Pinnotheres pisum (Linnaeus, 1767) is one of the pinnotherid crab species with the highest number of reported bivalve hosts. Here we first report this species living in the bivalve Glossus humanus (Linnaeus, 1758), and provide an update on P. pisum symbiotic associations (i.e., known hosts), reaching up to 34 taxa. Partial sequences of the mitochondrial gene cytochrome c oxidase subunit I were first obtained from P. pisum and the G. humanus host from the Mediterranean Sea, confirming conspecificity with specimens from the Atlantic Ocean of the same species.

The state of marine systems subject to natural or anthropogenic impacts can be generally summarized by suites of ecological indicators carefully selected to avoid redundancy. Length-based indicators capture the status of fish community structure, fulfilling the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) requirement for Descriptor 3 (status of commercial fish species). Although the MSFD recommends the development of regional indicators, a comparison among alternative length-based indicators is so far missing for the Mediterranean Sea. Using principal component analysis and dynamic factor analysis, we identified the most effective subset of length-based indicators, whether or not based on maximum length. Indicator trends and time series of fishing effort and environmental variables are also compared in order to highlight the individual and combined capability of indicators to track system changes across geographical sub-areas. Two indicators, typical length and mean maximum length, constitute the smallest set of non-redundant indicators, capturing together 87.45% of variability. Only in combination can these indicators disentangle changes in the fish community composition from modifications of size structure. Our study supports the inclusion of typical length among the regional MSFD Descriptor 3 indicators for the Mediterranean Sea. Finally, we show dissimilarity between the western and eastern-central Mediterranean, suggesting that there are sub-regional differences in stressors and community responses., Generalmente, el estado de los sistemas marinos sujetos a impactos naturales o antropogénicos puede ser resumido mediante un conjunto de indicadores ecológicos, cuidadosamente seleccionados para evitar la redundancia. Las tendencias de los indicadores y las series temporales del esfuerzo de pesca y las variables ambientales también son comparadas para resaltar la capacidad individual y combinada de los indicadores para detectar los cambios del sistema a través de las subáreas geográficas. Dos indicadores, Longitud Típica (TyL) y Longitud Máxima Media (MML), constituyen el conjunto más pequeño de indicadores no redundantes, captando juntos el 87.45% de variabilidad. Solo si se combinan, estos indicadores pueden discernir entre los cambios en la composición de la comunidad de peces y las modificaciones de la estructura de tallas. Nuestro estudio respalda la inclusión de TyL entre los indicadores regionales del descriptor 3 de MSFD para el mar Mediterráneo. Finalmente, mostramos diferencias entre el Mediterráneo occidental y el Mediterráneo centraloriental que sugieren diferencias subregionales en cuanto a factores impactantes y las respuestas de la comunidad.

The uncertainty in age estimation by otolith reading may be at the root of the large variability in red mullet (Mullus barbatus) growth models in the Mediterranean. In the MEDITS survey, red mullet age data are produced following the same sampling protocol and otolith reading methodology. However, ageing is assigned using different interpretation schemes, including variations in theoretical birthdate and number of false rings considered, in addition to differences in the experience level of readers. The present work analysed the influence of these variations and the geographical location of sampling on red mullet ageing using a multivariate approach (principal component analysis). Reader experience was the most important parameter correlated with the variability. The number of rings considered false showed a significant effect on the variability in the first age groups but had less influence on the older ones. The effect of the theoretical birthdate was low in all age groups. Geographical location had a significant influence, with longitude showing greater effects than latitude. In light of these results, workshops, exchanges and the adoption of a common ageing protocol based on age validation studies are considered fundamental tools for improving precision in red mullet ageing., La incertidumbre en la estimación de la edad mediante la lectura de otolitos puede ser la principal causa detrás de la gran variabilidad existente en los modelos de crecimiento del salmonete (Mullus barbatus) en el Mediterráneo. En la campaña MEDITS, los datos de edad del salmonete se generan siguiendo el mismo protocolo de muestreo y metodología de lectura de otolitos, aunque la asignación de la edad se lleva a cabo usando distintos esquemas para la interpretación de las lecturas, incluyendo variaciones en la fecha teórica de nacimiento y en el número de anillos considerados falsos, además de las diferencias existentes en cuanto al nivel de experiencia de los lectores. En este trabajo, la influencia de las variaciones en los esquemas de interpretación, el nivel de experiencia de los lectores, y la localización geográfica de las muestras, sobre la determinación de la edad en el salmonete se analiza mediante una aproximación multivariante (Análisis de Componentes Principales). La experiencia de los lectores fue el parámetro más correlacionado con la variabilidad. El número de anillos considerados falsos mostró un efecto significativo sobre la variabilidad de los primeros grupos de edad, mientras que su influencia sobre los más viejos fue menor. El efecto de la fecha teórica de nacimiento tuvo poca importancia en todos los grupos de edad. La localización geográfica tuvo una influencia significativa, con la longitud mostrando mayores efectos que la latitud. Teniendo en cuenta estos resultados, los grupos de trabajo e intercambios de otolitos así como la adopción de un protocolo de asignación de edad común basado en estudios de validación de edad, se consideran herramientas fundamentales para mejorar la precisión en la determinación de la edad del salmonete.

