Search

Quasar feedback may regulate the growth of supermassive black holes, quench coeval star formation, and impact galaxy morphology and the circumgalactic medium. However, direct evidence for quasar feedback in action at the epoch of peak black hole accretion at z ~ 2 remains elusive. A good case in point is the z = 1.6 quasar WISEA J100211.29+013706.7 (XID 2028) where past analyses of the same ground-based data have come to different conclusions. Here we revisit this object with the integral field unit of the Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) as part of Early Release Science program Q3D. The excellent angular resolution and sensitivity of the JWST data reveal new morphological and kinematic sub-structures in the outflowing gas plume. An analysis of the emission line ratios indicates that photoionization by the central quasar dominates the ionization state of the gas with no obvious sign for a major contribution from hot young stars anywhere in the host galaxy. Rest-frame near-ultraviolet emission aligned along the wide-angle cone of outflowing gas is interpreted as a scattering cone. The outflow has cleared a channel in the dusty host galaxy through which some of the quasar ionizing radiation is able to escape and heat the surrounding interstellar and circumgalactic media. The warm ionized outflow is not powerful enough to impact the host galaxy via mechanical feedback, but radiative feedback by the AGN, aided by the outflow, may help explain the unusually small molecular gas mass fraction in the galaxy host., 17 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. Spitzer mid-infrared spectral maps of the nearby galaxy M58 reveal that the physical conditions of the interstellar medium in molecular gas and star-forming regions are impacted by AGN feedback. In particular, the strong H2 extended emission in this galaxy appears to trace a large mass of jet-shocked molecular gas. We developed a flexible spectral-cube fitting tool to fit the infrared spectra of galaxies. We are using this tool to search for extended H2 emission in nearby galaxies so we can study the effects of AGN feedback on molecular gas and how this affects the star formation process in galaxy bulges.

International audience; We present multiple lines of evidence that gas in the Taffy galaxy system (UGC 12914/5) is in a highly disturbed state as a result of a recent head-on collision between these two gas-rich galaxies. Building on evidence of large quantities of warm molecular hydrogen in the Taffy bridge, and evidence of boosted [CII] emission from Herschel, we observed the Taffy system with ALMA in the CO 2-1 and 3-2 lines, and with the McDonald Observatory VIRUS-P IFU system in the visible light. Strong emission lines were detected from the galaxies and in the bridge with VIRUS-P, showing two dominant velocity components over much of the bridge and parts of both galaxies. We made a detailed analysis of the excitation properties of the ionized gas, finding that a significant amount of the high-velocity component of the bridge gas was consistent with shocks with velocities of 200-300 km/s. Two distinct filaments of ionized gas were found between the galaxies. Our ALMA observations also showed that the dense molecular gas is also highly disturbed. The most remarkable aspect of the ALMA observations is the discovery of a tangled web of molecular filaments in the bridge. The individual filaments are typically 1 kpc in length, are almost unresolved at 60 pc resolution in the other dimension. They also contain clumps that have broad line widths of 80-150 km/s. Although some of the filaments are associated with a prominent extragalactic star formation region located in the bridge, most of the filaments show little obvious sign of star formation despite their apparently high molecular surface densities. Given their high surface densities, it is not clear why the filaments are not forming stars, unless they are magnetically supported. One possibility is that they represent transient density enhancements in a supersonic turbulent multi-phase fluid created in the aftermath of the high-speed collision.

Galaxy formation depends on a complex interplay between gravitational collapse, gas accretion, merging, and feedback processes. Yet, after many decades of investigation, these concepts are poorly understood. This paper presents the argument that warm H$_2$ can be used as a tool to unlock some of these mysteries. Turbulence, shocks and outflows, driven by star formation, AGN activity or inflows, may prevent the rapid buildup of star formation in galaxies. Central to our understanding of how gas is converted into stars is the process by which gas can dissipate its mechanical energy through turbulence and shocks in order to cool. H$_2$ lines provide direct quantitative measurements of kinetic energy dissipation in molecular gas in galaxies throughout the Universe. Based on the detection of very powerful H$_2$ lines from z = 2 galaxies and proto-clusters at the detection limits of {\it Spitzer}, we are confident that future far-IR and UV H$_2$ observations will provide a wealth of new information and insight into galaxy evolution to high-z. MatchEx goes beyond traditional position-based cross-matching algorithms by using other available data together with expert logic to determine which candidate match is the best. Furthermore, the local background density of sources is used to determine and minimize the false-positive match rate and to estimate match completeness. The logical outcome and statistical probability of each match decision is stored in the database, and may be used to tune the algorithm and adjust match parameter thresholds. For our first production run, we cross-matched the GALEX All Sky Survey Catalog (GASC), containing nearly 40 million NUV-detected sources, against a directory of 180 million objects in NED. Candidate matches were identified for each GASC source within a 7.5 arcsecond radius. These candidates were filtered on position-based matching probability, and on other criteria including object type and object name. We estimate a match completeness of 97.6% and a match accuracy of 99.75%. MatchEx is being used to cross-match over 2 billion catalog sources to NED, including the Spitzer Source List, the 2MASS Point-Source Catalog, AllWISE, and SDSS DR 10. We will also extend MatchEx to handle more heterogenous datasets federated from smaller catalogs through NED's literature pipeline.

