1. Improvement in Stage of Lung Cancer Diagnosis With Incidental Pulmonary Nodules Followed With a Patient Tracking System and Computerized Registry

Abstract

Introduction: Given that an incidental pulmonary nodule (IPN) on chest computed tomography (CT) may represent nascent lung cancer, timely follow-up imaging is critical to assess nodule growth and the need for tissue sampling. We previously reported our institution’s systematic process to identify and track patients with an IPN associated with improved CT on follow-up. We hypothesized that this improvement may have led to a higher frequency of early-stage lung cancer. To evaluate this, we performed a study to determine whether cases of early-stage lung cancer were more likely to have had our tracking system applied to suspicious findings. Methods: An observational study was performed by identifying cases of lung cancer that were detected as IPNs on chest CT scans performed at our institution, from 2006 to 2016. A total of 314 cases were dichotomized into early-stage (stage 1) or late-stage (stages II to IV) disease. A multivariant regression analysis with modeling was used to determine factors associated with a diagnosis of early-stage disease. Factors included the use of the tracking system and nodule registry. Results: The following factors were independently associated with early-stage lung cancer: index nodule diameter, (OR = 0.971, confidence interval [CI]: 0.948–0.995], p = 0.016), adenocarcinoma histology (OR = 2.930 [CI: 1.695–5.064], p = 0.0001) and use of tracker phrases on CT reports (OR = 1.939 [CI: 1.126–3.339], p = 0.016). Conclusions: The application of a patient tracking system and computerized lung nodule registry lead to an increased frequency in the diagnosis of stage 1 NSCLC from IPNs. This is a meaningful outcome for patients and should be adapted for IPN management.

6. Optimization of a shell and helically finned tube heat exchanger with stepped annular fins.

Abstract

The authors investigated four different fin geometries to select the best fin geometry in their previous work. They found out that the Nusselt number of the shell side is 80.79% higher for the stepped fin geometry compared to the simple annular fin at best. In this study, for the first time the heat transfer in a shell and helically coiled finned tube heat exchanger with stepped annular fins is investigated. The coiled tube and the stepped ring fins that are welded to the outside surface of the tube are all made of copper. After examining network independence, 27 cases were designed using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Correlations have been proposed to predict Nuc$N{u}_c$ and Nush$N{u}_{sh}$ by considering all geometric and operating parameters. These correlations have very high accuracy and can be used in a specific range of parameters. The effect of each of the parameters on Nuc$N{u}_c$ and Nush$N{u}_{sh}$ are also specified. Re${\mathop{\rm Re}\nolimits} $ and Pr$\Pr $ are the parameters that have the most impact on the Nusselt number on the same side, but at the same time have almost no effect on the Nusselt number on the other side. Rec${{\mathop{\rm Re}\nolimits} }_c$ and Resh${{\mathop{\rm Re}\nolimits} }_{sh}$ have the highest participation rate in determining Nuc$N{u}_c$ and Nush$N{u}_{sh}$ with 82.62% and 71.13%, respectively. The results are presented based on dimensionless parameters. The optimization process is performed for each of the responses, and the values ​​of the corresponding parameters are also shown. Nush$N{u}_{sh}$, which is the most critical response in this study, has improved 19.59% in the optimized case, even compared to the best of the 27 cases studied. Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the influence of contamination and different cleaning methods on resin bonding to cobalt-chromium (CoCr) alloy disks. Materials and Methods: A total of 160 CoCr disks were divided into 3 groups. The first group (N = 64) was air abraded with alumina particles; the second group (N=64) was air abraded and contaminated with silicone disclosing agent and saliva; the third group (N=32) was neither air abraded nor contaminated. The first two groups were divided into 4 subgroups (N = 16) according to the cleaning method: ultrasonic bath in 99% isopropanol, use of a cleaning suspension of zirconium oxide particles, use of a cleaning suspension based on 10-MDP salt, and treatment with atmospheric plasma. The third group was divided into 2 subgroups (N = 16): treatment with atmospheric plasma and no treatment. All CoCr specimens were bonded to plexiglas tubes filled with a bonding resin that contained phosphate monomer. Tensile bond strength (TBS) was examined by tensile testing after 3 and 150days of water storage plus 37,500 thermal cycles (N = 8). Results: After contamination, TBS was significantly reduced after 150days of water storage. Groups without air abrasion showed initially low TBS and debonded spontaneously after 150days of water storage. Conclusion: None of the cleaning methods was able to remove saliva and silicone disclosing agent on CoCr-alloy surfaces. 8. CSF levels of brain-derived proteins correlate with brain ventricular volume in cognitively healthy 70-year-olds.

