Abstract

This unit, "Explorations of Identity and Privilege," was designed for first year writing courses at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) taught in 2015 and 2016. The course as a whole focused on writing and inquiry. Within this unit, students discussed essays relating to different forms of privilege (e.g. racial, gender, class) and explored their relationship to privilege in a final unit paper. Student writing emphasized self-awareness of how components of their identities--and the identities of others--are rewarded or penalized within their sociocultural environment. While students might be aware of their privilege(s) or lack thereof on some level, reading and discussing essays written by others helped students critically examine their personal experiences within a larger conversation.

31. Lacquer Nation: An Eco Art History of Modern Jōbōji Lacquer

Abstract

This dissertation employs a landscape-focused approach to examine practical craft objects, fine art, and architecture coated with Jōbōji lacquer that date from the late nineteenth century to the early 2000s. I address lacquered objects made from “Jōbōji lacquer” tree sap tapped from East Asian lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum) forests in a remote, mountainous area of northern Japan that I refer to as the “Jōbōji lacquer landscape,” centered in the town of Jōbōji. I examine the dynamic expansions and contractions of Jōbōji lacquer as it is planted, harvested, purified, and rematerialized as craft objects and architectural complexes that serve as visual and material indicators of the modern Japanese nation-state. This landscape approach discloses site-specific responses to a shifting world of craft production; it reveals an ongoing struggle for survival—social, cultural, and biomaterial—of lacquer craft and the specific forest, community, and artisanal practices of Jōbōji. This struggle arose in the face of industrial modernity and its challenge to the value of the “handmade” and “traditional” crafts, mass-production of plastic wares that lowered demand for lacquerware, and the nation-state’s campaign to establish a national art canon and history, as well as a national aesthetics. I show how Meiji period (1868-1912) Jōbōji lacquer artisans conjoined the techniques and designs of Jōbōji lacquer with a nationalized lacquer tradition known as maki-e (“sprinkled picture”) in response to the technique’s promulgation by the Artists for the Imperial Household System, the Tokyo School of the Arts, and International Expositions in the 1880s and 1890s. In the 1930s and 1940s, Jōbōji lacquerware appears in magazines, periodicals, and exhibitions formulated by advocates of the Folk Crafts Movement (Mingei Undō), demonstrating how the aesthetic qualities of Jōbōji lacquer—simple designs, practicality, and the lively technique of urushi-e (“lacquer pictures”)—embodied the mingei theorist and collector Yanagi Muneyoshi’s (1889-1961) ideals of the “People’s Art.” In the postwar period, artists such as Koseki Rokuhei (1918-2011) utilized Jōbōji lacquer to execute the traditional maki-e lacquer technique, creating abstract sculptural forms that reveal the possibilities of lacquer material as a medium capable of abstract visual expression in the realm of contemporary “craft art” (kōgei bijutsu). Finally, the use of Jōbōji lacquer in the restoration of the exterior of the Yōmeimon (“Gate of Illuminating Sun”) at the Nikkō Tōshōgū shrine-temple complex—designated as a National Treasure and UNESCO World Heritage Site—points to the growing sense of national pride associated with the tapping of “authentic” Japanese lacquer, and demonstrates how the efforts lacquer sap collectors are now oriented toward national and global cultural heritage preservation and restoration.

36. Eagle syndrome and vascular complications—a systematic review.

Abstract

Vascular complications occurring in Eagle syndrome are seldom described. The aim of this study was to systematically review the occurrence, characteristics, and management outcomes of vascular complications occurring in Eagle syndrome. A systematic review was conducted with a search in several databases. The research question was "What characterizes Eagle syndrome with vascular complications and how should it be managed?" The initial search yielded 4145 results; 150 of these were included, reporting a total of 231 patients with vascular complications. Arterial impingement (67.5%) was more frequent than venous impingement (32.5%). The most frequent consequence of arterial impingement was stroke (46.8%), while for venous impingement it was chronic headache (68%). Seventy-nine patients underwent styloidectomy as initial treatment: 78.5% of the patients were cured and 19.0% improved, while only 2.5% showed a recurrence. On the other hand, among the 106 patients treated medically without initial styloidectomy, only 24.5% of the patients were cured, 28.3% improved, and 47.2% had a recurrence. The association of symptoms of classic Eagle syndrome with neurovascular symptoms should prompt clinicians to consider this diagnosis and to measure the styloid length. Styloidectomy is the treatment of choice to obtain the best cure rate and reduce recurrence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation EEG Reveals Reduced Neural Sensitivity to Fearful Faces in Children with Autism