As a step toward a comprehensive overview of the infrared diagnostics of the central engines and host galaxies of quasars at low redshift, we present Spitzer Space Telescope spectroscopic (5-40 {\mu}m) and photometric (24, 70 and 160 {\mu}m) measurements of all Palomar-Green (PG) quasars at z < 0.5 and 2MASS quasars at z < 0.3. We supplement these data with Herschel measurements at 160 {\mu}m. The sample is composed of 87 optically selected PG quasars and 52 near-IR selected 2MASS quasars. Here we present the data, measure the prominent spectral features, and separate emission due to star formation from that emitted by the dusty circumnuclear torus. We find that the mid-IR (5-30 {\mu}m) spectral shape for the torus is largely independent of quasar IR luminosity with scatter in the SED shape of ~ 0.2 dex. Except for the silicate features, no large difference is observed between PG (unobscured - silicate emission) and 2MASS (obscured - silicate absorption) quasars. Only mild silicate features are observed in both cases. When in emission, the peak wavelength of the silicate feature tends to be longer than 9.7 {\mu}m, possibly indicating effects on grain properties near the AGN. The IR color is shown to correlate with the equivalent width of the aromatic features, indicating that the slope of the quasar mid- to far-IR SED is to first order driven by the fraction of radiation from star formation in the IR bands., Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures. The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission, launched on 2012 June 13, is the first focusing high-energy X-ray telescope in orbit. NuSTAR operates in the band from 3 to 79 keV, extending the sensitivity of focusing far beyond the ~10 keV high-energy cutoff achieved by all previous X-ray satellites. The inherently low background associated with concentrating the X-ray light enables NuSTAR to probe the hard X-ray sky with a more than 100-fold improvement in sensitivity over the collimated or coded mask instruments that have operated in this bandpass. Using its unprecedented combination of sensitivity and spatial and spectral resolution, NuSTAR will pursue five primary scientific objectives: (1) probe obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity out to the peak epoch of galaxy assembly in the universe (at z ≾ 2) by surveying selected regions of the sky; (2) study the population of hard X-ray-emitting compact objects in the Galaxy by mapping the central regions of the Milky Way; (3) study the non-thermal radiation in young supernova remnants, both the hard X-ray continuum and the emission from the radioactive element ^(44)Ti; (4) observe blazars contemporaneously with ground-based radio, optical, and TeV telescopes, as well as with Fermi and Swift, to constrain the structure of AGN jets; and (5) observe line and continuum emission from core-collapse supernovae in the Local Group, and from nearby Type Ia events, to constrain explosion models. During its baseline two-year mission, NuSTAR will also undertake a broad program of targeted observations. The observatory consists of two co-aligned grazing-incidence X-ray telescopes pointed at celestial targets by a three-axis stabilized spacecraft. Deployed into a 600 km, near-circular, 6° inclination orbit, the observatory has now completed commissioning, and is performing consistent with pre-launch expectations. NuSTAR is now executing its primary science mission, and with an expected orbit lifetime of 10 yr, we anticipate proposing a guest investigator program, to begin in late 2014.

