Most participants affirmed the reduction in copayment (88.6%) and saving time and labor for hospital visits (88.6%). Six patients who received dupilumab complained of side effects, but all, except for one, continued the treatment. Of the 13 patients who had previously used a syringe-type device, 10 preferred the pen type because of its ease of use, while 3 (23%) preferred the syringe type because of the self-adjustable injection speed for pain control.Conclusion: Administration of biologics using pen-type devices is easier, and the introduction of home self-injection leads to a reduction in outpatient visits and copayment.Keywords: dupilumab, mepolizumab, self-injection, asthma, atopic dermatitis, chronic sinusitis with nasal polyps

4. Physics-informed neural networks for inversion of river flow and geometry with shallow water model.

Abstract

The river flow transports sediment, resulting in the formation of alternating sandbars in the riverbed. The underlying physics is characterized by the interaction between flow and river geometry, necessitating an understanding of their inseparable relationship. However, the dynamics of river flow with alternating sandbars are hard to understand due to the difficulty of measuring flow depth and riverbed geometry during floods with current technology. This study implements an innovative approach utilizing physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to estimate important hydraulic variables in rivers that are difficult to measure directly. The method uses sparse yet obtainable flow velocity and water level data. The governing equations of motion, continuity, and the constant discharge condition based on the mass conservation principle are integrated into the neural network as physical constraints. This approach enables the completion of sparse velocity fields and the inversion of flow depth, riverbed elevation, and roughness coefficients without requiring direct training data for these variables. Validation was performed using model experiment data and numerical simulations derived from these experiments. Results indicate that the accuracy of the estimations is relatively robust to the number of training data points, provided their spatial resolution is finer than the wavelength of the sandbars. The inclusion of mass conservation as a redundant constraint significantly improved the convergence and accuracy of the model. This PINNs-based approach, using measurable data, offers a new way to quantify complex river flows on alternating sandbars without significant updates to conventional methods, providing new insights into river physics. Abstract

Oceanic core complexes expose gabbroic rocks on the seafloor via detachment faulting, often associated with serpentinized peridotite. The thickness of these serpentinite units is unknown. Assuming that the steep slopes that typically surround these core complexes provide a cross section through the structure, it has been inferred that serpentinites compose much of the section to depths of at least several hundred meters. However, deep drilling at oceanic core complexes has recovered gabbroic sequences with virtually no serpentinized peridotite. We propose a revised model for oceanic core complex development based on consideration of the rheological differences between gabbro and serpentinized peridotite: emplacement of a large intrusive gabbro body into a predominantly peridotite host is followed by localization of strain around the margins of the pluton, eventually resulting in an uplifted gabbroic core surrounded by deformed serpentinite. Oceanic core complexes may therefore reflect processes associated with relatively enhanced periods of mafic intrusion within overall magma-poor regions of slow- and ultra-slow-spreading ridges. Abstract

The Mado Megamullion is an oceanic core complex (OCC) in the Shikoku back‐arc basin within the Philippine Sea Plate. Mantle peridotites (serpentinized) recovered by six dredge and submersible cruises exhibit signatures of extensive deformation. Amorphous pseudomorphs after plagioclase in many of the samples, as well as plagioclase‐spinel intergrowths, are clear evidence of melt stagnation and mantle reaction. Spinels show a wide range of compositions in terms of their Cr#, Mg#, and TiO2 content. The presence of apparently magmatic high‐temperature pargasitic amphibole in veins and as replacement of clinopyroxene suggests that it may be a primary or near‐primary mineral crystallized from a hydrous melt which is unusual for abyssal peridotites. Two trace‐element populations of clinopyroxenes are in equilibrium with depleted and enriched basaltic melts, respectively. Rare‐earth element (REE) in the most depleted clinopyroxenes are modeled by 10% fractional melting except for a ubiquitous La‐Ce "kick." Multiple models of open system melting combined with subsequent mixing of an enriched melt can explain the REE data. Broadly it appears that the peridotites underwent variable degrees of partial melting with moderate influx of enriched melts, which agrees with the other textural and chemical evidence of melt‐rock reaction and re‐fertilization. The compositions of the accumulated melts simulated by the open system models reproduce the enrichments in fluid mobile elements (Ba, U, and Pb) observed in basalts dredged from the Shikoku basin. Back‐arc basin peridotites at Mado Megamullion appear to have a unique petrographic and geochemical character that is distinct from those of peridotites exposed at the seafloor after formation from mid‐ocean ridges. Abstract

