Ultrafast charge separation after photoexcitation is a common phenomenon in various van-der-Waals (vdW) heterostructures with great relevance for future applications in light harvesting and detection. Theoretical understanding of this phenomenon converges towards a coherent mechanism through charge transfer states accompanied by energy dissipation into strongly coupled phonons. The detailed microscopic pathways are material specific as they sensitively depend on the band structures of the individual layers, the relative band alignment in the heterostructure, the twist angle between the layers, and interlayer interactions resulting in hybridization. We used time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with tight binding and density functional theory electronic structure calculations to investigate ultrafast charge separation and recombination in WS2-graphene vdW heterostructures. We identify several avoided crossings in the band structure and discuss their relevance for ultrafast charge transfer. We relate our own observations to existing theoretical models and propose a unified picture for ultrafast charge transfer in vdW heterostructures where band alignment and twist angle emerge as the most important control parameters.

Edoxaban is used for venous thromboembolism (VTE) treatment. Real-life data are lacking about its use in long-term therapy. We aimed to assess the efficacy and the safety of edoxaban for long-term VTE treatment in a real-life setting. Patients with VTE included in the Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica (RIETE) registry, receiving edoxaban 60 or 30 mg daily were prospectively followed up to validate the benefit of using different dosages. The main outcome was the composite of VTE recurrences or major bleeding in patients with or without criteria for dose reduction. Multivariable analysis to identify predictors for the composite outcome was performed. From October 2015 to November 2019, 562 patients received edoxaban for long-term therapy. Most (94%) of the 416 patients not meeting criteria for dose reduction received 60 mg daily, and 92 patients meeting criteria (63%) received 30 mg daily. During treatment, two patients developed recurrent VTE, six had major bleeding and nine died (2 from fatal bleeding). Among patients not meeting criteria for dose reduction, those receiving 30 mg daily had a higher rate of the composite event (hazard ratio (HR) 8.37; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.12–42.4) and a significant higher mortality rate (HR 31.1; 95% CI 4.63–262) than those receiving 60 mg. Among patients meeting criteria for dose reduction, those receiving 60 mg daily had no events, and a nonsignificantly higher mortality rate (HR 5.04; 95% CI 0.54–133) than those receiving 30 mg daily. In conclusion, edoxaban seems to be effective and safe for long-term VTE treatment in real life. Criteria for dose reduction should be reformulated., No funding was received for this work

Carotenoid staining has been repeatedly shown to serve as a sexually selected individual quality signal. In different species, individuals that show brighter carotenoid-based signals have been found to have superior feeding abilities, recover faster from disease, and generally enjoy better body condition. In the common crossbill (Loxia curvirostra), the colour has also been related to the different populations, with northern and central European populations being described as redder than those in the Mediterranean region. A study in the Pyrenees showed that long-winged individuals had lower apparent survival, and the proportion of red individuals was higher in long-winged birds, concluding that they could be nomadic birds (that travel long distances). A priori, if the red crossbills are more mobile than the yellow and orange ones, their apparent survival will be lower. However, in our study, red males showed a greater survival than males of other colours and almost double than that of the yellow ones. These results suggest that red coloration is linked to higher quality individuals regardless of their mobility. Die Farbgebung durch Carotinoide hat sich schon oft als ein geschlechtsspezifisches Signal für individuelle Qualität herausgestellt. Für unterschiedliche Tierarten hat man festgestellt, dass Individuen, die hellere, auf Carotinoiden basierende Farb-Signale aussenden, eine bessere Nahrungsaufnahme haben, sich schneller von Krankheiten erholen und allgemein in besserer körperlichen Verfassung sind. Beim Fichtenkreuzschnabel (Loxia curvirostra) wurde die Farbgebung auch mit verschiedenen Populationen in Verbindung gebracht, wobei die nord- und mitteleuropäischen Populationen als rötlicher beschrieben wurden als die des Mittelmeerraums. Eine Untersuchung in den Pyrenäen zeigte, dass Tiere mit längeren Flügeln eine offenbar geringere Überlebensrate und einen höheren Anteil an rötlichen Individuen aufwiesen, woraus zu schließen wäre, dass es sich um nomadisierende Vögel handeln könnte (die weite Strecken zurücklegen). Wenn die roten Fichtenkreuzschnäbel mobiler als die gelben und orangefarbenen sind, könnte ihre Überlebensrate mutmaßlich geringer sein. Aber in unserer Untersuchung lebten rötliche Männchen länger als andersgefärbte und fast doppelt so lang wie die gelblichen Männchen. Diese Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die rote Färbung mit höherwertigen Individuen verbunden ist, unabhängig von deren Mobilität.

