- Abstract
Evidence from North American pay practices was used to examine the question of whether the "old employment contact," according to which employees promised to exchange hard work for job security, has truly been replaced by a "new employment contract" based more on market forces. The study analyzed data from the following sources: (1) the Current Population Survey (CPS) with Benefits Supplements; (2) a survey by the Hay Consulting Group; (3) the Cleveland Salary Survey (CSS); (4) the Indiana/Japan data set; and (5) the Fairness Survey. The study documented the rising overall inequality in wages that others have observed. The rising returns on skills emerged as the main change in the labor market in recent years. Little evidence was found to support the theory that shocks to product markets (deregulation and rising imports) or to labor markets (local unemployment rates and wage rates) affect the level of wages paid by large employers. The following items are appended: an illustrative model of human capital theory; discussions of the study data sets; a discussion of whether deregulation or growing imports have weakened wage structures; and a discussion and the complete results of the layoff questions. embryonic structures ,reproductive and urinary physiology ,female genital diseases and pregnancy complications - Abstract
Preeclampsia is a serious complication of pregnancy, affecting both maternal and fetal health. In genome-wide association meta-analysis of European and Central Asian mothers, we identify sequence variants that associate with preeclampsia in the maternal genome at ZNF831/20q13 and FTO/16q12. These are previously established variants for blood pressure (BP) and the FTO variant has also been associated with body mass index (BMI). Further analysis of BP variants establishes that variants at MECOM/3q26, FGF5/4q21 and SH2B3/12q24 also associate with preeclampsia through the maternal genome. We further show that a polygenic risk score for hypertension associates with preeclampsia. However, comparison with gestational hypertension indicates that additional factors modify the risk of preeclampsia. Studies to identify maternal variants associated with preeclampsia have been limited by sample size. Here, the authors meta-analyze eight GWAS of 9,515 preeclamptic women, identifying five variants associated with preeclampsia and showing that genetic predisposition to hypertension is a major risk factor for preeclampsia.

embryonic structures ,female genital diseases and pregnancy complications ,reproductive and urinary physiology - Abstract
Preeclampsia, which affects approximately 5% of pregnancies, is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal death. The causes of preeclampsia remain unclear, but there is evidence for inherited susceptibility. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have not identified maternal sequence variants of genome-wide significance that replicate in independent data sets. We report the first GWAS of offspring from preeclamptic pregnancies and discovery of the first genome-wide significant susceptibility locus (rs4769613; P = 5.4 × 10(-11)) in 4,380 cases and 310,238 controls. This locus is near the FLT1 gene encoding Fms-like tyrosine kinase 1, providing biological support, as a placental isoform of this protein (sFlt-1) is implicated in the pathology of preeclampsia. The association was strongest in offspring from pregnancies in which preeclampsia developed during late gestation and offspring birth weights exceeded the tenth centile. An additional nearby variant, rs12050029, associated with preeclampsia independently of rs4769613. The newly discovered locus may enhance understanding of the pathophysiology of preeclampsia and its subtypes.

12 pp. (1993)., This paper reports a search for excited electrons at the HERA electron-proton collider. In a sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 26 nb−, no evidence was found for any resonant state decaying into e−γ, νW− or e−Z0. Limits on the coupling strength of an excited electron have been determined for masses between 45 and 225 GeV. This study also reports the observation of the wide-angle eγ Compton scattering process.

13 pp. (1993)., In deep inelastic, neutral current scattering of electrons and protons at s=296GeV, we observe in the ZEUS detector events with a large rapidity gap in the hadronic final state. They occur in the region of small Bjorken x and are observed up to Q2 of 100 GeV2. They account for about 5% of the events with Q2⩾10 GeV2. Their general properties are inconsistent with the dominant mechanism of deep inelastic scattering, where color is transferred between the scattered quark and the proton remnant, and suggest that the underlying production mechanism is the diffractive dissociation of the virtual photon.

15 pp. (1993)., A sample of events with two distinct jets, in addition to the proton remnant, has been identified in deep inelastic, neutral current ep interactions recorded at HERA by the ZEUS experiment. For these events, the mass of the hadronic system ranges from 40 to 260 GeV. The salient features of the observed jet production agree with the predictions of higher order QCD.

14 pp. (1993)., Results are presented on neutral current, deep inelastic scattering measured in collisions of 26.7 GeV electrons and 820 GeV protons. The events typically populate a range in Q2 from 10 to 100 GeV2. The values of x extend down to x ∼ 10$^{−4}$ which is two orders of magnitude lower than previously measured at such Q2 values in fixed target experiments. The measured cross sections are in accord with the extrapolations of current parametrisations of parton distributions.

EXTRACORPOREAL membrane oxygenation , *OXYGENATORS - Abstract
Polymethylpentene (PMP) oxygenators, utilised for ECMO, are commonly believed to be resistant to plasma leakage. Whilst uncommon, plasma leakage has been previously reported with PMP fibres, both in vivo and in vitro. We describe a paediatric ECMO case during which plasma leakage occurred and oxygenator function gradually deteriorated, ultimately necessitating device replacement. To our knowledge, this is the first case of plasma leakage described using a PMP device during paediatric ECMO. Subsequent investigation is described, demonstrating that a protein coating reduces the free passage of solution across the PMP membrane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy which is given to the patient after the failure of medical and surgical options who are exposed to the effects of uncompensated insensible water loss which results in hypernatraemia. The focus of the study is to explore the degree of water loss that occurs from the Hilite 2400LT oxygenator and to determine the amount of heat or humidity that alleviates water loss.

