Stigma is one of the main barriers to prevention, treatment and recovery from mental illness. However, bibliometric studies in this area are still scarce. Therefore, our aim was to quantify and analyze the scientific literature on the stigma of nursing students and professionals towards mental disorders. To this purpose, bibliometric indicators of scientific production, impact and collaboration were used. Among our results, it stands out that only 14.3% of the total number of studies analyzed measure the efficacy of the interventions carried out to reduce stigma. Furthermore, with exceptions such as Happell B and Byrne L, collaborations between authors and institutions are limited. “Service user involvement” appeared as a prominent keyword in 2018, coinciding with the increase in publications on the effectiveness of interventions. Interventions based on the involvement of people with psychiatric diagnoses in the design of nursing curricula seem to become a promising line of research. More studies measuring the efficacy of such interventions are needed. Knowledge of the lines of research that are being developed and of the researchers and institutions involved can contribute to creating synergy between the different researchers and to continue adding projects to the existing ones, thus contributing to the generation of more robust results that show the most indicated interventions to reduce the still present stigma and improve care for people with psychiatric diagnoses. This study aimed to analyze the psychological affectation of health professionals (HPs) of Spanish Emergency Medical Services (EMSs) according to the cumulative incidence (CI) of COVID19 cases in the regions in which they worked. A cross-sectional descriptive study was designed, including all HPs working in any EMS of the Spanish geography between 1 February 2021 and 30 April 2021. Their level of stress, anxiety and depression (DASS-21) and the perception of self-efficacy (GSES) were the study’s main results. A 2-factor analysis of covariance was used to determine if the CI regions of COVID-19 cases determined the psychological impact on each of the studied variables. A total of 1710 HPs were included. A third presented psychological impairment classified as severe. The interaction of CI regions with the studied variables did not influence their levels of stress, anxiety, depression or self-efficacy. Women, younger HPs or those with less EMS work experience, emergency medical technicians (EMT), workers who had to modify their working conditions or those who lived with minors or dependents suffered a greater impact from the COVID-19 pandemic in certain regions. These HPs have shown high levels of stress, anxiety, depression and medium levels of self-efficacy, with similar data in the different geographical areas. Objective: To analyze the characteristics and challenges experienced by formal caregivers of dependent elderly at home. Methods: Multicenter qualitative study, conducted in six Brazilian cities, with formal caregivers of dependent elderly people. The interviews were conducted using a semi-structured guide, at their homes, from May to August 2019, lasting an average of 60 minutes. Results: Participants were 27 formal caregivers with a mean age of 46 years, predominantly female, with mean care time for the elderly of two years and six months, without professional training of caregivers. The analysis and interpretation of the statements led to the formulation of three thematic categories: Working and health conditions of the formal caregiver; Profile and ways of caring; and Care challenges. Final thoughts: There is need to know the characteristics and demands of formal caregivers of dependent elderly people domiciled for the development of public policies and effective interventions, taking into account the needs presented by these professionals. O objetivo deste artigo é analisar as características e os desafios vivenciados pelos cuidadores formais de idosos dependentes no domicílio. Estudo qualitativo multicêntrico, realizado em 6 cidades brasileiras, com cuidadores formais de idosos dependentes. As entrevistas foram realizadas mediante utilização de um roteiro semiestruturado, no domicílio, nos meses de maio a agosto de 2019, com duração média de 60 minutos. Background Healthcare workers (HCWs) are especially vulnerable to infection by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Aim The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) among HCWs from February 24th to April 30th, 2020, in a hospital in Madrid, Spain. Methods This was a retrospective cohort study. Cumulative COVID-19 incidence was calculated for all HCWs and categorized according to presumed level of COVID-19 exposure (high, medium, and low). Findings Among 1911 HCWs, 213 (11.1%) had COVID-19 during the study period. Cases increased gradually from March 8th, peaking on March 17th and declining thereafter. The peak of cases among HCWs was reached 14 days before the peak in admitted COVID-19 cases in the hospital. There were no significant differences in the proportion of COVID-19 cases according to level of occupational exposure (P = 0.123). There were five departments and two professions in which >20% of the workers had confirmed COVID-19. Temporal clusters were identified in three of these departments and one profession, with most of the cases occurring over a period