Many deep‐water fish populations, being k‐selected species, have little resilience to overexploitation and may be at serious risk of depletion as a consequence. Sea warming represents an additional threat. In this study, the condition, or health, of several populations of common ling (Molva molva), blue ling (M. dypterygia) and Mediterranean or Spanish ling (M. macrophthalma) inhabiting different areas in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean was evaluated, in order to shed light on the challenges these deep water species are facing in the context of fishing activity and a warming climate. The data on the condition of Molva populations which we analyze here has been complemented with data on abundance and, for the southernmost species (Mediterranean ling), with two other health indicators (parasitism and hepatosomatic index). Despite some exceptions (e.g., common ling in Icelandic waters), this study shows that the condition of many populations of Molva species in the Northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea has worsened, a trend which, in recent decades, has usually been found to be accompanied by a decline in their abundance. In addition, the poor health status of most of the populations of common ling, blue ling and Mediterranean ling considered in this analysis points to a lower sustainability of these populations in the future. Overall, the health status and abundance of Molva populations in the Northeastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean suggest that only some populations located in the north Atlantic may be able to rebuild, whereas the populations in southern North Atlantic and the Mediterranean, which are probably most at risk from sea warming, are facing serious difficulties in doing so. In the context of fisheries and global warming, our results strongly indicate that management bodies need to consider the health status of many of the populations of Molva species, particularly in southern European waters, before implementing their decisions., Sí

In this study we investigated the spatio-temporal distribution of gurnards (8 species of Triglidae and one species of Peristediidae) in the northern Mediterranean Sea using 22 years of MEDITS bottom trawl survey data (1994-2015). Gurnards showed significant differences in terms of abundance, dominance and composition among geographical sub-areas and ecoregions, with the highest relative biomass (BIy) being found in Malta, eastern Corsica, the Balearic Islands and the eastern Ionian Sea. The lowest gurnards BIy were observed in the highly exploited areas of the western Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea, where the largest number of species with a negative linear trend in BIy was also found. The temporal trends in species abundances highlighted a general decrease for the coastal species (C. lucerna, C. lastoviza, C. obscurus) as compared with the species inhabiting the deep continental shelf and slope (T. lyra, P. cataphractum). The results provide for the first time an overview of the spatiotemporal trend in the abundance of gurnards over the wide spatial scale of the northern Mediterranean Sea, also suggesting the possible use of these species as indicators for monitoring the impact of fishing pressure on demersal fish assemblages., En este estudio hemos investigado la distribución espacio-temporal de los gurnardos (8 especies de Triglidae y 1 especie de Peristediidae) en el norte del Mediterráneo usando 22 años de datos de la campaña de pesca de arrastre ME DITS (1994-2015). Los gurnardos mostraron diferencias significativas en la abundancia, dominancia y composición entre las distintas sub-areas geográficas (GSAs) y las ecoregiones, encontrándose las mayores biomasas relativas (BIy) en Malta, el este de Córcega, las Islas Baleares y el oeste del mar Jónico. Por otro lado, los menores valores de BIy fueron observados en las áreas más explotadas del oeste del Mediterráneo y del Mar Adriático, donde también se observó el mayor número de especies con una tendencia lineal negativa en relación a BIy. La tendencia temporal en la abundancia de especies evidenció una disminución general en las especies costeras (C. lucerna, C. lastoviza, C. obscurus) respecto a las especies que habitan la profunda plataforma y pendiente continentales (T. lyra, P. cataphractum). Los resultados proporcionan por primera vez una visión general de las tendencias espacio-temporales en la abundancia de los gurnardos en la amplia escala espacial del norte del Mediterráneo, sugiriendo también la posibilidad de usar estas especies como indicadores para monitorear el impacto de la presión de pesca sobre los ensamblajes de peces demersales.

