It is critical to provide consumers with safe drinking water to protect public health. Water is the most precious chemical on the planet, and it is essential for people and all other living things (Batool et al., 2018). Unfortunatly, world's freshwater supply appears to be in poor conditions. Furthermore, human abuse of freshwater in the form of pollution is directly linked to the global lack of freshwater (Khan et al., 2005). Water is used for many purposes, including consuming, showering, and cleaning, and it must be free of harmful toxins for human and marine life to be healthy. Spring water is unique from surface water. Spring water is normally regarded as safe to consume. All life, including human beings, depending on their terrain for their well-being and survival, yet the ecosystem has deteriorated owing to the exploitation of natural resources. Water is the most important of these essential resources (A. Ali et al., 2012). The natural resource for humans, flora, fauna and the environment as a whole is water. The quality of ambient water is determined through an assessment. Surface and groundwater are heavily polluted as a result of anthropogenic activities. Although surface water is heavily used in industrial processes, it is also crucial in agriculture, as well as in homes and municipal services (Ahmed et al., 2015). As pure water is in high demand, it can be obtained from a variety of sources, but Unfortunately, surface waters are frequently at risk of becoming polluted. Their poor quality causes public health problems. The evaluation of water treatment productivity uses a wide range of microbiological, chemical and physical indicators to assess drinking water quality. Targeted amplicon sequencing, on the other hand, can be used to analyses entire microbial populations quickly and affordably (Shaw et al., 2015). The fundamental goal of this study is to use the 16s rRNA metagenomic technique to offer a comprehensive metagenomic study of the bacterial communities found in different water reservoirs of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. With the exception of Myanmar, Cambodia has the lowest access to piped water supply in the South East Asia region, which was estimated to be 21 percent in 2015. Less than one in ten rural households (7 percent) have access to piped water services on their premises, while for urban households, three out of four households enjoy these services (75 percent) (WHO and UNICEF, 2015). Against this backdrop, the Government of Cambodia in its National Strategic Development Plan 2014-2018 (Royal Government of Cambodia, 2013) prioritizes the acceleration of access to piped water services, in partnership with the domestic private sector. Private water operators are licensed and regulated by the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft (MIH). Scarce public domestic financial resources are solely channeled to state-owned utilities and enforcement of regulations is generally weak. With the exception of the French Development Agency (AFD), most development partners focus their grant and lending support on public utility investments. In 2012 the private sector is already estimated to provide 1.4 million Cambodians with piped water services, with the immediate potential for expansion of existing schemes covering another 2 million and further new schemes that could viably be developed for another 3 million Cambodians (Sy, Warner, & Jamieson, 2014) and ( (DFAT, 2014). Around 300 private sector utilities, around half of which are licensed by the Ministry of Industry and Handicraft (MIH), have a market share of almost 50 percent of those with access to piped services, mostly situated in rural towns and agglomerations of settlements, with 750 to over 3000 household connections. Driven by demand for higher services, the private sector in Cambodia will be an important driver for increasing access to piped water supply, especially in the rapidly urbanizing rural growth centers of Cambodia.

Humans may acquire infection from potable water., Mycobacterium lentiflavum, a slow-growing nontuberculous mycobacterium, is a rare cause of human disease. It has been isolated from environmental samples worldwide. To assess the clinical significance of M. lentiflavum isolates reported to the Queensland Tuberculosis Control Centre, Australia, during 2001–2008, we explored the genotypic similarity and geographic relationship between isolates from humans and potable water in the Brisbane metropolitan area. A total of 47 isolates from 36 patients were reported; 4 patients had clinically significant disease. M. lentiflavum was cultured from 13 of 206 drinking water sites. These sites overlapped geographically with home addresses of the patients who had clinically significant disease. Automated repetitive sequence–based PCR genotyping showed a dominant environmental clone closely related to clinical strains. This finding suggests potable water as a possible source of M. lentiflavum infection in humans.