We present the mid-infrared spectra of seven of the most powerful radio-galaxies known to exist at 1.5 < z < 2.6. The radio emission of these sources is dominated by the AGN with 500 MHz luminosities in the range 10^27.8 - 10^29.1 W/Hz. The AGN signature is clearly evident in the mid-infrared spectra, however, we also detect polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emission, indicative of prodigious star formation at a rate of up to ~1000 Msun/yr. Interestingly, we observe no significant correlation between AGN power and star formation in the host galaxy. We also find most of these radio galaxies to have weak 9.7 um silicate absorption features (tau_{9.7 um} < 0.8) which implies that their mid-IR obscuration is predominantly due to the dusty torus that surrounds the central engine, rather than the host galaxy. The tori are likely to have an inhomogeneous distribution with the obscuring structure consisting of individual clouds. We estimate that these radio galaxies have already formed the bulk of their stellar mass and appear to lie at a stage in their evolution where the obscured AGN dominates the energy output of the system but star formation is also prevalent., 16 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Chandra X-ray observations of the high redshift (z = 1.532) radio-loud quasar 3C 270.1 in 2008 February show the nucleus to have a power-law spectrum, Γ = 1.66 ± 0.08, typical of a radio-loud quasar, and a marginally detected Fe Kα emission line. The data also reveal extended X-ray emission, about half of which is associated with the radio emission from this source. The southern emission is co-spatial with the radio lobe and peaks at the position of the double radio hot spot. Modeling this hot spot, including Spitzer upper limits, rules out synchrotron emission from a single power-law population of electrons, favoring inverse Compton emission with a field of ~11 nT, roughly a third of the equipartition value. The northern emission is concentrated close to the location of a 40° bend where the radio jet is presumed to encounter an external medium. It can be explained by inverse Compton emission involving cosmic microwave background photons with a field of ~3 nT, a factor of 7-10 below the equipartition value. The remaining, more diffuse X-ray emission is harder (HR = –0.09 ± 0.22). With only 22.8 ± 5.6 counts, the spectral form cannot be constrained. Assuming thermal emission with a temperature of 4 keV yields an estimate for the luminosity of 1.8× 10^(44) erg s^(–1), consistent with the luminosity-temperature relation of lower-redshift clusters. However, deeper Chandra X-ray observations are required to delineate the spatial distribution and better constrain the spectrum of the diffuse emission to verify that we have detected X-ray emission from a high-redshift cluster.

The Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S^4G) is an Exploration Science Legacy Program approved for the Spitzer post–cryogenic mission. It is a volume-, magnitude-, and size-limited (d < 40 Mpc, |b|> 30°,m_(Bcorr) < 15:5, and D_(25) > 1') survey of 2331 galaxies using the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) at 3.6 and 4.5 μm. Each galaxy is observed for 240 s and mapped to ≥ 1:5 × D_(25). The final mosaicked images have a typical 1 σ rms noise level of 0.0072 and 0:0093 MJy sr^-1 at 3.6 and 4.5 μm, respectively. Our azimuthally averaged surface brightness profile typically traces isophotes at μ_(3.6μm (AB)(1σ) ~ 27 mag arcsec^(-2), equivalent to a stellar mass surface density of ~1 M_⊙pc^(-2). S^4G thus provides an unprecedented data set for the study of the distribution of mass and stellar structures in the local universe. This large, unbiased, and extremely deep sample of all Hubble types from dwarfs to spirals to ellipticals will allow for detailed structural studies, not only as a function of stellar mass, but also as a function of the local environment. The data from this survey will serve as a vital testbed for cosmological simulations predicting the stellar mass properties of present-day galaxies. This article introduces the survey and describes the sample selection, the significance of the 3.6 and 4.5 μm bands for this study, and the data collection and survey strategies. We describe the S^4G data analysis pipeline and present measurements for a first set of galaxies, observed in both the cryogenic and warm mission phases of Spitzer. For every galaxy we tabulate the galaxy diameter, position angle, axial ratio, inclination at μ_(3.6μm)(AB) = 25:5, and 26:5 mag arcsec^(-2) (equivalent to ≈μ_B(AB) = 27:2 and 28:2 mag arcsec^(-2), respectively). These measurements will form the initial S^4G catalog of galaxy properties. We also measure the total magnitude and the azimuthally averaged radial profiles of ellipticity, position angle, surface brightness, and color. Finally, using the galaxy-fitting code GALFIT, we deconstruct each galaxy into its main constituent stellar components: the bulge/spheroid, disk, bar, and nuclear point source, where necessary. Together, these data products will provide a comprehensive and definitive catalog of stellar structures, mass, and properties of galaxies in the nearby universe and will enable a variety of scientific investigations, some of which are highlighted in this introductory S^4G survey paper.

