We develop, utilize, and validate techniques to produce a global data set of accurate coastal ocean surface vector winds. The dataset extends as near to the coast as 5 km and includes 10 years of SeaWinds on QuikSCAT ocean scatterometer data obtained from 1999 to 2009. We demonstrate improved retrievals over other large land-locked bodies of water as well, such as the Caspian Sea and the Great lakes. To determine the coastal winds we quantify the extent of land contamination in each scatterometer backscatter measurement and to the extent possible remove that contamination. After the measurements are thus corrected we retrieve winds with the corrected measurements using a previously published algorithm which has been extensively used for JPL scatterometer wind products. The coastal processing vastly increases the number of wind vector cells near coasts. We have ten times the number of wind vectors within 10 km of coast as without coastal processing, and over twice as many at 20 km from coast. These new wind vectors are high-quality, and have zero effect on non-coastal wind vectors. The effect of residual land contamination is quantified by comparing to buoys at varying distance from the coast and comparing coastal wind vector cells to oceanward neighbors. We show that the non-coastal QuikSCAT processing has very few good wind vectors nearer to the coast than about 22.5 km. In comparison to buoys, and oceanward neighbors, we find a small increase in speed errors of these new coastal wind vectors versus the performance of non-coastal QuikSCAT at 22.5 km, indicating the high-quality of these new coastal wind vectors. A quality control scheme is employed that flags regions where the coastal wind retrieval is poor due to the assumptions inherent in the technique being locally invalid. The coastal winds retrieved in this manner have been publicly distributed to the oceanography community and utilized in other published works.

Fields of coastal wind stress and wind stress curl in the 10–100 km next to the land control the processes of upwelling and downwelling of nutrients and water properties that are vital to highly productive coastal marine ecosystems. Here we ask the question: Do the present surface wind stress products from a satellite-borne scatterometer (QuikSCAT) and an atmospheric reanalysis model (ERA-5) systematically overestimate the magnitude of wind speed and stress in the 10–50 km next to the coast? We compare QuikSCAT wind speed retrievals to the relatively unused wind speed retrievals from satellite altimeters, which are able to approach closer to the coast than scatterometers without land reflections, due to their smaller radar footprints. Altimeter data on tracks approaching and crossing the coast indicate that the increases in coastal QuikSCAT wind speed values and ERA-5 coastal wind stress values are unrealistic. For analyses of wind speed and stress requiring high accuracy, especially those involving wind stress curl, we suggest considering individual Level 2B scatterometer wind retrievals as suspect at distances of 10 km and less from the coast, along with use of the Poor Coastal Processing flag. We found that similar increases in wind stress values next to the coast in gridded ERA-5 fields are not due to errors in the model physics or wind speeds. They are created during the interpolation of wind stress from the original model grid to a regular rectangular grid. We recommend that researchers who are analyzing wind stress and wind stress curl should calculate wind stress themselves from the gridded ERA-5 vector wind speed fields, rather than using the interpolated model wind stress or curl fields.

The goal of the Pacific Ocean Boundary Ecosystem and Climate Study (POBEX) was to diagnose the large-scale climate controls on regional transport dynamics and lower trophic marine ecosystem variability in Pacific Ocean boundary systems. An international team of collaborators shared observational and eddy-resolving modeling data sets collected in the Northeast Pacific, including the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) and the California Current System (CCS), the Humboldt or Peru-Chile Current System (PCCS), and the Kuroshio-Oyashio Extension (KOE) region. POBEX investigators found that a dominant fraction of decadal variability in basin- and regional-scale salinity, nutrients, chlorophyll, and zooplankton taxa is explained by a newly discovered pattern of ocean-climate variability dubbed the North Pacific Gyre Oscillation (NPGO) and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). NPGO dynamics are driven by atmospheric variability in the North Pacific and capture the decadal expression of Central Pacific El Niños in the extratropics, much as the PDO captures the low-frequency expression of eastern Pacific El Niños. By combining hindcasts of eddy-resolving ocean models over the period 1950–2008 with model passive tracers and long-term observations (e.g., CalCOFI, Line-P, Newport Hydrographic Line, Odate Collection), POBEX showed that the PDO and the NPGO combine to control low-frequency upwelling and alongshore transport dynamics in the North Pacific sector, while the eastern Pacific El Niño dominates in the South Pacific. Although different climate modes have different regional expressions, changes in vertical transport (e.g., upwelling) were found to explain the dominant nutrient and phytoplankton variability in the CCS, GOA, and PCCS, while changes in alongshore transport forced much of the observed long-term change in zooplankton species composition in the KOE as well as in the northern and southern CCS. In contrast, cross-shelf transport dynamics were linked to mesoscale eddy activity, driven by regional-scale dynamics that are largely decoupled from variations associated with the large-scale climate modes. Preliminary findings suggest that mesoscale eddies play a key role in offshore transport of zooplankton and impact the life cycles of higher trophic levels (e.g., fish) in the CCS, PCCS, and GOA. Looking forward, POBEX results may guide the development of new modeling and observational strategies to establish mechanistic links among climate forcing, mesoscale circulation, and marine population dynamics.

