Abstract This work presents experimental results on the energy efficiency in hydrogen production using atmospheric microwave plasma (915 MHz) through steam reforming of ethanol. Ethanol was chosen as a liquid hydrogen carrier due to its high hydrogen atom content, low cost, and wide availability. The experimental work began with the maximization of an energy efficiency of the used microwave plasma source. The process of maximization involved determining a position of a movable plunger that ensures the most efficient transfer of microwave energy from a microwave source to the generated plasma in the microwave plasma source. The aim of the investigations was to test the following working conditions of the microwave plasma source: absorbed microwave power P A by the generated plasma (up to 5.4 kW), the carrier gas volumetric flow rate (up to 3900 Nl/h), and the amount of the introduced ethanol vapours on the efficiency of hydrogen production (up to 2.4 kg/h). In the range of tested working conditions, the highest energy yield for hydrogen production achieved a rate of 26.9 g(H2)/kWh, while the highest hydrogen production was 99.3 g(H2)/h.

An atmospheric pressure plasma source of the microwave plasma pencil type utilizing a coaxial line is presented. The generated plasma takes the form of a cylinder up to about 30 mm long and up to 5 mm in diameter. It is suitable for surface sterilization, surface treatment, and material processing. This study numerically analyzes the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the plasma pencil, which compromises performance and poses safety risks. Electric field distributions, radiation patterns, the ratio of the power entering the discharge to the incident wave power, and the ratio of radiated power to entering power were numerically investigated for different plasma parameters and pencil lengths. Results indicate that increasing electron density, gas temperature, plasma length, and pencil length increases the radiated power by up to more than 60% of the entering power, and the radiation patterns can be highly non-uniform with strong backward lobe. The numerical finding were qualitatively confirmed experimentally. It was also found that it is possible to reduce radiation from the device by using appropriately designed cones, the presence of which does not impede its performance.

This manuscript investigates the cultural and educational dimensions of murals and graffiti in the ruins of the Aliko Hotel on Naxos Island. Moving beyond their aesthetic value, these artworks are examined as conduits for complex sociocultural and educational discourses. Employing semiotic analysis, particularly informed by Roland Barthes’ conceptual framework, the study offers a multi-layered interpretation of the significance of street art. A systematic approach guided the empirical data collection, entailing the careful selection and categorisation of 76 photographs, eventually honed down to 21 key images for detailed analysis. This set, comprising 6 murals and 15 graffiti pieces, was subjected to meticulous examination to discern both dominant themes and motifs (‘studium’) and the elements evoking personal connections (‘punktum’), thereby facilitating emotional and intellectual engagement. The methodology of the study is tailored to uncover the collective narratives encapsulated within these visual forms, as well as the individual responses they provoke. It probes how personal interpretations are influenced by the viewers’ beliefs and backgrounds, thereby expanding the semiotic analysis to encompass both shared and individual meanings. This balanced analytical approach deepens the understanding of visual expressions as dynamic interactions between the artwork and its audience. It underscores the transformative role of street art in urban environments and its contribution to public art discourse. The impending demolition of the Hotel Aliko ruins underscores the ephemeral nature of street art. The murals and graffiti, as transient custodians of cultural and social narratives, accentuate the fragile nature of this cultural heritage. This critical moment underscores the importance of documenting and preserving such art forms and the stories they encapsulate, highlighting their significant role in shaping community identity and cultural education.

Abstract This paper is a contribution to the development of microwave plasma-based technology aimed at efficient hydrogen (H2) production from a so-called synthetic biogas, considered a mixture of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), which can contain up to 70% CH4. In this work, we tested the performance of a waveguide-supplied metal cylinder-based microwave plasma source (MPS) operating at 915 MHz at atmospheric pressure as a tool for the efficient production of H2 in the steam reforming of the synthetic biogas. The test showed that the steam reforming of the synthetic biogas could be carried out under a wide range of working parameters without soot formation and extinction of the microwave discharge. We found that there is a minimal H2Osteam consumption rate for a given CH4 input volume content, which ensures stable operation of the MPS (no soot). The experiments did not show that increasing the amount of H2Osteam rate above the minimal value for a given CH4 input volume content results in an increase in the H2 production rate, energy yield, CH4 conversion degree, and H2 output concentration. To describe the MPS performance, which also takes into account a factor of the utilization of the CH4 feedstock, we introduced a new parameter, called an energy–CH4 feedstock consumption yield. The best results in terms of the H2 production rate, the energy yield, and the CH4 conversion degree were 239 g[H2]/h 36.8 g[H2]/kWh, and 74.3%, respectively. This shows that the application of the steam reforming, instead of the dry reforming, resulted in a 1.5-fold increase of the H2 production rate and the corresponding energy yield.