Oceanic core complexes (OCCs) represent tectonic windows into the oceanic lower crust and mantle; they are key structures in understanding the tectono‐magmatic processes shaping the oceanic lithosphere. We present a petrological and geochemical study of gabbros collected at the Mado Megamullion, a recently discovered OCC located in the extinct Shikoku back‐arc basin. Bathymetry of the Mado Megamullion reveals spreading‐parallel corrugations extending 25 km from the breakaway to the termination. Samples from several locations include peridotites, gabbros, dolerite, and rare pillow basalts. Gabbros range from granular to varitextured olivine gabbros and oxide gabbros. The emplacement of these gabbroic rocks within the oceanic lithosphere was followed by a multiphase tectono‐metamorphic evolution including (i) dynamic recrystallization within shear zones, developed under granulite‐ to upper‐amphibolite‐facies conditions, and (ii) intrusion of highly evolved melts forming felsic segregations. This tectono‐metamorphic evolution recalls that of the lower crust from other OCCs worldwide, demonstrating that this OCC exposes deep‐seated intrusions progressively exhumed by detachment faulting. Nonetheless, the Mado Megamullion lower crustal gabbros show an unusual crystal line of descent, different from what is reported from mid‐ocean ridge lower crustal rocks. We infer that the water‐bearing character of the primary melts in this back‐arc basin triggered the early precipitation of clinopyroxene, soon followed by amphibole and Fe‐Ti oxides. Such modifications in phase saturation are likely to be directly related to the back‐arc setting of the Mado Megamullion. If so, the phase assemblages of oceanic gabbros may be a diagnostic for the tectonic setting of lower crustal rocks in ophiolites. Abstract

This report summarizes technical work conducted by LANL staff and international collaborators insupport of the UFD Storage Experimentation effort. The current focus of this technical work is two-fold:1) on the stainless steel (304L) failure mechanism known as stress corrosion cracking (SCC), and 2) onthe concrete integrity under degradation conditions (e.g., thermal, radiation, alkali-aggregate reactions).As these issues are common among our international partners, a significant effort has been put forth toengage foreign programs in a mutually beneficial collaborative program on these topics. Results fromthese collaborations, notably with Japan, France and Switzerland, are highlighted.

Abstract

Summary: Clinicians' evaluations of older adults sometimes reveal inconsistencies between objective and subjective dental status. This study investigated which factors contribute both to good objective masticatory function (OMF) and the poor subjective masticatory function (SMF) that often becomes a clinical issue. Study participants included 635 elderly community‐dwelling Japanese adults who underwent a comprehensive geriatric health examination in 2012. SMF was assessed with a question from the Kihon Checklist on eating difficulties (poor or good). OMF was assessed by a colour‐changing gum (poor or good). Also investigated were age, sex, depressive symptoms, instrumental activities of daily living (I‐ADLs), number of people who joined the participant at dinner, grip strength, usual walking speed, number of remaining teeth, number of functional teeth and their occlusal force. The group with good OMF and good SMF, defined as group 1, and the group with good OMF but poor SMF, group 2, were compared. Logistic regression analyses confirmed that the number of remaining and functional teeth participants had was statistically unrelated to differences between OMF and SMF. Instead, differences were related to stronger depressive symptoms (OR = 1.67, CI = 1.14‐2.44), less ability to conduct I‐ADL activities (OR = 0.73, CI = 0.59‐0.91), slower usual walking speeds (OR = 0.18, CI = 0.06‐0.58) and less occlusal force (OR = 0.99, CI = 0.99‐1.00). Depressive symptoms, I‐ADLs, and physical function are shown to be significantly related to divergence between objective and subjective masticatory function in elderly Japanese. This suggests that dissociations between objective and subjective dental evaluations of elderly adults indicate need for assessment of their mental and physical function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. The Gondou hydrothermal field in the Ryukyu Arc: A huge hydrothermal system on the flank of a caldera volcano.