This paper is organized into three main sections. Section one presents the background, objectives, scope, and limitations of the study. It also provides a general definition of OM and presents prototypical OM arrangements for rural CDD and community-based subprojects. Section two presents the detailed case studies for the seven selected projects. Section three summarizes the conclusions from the review and recommends steps for moving ahead. Five annexes provide extra background information, including the complete list of projects from which the seven main case studies were selected, as well as: examples of maintenance requirements for rural infrastructure; considerations for task teams planning for OM design and implementation; sample OM measures and timelines; and links to OM materials.

To evaluate and reflect the sustainability of services in the region, an overall sector sustainability assessment was done, taking into account four main dimensions: access to services, quality of services, efficiency of services, and financing of services. Each of these dimensions is measured through three simple and objective indicators. For each indicator, best practice values are established by looking at the best performers in the region, and countries closest to those best performers are deemed to have a more mature sector. A more complete description of the methodology to assess the sector sustainability is included in the Annex of the State of the Sector Regional Report from the Danube Water Program. The outcomes of this assessment for the Moldova water sector are presented, which also shows average and best practices in the Danube region. The Moldova sector sustainability score is 50, which is below the Danube average of 64, and is among the lowest scores in the region. The assessment shows that, on average, the country performs well in terms of collection ratio, nonrevenue water, and continuity of service. The main deficiencies of the Moldova water sector identified through the sector sustainability assessment are access to piped water and flush toilets, affordability, and investment level.

This document aims to share lessons learned from the implementation of the World Bank financed component of the rural water supply and sanitation project (EPAR) in the Sud region after its final evaluation. Leading the reform of the drinking water and sanitation sector in Haiti, the EPAR of the National Directorate of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA) involved the construction or rehabilitation of drinking water schemes in small towns with fewer than 10,000 inhabitants in the Sud region. As a result of the project, there will be a real and sustainable increase in the water supply to Haiti’s populations of benefitting communities of the Sud region, thus providing improved access for most households. A long-term solution must be implemented in order to make the meters more affordable to the operators and thus enable them to continue expanding their customer base.

Includes bibliographical references (pages 247-288) Water is a basic human need, but the cost of supplying potable water is escalating due to increasing abstraction of fresh water, drier weather, rising contamination levels in rivers and groundwater, increasingly stringent legislation, and ageing infrastructure. Many communities are unable to afford all of these costs, and must prioritise their importance. Despite the large literature on investment appraisal, there is limited guidance on how to compare these various investment needs across multiple sectors (e.g., health, environment) using a common metric. In order to ensure the most important impacts are considered for multiple types of potable water supply system (PWSS) investments, a novel approach is used to identify and prioritise a wide set of attributes based on systems thinking . In this approach, the most prominent impacts of PWSS investments are identified according to the number of causal factors that influence them (e.g., risk of illness is influenced by upstream runoff from the land, the level of treatment provided, and many other things), and the importance of these impacts is tested by monetising them based on residential consumers’ stated and revealed preferences. One of the primary goals of public investments is to increase net benefits to society, yet many of the impacts of PWSS investments have not yet been monetised.