of less than five days. The prevalence of comorbidities was low and 91.5% of patients had mild or moderate symptoms. Eleven patients were admitted to the hospital and one patient needed intensive care. None of the patients died. The median time of sick leave was 20 (interquartile range: 15–26) days. Conclusion The results suggest that HCW–HCW transmission accounted for part of the cases. In spite of a low prevalence of comorbidities and a mild clinical course in most cases, COVID-19 caused long periods of sick leave. Background Nursing is an art and science based on knowledge of professional caring. As such, the examination of how students perceive care may improve the way this concept is taught and learnt in nursing. Objectives To examine and describe the perception of caring among Spanish nursing students. Methods A cross-sectional design.From an initial population of 500 students, 321 volunteers participated in this study by completing the Caring Dimensions Inventory (CDI-25) during April 2014. Parametric tests were used to perform descriptive analyses of the dimensions of caring and the predominant factor; additionally, inferential (bivariate) analyses were performed of the dimensions of caring and of the predominant factor according to each of the independent variables. A logistic multinomial regression of the predominant psychosocial factor was calculated using the professional-technical factor as a reference, with adjustments for each of the covariates. Results The two dimensions most identified by students in relation to caring were: Providing privacy for a patient (D23) and Listening to a patient (D13) whereas the least identified were: Putting the needs of a patient before your own (D19) and Sharing your personal problems with a patient (D16). Overall, students identified caring mostly with the Psychosocial Factor (F1) (psychosocial aspects of care). Students in their first year identified caring more with the professional-technical factor, whereas those in their third and fourth year did so with the psychosocial factor. Conclusions The perception of caring among nursing students is a dynamic phenomenon that is modified throughout the nurse education process. The academic year, previous work experience in healthcare and the type of access to the university influence students' perceptions of caring. This study aimed to explore the reflective dialogues and processes that take place between preceptors and their nursing students and to examine how preceptors make use of their expert knowledge in order to enhance students' experiential learning during clinical placements. Two 30-h courses on reflective teaching were conducted. The study sample included 15 preceptors and 27 undergraduate nursing students. Data were collected during the course and during clinical placements at two X hospitals. Data collection included non-participatory observation and informal conversations with preceptors, in-depth interviews and focus groups. Preceptors used a series of strategies to promote experiential learning; these included creating links with practice, the use of examples, allowing students to adopt professional roles and enhancing autonomy. The value of preceptors is their wealth of professional experience, which is key during the learning process of nursing students. Preceptors must learn to master the art of questioning and stimulating reflective dialogues, in order to stimulate students' critical thinking and encourage them to resolve common problems that arise during practice. Background Patient communication is a key skill for nurses involved in clinical care. Its measurement is a complex phenomenon that can be addressed through attitude evaluation. Objectives To develop and psychometrically test a measure of nurses' attitudes towards communication with patients (ACO), to study the relationship between these dimensions, and to analyse nursing attitudes. Design To develop and psychometrically test the ACO questionnaire. Settings All hospitals in the province of Valencia were invited by e-mail to distribute the ACO instrument. Ten hospitals took part in the study. Participants The study population was composed of a convenience sample of 400 hospital nurses on general or special services. The inclusion criteria were nurses at the selected centres who had previously provided an informed consent to participate. Methods A literature review and expert consultation (N = 10) was used to develop the content of the questionnaire. The 62-item version of the instrument was applied to a convenience sample of 400 nurses between May 2015 and March 2016. Factor structure was evaluated with exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis (EFA, CFA), and reliability was evaluated with Cronbach's alpha, composite reliability (CR), and average variance extracted (AVE). Results The final instrument (ACO), composed of 25 items grouped into three attitude dimensions (cognitive, affective and behavioural), had good psychometric properties. In the study sample, nurses had a favourable attitude towards communication. The cognitive and affective dimensions of the ACO should be able to predict the behaviour dimension. Conclusion The ACO is useful for evaluating current clinical practices, identifying educational needs and assessing the effectiveness of communication training or other interventions intended to improve communication.