Abstract

Background: The effect of varying brain ventricular volume on the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) proteome has been discussed as possible confounding factors in comparative protein level analyses. However, the relationship between CSF volume and protein levels remains largely unexplored. Moreover, the few existing studies provide conflicting findings, indicating the need for further research. Methods: Here, we explored the association between levels of 88 pre-selected CSF proteins and ventricular volume derived from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) measurements in 157 cognitively healthy 70-year-olds from the H70 Gothenburg Birth Cohort Studies, including individuals with and without pathological levels of Alzheimer's disease (AD) CSF markers (n = 123 and 34, respectively). Both left and right lateral, the inferior horn as well as the third and the fourth ventricular volumes were measured. Different antibody-based methods were employed for the protein measurements, with most being analyzed using a multiplex bead-based microarray technology. Furthermore, the associations between the protein levels and cortical thickness, fractional anisotropy, and mean diffusivity were assessed. Results: CSF levels of many brain-derived proteins correlated with ventricular volumes in A-T- individuals, with lower levels in individuals with larger ventricles. The strongest negative correlations with total ventricular volume were observed for neurocan (NCAN) and neurosecretory protein VGF (rho = -0.34 for both). Significant negative correlations were observed also for amyloid beta (Ab) 38, Ab40, total tau (t-tau), and phosphorylated tau (p-tau), with correlation ranging between − 0.34 and − 0.28, while no association was observed between ventricular volumes and Ab42 or neurofilament light chain (NfL). Proteins with negative correlations to ventricular volumes further demonstrated negative correlations to mean diffusivity and positive correlation to fractional anisotropy. However, only weak or no correlations were observed between the CSF protein levels and cortical thickness. A + T + individuals demonstrated higher CSF protein levels compared to A-T- individuals with the most significant differences observed for neurogranin (NRGN) and synuclein beta (SNCB). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the levels of many brain-derived proteins in CSF may be subjected to dilution effects depending on the size of the brain ventricles in healthy individuals without AD pathology. 10. Biochar-Enhanced Carbon-Negative and Sustainable Cement Composites: A Scientometric Review.

Abstract

The increasing demand for cement, which is being driven by global urbanization and infrastructure expansion, necessitates sustainable alternatives to be used as construction materials. Cement-based composites, a prevalent construction material, are known for their high carbon footprint. Consequently, exploring sustainable alternatives is urgently needed to curb the environmental impact of the construction sector by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2). Thus, utilizing biochar (BC) in cement-based composites, either as additive or cement, and in aggregate replacement could be a green approach, by producing enhanced composites with the capabilities of CO2 sequestration. This review investigates the BC-modified cement composites by performing a scientometric assessment of the Scopus database and a thorough manual review. A scientometric assessment of Scopus-indexed publications retrieved from 2010–2024 was conducted to highlight key research trends, including influential authors, frequently cited works, countries, and institutions. The findings provide a comprehensive overview of the current situation of BC research and applications in cement-based composites for sustainable construction. The assessment revealed that the Construction and Building Materials journal was the most prolific source of publications (n = 34), followed by Gupta, with S as the most prolific author (n = 11), and China as the leading country in the field (n = 56). It also highlights the emerging areas for the use of BC in the construction sector for sequestering CO2 and potential future directions. Additionally, the review discusses BC sources and BC production technologies and characteristics. It also discusses the influence of BC inclusion on the fresh properties, its mechanical properties, durability characteristics, carbon capture capabilities, and the environmental impacts of modified cement-based composites. It has been noted that BC addition to cement-based composites from 1% to 2% can increase its mechanical performance, whereas, beyond a 5% to 6% replacement, they experienced a decline compared to non-modified composites. BC addition has reduced the flow characteristics of the modified composites due to its porous morphology and hydrophobic nature but has shown improved internal curing and reduced shrinkage. It also improved the microstructure of the cement-based composite through pore refinement, due to the filling ability of the BC particles attributed to its specific surface area and size. Additionally, the carbon sequestration potential of BC can be exploited in cement-based composites to create low carbon or carbon-negative building materials with improved mechanical and durability characteristics. The syntheses and characterization (NMR and XRD) of two substituted [2.2.2]bi­cyclo­octene ring systems are described here. The cyclo­hexene rings of these systems adopt a nearly perfect boat conformation according to analysis using Cremer–Pople parameters. 12. Excess risk of chronic health conditions in Black adolescent and young adult cancer survivors.

Abstract

Background: The US population of adolescent and young adult (age 15–39 years at diagnosis) cancer survivors is growing. Previous studies have identified racial and ethnic disparities in survival and health outcomes in racially minoritized survivors, including Black survivors, compared with White survivors. However, comparisons should be made between those of the same race or ethnicity with and without a history of AYA cancer to fully understand the association of a cancer diagnosis with socioeconomic status (SES) and health outcomes within a minoritized population. Methods: Non-Hispanic Black AYA cancer survivors and non-Hispanic Black age- and sex-matched controls were identified from self-reported data from the National Health Interview Survey (2009–2018). SES factors and chronic health conditions prevalence were compared between survivors and controls using chi-square tests. Survey-weighted logistic regression models were used to determine odds of chronic conditions by SES factors within and between survivors and controls. Interactions between each variable and cancer group were assessed. Results: A total of 445 survivors and 4450 controls were included. Survivors were less likely than controls to be married, have family income >45K/year, have completed a bachelor's degree or higher, and have private insurance. Survivors had higher odds than controls of having at least one (odds ratio (OR): 7.02, p<0.001) and ≥3 (OR: 4.44, p<0.001) chronic conditions. Survivors had higher odds of each chronic condition assessed including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Survivors had higher odds of having chronic health conditions compared with controls across all SES variables. Conclusions: A cancer diagnosis during adolescence and young adulthood is associated with poor SES outcomes and increased odds of comorbidities within the Black population, thus further exacerbating existing disparities. Implications for Cancer Survivors: Black AYA cancer survivors have a very high risk of developing chronic health conditions after cancer treatment and interventions are needed to improve long-term health outcomes for this population. The chemical composition of pyrolysis products of the test peat sample was determined using pyrolytic gas chromatography (GC–MS). Abstract