Abstract This paper presents the results of experimental investigations of the plasma surface modification of a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer and PMMA composites with a [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester fullerene derivative (PC61BM). An atmospheric pressure microwave (2.45 GHz) argon plasma sheet was used. The experimental parameters were: an argon (Ar) flow rate (up to 20 NL/min), microwave power (up to 530 W), number of plasma scans (up to 3) and, the kind of treated material. In order to assess the plasma effect, the possible changes in the wettability, roughness, chemical composition, and mechanical properties of the plasma-treated samples’ surfaces were evaluated by water contact angle goniometry (WCA), atomic force microscopy (AFM), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The best result concerning the water contact angle reduction was from 83° to 29.7° for the PMMA material. The ageing studies of the PMMA plasma-modified surface showed long term (100 h) improved wettability. As a result of plasma treating, changes in the samples surface roughness parameters were observed, however their dependence on the number of plasma scans is irregular. The ATR-FTIR spectra of the PMMA plasma-treated surfaces showed only slight changes in comparison with the spectra of an untreated sample. The more significant differences were demonstrated by XPS measurements indicating the surface chemical composition changes after plasma treatment and revealing the oxygen to carbon ratio increase from 0.1 to 0.4.

In this article, the results of key lime fruit (Citrus aurantifolia) wastes and cabbage (Brassica L.) wastes anaerobic digestion are presented. Anaerobic digestion of the wastes was performed in batch process, neutral pH (key-lime 7.47 and cabbage 7.67) and substrate concentration of Volatile Suspended Solids (VSS) 10 gVSS/L. One of the aims of this research was to check the availability of these substrates to be the source of methane and hydrogen. Key lime wastes produced 32 times more methane than raw cabbage. However, hydrogen production from cabbage was 149 times higher than key lime. The percentage of methane production in cabbage was up to 81% and in key lime was up to 75%. This research showed from the substrates comparison that efficient hydrogen production is less dependent on low pKa, pH than on total solids of the substrates.

A new type of microwave plasma source is presented in which plasma at atmospheric pressure is generated inside a quartz rectangular flat box placed in a stripline supplied by a 2.45 GHz coaxial line. The plasma has a sheet shape and is designed for surface modification. Electric field and power flux distributions, tuning characteristics, and power characteristics (ratios of radiated, absorbed, and entering power) are numerically studied for three configurations: open, semi-closed, and closed. The calculations show that near-zero radiation reduction is possible only for the closed configuration, while the ratio of radiated power to entering power is always greater than 30% for the other configurations. The moving plunger is not sufficient for the ratio of reflected to incident power to fall below 20% for both the closed and open configurations. This is possible for the semi-closed configuration, but then the radiated power is the highest. The experiment shows that for the same entering power, the plasma volume is largest for the closed configuration and smallest for the open configuration, which we attribute to the difference in radiated power. The plasma generated using the closed stripline configuration has a larger volume than plasma generated using the rectangular waveguide.