Physical processes, biotic processes and human activities all act to shape marine ecosystems. Future management of these valuable ecosystems requires an integrative approach that takes into account complicated organismal interactions, oceanographic processes that span large scales of time and space, and how anthropogenic effects interact with the natural environment. The temperate west coasts of North and South America represent a unique opportunity for comparison, as many of the same oceanographic processes, particularly upwelling, occur off both coasts. Additionally, a number of marine ecosystems in both areas have surprising parallels. Here we present an overview of the oceanographic processes that dominate the coastlines, and give examples of ecosystems and the effects that oceanography, human activities and their interaction have on the communitiesLos procesos físicos y biológicos y las actividades humanas determinan los ecosistemas marinos. Sea surface height (SSH) fields, constructed from multiple altimeters, have revealed the annual generation of anticyclonic eddies around the Alaska Gyre. These eddies appear to develop annually along the eastern margin of the Gyre from instabilities in the poleward Alaska Current, after it reaches its seasonal maximum in transport in winter. After forming, the eddies propagate westward just offshore of the continental slope, where they draw shelf water containing nutrients and phytoplankton into the deep offshore waters, as seen by the SeaWiFS satellite ocean color sensor. In this manner, they enrich a region of the ocean that is dominated by downwelling-favorable wind forcing. Off Chile, the Cape Horn Current is the analog of the Alaska Current, flowing poleward and driven by cyclonic winds, associated with winter storms. In this presentation we will use satellite fields of SSH and Chlorophyll-a pigment concentrations to examine the relatively unstudied Cape Horn Current and compare its seasonal behavior to the Alaska Current. We will specifically look for anticyclonic eddies, similar to those in the Alaska Gyre

Coral larval dispersal establishes connectivity between reefs, but larval fluxes vary over timescales from daily to multidecadal due to oceanographic variability. Using a 2‐km‐resolution ocean model, we simulate daily spawning events from 1993 to 2019 and assess the potential connectivity between all reefs in the tropical southwest Indian Ocean. Although there is a significant seasonal cycle in potential connectivity, day‐to‐day variability generally dominates. Larval dispersal pathways on any particular day provide limited information about the dispersal pathways a few days later. The magnitude of this high‐frequency variability depends on the local geography and oceanography, with small and isolated reefs generally subject to the most variability. Stochastic oceanographic variability introduces considerable uncertainty to dispersal predictions, imposing fundamental limitations on what simulations can tell us about inter‐reef connectivity. Protracted spawning over only a few days can significantly reduce variability associated with the likelihood of a larva settling. The duration of spawning is therefore a more important parameter in modeling coral connectivity than the exact timing of spawning onset. Finally, we find that a small proportion of spawning events account for the majority of settling larvae, particularly at remote islands, and demonstrate that a time‐mean picture of dispersal may be inappropriate for predicting demographic and genetic connectivity. Given the diversity of coral reef environments in the southwest Indian Ocean, we expect that these results will apply to inter‐reef coral connectivity across the tropics more broadly, as well as other weakly swimming reef taxa with the potential for long‐distance dispersal. Satellite altimetry data are facing big challenges near the coasts. These challenges arise due to the fundamental difficulties of correction and land contamination in the foot print, which result in rejection of these data near the coast. Several studies have been carried out to extend these data towards the coast. Over the Red Sea, altimetry data consist of gaps, which extend to about 30–50 km from the coast. Two methods are used for processing and extending Jason-2 satellite altimetry sea level anomalies (SLAs) towards the Red Sea coast; Fourier Series Model (FSM), and the polynomial sum of sine model (SSM). FSM model technique uses Fourier series and statistical analysis reflects strong relationship with both the observation and AVISO data, with strong and positive correlation. The second prediction technique, SSM model, depends on the polynomial sum of sine, and does not reflect any relationship with the observations and AVISO data close to the coast and the correlation coefficient (CC) is weak and negative. The strong increase in altimeter measurement errors near land surfaces is a limiting factor for coastal applications. We analyze the performance of the new Ka-band SARAL/AltiKa (SRL) mission in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea. SRL sea surface height (SSH) measurements are compared with those from the Jason-2 Ku-band satellite mission. The results show a significant increase in both quantity and quality of SSH data available near coastlines when using SRL data. Available edited data are 95.1% of SRL compared with 88.6% for Jason-2. Closer than 10 km to the coastline, available SRL data are still about 60% and only about 31% for Jason-2. Comparisons of the altimeter sea level variations are made with available coastal tide gauge data. The differences obtained between altimeter and tide gauge SLA time series are reduced for SRL (3.3 cm in average) compared with Jason-2 (4.2 cm in average), especially closer than 30 km