The DC–DC conversion stage of a three‐stage solid‐state transformer is the most challenging due to the combination of high power, medium voltage, and medium frequency. This combination also causes most of the losses in the DC–DC stage. To address this issue, a new asymmetrical quadruple active bridge series resonant DC–DC converter (AQAB‐SRC) has been proposed as a building block for solid‐state transformers. The converter achieves soft switching of all switches throughout the operating range by extending and using the half‐cycle continuous conduction mode control strategy. It also has fewer high‐frequency transformers compared to other converters, as more bridges are connected to the same multi‐winding transformer. The optimal design of AQAB‐SRC has been analyzed theoretically, and simulation and lab‐scale experimental results have been obtained to validate the feasibility and validity of the proposed topology. Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the drying kinetics of fruit and vegetable peel biowaste using a sustainable technique as a key-pretreatment for its conversion into useful feedstock. Biowaste represents a missed potential source of bioenergy and bioproducts, but moisture removal is required, and conventional drying methods are expensive since they require great quantity of energy supplied, almost always, by a non-renewable energy. In this study six batches with the same quantity of biowaste, and heterogeneous physical composition were dried under open-sun conditions. We evaluated the influence of the interaction between drying area and the initial moisture content on drying rate. Eight semi-theoretical models were fitted using Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm to predict drying rate, and their accuracy was assessed through goodness-of-fit tests. Maximum moisture content to preserve biomass (10%) was reached on 5th day and the equilibrium on 16th day of drying. According to goodness-of-fit test (R2 = 0.999, χ2 = 4.666 × 10−5, RMSE = 0.00683) the best model to predict drying rate was Two-term model. The mathematical model obtained from Fick's second law is reliable to predict drying kinetics, R2 (0.9648 ± 0.0106); despite the variation between drying area and initial moisture content. Kruskal-Wallis test showed that drying rates between batches are not significantly different (p = 0.639; 0.05); nor effective diffusion coefficient (Deff = 4.97 × 10−11 ± 0.3491 × 10−11), (p = 0.723; 0.05). The study of drying kinetics is crucial for selecting the optimal biowaste treatment based on its generation context. Abstract

The Short Form-12 Health Survey (SF-12) is used to assess the patient's quality of life (QoL) using the physical component score (PCS) and the mental component score (MCS). The purpose of this study was to determine whether the SF-12 PCS and MCS are associated with psoriasis severity and to compare QoL between Murdough Family Center for Psoriasis (MFCP) patients and patients with other major chronic diseases included in the National Survey of Functional Health Status data. We used data from 429 adult patients enrolled in MFCP. Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) was used to assess psoriasis severity at the time of completion of the SF-12 questionnaire. Other variables included age, sex, body mass index, psoriatic arthritis, psychiatric disorders, and comorbidities. Linear regression models were used to estimate effect sizes ± 95% confidence intervals. For every 10-point increase in PASI, there was a 1.1 ± 1.3 unit decrease in MCS (P=0.100) and a 2.4 ± 1.3 unit decrease in PCS (P0.001). Psoriasis severity was associated with PCS and MCS after adjusting for variables, although the strength of the relationship was attenuated in some models. Psoriasis severity is associated with decreased QoL. SF-12 may be a useful tool for assessing QoL among psoriasis patients.

20. Building a diabetes registry from the Veterans Health Administration's computerized patient record system.

Background: Little information is available describing how to implement a disease registry from an electronic patient record system. The aim of this report is to describe the technology, methods, and utility of a diabetes registry populated by the Veterans Health Information Systems Architecture (VistA), which underlies the computerized patient record system of the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) in Veteran Affairs Integrated Service Network 10 (VISN 10)., Methods: VISN 10 data from VistA were mapped to a relational SQL-based data system using KB&#95;SQL software. Operational definitions for diabetes, active clinical management, and responsible providers were used to create views of patient-level data in the diabetes registry. Query Analyzer was used to access the data views directly. Semicustomizable reports were created by linking the diabetes registry to a Web page using Microsoft asp.net2. A retrospective observational study design was used to analyze trends in the process of care and outcomes., Results: Since October 2001, 81,227 patients with diabetes have enrolled in VISN 10: approximately 42,000 are currently under active management by VISN 10 providers. By tracking primary care visits, we assigned 91% to a clinic group responsible for diabetes care. In the Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), the frequency of mean annual hemoglobin A1c levels > or =9% has declined significantly over 5 years. Almost 4000 patients have been seen in diabetes intervention programs in the Cleveland VAMC over the past 4 years., Conclusions: A diabetes registry can be populated from the database underlying the VHA electronic patient record database system and linked to Web-based and ad hoc queries useful for quality improvement.

Abstract

The thermal management of a driving motor is related to the performance and economy of the vehicle. The lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) method can provide a model basis for motor temperature-rise control and effectively shorten the development cycle of motor thermal performance design. In this study, an 80 kw water-cooled permanent magnet synchronous motor was used and the accurate thermal model of a motor was built using the LPTN. On the basis of the accurate thermal model, the simplified thermal model of a motor was obtained by reducing the complexity of the model. The temperature-rise test of the end winding and magnetic steel of the motor was carried out under some working conditions. The test conditions were selected according to continuous external characteristics and operating characteristics of the motor. Compared with the experimental results, the temperature-rise error of the two thermal models was less than 5%. The temperature-rise error of the simplified thermal model was less than 3% compared with the accurate thermal model. Abstract