Reputation has emerged as an important concept in organizational research. One measure of reputation is Fortune Magazine's annual 'America's Most Admired Companies' survey. Despite its widespread use, there are concerns that the data are strongly influenced by a firm's previous financial performance. This has led some scholars to conclude that there is little new to be learned from the series that cannot be ascertained from traditional financial performance data. Results of a study conducted by Brown and Perry using the Fortune survey from 1991 are often cited as evidence of the strong correlation between financial performance and the Fortune data. The goal of this study is to analyze more recent Fortune reputation data than that used in Brown and Perry in order to examine whether the relationship between Fortune's reputation measures and financial performance has changed. We also examine the impact of industry level controls on this relationship. The main finding of our study is that the strong relationship between measures of financial performance and the Fortune overall ratings is far weaker when more recent data are examined. We also find that controlling for industry effects is important when using the Fortune data. The implication for future research is that Fortune Magazine's 'America's Most Admired Companies' list can continue to be a useful and valid source of data to explore the considerable variance in organizational reputation that remains unexplained. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of financial restatements by US companies to help students, professors, and practitioners gain a better understanding of restatements. Data from restatement activity that occurred between January 1, 1997 and June 30, 2002 is presented and relevant literature is cited to discus the players involved in restatements, the causes of restatements and their impacts. Design/methodology/approach -- A sample of 919 restatement announcements compiled by the General Accounting Office (GAO) that occurred between January 1, 1997 and June 30, 2002 is analyzed. The data and the relevant literature aye used to examine the roles of companies, auditing firms, and the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) in the financial reporting process and show how they are involved in prompting restatements. Literature is also reviewed on the root causes of restatements and their impact. Findings -- The misstatements that lead m earnings restatements are driven by a variety of forces, the most often studied and discussed being deceptive accounting practices by managers. The results of these restatements include a decline in the market value of the firm, an increase in the cost of capital, a loss of reputation for the finn and managers and an overall loss of confidence from investors. Key players in restatements by US companies are the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the restating firms' auditors and the management of the restating firms. Restatements prompted by the SEC tend to be larger than those prompted by other entities. They also tend to involve firms with high profitability before the restatement. The Sarbanes-Oxley act is the latest significant piece of legislation that impacts financial reporting by firms. Research limitations/implications -- Data on US restatements occurring between January 1, 1997 and June 30, 2002 are presented. Restatements are a continuing, global, phenomenon so studies involving restatements by firms in various countries and from more recent periods would be useful. Practical implications -- This paper provides a useful overview of restatement activity in the USA for any individual looking to become more familiar with the topic. Ideas for future research are presented. Originality/value -- This paper fills a hole in the literature by providing data and citing relevant literature to provide an overview of accounting restatement activity in the USA. This study examines participation of African-Americans on the boards and board committees of the US Fortune 500. Prior work suggests the use of committee assignment to discern active versus figurehead involvement on boards. We use a logistic regression model that controls for director traits, firm characteristics and director resource-dependence roles to compare the odds that a black director will be assigned to key committees to those for a white director. We find that black directors are more (less) likely than whites to sit on audit and public affairs (executive) committees. Black female directors are more likely than both white females and black males to serve on finance committees. Thus there is some evidence that race plays a role in determining assignment to corporate board committees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

GENETICS , *AMINO acids , *HEART diseases , *G proteins , *GLYCINE , *CARDIOLOGY - Abstract
The β-1 adrenoceptor is an archetypal G-coupled protein receptor that controls sympathetic responses in the heart, kidney and adipocytes. It has been widely exploited as a drug target with the development of antagonists to treat cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, angina and heart failure. Signalling through the receptor is modulated by desensitization and β1- adrenoceptor down-regulation. It is also affected by in vitro substitution of specific amino acid residues within the β-1 adrenoceptor. Amino acid substitutions also occur naturally due to polymorphic variation within the human β-1 adrenoceptor gene itself. Since these variants are common (typically being present in > 5% of the population), the pharmacogenetic implications are enormous. A number of these variants have been identified, although two have been the particular focus of recent publications: a serine to glycine substitution at position 49 (49S > G) and an arginine to glycine at position 389 (389R > G). The data on the in vitro behaviour of these two receptor variants is reviewed here, along with the evidence that they may affect both the risk of cardiovascular disease and the therapeutic response to β-1 adrenoceptor antagonists. EQUITY (Law) ,AMERICAN depository receipts ,FOREIGN investments ,CAPITAL movements ,MONETARY policy - Abstract
American depository receipts (ADRs) are dollar-denominated, negotiable instruments issued by a depository bank to represent ownership of a foreign security in the bank's possession. They are the primary method employed by Latin American corporations to raise equity capital in the United States. One frequently overlooked aspect about ADRs is that their investment performance provides a gauge not only on management's performance but also a measure of the foreign government's ability to provide a political, legal, economic and social climate that is conducive to international investment. This paper investigates the returns and risks associated with foreign investment in Mexico and South America. First, we show that the weekly returns to Latin American stocks are weakly correlated with the U.S. stock market which suggests that they can reduce the risk of a portfolio that is fully diversified within the U.S. market. Second, we find that ADRs from this region are more risky than U.S. common stocks. However, we find little evidence that foreign exchange rate risk should be a major factor in the investment decision. Third, we examine the effects of the devaluation of the Mexican peso and show that political factors can significantly increase the risk and reduce the return to foreign investment. Finally, the results show that investors do not pay a significantly larger relative transaction cost premium for investing in Mexican and South American equity vis-à-vis U.S. common stock. We conclude that ADRs provide the ability for the U.S. investor to realize potentially superior gains from companies located in these emerging economies. However, the willingness by the U.S. investor to disinvest means that politicians and managers have a powerful incentive to continue reforms that lead to improved standards of living for their citizens and emnlovees.
