This study aimed at assessing the relation between family support, mental health and risk behavior. 776 undergraduate students participated in this study, selected from a total of 1775. Among these, 388(50%) were men and 388 (50%) were women, with a mean age of 21.53 and standard deviation of 2.38 years. The Perception of Family Support Inventory, the Self Reporting Questionnaire, and a Student´s Behavior Identification Questionnaire were the instruments used. Correlations between scores of the three instruments were found, thus showing the link between these three variables. Regression analysis using the stepwise model verified that mental health, risk behaviors of self-inflicted violence, sexual violence and a few activities related to leisure time predicted the dependent variable of total Family Support, where mental health was the predominant factor. In secondary analysis, differences between genders regarding mental health were found, showing that women were the most affected and men had a higher frequency of risk behaviors. Studying these constructs is important for generating knowledge about risk and protective factors in mental health and constitutes a starting point for the creation of prevention and intervention programs

The literature on attachment is unclear regarding the most appropriate level of measurement for this construct. This study aimed to assess the measurement level of the EBRAPEG-A scale. As a secondary objective, the original 93-item EBRAPEG-A was reduced using data-driven methods and this new reduced version was compared to a 34-item version identified in the literature. A total of 808 Brazilians aged between 18 and 67 years, 82.4% of whom were women, participated in this study. The data-driven reduction method produced a 27-item scale, with factor scores showing a strong correlation with the 34-item version. Taxometric analysis of the 34-item version suggested a slight tendency towards a dimensional model, while the analysis of the 27-item scale was inconclusive. The study discusses how both reduced versions of the EBRAPEG-A can be used to assess the attachment construct as a dimensional variable and outlines expectations for future research. Dark personality traits are amongst the most popular research topics recently. In 2018 the Dark Core of personality was proposed as a common core to capture all aversive subclinical manifestations. In this study, we aimed at investigating how individuals with high scores on the Dark Core perceive control (i.e., internally or externally) and express their spirituality. Participants were 614 adults, mostly females (85.17%), aged from 18 to 73 years-old (M = 36.00; SD = 12.26), and identified themselves as agnostics (22.63%) or Catholics (19.05%). Participants responded to a measure that assessed the Dark Core of personality (D35), the Locus of Control Scale (ELOCUS), and the WHOQOL-spirituality, religiousness, and personal beliefs (WHOQOL-SRPB). We used a path analysis model to estimate their connection. Results indicated that the Dark Core better predicts external locus of control, which respectively predicts connect, strength, and faith, which can be considered as spiritual coping strategies. We concluded that men and women tend to blame external forces when things do not go their way and use personal beliefs to relieve emotional distress. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate if students with developmental dyslexia (DD) have more behavior problems and depressive symptoms than students without learning difficulties. Method: Participants were 61 students, aged 7-14 years, including 31 with interdisciplinary DD diagnosis and 30 without learning disabilities. We collected data from parents, using the children's behavior checklist (CBCL), and from students, using the children's depression inventory (CDI). Results: The dd group had higher CBCl averages for anxiety, depression, withdrawal, rule-breaking behaviors, aggressiveness, and social, attentional and thought problems. They also showed higher results for the internalizing and externalizing categories, others and total. In the CDI, DD students had higher averages for total score and for the following symptoms: negative self-evaluation, guilt, suicidal thoughts, feeling concern, performance comparison, sleeping difficulties, fatigue, and problems in interacting with peers at school. Conclusions: We discuss the results in terms of implications for DD diagnosis and intervention. Parent reports indicate a higher frequency of behavior problems in students with DD diagnosis. The Proposed Specifiers for Conduct Disorder (PSCD) is a promising novel scale that measures psychopathic traits and includes an additional conduct disorder factor that taps the antisocial dimension of psychopathy. The current study sought to broaden the application of PSCD by examining the factor structure, convergent and discriminant validity, and connections to delinquency in a young adult sample ( N  = 450; M  = 31.91 years, SD  = 13.02 years) obtained from the Brazilian community. Participants completed a self-report version of the PSCD along with other theoretically meaningful psychometric measures. Results supported a four-factor intercorrelated factor structure, with male participants scoring significantly higher than female participants on the PSCD total, grandiose-manipulative (GM), callous-unemotional (CU), daring-impulsive (DI), and conduct disorder (CD) factors. The four factors of the PSCD mainly presented positive, moderate to high significant inter-correlations and adequate reliability. The convergent validity with measures of the dark tetrad of personality, difficulties in emotion regulation, and self-reported delinquency also revealed positive moderate significant associations. The aim of the study was to search for evidence of validity based on the relationship with external variables, and incrementally for the Child-Youth Anxiety Scale (CYAS). The convenience sample consists of 500 children and adolescents aged 10 to 18 years. The correlation between the scores of the CYAS factors and the scores of the instruments of the other constructs ADHD (MTA-SNAP-IV), anxiety (OQPS), rumination (QRR) and mood states (BRUMS) was initially performed, finding medium and strong correlations, which shows a satisfactory linear relation between the constructs to attest validity based on the relation with external variables. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was also performed with total MTA-SNAP-IV and its factors as criterion. In the modeling, it was possible to observe that, when introduced in the models, the CYAS becomes the latent variable with the greatest contribution, decreasing and canceling the OQPS contribution. These results affirm incremental validity for the CYAS.

The present article aimed to analyze the relationships between perception of family support, levels of depression, anxiety and hopelessness in alcohol or drug dependent patients (AOD). Participated of this study 97 patients under treatment, aged between 18 and 58 years, of both genders from six private institutions for treatment of drug dependency, located in Santos-SP/Brazil. Participants responded to the Inventory of Perceived Family Support-IPSF, the Beck Depression Inventory-BDI, Beck Anxiety Inventory-BAI, Hopelessness Scale-BHS and Criteria for substance abuse or dependence at DSM-IV TR. Results indicated negative correlations between perceived family support and levels of depression, anxiety and hopelessness. Moreover, family support proved to be a conditional variable for levels of anxiety and depression. These results indicated that the perception of family support may be an important social support for the patient with AOD.