Abstract

High-resolution geophysical mapping was conducted from an autonomous underwater vehicle on the flank of Daisan-Kume Knoll in the Ryukyu Arc, southwest of Japan. 1 m resolution bathymetry identified 264 spires, 173 large mounds and 268 small mounds within a depression that is up to 1600 m wide and up to 60 m deep, at water depths between 1330 and 1470 m. Hydrothermal venting is strongly inferred from the observation of plumes in sidescan sonar imagery and positive temperature anomalies over the spires and mounds. This field, named the Gondou Field, has a giant mound G1 with a diameter of 280 m and a height of 80 m. Mound G1 has distinctive summit ridges composed of multiple spires where acoustic plumes with temperature anomalies up to 1.12°C are observed, indicative of high-temperature venting. Other than mound G1, a number of active large mounds more than 30 m wide and spires over 10-22 m tall are common and they concentrate in the central and southern areas of the field, suggesting that these areas are the center of present hydrothermal activity. Acoustic plumes imaged by side-scan sonar at the Gondou Field are different in character from bubble plumes imaged in other hydrothermal fields in the Ryukyu Arc. Abstract

For the biological control of diamondback moth ( DBM) larvae in commercial greenhouses, we have previously identified a blend of volatiles that attracted Cotesia vestalis, a parasitoid of DBM larvae. Here, we tested the effects of an artificial volatile blend on the attractiveness of komatsuna plants (Japanese mustard spinach; Brassica rapa var. perviridis) to C. vestalis under greenhouse conditions. First, we showed that female C. vestalis preferred infested komatsuna plants to uninfested plants in the greenhouse. Under the same conditions, placing the artificial attractants near both infested and uninfested plants did not affect the wasps' preference. However, when comparing infested komatsuna plants coupled with the artificial attractants with infested plants without them, significantly more female C. vestalis were attracted to the former. Abstract

Two key technologies consisting of chip-to-wafer bonding through a non-conductive film (NCF) and wafer-level packaging using compression molding were studied for self-assembly-based 3D integration, especially reconfigured wafer-to-wafer stacking. 4-mm-by-5-mm chips having 20-μm-pitch Cu-SnAg microbumps were successfully bonded to wafers through NCF. The resulting daisy chain obtained from the chip-to-wafer structure showed low contact resistance of approximately 50 MΩ/bump. Compression molding was implemented to a chip-on-wafer structure. Grinding of the chip-on-wafer structure gave low total thickness variation (TTV) within 1 μm and the following CMP led good planarization capability. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Development of the noninvasive imaging equipment for the diagnosis of visceral fat in the early stage has been eagerly anticipated. The ultrasonic velocity-change imaging method was applied to living rabbits fed on the standard diet and that on the high fat diet. Experimental results show that the ultrasonic velocity-change images give the information about the fat accumulation level in liver of rabbit. Abstract

The influence of Cu contamination from Cu through-silicon via (TSV) on device reliability in the 3-D LSI was electrically evaluated by capacitance-time (C-t) measurement. The Cu/Ta gate trench capacitors with two types of Ta barrier layers of 10-nm and 100-nm thicknesses (at the surface) were fabricated. The C-t curves of the trench capacitors with 10-nm thick Ta layer were severely degraded even after the initial annealing for 5 min at 300°C. It means that Cu atoms diffuse into the active area from the Cu TSV through scallop portions with extremely thin Ta layer in TSVs, and consequently, the generation lifetime of minority carrier is significantly reduced. However, the C-t curves of the trench capacitors with 100-nm thick Ta layer exhibit no change after annealing up to 60min. Based on the C-t evaluation results, we developed high reliable and fine-size of 5-μm diameter backside Cu TSV to achieve high reliability and high-end 3-D LSIs. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Abstract

To ensure the safety and reliability of atomic power plants and airplanes, the technique of monitoring closed fatigue cracks is requisite. Here we monitored the distribution of the crack depths and closure behavior in the length direction after 48000 and 87000 fatigue cycles using subharmonic phased array for crack evaluation (SPACE). The crack depths in the subharmonic images were larger than those in the fundamental images. Specifically, the difference was larger at near the side surface than at the center. The percentage of the closed part varied with the crack growth in the specimen. In addition, we fabricated shoe for SPACE to facilitate mechanical scanning. Thus, it was demonstrated that SPACE is useful in monitoring closed fatigue crack growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
