Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic created a historic, global disruption in the labor market. In the short term, the labor force participation rate dropped precipitously as workers were laid off or furloughed, especially in sectors that were most affected by social distancing protocols, such as hospitality, travel and leisure, and retail (Lund et al., 2021). While the labor market has rebounded since 2020, the pandemic has reshaped the future of work for America. Meanwhile, community and technical colleges around the country are responding to low levels of student enrollment after the pandemic (Barrington, 2022). These institutions are often tasked with filling the skills gap in their local economies through career and technical education (CTE) programs. Furthermore, community and technical colleges are increasingly being held accountable, through state and federal policy, for ensuring that the programs and credentials that they offer are relevant to the skills demanded by the labor market. This brief describes findings from a statewide survey in Florida that sheds light on how community and technical colleges are examining student and economic data, creating processes for program review and market alignment, engaging industries and businesses, and supporting student success in CTE after the pandemic. 16. Lived Experiences of Filipino Male Occupational Therapy Students

Abstract

The historical dominance of women working in occupational therapy, coupled with the underrepresentation of males in the field globally, creates a need to investigate the experiences of male students in occupational therapy programs. In the context of the Philippines, where women make up 74.72% of the occupational therapy workforce, this study aims to address the following scaffolding problem by exploring the experiences and motivations of male students in Philippine occupational therapy programs. This study seeks to shed light on the factors influencing their educational journey and contribute to a better understanding of gender dynamics within the field. A qualitative design was used. Nine male occupational therapy students from various universities across the Philippines completed a survey questionnaire developed by the authors and attended a focus group discussion. Qualitative data was recorded and analyzed using thematic analysis. Upon analysis, five themes emerged: (1) Means and Not the End, (2) Rapport and Communication, (3) Society and Stereotyping, (4) Introspection of Male Students, and (5) Furtherance of Gender Inclusivity. The findings suggest that there are roles and expectations specific to male occupational therapy students within the Philippines, which may differ to some extent from those of their female counterparts. The participants experienced particular challenges and opportunities due to their gender. These results may be used to understand the existing gender disparity still present in different occupational therapy workforces.

17. Bridging the Gap between Theory and Practice: The Research Productivity and Utilization of Research Outcomes among Secondary Mathematics Teachers

Abstract

Mathematics teaching is viewed as an inquiry process and a powerful context and practice for professional development with the goal of providing greater access, challenge, and support for every learner. This paper stems from a larger research project that investigates the research productivity and processes of integrating research in the curriculum delivery of high school mathematics. This descriptive work through survey, interview and documentary analysis involved 211 high school mathematics teachers in the quantitative component and four purposively selected in the qualitative section. Findings show that mathematics teachers demonstrate suboptimal level of research productivity but have shown promising potential for growth. Research is employed in various layers but typically as a mean to revisit teaching practices, as a basis of a teaching strategy, as a source of another research, and as a motivation for a research-oriented mindset. Research is strongly linked to the mathematics teaching and learning process and thus, have policy implications on nurturing and sustaining mathematics teacher-researchers. It is recommended to develop professional development plans that enhances the productivity and incorporation of research in the teaching-learning process.

19. Intelligent Deep-Learning Tutoring System to Assist Instructors in Programming Courses

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) in programming teaching is something that still has to be explored, since in this area assessment tools that allow grading the students work are the most common ones, but there are not many tools aimed toward providing feedback to the students in the process of creating their program. In this work a small sized AI-based intelligent tutor that answers students programming questions and provides them with examples is presented. AI is becoming more and more popular as time passes, allowing to perform tasks automatically in a way that could not be done before. From predictions to customization, AI is being used in many areas, not being educational environments outside this situation. AI is being used in educational settings to customize contents or to provide personalized feedback to the students, among others. In this scenario, The tool has been tested by university students at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos during the course Programming Fundamentals in the first course of their Biomedical Engineering degree to evaluate if it helps the students in the process of learning programming skills. One of the main goals was to provide guidance to the students without needing the instructor to be physically by their side. Even if the tool is still in its preliminary phase, it helped the students with their questions, providing accurate answers and examples. The students were able to use the intelligent tutor easily and they thought that it could be a useful tool to use in other courses.

20. Exploring Reddit Conversations about Mental Health Difficulties among College Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

Objective: We aimed to explore conversations about mental health difficulties by Reddit users who posted within college subreddits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants: Data were collected from the subreddits of 22 California campuses, representing 113,579 anonymous members. Using the following search terms, we retrieved 577 posts (i.e., 268 original posts and 309 replies): COVID, Coronavirus, Quarantine, Pandemic, Anxiety, Anxious, Depressed, Depression, Overwhelmed, Stress, and Stressed. Methods: We used inductive, thematic data analysis to explore themes within posts and replies dated from 3/16/2020 to 3/16/2021. Results: We identified the following themes: 1) the COVID-19 pandemic has negatively impacted engagement with learning; 2) remote learning has exacerbated students' mental health difficulties; and 3) students provide and receive social support online. Conclusions: These findings have implications that are particularly relevant as campuses are faced with continuous decisions related to repopulation.

Research suggests that high-quality work-based learning (WBL) can be a promising approach to solving the leaky pipeline for undertapped demographic groups such as women and students of color, including for STEM fields Community colleges are especially important vehicles for WBL due to their diverse student populations and their partnerships with employers and industries. This study explores participation in STEM WBL in Florida community colleges. We focus on internships and cooperative education courses and participation rates among STEM and non-STEM WBL as well as across different demographic groups.

45. Toward an Institutional Analytics Agenda for Addressing Student Dropout in Higher Education: An Academic Stakeholders' Perspective

Abstract

Although the number of students in higher education institutions (HEIs) has increased over the past two decades, it is far from assured that all students will gain an academic degree. To that end, institutional analytics (IA) can offer insights to support strategic planning with the aim of reducing dropout and therefore of minimizing its negative impact (e.g., on students, academic stakeholders, and institutions). However, it is not clear how institutional stakeholders can integrate IA in their practice to overcome academic-related issues and to offer support to students who struggle to achieve their academic goals. To address this gap, we conducted focus groups with 13 institutional stakeholders of an Estonian university. By analyzing the focus group data, we identified three main categories of factors influencing dropout from the perspective of institutional stakeholders: (1) institutional experience, (2) educational goals, and (3) personal aspects. We discuss our findings from an institutional perspective with the aim of reflecting on institutional processes, organizational structures, and facilitatory roles in the context of dropout in higher education (HE). We argue that IA can provide insights into students' institutional experience, educational goals, and personal aspects to further support decision-making on the institutional level. We envision our findings contributing to a participatory agenda for the design, implementation, and integration of IA solutions focusing on addressing dropout in HE.

50. A Real-Time Predictive Model for Identifying Course Dropout in Online Higher Education

Abstract

Course dropout is a concern in online higher education, mainly in first-year courses when different factors negatively influence the learners' engagement leading to an unsuccessful outcome or even dropping out from the university. The early identification of such potential at-risk learners is the key to intervening and trying to help them before they decide to drop out. This article focuses on this challenging problem by providing a predictive dropout model with distinctive characteristics from previous approaches. First, the identification is in real time by providing a daily dropout prediction. Second, a temporal window of variable size is defined to evaluate the likelihood of being a dropout learner at the activity level. Such contributions will serve as a basis for designing and applying intervention mechanisms to reverse the course dropout at-risk situation. The predictive model and the temporal window have been evaluated on data from an authentic online learning setting in two first-year undergraduate courses. We show the accuracy of correctly identifying at-risk learners within activities and the model performance to detect actual course dropout learners.