The high species richness, coupled with high proportion of endemism, makes the Mediterranean one of the world’s ‘biodiversity hotspots’. However, the continuous increase in fisheries in the last few decades has led to the overexploitation of their main commercial stocks. Using fishery-independent data collected under the framework of the MEDITS trawl surveys carried out over the last 20 years, we study the demersal fish diversity pattern in the Mediterranean at a large spatial and temporal scale to determine whether it is being affected by the general fishing overexploitation of the demersal resources. The detected diversity trends are compared with the spatio-temporal variation in bottom trawl fishing effort in the Mediterranean. Our results show a stability and even recovery of demersal fish diversity in the Mediterranean together with higher diversity values on the continental shelves of the Balearic Islands, Sardinia, Sicily and the Aegean Sea. At large temporal and spatial scales, the high diversity of demersal assemblages in the Mediterranean is associated with a reduction in bottom trawl fishing effort. The inclusion of species other than target ones through diversity indices is important in the implementation of an ecosystem-based fisheries management., Debido a su alta riqueza específica y su gran proporción de organismos endémicos, el Mediterráneo es considerado un punto caliente de biodiversidad. No obstante el continuo crecimiento de las pesquerías en las últimas décadas ha desembocado en una sobrexplotación de sus principales stocks comerciales. A través de datos independientes de las pesquerías recogidos en el marco de las campañas MEDITS desarrolladas durante las dos últimas décadas se ha estudiado el patrón de diversidad de peces demersales en el Mediterráneo a través de largas escalas temporales y espaciales para evaluar si este patrón se ve afectado por el estado general de sobrexplotación de sus recursos demersales. A continuación las tendencias detectadas en la diversidad han sido comparadas a la variación espacio-temporal del esfuerzo de la pesca de arrastre a través del Mediterráneo. Nuestros resultados muestran una estabilidad e incluso recuperación de la diversidad de peces demersales en el Mediterráneo junto a valores altos de diversidad en las plataformas continentales de las Islas Baleares, Cerdeña, Sicília y el mar Egeo. La alta diversidad de las asociaciones de peces demersales a escala tanto espacial como temporal está asociada a una reducción del esfuerzo pesquero. La inclusión de especies distintas a las objetivo a través de índices de diversidad es relevante en la implementación de la aproximación ecosistémica a la gestión de las pesquerías.