Centrosome amplification is a feature of cancer cells associated with chromosome instability and invasiveness. Enhancing chromosome instability and subsequent cancer cell death via centrosome unclustering and multipolar divisions is an aimed-for therapeutic approach. Here, we show that centrosome amplification potentiates responses to conventional chemotherapy in addition to its effect on multipolar divisions and chromosome instability. We perform single-cell live imaging of chemotherapy responses in epithelial ovarian cancer cell lines and observe increased cell death when centrosome amplification is induced. By correlating cell fate with mitotic behaviors, we show that enhanced cell death can occur independently of chromosome instability. We identify that cells with centrosome amplification are primed for apoptosis. We show they are dependent on the apoptotic inhibitor BCL-XL and that this is not a consequence of mitotic stresses associated with centrosome amplification. Given the multiple mechanisms that promote chemotherapy responses in cells with centrosome amplification, we assess such a relationship in an epithelial ovarian cancer patient cohort. We show that high centrosome numbers associate with improved treatment responses and longer overall survival. Our work identifies apoptotic priming as a clinically relevant consequence of centrosome amplification, expanding our understanding of this pleiotropic cancer cell feature. In addition to zinc oxide-based cements, resin-based materials are also available for temporary cementation. The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the influence of the different material compositions on temporary bonds. In nine test series (n = 30), temporary bis-acrylate single-tooth crowns were bonded onto prefabricated titanium abutments with nine different temporary luting materials. After simulating an initial (24 h, distilled water, 37 °C), a short-term (7 days, distilled water, 37 °C) and a long-term provisional restoration period (12h, distilled water, 37 °C; thermocycling: 5000 cycles) in subgroups (n = 10), the bond strength was examined using a combined tensile–shear test. Statistical analysis was performed by univariate analysis of variance or a non-parametric Kruskal–Wallis test, followed by post hoc tests. Of the three resin-based materials, two showed significantly higher bond strength values compared to all other materials (p < 0.001), regardless of the storage procedure. The resin-based materials were followed by eugenol-free and eugenol-containing zinc oxide materials. Significant intragroup differences were observed between the composite-based materials after all storage periods. This was only observed for some of the zinc oxide-based materials. The results show that under in vitro conditions, not only the composition of the temporary luting materials but also the different storage conditions have a significant influence on temporary bonds. Abstract

Poultry litter was converted to biochar by torrefaction and to hydrochar by hydrothermal carbonisation. Many parameters were measured for the resulting chars, to investigate the effects of the production method and production temperature. SEM showed the presence of large quantities of crystalline material on the surface of the biochars. The elemental composition of some crystals was determined as 35% K and 31% Cl. This was confirmed as sylvite (KCl) crystals, which explains the high levels of water-extractable potassium in the biochar and may also be important in germination inhibition. Biochars almost totally inhibited germination, whilst hydrochars decreased germination. Although germination occurred on hydrochar, root growth was severely inhibited. Consequently, the germination index may be better to determine total phytotoxicity as it measures both effects and could be used as a bioassay for chars used as soil amendments. Washing removed germination inhibition in a low-temperature char (350 °C), possibly by removing KCl; however, root toxicity remained. There were very low levels of heavy metals, suggesting they are not the source of toxicity. In biochars, pore mean size decreased with temperature from 350 °C to 600 °C, due to changes in pore size distribution. The mean pore size was measured directly using SEM. The merits of this method are discussed. Low-temperature biochars seem best suited for fuel as they have a high calorific value, high hydrophobicity, a low ash content and a high yield. Hydrothermal carbonation carbon (HTCC) is emerging as a promising material for the adsorption and photodegradation of environmental contaminants. However, the chemical and structural properties of HTCC derived from different lignocellulose biomass have obvious impacts on adsorption and photodegradation. This work employed three different lignocellulose components, including cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin to synthesize HTCC within a hydrothermal temperature range of 210~290 °C. In comparison to HTCC derived from cellulose and hemicellulose, HTCC derived from lignin (HTCC-L) demonstrated the optimal synergistic adsorption and photodegradation ability for TC degradation, achieving a 63.5% removal efficiency within 120 min. Characterization highlighted the crucial involvement of oxygenated functional groups, especially carboxyl groups, presented on the surface of HTCC-L in TC adsorption. Moreover, the photodegradation of HTCC-L was found to follow a non-radical mechanism, characterized by the charge transformation occurring between the excited unpaired electrons of HTCC-L and TC adsorbed on its surface. This work clarified the differences in HTCC derived from different lignocellulose components on the adsorption and photodegradation of organic pollutants, and provided a novel perspective on the application of HTCC in water treatment. To face the ongoing issues related to global warming, a circular economy approach should be pursued, rethinking the waste management system and the recovery of organic waste. The main organic waste streams are Food Waste (FW) and municipal Sewage Sludge (SS). In the spirit of circularity, a commingled treatment of FW and SS could be a viable solution. To this end, the present work aims to review the technical and environmental aspects of the co-treatment of FW and SS through biological and thermal processes. Firstly, a detailed characterization of the two substrates is presented as well as the current and future treatment technologies. Then, the technical feasibility and the environmental impacts of conventional biological co-treatments of FW and SS (i.e., composting, anaerobic digestion, and a combination of them), as well as innovative thermal ones (i.e., incineration, gasification, pyrolysis, and hydrothermal carbonization), is summarized. Abstract

