Food safety, particularly concerning foods contaminated by toxic chemicals, has emerged as a pervasive societal concern. The prevalence of food contaminants has spurred both scientific communities and industries to develop highly sensitive and selective sensors for rapid and precise food authentication. Noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) have garnered significant attention in this regard due to their exceptional properties, including high sensitivity, selectivity, stability, target binding affinity, and versatility for modification to detect specific contaminants. Moreover, the readout of such sensors is relatively straightforward, as their resulting color change can be observed with the naked eye. This Review aims to delve into the current strategies involving various noble metal NPs as colorimetric nanosensors in food safety monitoring applications. It begins by elucidating their working principles, encompassing localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), enzyme-based approaches, and other methodologies. Subsequently, the material properties of commonly utilized noble metal NPs, including those of gold, silver, palladium, platinum, and copper, are meticulously examined, providing comprehensive overviews of the benefits and drawbacks associated with each material. Furthermore, this Review summarizes the latest use cases of noble metal NPs in diverse food safety monitoring applications, ranging from the detection of heavy metal contaminants to veterinary and pesticide drug residues and foodborne pathogens. Lastly, it addresses the remaining challenges in this field and proposes feasible solutions, offering insights into future research directions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Discovering sources of transition metals, such as Ni, Co, and Mn, has become crucial due to their broad applicability, particularly as electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Upcycled spent batteries have emerged as alternatives for transition metal sources for the OER electrocatalysts. In this work, Ni–Co–Mn oxalates were extracted from the spent LiNixCoyMnzO2 (NCM) cathode of lithium-ion batteries. The extracted oxalates were further processed via ball milling as a rapid and scalable mechanochemical route to engineer their structures. After calcination, Ni–Co–Mn oxides with nanosized granules on the surface that mainly consist of MnCo2O4 were obtained. With a correlation of morphology and trimetallic oxide formation with the OER catalytic performance, Ni–Co–Mn oxides exhibit OER overpotentials of 367 and 732 mV in alkaline and neutral media, respectively, showing OER catalytic activity in a wide pH range. The results indicate that ball milling can induce particle size reduction and bond formation between metals to facilitate mixed-metal oxide formation. Furthermore, the resulting material is also applicable as the catalyst in the air cathode of Zn-air batteries, where the battery achieved a power density of 85.42 mW cm–2 and 100 h of cycling stability, showing comparability with a battery with a Pt/C–Ir/C catalyst. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2), a promising two‐dimensional photothermal material, possesses the capability to convert solar irradiation into thermal energy. This conversion is beneficial for processes like wastewater treatment and seawater desalination. Nevertheless, the influence of the surface chemical properties of MoS2, particularly its wettability, on the evaporation rate of water confined to the surface remains unexplored. In our study, we demonstrate that the wettability degree of MoS2 significantly influences its water evaporation rate performance. Interestingly, this parameter can be simply and accurately modulated by altering the synthesis time of MoS2. We synthesized MoS2 via a simple hydrothermal method at three different durations: 16, 20, and 24 h, at 200°C. Subsequently, we impregnated the resultant MoS2 onto air‐laid paper (ALP), forming a solar‐driven evaporator system. We found that the MoS2 nanosheets synthesized within the shortest duration (MoS2‐16 h) exhibited the highest evaporation rate of 1.77 kg m−2 h−1, along with 92% energy efficiency. MoS2‐16 h resulted in MoS2 rich in defects, featuring the largest surface area and the smallest contact angle. The hydrophilic areas of MoS2‐16 h facilitated the continuous diffusion of water molecules through defect sites, treating them as contact lines. Additionally, the expansive surface area introduced a larger region for light absorption, enhancing water‐solid interactions. The presence of molybdenum oxide on the surface of the nanosheet system also contributed to superior wettability behavior. Notably, all the tested MoS2/ALP systems in this study displayed excellent performance in salt rejection and heavy metal ion concentration reduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ZnO-based photoanodes absorb a limited spectrum of light, and their photogenerated electrons and holes combine easily. Such features limit their photoelectrochemical activity. Herein, we report the synthesis of ternary heterostructures comprising ZnO nanorods (NRs) and ZnS nanoparticles wrapped in MoS2 nanosheets (ZnO/ZnS/MoS2, ZSM) directly grown on a substrate by a low-cost hydrothermal route and their performance as anodes for photoelectrochemical water splitting. The ZSM heterostructures exhibit a sixfold photocurrent density of 0.72 mA cm–2, a fourfold maximum applied bias photon-to-current efficiency of 0.28% compared to bare ZnO NRs, and excellent photostability. These improvements in the overall photoelectrochemical activity are due to enhanced light absorption in the visible light range, higher surface active sites, and efficient charge separation enabled by the introduction of a ZnS/MOS2 coating. Our study demonstrates an alternative architecture design of ternary heterostructures with increased photoelectrochemical activity. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting is an interesting approach to harness clean and renewable solar energy to generate green hydrogen. To this end, metal oxides (MOs) have been investigated as photoelectrodes (photoanode and photocathode) due to their tunable optoelectronic properties and abundance, but achieving an efficient overall performance based on single MOs is very challenging due to their narrow visible light absorption, unfavorable band position, low charge mobilities, and limited stability. Heterostructuring MOs with other materials has therefore been proposed in the literature. In this review, we specifically highlight photoelectrodes based on the heterostructure of MOs and an emerging group of 2D materials consisting of mono elemental (Xenes), carbides/nitrides/carbonitrides (MXenes), boron carbon nitride (BCNs), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), and bismuth oxyhalides (BiOX). The benefits of the formation of MOs/2D materials heterostructures are outlined, and the state-of-the-art of MOs/2D materials heterostructures as photoelectrodes with various architectures are extensively discussed. Finally, a critical outlook on fundamental challenges and potential future directions in the development of MOs/2D materials heterostructures is presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While photovoltaic blends based on non‐fullerene acceptors are touted for their thermal stability, this type of acceptor tends to crystallize, which can result in a gradual decrease in photovoltaic performance and affects the reproducibility of the devices. Two halogenated indacenodithienothiophene‐based acceptors that readily co‐crystallize upon mixing are studied, which indicates that the use of an acceptor mixture alone does not guarantee the formation of a disordered mixture. The addition of the donor polymer to the acceptor mixture readily suppresses the crystallization, which results in a fine‐grained ternary blend with nanometer‐sized domains that do not coarsen due to a high Tg ≈ 200 °C. As a result, annealing at temperatures of up to 170 °C does not markedly affect the photovoltaic performance of ternary devices, in contrast to binary devices that suffer from acceptor crystallization in the active layer. The results indicate that the ternary approach enables the use of high‐temperature processing protocols, which are needed for upscaling and high‐throughput fabrication of organic solar cells. Further, ternary devices display a stable photovoltaic performance at 130 °C for at least 205 h, which indicates that the use of acceptor mixtures allows to fabricate devices with excellent thermal stability. Accurate complex dielectric functions are critical to accelerate the development of rationally designed metal alloy systems for nanophotonic applications, and to thereby unlock the potential of alloying for tailoring nanostructure optical properties. To date, however, accurate alloy dielectric functions are widely lacking. Here, a time‐dependent density‐functional theory computational framework is employed to compute a comprehensive binary alloy dielectric function library for the late transition metals most commonly employed in plasmonics (Ag, Au, Cu, Pd, Pt). Excellent agreement is found between electrodynamic simulations based on these dielectric functions and selected alloy systems experimentally scrutinized in 10 at% composition intervals. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the dielectric functions can vary in very non‐linear fashion with composition, which paves the way for non‐trivial optical response optimization by tailoring material composition. The presented dielectric function library is thus a key resource for the development of alloy nanomaterials for applications in nanophotonics, optical sensors, and photocatalysis. Surfactants and stabilizers are always present on the surfaces of colloidal nanocrystals due to their critical function in promoting selective facet growth and since they are essential to prevent aggregate formation in solution. After synthesis, however, the presence of these molecules on the surface of a nanocrystal is problematic because they potentially significantly alter the nature of the interaction with the environment, which is critical for sensor or catalysis applications. Here, we quantitatively scrutinize this effect experimentally for the four most common stabilizers in Pd nanoparticle synthesis: cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), tetraoctylammonium bromide (TOAB), cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC), and poly-(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP). We use the surface-catalyzed hydrogen sorption and hydride formation reaction in Pd as a model system, due to its high relevance for hydrogen