A new approach to recruitment overfishing diagnosis is presented. We hypothesize that condition of recruits should increase when recruitment failures are caused by fishing activity. This would be a consequence of the increase in trophic resource availability, because the population is smaller than that which the ecosystem could support. Temporal series of hake recruit condition were calculated from MEDITS survey data collected in Mediterranean geographical sub-areas (GSAs) 1, 6, 17 and 19 from 1994 to 2015. Multiple linear regressions were used to analyse the relationship between mean annual condition and abundance of recruits and climatic indices in each GSA. Significant correlations were only detected in GSA 6, where 69% of condition variability was explained by the negative correlation with recruit abundance, and with two climatic indices, the Western Mediterranean Oscillation and the standardized air temperature anomaly at surface from the Gulf of Lions. Despite the differences in recruit abundance among GSAs, their mean annual condition oscillated around the same basal value during most of the time series, pointing to density-dependent mortality rates as an important mechanism stabilizing hake recruitment to levels close to the carrying capacity when populations do not suffer recruitment overfishing. This pattern changed when the decreasing recruit abundance trend drove GSA 6 condition values persistently above those of the rest of the GSAs. According to our hypothesis, hake in GSA 6 is in recruitment overfishing., Este trabajo presenta una nueva aproximación al diagnóstico de la sobrepesca de reclutamiento. Nuestra hipótesis consiste en que la condición de los reclutas debe aumentar cuando suceden fallos en el reclutamiento debidos a la actividad pesquera. Esto sería una consecuencia del incremento en la disponibilidad de recursos tróficos debido a que la población es más reducida que la que el ecosistema podría soportar. Se calcularon series temporales de condición de reclutas de merluza a partir de datos recogidos en las campañas MEDITS en las sub-áreas geográficas (GSAs) 1, 6, 17 y 19 entre los años 1994 y 2015. Se utilizó la regresión lineal múltiple para analizar la relación entre la condición media anual y la abundancia de reclutas e índices climáticos en cada GSA. Solo se detectaron correlaciones significativas en la GSA 6, dónde el 69% de la variabilidad en la condición se explica por la correlación negativa con la abundancia de reclutas, y con dos índices climáticos, la Oscilación del Mediterráneo Occidental y la anomalía estandarizada de la temperatura del aire en superficie en el Golfo de León. A pesar de las diferencias en la abundancia de reclutas entre GSAs, su condición anual media osciló alrededor de un mismo valor basal durante la mayor parte de la serie temporal, sugiriendo que las tasas de mortalidad denso-dependiente son un mecanismo importante para la estabilización del reclutamiento de merluza en niveles próximos a la capacidad de carga cuando las poblaciones no sufren sobrepesca de reclutamiento. Este patrón cambió cuando la tendencia decreciente de la abundancia de reclutas elevó los valores de condición en la GSA 6 por encima de los del resto de GSAs de forma persistente. De acuerdo con nuestra hipótesis, la merluza de la GSA 6 se encuentra en sobrepesca de reclutamiento.

The holothurian Parastichopus tremulus, a species only know from the north-eastern Atlantic, is reported for the first time from the Mediterranean Sea. Five individuals of the species were collected in the vicinity of the Seco de los Olivos sea mount in May 2017 from a bottom trawl sample carried out during the MEDITS trawl survey. Scanning Electron Microscope images of body wall ossicles are supplied to support species identification. Connectivity between Atlantic and Mediterranean populations of P. tremulus is suggested due to the existence of a nearby Atlantic population in the Gulf of Cádiz and the documented presence of abundant holothuroid larvae in the anticyclonic gyre which originates in the Atlantic current entering the Mediterranean, near the Strait of Gibraltar, Premier signalement du concombre de mer Parastichopus tremulus (Gunnerus, 1767) (Echinodermata : Aspidochirotida) en Méditerranée (Mer d’Alboran, Méditerranée occidentale). Des photographies au microscope électronique à balayage d’osselets de la paroi du corps sont fournies pour valider l’identification de l’espèce. Protogrammus alboranensis n. sp. is described on the basis of four specimens from the Alboran Sea, western Mediterranean Sea. It is characterized within the genus Protogrammus by a total of nine unbranched rays on the second dorsal fin, eight unbranched rays on the anal fin, a very small preopercular spine with an upcurved main tip and one point on the dorsal margin, which is lacking an antrorse spine at the base, the first and second spines of the first dorsal fin filamentous and much longer than the first ray of the second dorsal fin in males, the tip of the last ray of the second dorsal fin reaching beyond the caudal fin base in males, and the anal fin distally black in the males (translucent in females). A key to the species of Protogrammus is presented; the zoogeography of the species is discussed., En base a cuatro individuos recolectados en el mar de Alborán, mar Mediterráneo occidental, se describe Protogrammus alboranensis n. sp. Esta especie se caracteriza dentro del género Protogrammus por poseer un total de 9 radios no ramificados en la segunda aleta dorsal, 8 radios no ramificados en la aleta anal, una espina preopercular muy pequeña que carece de espina antrorsa en la base y que posee una punta principal curvada hacia arriba y otra en el margen dorsal, la primera y segunda espinas de la primera aleta dorsal son filamentosas y mucho más largas que el primer radio de la segunda aleta dorsal en el macho, la punta del último radio de la segunda aleta dorsal alcanza más allá de la base de la aleta caudal en el macho, y la aleta anal presenta un margen oscuro en machos (traslúcido en hembras). Se presenta una clave para las especies del género Protogrammus y se discute sobre su zoogeografía.