Abstract

We objectively quantified the neural sensitivity of school-aged boys with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD) to detect briefly presented fearful expressions by combining fast periodic visual stimulation with frequency-tagging electroencephalography. Images of neutral faces were presented at 6 Hz, periodically interleaved with fearful expressions at 1.2 Hz oddball rate. While both groups equally display the face inversion effect and mainly rely on information from the mouth to detect fearful expressions, boys with ASD generally show reduced neural responses to rapid changes in expression. At an individual level, fear discrimination responses predict clinical status with an 83% accuracy. This implicit and straightforward approach identifies subtle deficits that remain concealed in behavioral tasks, thereby opening new perspectives for clinical diagnosis.

Abstract

Tendrils of climbing plants possess a striking spring-like structure characterized by a minimum of two helices of opposite handedness connected by a perversion. By performing tensile experiments and morphological measurements on tendrils of the climbing passion flower Passiflora discophora , we show that these tendril springs act as coil springs within the plant's attachment system and resemble technical coil springs. However, tendril springs have a low spring index and a high pitch angle compared with typical metal coil springs resulting in a more complex loading situation in the plant tendrils. Moreover, the tendrils undergo a drastic shift from the fresh turgescent stage to a dried-off and dead senescent stage. This entails changes in material properties (elastic modulus in tension), morphology (tendril and helix diameter, number of windings), anatomy (tissue composition), and failure behavior (susceptibility to delamination) and reduces the degree of elasticity and strain at failure of the tendrils. Nevertheless, senescent tendrils remain functional as springs and maintain high energy dissipation capacity and high break force. This renders the system highly energy efficient, as the plant no longer needs to metabolically sustain the died-back tendrils. Because of its energy-storing spring system, its high energy dissipation and high safety factor, the attachment system can be considered a 'fail-safe' system. The use of coil springs as mechanical devices is not restricted to man-made machinery; striking spring structures can also be found within the attachment systems of climbing plants. Passiflora discophora climbs by using long thin tendrils with adhesive pads at their tips. Once the pads have attached to a support, the tendrils coil and form a spring-like structure. Here, we analyze the form and mechanics of these 'tendril springs', compare them with conventional technical coil springs, and discuss changes in the tendril springs during plant development. We reveal the main features of the attachment system, which might inspire new artificial attachment devices within the emerging field of plant-inspired soft-robotics. 48. Effect of the addition of an ultraviolet B light bulb for 6 months to the enclosure of client-owned cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) on serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentrations.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation on the serum concentration of 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] in pet cockatiels (Nymphicus hollandicus) living in their home environments. Thirty client-owned cockatiels were allocated to an intervention group, consisting of exposure to a commercial coil fluorescent bulb, or a control group, with no exposure to supplemental lighting. Blood samples were collected at baseline (Day 0) and 6 months after simple randomization for measurement of 25(OH)D (Day 180). A linear mixed model was used to determine if serum 25(OH)D concentrations were influenced by time, group, age, or sex. At baseline, median 25(OH)D concentration for the whole study population was 13 nmol/L (range, 0.0–15.0 nmol/L). At the end of the study, median 25(OH)D concentration for the whole study population was 6.5 nmol/L (0.0–15.0 nmol/L), for the control group was 3 nmol/L (0.0–8.0 nmol/L) and for the UVB group was 7.5 nmol/L (6.0–11.0 nmol/L). There was a statistically significant 50% reduction in 25(OH)D concentrations from the baseline to the final sampling period for the overall population, but no differences by group, age, or sex. The addition of a UVB bulb for 6 months to the enclosures of cockatiels did not increase their serum 25(OH)D concentrations. There was an unexplained decrease in both groups when comparing Day 0 to the Day 180 sampling period. The 50% attenuation in the UVB lighting group, although not statistically significant, may be clinically relevant and deserves further investigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