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is a vector of many infectious agents, including flaviviruses such as Zika virus. Components of mosquito saliva have pleomorphic effects on the vertebrate host to enhance blood feeding, and these changes also create a favorable niche for pathogen replication and dissemination. Here, we demonstrate that human CD47, which is known to be involved in various immune processes, interacts with a 34-kilodalton mosquito salivary protein named Nest1. Nest1 is up-regulated in blood-fed female A. aegypti and facilitates Zika virus dissemination in human skin explants. Nest1 has a stronger affinity for CD47 than its natural ligand, signal regulatory protein α, competing for binding at the same interface. The interaction between Nest1 with CD47 suppresses phagocytosis by human macrophages and inhibits proinflammatory responses by white blood cells, thereby suppressing antiviral responses in the skin. This interaction elucidates how an arthropod protein alters the human response to promote arbovirus infectivity. Electric motors with high-power densities are required for the implementation of electromobility. To achieve this, direct liquid cooling methods are increasingly being considered, in which oil is injected into the motor compartment. This results in a two-phase flow that can be used for efficient cooling. However, the oil, which can also penetrate the air gap between the rotor and stator, can also lead to additional losses due to increased friction. Since little is known about the two-phase flow in such systems, especially in the air gap, it is investigated by means of simple optical visualizations and high-speed laser-induced fluorescence imaging as well as torque measurements. The measurements are carried out in the air gap of an optically accessible generic model of a directly cooled electric motor. Speed variations were performed from 100 to 2000 rpm, and three different two-phase flow regimes were observed. At low speeds (Flow Regime 1), the air gap is filled locally with oil in radial direction, in the medium speed range (Flow Regime 2) with foam, while at high speeds (Flow Regime 3) separated films were observed on the rotor and stator. The torque difference between the two-phase and single-phase operation, which quantifies the mechanical losses due to the injected oil, increased continuously due to the oil in the air gap until it reached a maximum in Flow Regime 2 due to foam formation. In Flow Regime 3, the torque difference was negative. This was attributed to the fact that the grooves in the stator were filled with oil, thus reducing the turbulence generation of the air flow. The optimal process conditions concerning the hydrothermal carbonization of digested sewage sludge are crucial to the economically effective technology needed to produce a solid product, hydrochar, for energy purposes. Accordingly, different residence times, 0.5 h, 1 h and 2 h, were investigated in order to understand the effect of residence time on the process. Furthermore, the physical and chemical properties of hydrochar were investigated and compared to the raw material. For these reasons, analyses describing fuel properties were performed, including ultimate and proximate analyses, HHV, and TGA analysis. The latter method was employed to study the combustion process of solid samples. In addition, the oxide content of different elements within the ash of solid samples was determined using the XRF method to calculate indices related to operational problems during the combustion process. The results confirmed that time did not matter significantly and the physical and chemical properties of hydrochar were very similar to each other. However, the contact angle for 2 h of residence time confirmed that a longer processing time resulted in a more hydrophobic character of hydrochar and enabled more effective dewaterability of hydrothermal slurry. It was also noted that the hydrothermal carbonization process affected the sewage sludge in a positive way. In brief, the results confirmed that the hydrochar was a brittle, moderately hydrophilic, solid carbon-containing product that provided a different combustion performance than the raw sewage sludge. 31. Mechanical Behavior of Five Different Morse Taper Implants and Abutments with Different Conical Internal Connections and Angles: An In Vitro Experimental Study.

Abstract

The present study evaluated the mechanical behavior of five designs of Morse taper (MT) connections with and without the application of loads. For this, the detorque of the fixing screw and the traction force required to disconnect the abutment from the implant were assessed. A total of 100 sets of implants/abutments (IAs) with MT-type connections were used, comprising five groups (n = 20/group): (1) Group Imp 11.5: IA sets with a cone angulation of 11.5°; (2) Group SIN 11.5: with a cone angulation of 11.5°; (3) Group SIN 16: with a cone angulation of 16°; (4) Group Neo 16: with a cone angulation of 16°; and (5) Group Str 15: with a cone angulation of 15°. All sets received the torque recommended by the manufacturer. After applying the torque, the counter torque of the fixing screws was measured in ten IA sets of each group without the application of cyclic loads (frequencies ≤ 2 Hz, 360,000 cycles, and force at 150 Ncm). The other ten sets of each group were subjected to cyclic loads, after which the detorque was measured. Afterwards, the force for disconnection between the implant and the abutment was measured by traction on all the samples. The untwisting of the abutment fixation screws showed a decrease in relation to the initial torque applied in all groups. In the unloaded samples, it was found to be −25.7% in Group 1, −30.4% in Group 2, −36.8% in Group 3, −29.6% in Group 4, and −25.7% in Group 5. After the applied loads, it was found to be −44% in Group 1, −43.5% in Group 2, −48.5% in Group 3, −47.2% in Group 4, and −49.8% in Group 5. The values for the IA sets were zero for SIN 16 (Group 3) and Neo16 (Group 4), both without and with loads. In the other three groups, without loads, the disconnection value was 56.3 ± 2.21 N (Group 1), 30.7 ± 2.00 N (Group 2), and 26.0 ± 2.52 N (Group 5). After applying loads, the values were 63.5 ± 3.06 N for Group 1, 34.2 ± 2.45 N in Group 2, and 23.1 ± 1.29 N in Group 5. It was concluded that in terms of the mechanical behavior of the five designs of MT IA sets, with and without the application of loads, the Imp 11.5, SIN 11.5, and Srt 15 groups showed better results compared to the SIN 16 and Neo 16 groups, showing that lower values of cone angulation increase the friction between the parts (IA), thus avoiding the need to maintain the torque of the fixing screw to maintain the union of the sets. Abstract

