16. SOFIA/upGREAT far-infrared spectroscopy of bright rimmed pillars in IC 1848.

Abstract

Using the upGREAT instrument on SOFIA, we imaged the [C II] 158 µm fine structure line emission in bright-rimmed pillars located at the southern edge of the IC 1848 H II region, and carried out pointed observations of the [O I] 63 and 145 µm fine structure lines toward selected positions. The observations are used to characterize the morphology, velocity field, and the physical conditions in the G1–G3 filaments. The velocity-resolved [C II] spectra show evidence of a velocity shift at the head of the brightest G1 filament, possibly caused by radiation pressure from the impinging UV photons or the rocket effect of the evaporating gas. Archival Herschel PACS and SPIRE observations imply H2 column densities in the range 1021 –1022 cm−2 , corresponding to maximum visual extinction AV ≃ 10 mag, and average H2 volume density of ≃4500 cm−3 in the filaments. The [C II] emission traces ∼17% of the total H2 column density, as derived from dust SED fits. Photon-dominated region models are unable to explain the observed line intensities of the two [O I] fine structure lines in IC 1848, with the observed [O I] 145 µm line being too strong compared to the model predictions. The [O I] lines in IC 1848 are overall weak and the signal-to-noise ratio is limited. However, our observations suggest that the [O I] 63/145 µm intensity ratio is a sensitive probe of the physical conditions in photon-dominated regions such as IC 1848. These lines are thus excellent targets for future high-altitude balloon instruments, less affected by telluric absorption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Aims. We investigate the dynamical and physical structures of bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) in a nearby H II region. We focused on carbon- and oxygen-bearing species that trace photon-dominated regions (PDRs) and warm molecular cloud surfaces in order to understand the effect of UV radiation from the exciting stars on the cloud structure. Methods. We mapped four regions around the most prominent BRCs at scales of 4–10 arcmin in the H II region IC 1396 (IC 1396A, B, D, and E) in [C II] 158 µm with (up)GREAT on board SOFIA. IC 1396 is predominantly excited by an O6.5V star. Toward IC 1396A, we also observed [O I] 63 µm and 145 µm. We combined these observations with JCMT archive data, which provide the low-J transitions of CO, 13CO, and C18O. All spectra are velocity-resolved. Results. The line profiles in the four mapped regions show a variety of velocity structures, which we investigated in detail for all observed emission lines. IC 1396B and D show clearly distinct velocity components that overlap along the line of sight. We find no clear sign of photoevaporating flows in the [C II] spectra, although the uncertainty in the location of the BRCs along the line of sight makes this interpretation inconclusive. Our analysis of the [13C II] emission in IC1396 A, which has the best signal-to-noise ratio, suggests that the [C II] is likely mostly optically thin. The heating efficiency, measured by the ([C II]+[O I] 63 µm)/far-infrared intensity ratio, is higher in the northern part of IC 1396A than in the southern part, which may indicate a difference in the dust properties of the two areas. Conclusions. The complex velocity structures identified in the BRCs of IC 1396, which is apparently a relatively simple H II region, highlight the importance of velocity-resolved data for disentangling different components along the line of sight and thus facilitating a detailed study of the dynamics of the cloud. We also demonstrate that the optically thin [13C II] and [O I] 145 µm emission lines are essential for a conclusive interpretation of the [C II] 158 µm and [O I] 63 µm line profiles. Abstract

We have mapped the NGC 2023 reflection nebula in the 63 and 145  |$\mu$| m transitions of [O  i ] and the 158  |$\mu$| m [C  ii ] spectral lines using the heterodyne receiver upGREAT on SOFIA. The observations were used to identify the diffuse and dense components of the photon-dominated region (PDR) traced by the [C  ii ] and [O  i ] emission, respectively. The velocity-resolved observations reveal the presence of a significant column of low-excitation atomic oxygen, seen in absorption in the [O  i ] 63  |$\mu$| m spectra, amounting to about 20–60 per cent of the oxygen column seen in emission in the [O  i ] 145  |$\mu$| m spectra. Some self-absorption is also seen in [C  ii ], but for the most part it is hardly noticeable. The [C  ii ] and [O  i ] 63  |$\mu$| m spectra show strong red- and blue-shifted wings due to photoevaporation flows especially in the south-eastern and southern part of the reflection nebula, where comparison with the mid- and high- J CO emission indicates that the C+ region is expanding into a dense molecular cloud. Using a two-slab toy model the large-scale self-absorption seen in [O  i ] 63  |$\mu$| m is readily explained as originating in foreground low-excitation gas associated with the source. Similar columns have also been observed recently in other Galactic PDRs. These results have two implications: for the velocity-unresolved extragalactic observations this could impact the use of [O  i ] 63  |$\mu$| m as a tracer of massive star formation and secondly, the widespread self-absorption in [O  i ] 63  |$\mu$| m leads to underestimate of the column density of atomic oxygen derived from this tracer and necessitates the use of alternative indirect methods. Abstract