to the land. It results in higher correlations (by 30%) obtained with SRL data. The coastal circulation derived from altimetry using SRL data shows an offshore meandering, which is more stable in time and with larger velocities close to the coast than that derived from Jason-2 observations. The northwestern Pacific Ocean is a complex region with significant biological spatial variations on a seasonal timescale. To investigate the joint variation patterns on both seasonal and interannual timescales, a season-reliant empirical orthogonal function (S-EOF) analysis was applied to seasonal mean chlorophyll-aconcentration (chl-a) anomalies in the northwestern Pacific Ocean during the period 1998–2010. The first two dominant modes accounted for nearly 31% of the total interannual variance, with the second S-EOF mode (S-EOF2) lagging behind the first S-EOF mode (S-EOF1) by one year. S-EOF1 featured a strong variation pattern to the north of 30° N, with maximum chl-ain winter and minimum chl-ain summer. However, S-EOF2 indicated an opposite seasonally evolving pattern compared with S-EOF1, with chl-aincreasing along the Kuroshio and extension current from boreal winter to autumn. Both these modes revealed significant relationships with climate-related indices. The two modes corresponded to the central Pacific (CP) La Niña developing episodes and the turnaround from eastern Pacific (EP) La Niña to CP El Niño, respectively. Both modes were associated with the cold phase of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, which played an important role in prolonging the impact of the El Niño/Southern Oscillation on chl-aseasonal evolution from 1998 to 2010. In addition, we discuss the possible factors dominating chl-aseasonal variation, in terms of the subregions of the northwestern Pacific Ocean. In the subtropical northwestern Pacific Ocean (15° N – 30° N), the chl-agrowth was primarily nutrient-limited, whereas in the mid-latitude northwestern Pacific Ocean (35° N – 50° N), the chl-agrowth was mainly light-limited. The preparation process of an impending earthquake may leave fingerprints on the earth's surface. Elastic strain in rocks, formation of micro-cracks, gas releases and other chemical or physical activities in the earth's crust before and during earthquakes has been reported to cause rises in temperature, surface latent heat flux (SLHF), upwelling index and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) concentration on the ground or sea surface. Changes in surface temperature can be monitored with thermal infrared sensors such as NOAA-AVHRR and microwave radiometers like AMSR-E/Aqua. SLHF data and upwelling indices are provided by National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Reanalysis Project and Pacific Fisheries Environmental Laboratory, respectively. This study examines behaviors of the above four factors prior to the past three oceanic and coastal earthquakes occurred at the Pacific Ocean (Northern California of June 15, 2005, Central California of September 28, 2004, and December 22, 2003). We were successful in detecting pre-earthquake anomalies prior to all three earthquakes. Our detailed analysis revealed 1-5 °C rises in surface temperature in epicentral areas. Considerable anomalies in Chl-a concentration, 1-2 weeks before the day of the main earthquakes, were spotted, which are attributed to the rise in upwelling index. Time series of SLHF showed meaningful rises from 1 month to a fortnight before the earthquake events. One problem in our research was the low resolution of the data which makes the graphs that are generated from NCEP database affected by all sources of anomalies, other than seismic activities, within an about 1.8°-2.5° (200 km) area. The knowledge of ocean surface circulation is of major importance for many applications, including the understanding of global climate, resources exploitation, and containment of chemical spills. In this letter, sea-surface feature tracking based on the Hopfield neural network (NN) is described. The method is based on the minimization of an energy function that represents the feature tracking problem. A Hopfield NN is used to merge cross-correlation information with prior knowledge of sea-surface flows and image contextual information. It has been tested on real satellite images. A set of five Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer thermal images of the coastal zone of California, along with a data set of coincident surface drifters positions, was used to test the method. Results of the new analysis are compared with in situ data and previous results using other techniques. The first two years of SeaWiFS (Sea viewing Wide Field of view Sensor) data (1997-1999) are used to document the variability of large-scale surface chlorophyll patterns within the coastal region along the full latitudinal extent of each of the four major global eastern boundary currents; the California, Humboldt, Benguela and Canary Currents. Seasonal chlorophyll patterns are compared to coincident seasonal cycles of Ekman transport calculated from satellite scatterometer data. In all four regions, maximum chlorophyll concentrations are generally temporally and latitudinally coincident with the seasonal maximum in upwelling (offshore Ekman transport) over most of their latitudinal range, but exceptions are documented. Interannual differences are evident in each region, most notably in the two Pacific regions where the 1997-1998 chlorophyll seasonality was affected by El Niño conditions. Significant differences between previously published chlorophyll seasonality deduced from the relatively sparse coverage of the Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) and the more complete coverage of SeaWiFS in both Southern Hemisphere regions are evident.