Introduction: Chemsex, the use of psychotropic drugs before or during sexual intercourse, is associated with various HIV risk factors, including condomless sex and reduced adherence to pre‐exposure prophylaxis or antiretroviral therapy (ART). In the Philippines, there are still limited studies exploring the associations between chemsex, HIV status and ART adherence. This study aims to compare recent and lifetime chemsex engagement in association with self‐reported HIV status among Filipino men who have sex with men (MSM). We further explored the association between chemsex and ART adherence among people living with HIV engaged in chemsex. Methods: A cross‐sectional online survey of 479 Filipino MSM was conducted from 3 August to 1 December 2019. Demographic profiles, sexual behaviours, drug use, history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), chemsex engagement and HIV status were collected and analysed. Bivariable and multivariable logistic regression were employed to assess the association between self‐reported HIV status and chemsex engagement. Results: Among the 479 respondents, Filipino MSM engaged in drug use and chemsex were generally older compared to those not engaged in drug use and chemsex (average age 31−33 vs. 29 years old; p<0.05). Methamphetamine was the most common drug for people who reported using drugs. An HIV‐positive status was associated with recent chemsex engagement (aOR = 5.18, p<0.05) and a history of STIs (aOR = 2.09, p<0.05). The subgroup analysis showed that 79% (166/200) of persons living with HIV were adherent to ART. There was no significant association found between chemsex and ART adherence in the logistic regression analyses. Conclusions: Chemsex behaviour, particularly recent chemsex engagement, is significantly associated with self‐reported HIV status. The emerging data on MSM engaged in chemsex require integration of a more person‐centred, comprehensive and robust harm reduction programmes into the existing combination prevention strategies in the country. Amino acids are important nitrogen carriers in biomass and entail a broad spectrum of industrial uses, most notably as food additives, pharmaceutical ingredients, and raw materials for bio-based plastics. Attaining detailed information in regard to the fragmentation of amino acids is essential to comprehend the nitrogen transformation chemistry at conditions encountered during hydrothermal and pyrolytic degradation of biomass. The underlying aim of this review is to survey literature studies pertinent to the complex structures of amino acids, their formation yields from various categories of biomass, and their fragmentation routes at elevated temperatures and in the aqueous media. Two predominant degradation reactions ensue in the decomposition of amino acids, namely deamination and decarboxylation. Notably, minor differences in structure can greatly affect the fate for each amino acid. Moreover, amino acids, being nitrogen-rich compounds, play pivotal roles across various fields. There is a growing interest in producing varied types and configurations of amino acids. Microbial fermentation appears to a viable approach to produce amino acids at an industrial scale. One innovative method under investigation is catalytic synthesis using renewable biomass as feedstocks. Such a method taps into the inherent nitrogen in biomass sources like chitin and proteins, eliminating the need for external nitrogen sources. The island of Cyprus was a historical endemic area for cystic echinococcosis (CE) in the Mediterranean. During the last decades, Cyprus has been an open-air laboratory and a model for testing and implementing control measures aiming to eliminate CE as a public health problem. Despite control and surveillance measures implemented during last 50 years, molecular characterization of Echinococcus granulosus sensu lato specimens has been never provided. In February 2023, the carcass of a stray dog collected in the Nicosia district was examined by the Veterinary Services and found infected with Echinococcus spp. worms. The worms were sent to the European Union Reference Laboratory (EURLP) for species/genotype identification. The sequences analyses of nad2 and nad5 genes allowed us to identify the tapeworms as Echinococcus canadensis , genotype G7b. In November 2023, a parasitic liver cyst was observed during the post-mortem examination of a mouflon from the same area of the dog's finding. The cyst sample was also referred to EURLP for identification and comparison with tapeworms previously collected from the dog. The sequences analysis of cox1 gene allowed to identify the cyst as E. granulosus sensu stricto , genotype G1. The finding of 2 different species of E. granulosus s.l. in a limited area raises epidemiological questions on the origin of the samples: whether distinct transmission cycles are present or a recent introduction event have occurred. From a public health perspective, it will be essential to conduct further molecular epidemiology studies to clarify the recent transmission dynamics of Echinococcus species in Cyprus. This study prepared epoxy resin reinforced porous beads (CERBs) by crosslinking a water-soluble epoxy monomer, 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether (BDE), with chitosan (CS) using isophorone diamine (IPD) as a crosslinking agent. CERBs are prepared by a one-step method under atmospheric pressure and used for the adsorption of Congo Red (CR). The Sips isotherm model indicates that the maximum adsorption capacity of CERBs for Congo Red is 2289.2 mg g−1. CERBs have a three-dimensional network structure and strong mechanical properties, and can be reused more than 5 times maintaining a high adsorption capacity. To enhance our understanding of teleost reproductive physiology, we identified six Sichuan bream (Sinibrama taeniatus) vitellogenin genes (vtg1-6) and characterized their sequence structures. We categorized them into type Ⅰ (vtg1,4,5 and 6), type Ⅱ (vtg2) and type Ⅲ (vtg3) based on differences in their subdomain structure. The promoter sequence of vtgs has multiple estrogen response elements, and their abundance appears to correlate with the responsiveness of vtg gene expression to estrogen. Gene expression analyses revealed that the vitellogenesis of Sichuan bream involves both heterosynthesis and autosynthesis pathways, with the dominant pathway originating from the liver. The drug treatment experiments revealed that 17β-estradiol (E2) tightly regulated the level of vtg mRNA in the liver. Feeding fish with a diet containing 100 μg/g E2 for three weeks significantly induced vtg gene expression and ovarian development, leading to an earlier onset of vitellogenesis. Additionally, it was observed that the initiation of vtg transcription required E2 binding to its receptor, a process primarily mediated by estrogen receptor alpha in Sichuan bream. The findings of this study provide novel insights into the molecular information of the vitellogenin gene family in teleosts, thereby contributing to the regulation of gonadal development in farmed fish. Abstract