The association between elevated liver enzymes or FIB-4 (fibrosis index 4) and outcome in patients with venous thromboembolism (VTE) has not been evaluated. Data from patients in RIETE (Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica) were used to assess the association between elevated liver enzymes or FIB-4 levels and the rates of major bleeding or death in apparent liver disease-free patients with acute VTE under anticoagulation therapy. A total of 6206 patients with acute VTE and without liver disease were included. Of them, 92 patients had major bleeding and 168 died under anticoagulation therapy. On multivariable analysis, patients with elevated liver enzymes were at increased mortality risk (HR: 1.58; 95% CI: 1.10–2.28), while those with FIB-4 levels > 2.67 points were at increased risk for major bleeding (HR: 1.69; 95% CI: 1.04–2.74). Evaluation of liver enzymes and FIB-4 index at baseline in liver disease-free patients with VTE may provide additional information on the risk for major bleeding or death during anticoagulation. Zoos and aquaria, often regarded as preservation-cum-entertainment enterprises, are also actors in the effort to curb the biodiversity crisis: raising awareness, supporting conservation, and conducting research. We assessed trends in zoo and aquaria research topics and study organisms over time worldwide. For the zoos and aquaria registered in the Species360’s Zoological Information Management System and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, we compiled metadata on their research published in the peerreviewed literature indexed in Scopus and carried out a keyword frequency analysis. The production of scientific papers by zoos increased at a much faster rate than the average accrual of scientific papers in the literature. Evolution of research themes ran parallel to that of biological sciences (e.g., development of molecular genetics or increased awareness about conservation). The focus of 48.5% of zoo-led research was on vertebrates, of which mammal research was 33.7%. Whether zoos are effectively contributing to conservation may still be debatable, but our results highlight their institutional efforts to increase knowledge about the species in their care. Los zoológicos y los acuarios, con frecuencia considerados empresas de conservación y entretenimiento, también son actores en el esfuerzo por reducir la crisis de la biodiversidad al crear conciencia, apoyar a la conservación y llevar a cabo investigaciones. Evaluamos las tendencias en los temas de investigación y los organismos de estudios en los zoológicos y los acuarios en todo el mundo a través del tiempo. Compilamos los metadatos de las investigaciones realizadas en los zoológicos y acuarios registrados en el Sistema de Manejo de Información Zoológica de Species360 y en la Asociación Mundial de Zoológicos y Acuarios que han sido publicadas en la literatura revisada por pares indexada en Scopus y realizamos un análisis de frecuencias de palabras clave. La producción de artículos científicos por zoológicos se incrementó a una tasa mucho más rápida que la acumulación promedio de artículos científicos en la literatura. La evolución de los temas de investigación fue paralela a la de las ciencias biológicas (p. ej.: desarrollo de la genética molecular o incremento en la conciencia por la conservación). El enfoque del 48.5% de las investigaciones conducidas por los zoológicos estuvo sobre los vertebrados. De este 48.5%, el 33.7% fueron investigaciones sobre mamíferos. Todavía puede debatirse si los zoológicos están contribuyendo efectivamente a la conservación, pero nuestros resultados resaltan sus esfuerzos institucionales por incrementar el conocimiento sobre las especies bajo su cuidado.

Background: We analyzed the prevalence, etiology, and risk factors of culture-positive preservation fluid and their impact on the management of solid organ transplant recipients. Methods: From July 2015 to March 2017, 622 episodes of adult solid organ transplants at 7 university hospitals in Spain were prospectively included in the study. Results: The prevalence of culture-positive preservation fluid was 62.5% (389/622). Nevertheless, in only 25.2% (98/389) of the cases were the isolates considered "high risk" for pathogenicity. After applying a multivariate regression analysis, advanced donor age was the main associated factor for having culture-positive preservation fluid for high-risk microorganisms. Preemptive antibiotic therapy was given to 19.8% (77/389) of the cases. The incidence rate of preservation fluid-related infection was 1.3% (5 recipients); none of these patients had received preemptive therapy. Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients with high-risk culture-positive preservation fluid receiving preemptive antibiotic therapy presented both a lower cumulative incidence of infection and a lower rate of acute rejection and graft loss compared with those who did not have high-risk culture-positive preservation fluid. After adjusting for age, sex, type of transplant, and prior graft rejection, preemptive antibiotic therapy remained a significant protective factor for 90-day infection. Conclusions: The routine culture of preservation fluid may be considered a tool that provides information about the contamination of the transplanted organ. Preemptive therapy for SOT recipients with high-risk culture-positive preservation fluid may be useful to avoid preservation fluid-related infections and improve the outcomes of infection, graft loss, and graft rejection in transplant patients.