ABSTRACT B cell follicles of the spleen and lymph nodes are immune privileged sites and serve as sanctuaries for infected CD4+ cells in HIV infection. It is assumed that CD8+ T cell responses promote the establishment of the reservoir, as B cell follicles do not permit CD8+ T cell entry. Here we analyzed the infected cell population in the Friend retrovirus (FV) infection and investigated whether FV can similarly infect follicular cells. For analysis of FV-infected cells, we constructed a recombinant FV encoding the bright fluorescent protein mWasabi and performed flow cytometry with cells isolated from spleens, lymph nodes and bone marrow of FV-mWasabi-infected mice. Using t-stochastic neighbor embedding for data exploration, we demonstrate how the target cell population changes during the course of infection. While FV was widely distributed in erythrocytes, myeloid cells, B cells, and CD4+ T cells in the acute phase of infection, the bulk viral load in the late phase was carried by macrophages and follicular B and CD4+ T cells, suggesting that FV persists in cells that are protected from CD8+ T cell killing. Importantly, seeding into follicular cells was equally observed in CD8+ T cell-depleted mice and in highly FV-susceptible mice that mount a very weak immune response, demonstrating that infection of follicular cells is not driven by immune pressure. Our data demonstrate that infection of cells in the B cell follicle is a characteristic of the FV infection, making this murine retrovirus an even more valuable model for development of retrovirus immunotherapy approaches. IMPORTANCE Human immunodeficiency virus is notorious for its ability to avoid clearance by therapeutic interventions, which is partly attributed to the establishment of reservoirs in latently infected cells and cells that reside in immunologically privileged B cell follicles. In the work presented here, we show that cells of the B cell follicle are equally infected by a simple mouse gammaretrovirus. Using fluorescently labeled Friend retrovirus, we found that B cells and T cells in the B cell follicle, while not carrying the bulk of the virus load, were indeed infected by Friend virus in the early acute phase of the infection and persisted in the chronic infection. Our results suggest that infection of follicular cells may be a shared property of lymphotropic viruses and propose the FV infection of mice as a useful model to study strategies for follicular reservoir elimination.

The world of international schools is expanding, fuelled in part by globalisation and the ease with which employees can relocate across the globe as they seek new employment opportunities. As these mobile families relocate overseas, international schools provide an education for their children which may offer a curriculum based on a common and transferable syllabus, similar to one they experienced at home. The research on which this article is based presents a picture not only of teaching in the United Kingdom and overseas, but also of teachers' perceptions, views and expectations regarding international teaching. It offers comparisons between what teachers at home believe is happening, and the reality as perceived by those with overseas experience. The study explores this internationally nomadic workforce, and observes the growth in international schools which, in turn, has further increased the demand for the international teacher. The findings show that the majority of "home" teachers in the study are aware of the international opportunities available to teachers. The results also show similarities in responses from home and overseas teachers. This research furthermore reveals that there exists a continually growing market, which provides teachers with increased choice about where to teach, live and progress their career.

The hydrogen production by conversion of liquid compounds containing hydrogen was investigated experimentally. The waveguide-supplied metal cylinder-based microwave plasma source (MPS) operated at frequency of 915 MHz at atmospheric pressure was used. The decomposition of ethanol, isopropanol and kerosene was performed employing plasma dry reforming process. The liquid was introduced into the plasma in the form of vapour. The amount of vapour ranged from 0.4 to 2.4 kg/h. Carbon dioxide with the flow rate ranged from 1200 to 2700 NL/h was used as a working gas. The absorbed microwave power was up to 6 kW. The effect of absorbed microwave power, liquid composition, liquid flow rate and working gas fl ow rate was analysed. All these parameters have a clear influence on the hydrogen production efficiency, which was described with such parameters as the hydrogen production rate [NL(H2)/h] and the energy yield of hydrogen production [NL(H2)/kWh]. The best achieved experimental results showed that the hydrogen production rate was up to 1116 NL(H2)/h and the energy yield was 223 NL(H2) per kWh of absorbed microwave energy. The results were obtained in the case of isopropanol dry reforming. The presented catalyst-free microwave plasma method can be adapted for hydrogen production not only from ethanol, isopropanol and kerosene, but also from different other liquid compounds containing hydrogen, like gasoline, heavy oils and biofuels.

Current industry needs are related to higher awareness of modern consumers. These consumers are looking for products in which properties such as bioactive compounds are preserved as much as possible. Plasma treatment is one of the most promising nonthermal technologies that can decontaminate food and keep its original properties. Therefore, the aim of this work was to examine the usefulness of atmospheric pressure argon microwave plasma on decontamination of black pepper seeds, allspice berries and juniper berries. The samples were irradiated by plasma for 15–60 s and their physicochemical (dry matter content, water activity, color, total phenolic content, antioxidant activity, piperine content in black pepper seeds) and microbial (bacteria and molds count) quality was evaluated afterwards. Results demonstrated that plasma irradiation for 15 s was sufficient for partial inactivation of A. niger but less effective against the Gram-positive bacterium B. subtilis, regardless of the raw material. At the same time, plasma treatment reduced water activity, which can positively affect further storage of spices. Properly selected plasma parameters may also enhance extractability of phenolics or piperine (from black pepper seeds) and improve antioxidant activity with not very great, but visible, color changes.