The constraints that have been experienced in recent years with the Delmas water supply have largely been as a result of it being situated in a dolomite area, the environmental reality which, from a human and economic standpoint, seems to be a definite drawback. Previous reports on diarrhoea outbreaks in the Delmas area (1993, 2005 and 2007) have consistently noted a groundwater contamination of the A well field’s groundwater abstraction boreholes. While water contamination certainly had a role to play in the diarrhoea outbreaks, there were other contributing environmental factors. Amongst these were the physical environment has been severely polluted and significant interventions in environmental elements, such as local surface water streams, that were recorded during the research process. The nature and extent of water (raw, potable and waste) management in and by the Delmas Local Municipality will be the focus of this article, and certain significant geohydrological issues to consider in the achievement of effective municipal governance will be debated. Recommendations on the possible improvement of the municipal water services management in and by the Municipality will form part of the debate and may serve as pointers for improving the governance, by local governments, of the geohydrological realities that cause constraints in their various areas of responsibility. The involvement of the rural private sector in water supply in Cambodia is unique to the country. The presence of this private sector allows other entities to respond to new demands from people living in the larger villages for household water supply, which the State is not yet able to address. These entrepreneurs operate on a merchant basis, lacking an institutional structure which is still being created. Their business is most often based on pushcart delivering water barrels at the house of villagers or more recently on small piped networks usually distributing raw surface water. Service is rough; the water quality is uncertain, but the users are satisfied with this service, because for them, it constitutes another alternative to the already considerable choice of water supplies available-ponds, wells, boreholes, and rivers. Their demands focus more on a practical objective (a supply in the household) than on a sanitary one, even if surveys show that villagers have a good understanding of health risks associated with water. Through the implementation of 14 small scale water supply systems, the goal was to enhance a qualitative improvement of the water service in some Cambodian small towns through the transformation of rough and informal merchant services to a basic water service supplying drinking water to an extended population under a formal institutional arrangement. The MIREP (Mini Reseaux d'Eau Potable - Small Scale Piped Water Supply System) program, launched in 2001 to transform these very basic initiatives into basic services, began as a pilot project supporting one entrepreneur in the implementation of a small piped water system. In order to move forward, the MIREP program made a choice, in particular linked to its proximity to the Ministry of rural development, to assist the nascent involvement of communes in decentralization, to strengthen provincial power through the process of decentralization, and to respect the cultural heritage of those who devised and financed the project.

Triggered by the Kyoto Protocol and by the aggravation of freshwater scarcity, environmental impacts should soon become key decision criteria for the planning of potable water supply projects, especially when advanced systems such as seawater desalination are at stake. In order to foster the transition of the water industry towards sustainable practices, the present work proposes an integrated design approach dedicated to potable water supply that targets both economic and environmental objectives. At first, the current industrial practices (Chapter I) and the technical characteristics of potable water supply systems (Chapter II) are analyzed via the modeling of the process units used for potable water supply: pumping systems, conventional water treatment processes (e.g. clarification, filtration, disinfection) and advanced water treatment processes (e.g. membrane processes, thermal processes). Using the ISO 14040 standardized Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method, Chapter III presents the development of a performance indicator that assesses the environmental impacts generated through all stages of the life cycle of potable water supply (i.e. from "cradle to grave"): from the construction of the potable water treatment plant, to its operation and decommissioning. This LCA-based indicator provides a holistic overview of all potential environmental impacts (e.g. green house gases (GHG) emissions, impacts on ecosystems and on human health). It allows to stress out the impact sources and the penalizing steps within potable water supply (Chapter IV): The production of electricity and chemicals required by the potable water treatment plant is highlighted to generate respectively 75% and 15% of the total impacts generated during the life cycle of potable water supply. Different potable water supply scenarios (e.g. potable water supply from ground water, from surface water, seawater desalination, water import from distant water resources) are benchmarked, in order to identify the best solutions as a function of the local context (e.g. type of electricity supply, topographic conditions, feed water quality). Based on the results of the environmental assessment, Chapter V proposes measures for the improvement of the industrial practices of the water sector, targeting energy and chemicals management, electricity sourcing and effluent disposal. Within the same perspective, Chapter VI details an optimization method for the design of the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane process, i.e. the key treatment process for desalination and wastewater reclamation. This method systematically synthesizes RO process configurations and evaluates their performances on economical (total annualized costs), technical (energy requirement, water conversion rate) and environmental criteria (GHG emissions). Evolutionary algorithms are then used to optimize the design of these configurations (process layout and operating conditions) and to identify those featuring the best trade-offs between economical costs and environmental impacts. As case study, the optimization method is applied on a brackish water reverse osmosis (BWRO) desalination project. The characteristics of the optimal BWRO process configurations are calculated as a function of the project constraints (e.g. economical and technical settings, minimum potable water quality), in order to illustrate how this method may support process engineers for the design of desalination plants.