We present Spitzer IRS observations of a complete sample of 57 SDSS type-1 quasars at z~1. Aromatic features at 6.2 and/or 7.7 um are detected in about half of the sample and show profiles similar to those seen in normal galaxies at both low- and high-redshift, indicating a star-formation origin for the features. Based on the ratio of aromatic to star-formation IR (SFIR) luminosities for normal star-forming galaxies at z~1, we have constructed the SFIR luminosity function (LF) of z~1 quasars. As we found earlier for low-redshift PG quasars, these z~1 quasars show a flatter SFIR LF than do z~1 field galaxies, implying the quasar host galaxy population has on average a higher SFR than the field galaxies do. As measured from their SFIR LF, individual quasar hosts have on average LIRG-level SFRs, which mainly arise in the circumnuclear regions. By comparing with similar measurements of low-redshift PG quasars, we find that the comoving SFIR luminosity density in quasar hosts shows a much larger increase with redshift than that in field galaxies. The behavior is consistent with pure density evolution since the average SFR and the average SFR/BH-accretion-rate in quasar hosts show little evolution with redshift. For individual quasars, we have found a correlation between the aromatic-based SFR and the luminosity of the nuclear radiation, consistent with predictions of some theoretical models. We propose that type 1 quasars reside in a distinct galaxy population that shows elliptical morphology but that harbors a significant fraction of intermediate-age stars and is experiencing intense circumnuclear star formation., Accepted for publication in ApJ, 20 pages, 11 figures

We present low-resolution ultraviolet spectra of 14 low redshift (z1.4 Large Bright Quasar samples. By design, our objects sample luminosities in between these two surveys, and our four absorbed objects are consistent with the v ~ L^0.62 relation derived by Laor & Brandt (2002). Another quasar, HE0441-2826, contains extremely weak emission lines and our spectrum is consistent with a simple power-law continuum. The quasar is radio-loud, but has a steep spectral index and a lobe-dominated morphology, which argues against it being a blazar. The unusual spectrum of this quasar resembles the spectra of the quasars PG1407+265, SDSSJ1136+0242, and PKS1004+13 for which several possible explanations have been entertained., Uses aastex.cls, 21 pages in preprint mode, including 6 figures and 2 tables; accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal (projected vol 133)

A new optimal-extraction technique has been developed for deriving point-source spectra from data taken by the Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) on-board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The new technique gives improvements of up to a factor of two in the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) for faint (< 10 mJy) sources, corresponding to an effective quadrupling of the exposure time. Regular extraction consists of an even-weighted summing of pixel values at the same wavelength. Optimal extraction weights each pixel by its S/N, estimated using the spatial profile of a bright calibration star and data uncertainties. Additionally, the optimal-extraction calculations are performed in “rectified” space, and so a natural by-product of the processing is a useful output file containing the rectified image. The optimal-extraction technique is unsuitable for extended sources and best only for point sources.

This thesis is a spectropolarimetric survey of broad absorption line quasi-stellar objects (BAL QSO). We observed 36 BAL QSO at low resolution with the 5 m Hale Telescope at Palomar Observatory and the 10 m Keck Telescopes at the W. M. Keck Observatory. The continuum, absorption trough, and emission line polarization of BAL QSO were studied in detail, yielding clues about the geometrical structure of gas in the inner regions of quasars. BAL QSO have, on average, higher polarization than other quasars, reinforcing the view that they are normal quasars viewed from a more equatorial aspect. However, there is a wide distribution of polarization values, which may be due to intrinsic differences in the geometry or optical depth to scattering. No correlations are found among emission line or broad absorption line properties and continuum polarization, suggesting that these properties are regulated by internal differences unrelated to viewing angle. The continuum polarization of BAL QSO is weakly wavelength dependent after correction for emission line dilution. In most objects, the polarization rises to the blue, suggesting that dust scattering or absorption may be important. Broad emission line photons are polarized less than the continuum; and the position angle of the electric vector is rotated with respect to the continuum. The semi-forbidden C III] emission line is polarized differently than the C IV emission line in some cases, suggesting resonance scattering in the C III] emission line region. Resonantly scattered photons from the broad absorption line region are detected at high velocities red-ward and blue-ward of the C IV line center in the spectra of some objects. These photons are negatively polarized with respect to the continuum photons, showing that the broad absorption line region and the continuum scattering region are oriented perpendicular to each other. The polarization increases in the BAL troughs, due mainly to partial coverage of the central source by the broad absorption line region. Partial coverage of the continuum and broad emission line clouds leads to difficulties in determining the true optical depth of the BAL outflow. The geometry of the intervening BAL clouds is skewed with respect to the continuum scattering region, which results in position angle rotations in the BAL. The variation of polarization with velocity in the BAL is consistent with a non-radial, accelerating outflow of ionized gas. Our polarimetry observations are consistent with a model which unifies BAL QSO and non-BAL QSO. The BAL wind appears to occupy a narrow range of equatorial latitudes. When we view a QSO through this outflow, we see the characteristic troughs in BAL QSO.