The paper presents the investigations of an atmospheric-pressure argon plasma generated at 915 MHz microwaves using the optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The 915 MHz microwave plasma was inducted and sustained in a waveguide-supplied coaxial-line-based nozzleless microwave plasma source. The aim of presented investigations was to estimate parameters of the generated plasma, that is, excitation temperature of electrons Texc, temperature of plasma gas Tg, and concentration of electrons ne. Assuming that excited levels of argon atoms are in local thermodynamic equilibrium, Boltzmann method allowed in determining the Texc temperature in the range of 8100–11000 K. The temperature of plasma gas Tg was estimated by comparing the simulated spectra of the OH radical to the measured one in LIFBASE program. The obtained Tg temperature ranged in 1200–2800 K. Using a method based on Stark broadening of the Hβ line, the concentration of electrons ne was determined in the range from 1.4 × 1015 to 1.7 × 1015 cm−3, depending on the power absorbed by the microwave plasma.

The specific properties of an atmospheric pressure plasma make it an attractive tool for the surface treatment of various materials. With this in mind, this paper presents the results of experimental investigations of a polycarbonate (PC) material surface modification using this new type of argon microwave (2.45 GHz) plasma source. The uniqueness of the new plasma source lies in the shape of the generated plasma—in contrast to other microwave plasma sources, which usually provide a plasma in the form of a flame or column, the new ones provides a plasma in the shape of a regular plasma sheet. The influence of the absorbed microwave power and the number of scans on the changes of the wettability and morphological and mechanical properties of the plasma-treated PC samples was investigated. The mechanical properties and changes in roughness of the samples were measured by the use of atomic force microscopy (AFM). The wettability of the plasma-modified samples was tested by measuring the water contact angle. In order to confirm the plasma effect, each of the above-mentioned measurements was performed before and after plasma treatment. All experimental tests were performed with an argon of flow rate up to 20 L/min and the absorbed microwave power ranged from 300 to 850 W. The results prove the capability of the new atmospheric pressure plasma type in modifying the morphological and mechanical properties of PC surfaces for industrial applications.

We attempted to search novel Bacillus thuringiensis strains that produce crystals with potential utility in plant protection and with higher activity than strains already used in biopesticide production. Seven B. thuringiensis soil and water isolates were used in the research. We predicted the toxicity of their crystals by cry gene identification employing PCR method. The isolate MPU B63 with interesting, according to us, genes content was used in evaluating its crystal toxicity against Cydia pomonella caterpillars. The strain MPU B63 was cultured from water sample and had cry1Ab, cry1B, and cry15 genes. The LC50 crystals of MPU B63 were compared to LC50 of commercial bioinsecticide Foray determined against C. pomonella (codling moth). The activity of MPU B63 inclusions against codling moth larvae was approximately 24-fold higher than that of Foray. The results are a promising introduction for further study evaluating the potential usefulness of isolate MPU B63 crystals in plant protection.

We describe the design, fabrication, testing, and antenna-range demonstration of a photonic wavelengthmultiplexed true-time-delay steering system for use with broadband phased-array antennas. The prototype system is based on a unique hardware-compressive architecture and can drive 16 antenna elements over the 0.35-2.1-GHz band with 6-bit angular resolution over a ±45° scan angle.

A biological model was designed to test the feasibility of making cryosurgical measurements and to determine if the measurements coincided with a theoretical mathematical model. The object of these studies was to convert cryosurgery from a qualitative to a quantitative therapeutic modality.

A comprehensive evaluation of the major aspects of cryosurgery has been explored in this preliminary study. A thermal monitoring system has been used concomitantly with cryosurgery, and characteristic freezing pattern differences between normal and malignant tissue have been demonstrated. Morphologic examination of the sections from the control and experimental animals subjected to cryosurgery has been valuable to demonstrate consistent tissue damage. This study has also shown the feasibility of implementing a thermodynamic mathematical model to establish the basis for clinical application of cryosurgery on a more rational therapeutic basis.