Aim: Identifying plasma molecules associated with skeletal muscle properties can elucidate the pathophysiology of sarcopenia. Because adipocytokines are a promising candidate marker, the current study aimed to clarify the possible associations between adiponectin and leptin levels and mid‐thigh muscle cross‐sectional area and mean attenuation value, which are indices of muscle mass and fat deposition in muscle, respectively. Methods: The current study included 1440 older Japanese adults (mean age 69.3 years). Mid‐thigh skeletal muscle cross‐sectional area and mean attenuation value were evaluated through computed tomography scan. A low attenuation value showed a greater fat deposition in muscle. Circulating adiponectin and leptin levels were assessed using blood specimens collected during the baseline investigation. Results: Plasma leptin level was inversely correlated with muscle cross‐sectional area, but not with attenuation value. The association with cross‐sectional area was independent of possible confounding factors including body size (Q1: reference; Q2: β = −0.032, P = 0.033; Q3: β = −0.064, P < 0.001; Q4: β = −0.111, P < 0.001). In contrast, adiponectin level was independently and inversely associated with attenuation value (Q1: reference; Q2: β = −0.044, P = 0.122; Q3: β = −0.080, P = 0.006; Q4: β = −0.159, P < 0.001), but not with cross‐sectional area. These associations between adipocytokine levels and muscle properties were independent of abdominal fat area and insulin resistance. Conclusions: There were adiposity‐ and insulin resistance‐independent associations between adipocytokines levels and skeletal muscle mass and fat deposition in muscle, suggesting an involvement of adipocytokines in muscle properties. Abstract

Background There is a close association between frailty and cognitive impairment. However, the underlying contribution of sarcopenia to the development of cognitive impairment is unclear. We investigated the possible association between muscle mass decline and cognitive impairment in a cross‐sectional study of 1518 subjects aged 55 years or above. We also evaluated arterial stiffness and white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) as possible underlying mechanisms for this association. Methods Two sarcopenic indices were measured: thigh muscle cross‐sectional area (CSA; calculated by computed tomography) and skeletal muscle mass (bioelectric impedance). Muscle mass decline was defined as either the bottom 10% or 20% of participants for each sex. Cognitive function was assessed using the Touch Panel‐type Dementia Assessment Scale, and brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity was measured as an index of arterial stiffness. Results Both sarcopenic indices were modestly but significantly associated with brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity in male and female subjects. The presence of WMHs was significantly associated with low thigh muscle CSA in men and with low skeletal muscle mass in women. The Touch Panel‐type Dementia Assessment Scale score was modestly but significantly and positively associated with thigh muscle CSA in men and skeletal muscle mass in women. Muscle mass decline in the bottom 10% of participants on both sarcopenic indices was significantly and independently related to cognitive impairment in women. Conclusions Lower sarcopenic indices are significantly related to lower cognitive scores. Arterial stiffness and WMHs could account, at least in part, for this association.

Abstract

With aging, sarcopenia and the associated locomotor disorders, have become serious problems. The roots of maca contain active ingredients (triterpenes) that have a preventive effect on sarcopenia. However, the effect of maca on muscle hypertrophy has not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to examine the effects and mechanism of maca on muscle hypertrophy by adding different concentrations of yellow maca (0.1 mg/mL and 0.2 mg/mL) to C2C12 skeletal muscle cell culture. Two days after differentiation, maca was added for two days of incubation. The muscle diameter, area, differentiation index, and multinucleation, were assessed by immunostaining, and the expression levels of the proteins related to muscle protein synthesis/degradation were examined by Western blotting. Compared with the control group, the muscle diameter and area of the myotubes in the maca groups were significantly increased, and the cell differentiation index and multinucleation were significantly higher in the maca groups. Phosphorylation of Akt and mTOR was elevated in the maca groups. Maca also promoted the phosphorylation of AMPK. These results suggest that maca may promote muscle hypertrophy, differentiation, and maturation, potentially via the muscle hypertrophic signaling pathways such as Akt and mTOR, while exploring other pathways are needed.