Cystic echinococcosis (CE), is one of the common parasitic infections of domestic animals and humans caused by the larval stages of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus. This research aimed to identify of CE cysts in cattle isolates from Shiraz slaughterhouse using molecular technique. Thirty CE cysts isolates were collected and total DNA was extracted from protoscolices or the germinal layer of each cyst followed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using cytochrome c oxidase I (cox1) and NADH dehydrogenase subunit 1 (NADH-1) mitochondrial genes (~ 450 bp) and sequencing. The sequence results were compared with available reference sequences in GenBank by BLAST system. Phylogenetic analysis was performed using MEGA 5.0 software and the maximum likelihood method. The results showed that all 30 samples examined in this study were identified as E. granulosus sensu stricto (G1–G3 genotypes) with G1 dominant. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) technology emerges as a sustainable method to convert wet biomass, including food waste and municipal solid waste into high‐energy dense biocoal. This process, conducted at temperatures ranging from 180 to 260°C and pressures of 10–50 bar, effectively transforms the organic material in wet biomass into solid, liquid, and gaseous outputs. The solid product, biocoal, possesses a high carbon concentration and heating values on par with lignite coal, presenting a cleaner alternative to traditional fossil fuels. Despite operational commercial‐scale HTC facilities globally, further adoption across various feedstocks can improve waste management and energy production. The process can achieve energy yields up to 80%, particularly at temperatures favoring the generation of secondary char with higher heating values. HTC not only aids in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through carbon sequestration in solid waste but also promotes environmental sustainability by yielding nutrient‐rich by‐products for agriculture. As a versatile and energy‐efficient solution, HTC technology is a pivotal innovation in waste‐to‐energy conversion, addressing the imperative for sustainable waste management. Other supplementary benefits are presented; they include higher employability, reduction of a nation's reliance on imported energy, and better waste control, therefore considering all pillars of sustainability. Abstract

Adsorbent materials have long been used for remediating environmental contaminants. There is an increasing focus on developing sustainable adsorbent materials for long-term use in environmentally friendly and cost-effective remediation. "Green" or "eco-friendly" sorbent materials are generally prepared from renewable or recycled resources, have minimal toxic effects, involve synthesis processes with minor chemical or energy footprints, have high reusability, and do not contribute to additional waste or contamination. Thus, it is essential for materials to have high sorption capacity, high stability, and reusability. The literature focuses on using low-cost or waste materials to produce sorbent materials for the immobilization of contaminants from soil and water systems. The regeneration possibilities of adsorbents are used to evaluate their cost effectiveness and long-term environmental impact once they are applied at field-scale. This review evaluates sustainable sorbent materials, highlighting their green and eco-friendly qualities for a circular economy, and their contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDG). The synthesis techniques, ecotoxicity, and prospect of reusing adsorbents are highlighted. Abstract

Brønsted basicity is a fundamental chemical property featured by several kinds of inorganic and organic compounds. In this Review, we treat a particularly high basicity resulting from the mechanical entanglement involving two or more molecular subunits in catenanes and rotaxanes. Such entanglement allows a number of basic sites to be in close proximity with each other, highly increasing the proton affinity in comparison with the corresponding, non-entangled counterparts up to obtain superbases, properly defined as mechanically interlocked superbases. In the following pages, the development of this kind of superbases will be described with a historical perusal, starting from the initial, serendipitous findings up to the most recent reports where the strong basic property of entangled molecular units is the object of a rational design. Brønsted basicity can be greatly enhanced by the mechanical entanglement of two or more interlocked molecular subunits within catenanes and rotaxanes. Abstract

This paper proposes an image encryption algorithm based on combined 1D chaotic maps. First, a permutation technique was applied. It was then reorganized into 1D matrices along the rows and columns respectively, which were then shuffled by computing the substituted position indices to obtain the scrambled image. Subsequently, a method of confusion of the scrambled image was used through another generated data map, combined with random sub‐matrices for diffusion, then resulting in an encrypted image. Finally, the proposed cryptosystem was implemented in a single kernel platform developed using the Nios II Software Build Tools processor for Eclipse. A hardware architecture was designed using the Qsys‐built tool which is available in the Quartus II 13.0sp1 environment. The developed single‐core system was implemented using the Cyclone IV EP4CE6E22C8. Robustness evaluation of the cryptosystem was performed through security analysis tests such as histogram analysis, correlation coefficient, differential analysis, and key space analysis to prove that it is of good quality, efficient, fast, and successfully resisting brute force attacks. Abstract

