortex‐related pressure variations. Consequently, first, we found that most of the vortices move with the wall tilted in the advection direction.