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) converts wet biomass into hydrochar and a process liquid, but aromatic compounds in the products have been reported as a roadblock for soil applications as they can inhibit germination, plant growth, and soil microbial activity. Here, we compared HTC and hydrothermal humification (HTH) of cow manure digestate while varying the initial alkaline content by adding KOH. HTH converted 37.5 wt% of the feedstock to artificial humic acids (A-HAs) found in both solid and liquid, twice that of HTC. HTH reduced phenolic and furanic aromatic compounds by over 70% in solids and 90% in liquids. The A-HAs in HTH resemble natural humic acids (N-HA), based on FTIR, UV–vis spectra, and CHN and XRD analysis. The HTH liquid possesses 60% higher total organic carbon (TOC) than HTC. Although one-third of TOC can be precipitated as A-HA, a high TOC concentration remains in the liquid, which is shown to be mainly organic acids. Therefore, we also evaluated the HTC and HTH liquids for anaerobic biomethane production, and found that compared to the original cow manure digestate, the HTH liquids increased methane yield by 110.3 to 158.6%, a significant enhancement relative to the 17.2% increase seen with HTC liquid. The strong reduction in organic acids during biogas production from HTH liquid indicates the potential for converting soluble byproducts into methane, while maintaining high A-HAs levels in the solid product. Highlights: Hydrothermal humification of the digestate feedstock created about 37.5 wt% artificial humic acids in both solid and liquid phases. Increasing the alkaline content of the reaction media significantly decreased the aromatic content in the process liquid while increasing the concentration of organic acids and sugars. There was little to no gas production observed in the HTH process at higher alkaline contents, indicating carbon preservation in the liquid and solid phases. Anaerobic processing of the hydrothermal humification (HTH) process liquid resulted in a 158.6% increase in methane production compared to the primary biomass. The organic acid concentrations decreased after the anaerobic fermentation, while the main HTH product, artificial humic acids, remained nearly unchanged. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has emerged as a pivotal technology in the battle against climate change and fosters circular economies. Operating within a unique reaction environment characterized by water as a solvent and moderate temperatures at self-generated pressures, HTC efficiently converts biomass residues into valuable bio-based products. Despite HTC's potential—from the management of challenging biomass wastes to the synthesis of advanced carbons and the implementation of biorefineries—it encounters hurdles transitioning from academic exploration to industrial implementation. Gaps persist, from a general comprehension of reaction intricacies to the difficulty of large-scale integration with wastewater treatments, to the management of process water, to the absence of standardized assessment techniques for HTC products. Addressing these challenges demands collaboration to bridge the many scientific sectors touched by HTC. Thus, this article reviews the current state of some hot topics considered crucial for HTC development: It emphasizes the role of HTC as a cornerstone for waste management and biorefineries, highlighting potentialities and challenges for its development. Abstract

Due to a large number of harmful chemicals flowing into the water source in production and life, the water quality deteriorates, and the use value of water is reduced or lost. Biochar has a strong physical adsorption effect, but it can only separate pollutants from water and cannot eliminate pollutants fundamentally. Photocatalytic degradation technology using photocatalysts uses chemical methods to degrade or mineralize organic pollutants, but it is difficult to recover and reuse. Woody biomass has the advantages of huge reserves, convenient access and a low price. Processing woody biomass into biochar and then combining it with photocatalysts has played a complementary role. In this paper, the shortcomings of a photocatalyst and biochar in water treatment are introduced, respectively, and the advantages of a woody biochar-based photocatalyst made by combining them are summarized. The preparation and assembly methods of the woody biochar-based photocatalyst starting from the preparation of biochar are listed, and the water treatment efficiency of the woody biochar-based photocatalyst using different photocatalysts is listed. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with cognitive impairment, with or without history of stroke. The risk of developing cognitive impairment is increased after clinical stroke. Prospective registries confirm the increased risk of both vascular and Alzheimer's dementia in patients with AF. The purported mechanistic links between AF and cognitive impairment are clinical stroke, subclinical cerebral small-vessel disease, autonomic dysfunction, and systemic and neuroinflammation. Several shared risk factors and genetics also contribute to this interplay. 50. Laser Retrieval of Cemented Zirconia Single-Unit Implant Restoration: A Pilot Study, Part I. Force Values.

Abstract

Purpose: To measure the retrieval force required to remove 1.5-mm–thick CAD/CAM zirconia copings cemented on zirconia (Zr) and titanium (Ti) stock implant abutments after a single application of erbium-doped yttrium scandium gallium garnet (Er:YSGG) laser. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 monolithic zirconia copings were cemented on Zr and Ti implant abutments with either a resin-modified glass-ionomer (RelyX Luting Plus, 3M; Rx) or a zinc oxide eugenol cement (Temp-Bond, Kerr; Tb). These abutment coping specimens were randomly divided into 12 groups based on laser application (vs control [C]), abutment type (Zr vs Ti), cement (Rx vs Tb), and storage condition (dry [D] vs saline water [W]). Er:YSGG laser was applied at 6 W, 30% water–60% air, and 20 Hz (300 mJ/pulse energy) postcementation following a defined pattern. The force required to remove the cemented copings from their abutments was measured on a universal testing machine. Descriptive statistics, multifactor analysis of variance (ANOVA), and post hoc Tukey honest significant difference tests (α = .05) were performed. Results: The mean peak force values at removal of the Zr abutment groups were 470.3 ± 151.33 N (Zr-Rx-C), 161.7 ± 19.29 N (Zr-Rx-D), 316.03 ± 95.24 N (Zr-Rx-W), 103.27 ± 24.53 N (Zr-Tb-C), 39.33 ± 6.21 N (Zr-Tb-D), and 20.33 ± 6.45 N (Zr-Tb-W); and of the Ti abutment groups were 349.80 ± 106.82 N (Ti-Rx-C), 84.63 ± 14.02 N (Ti-Rx-D), 177 ± 62.57 N (Ti-Rx-W), 54.77 ± 9.10 N (Ti-Tb-C), 22.67 ± 4.32 N (Ti-Tb-D), and 11.57 ± 2.30 N (Ti-Tb-W). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were drawn: Er:YSGG laser allows for easier removal of cemented zirconia copings with lower removal forces, with Ti abutment specimens requiring lower forces than Zr abutment specimens. No significant difference was seen between laser and control groups for Tb compared to Rx. Er:YSGG laser shows great clinical promise for predictable retrievability of cemented monolithic zirconia implant crowns, especially with stronger resin-based cement.