sensors. Specifically, we map in detail the (de)-hydrogenation kinetics of arrays of nanofabricated Pd nanodisks in the presence of the surfactants and benchmark it with an uncoated Pd reference. As the key results, we find that the cationic surfactants significantly decelerate the (de)-hydrogenation surface reaction, with the amplitude of deceleration mediated by the interplay between the halide-ion–Pd surface interaction strength and surfactant surface density. In contrast, a polymeric PVP coating is found to significantly accelerate hydrogen sorption. For the Pd-based hydrogen sensor application, our findings thus provide important insights for the appropriate choice of a surfactant to minimize the negative impact on hydrogen sorption kinetics and thus hydrogen detection response/recovery times. In a wider perspective, our results dramatically show how nanoparticles can attain different properties depending on what types of surfactants and stabilizers are present on their surface and how critical the quantitative understanding of their impact is for a specific application. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of tandem organic photovoltaics (OPVs) is currently limited by the lack of suitable wide-bandgap materials for the front-cell. Here, two new acceptor molecules, namely IDTA and IDTTA, with optical bandgaps (E optg) of 1.90 and 1.75 eV, respectively, are synthesized and studied for application in OPVs. When PBDB-T is used as the donor polymer, single-junction cells with PCE of 7.4%, for IDTA, and 10.8%, for IDTTA, are demonstrated. The latter value is the highest PCE reported to date for wide-bandgap (E optg ≥ 1.7 eV) bulk-heterojunction OPV cells. The higher carrier mobility in IDTTA-based cells leads to improved charge extraction and higher fill-factor than IDTA-based devices. Moreover, IDTTA-based OPVs show significantly improved shelf-lifetime and thermal stability, both critical for any practical applications. With the aid of optical-electrical device modelling, we combined PBDB-T:IDTTA, as the front-cell, with PTB7-Th:IEICO-4F, as the back-cell, to realize tandem OPVs with open circuit voltage of 1.66 V, short circuit current of 13.6 mA cm−2 and a PCE of 15%; in excellent agreement with our theoretical predictions. Grain boundaries separate crystallites in solids and influence material properties, as widely documented for bulk materials. In nanomaterials, however, investigations of grain boundaries are very challenging and just beginning. Here, we report the systematic mapping of the role of grain boundaries in the hydrogenation phase transformation in individual Pd nanoparticles. Employing multichannel single-particle plasmonic nanospectroscopy, we observe large variation in particle-specific hydride-formation pressure, which is absent in hydride decomposition. Transmission Kikuchi diffraction suggests direct correlation between length and type of grain boundaries and hydride-formation pressure. This correlation is consistent with tensile lattice strain induced by hydrogen localized near grain boundaries as the dominant factor controlling the phase transition during hydrogen absorption. In contrast, such correlation is absent for hydride decomposition, suggesting a different phase-transition pathway. In a wider context, our experimental setup represents a powerful platform to unravel microstructure-function correlations at the individual-nanoparticle level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hydrogen gas is rapidly approaching a global breakthrough as a carbon-free energy vector. In such a hydrogen economy, safety sensors for hydrogen leak detection will be an indispensable element along the entire value chain, from the site of hydrogen production to the point of consumption, due to the high flammability of hydrogen-air mixtures. To stimulate and guide the development of such sensors, industrial and governmental stakeholders have defined sets of strict performance targets, which are yet to be entirely fulfilled. In this Perspective, we summarize recent efforts and discuss research strategies for the development of hydrogen sensors that aim at meeting the set performance goals. In the first part, we describe the state-of-the-art for fast and selective hydrogen sensors at the research level, and we identify nanostructured Pd transducer materials as the common denominator in the best performing solutions. As a consequence, in the second part, we introduce the fundamentals of the Pd-hydrogen interaction to lay the foundation for a detailed discussion of key strategies and Pd-based material design rules necessary for the development of next generation high-performance nanostructured Pd-based hydrogen sensors that are on par with even the most stringent and challenging performance targets.

The highly localized sensitivity of metallic nanoparticles sustaining localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) enables detection of minute events occurring close to the particle surface and forms the basis for nanoplasmonic sensing. To date, nanoplasmonic sensors typically consist of two-dimensional (2D) nanoparticle arrays and can therefore only probe processes that occur within the array plane, leaving unaddressed the potential of sensing in three dimensions (3D). Here, we present a plasmonic metasurface comprising arrays of stacked Ag nanodisks separated by a thick SiO 2 dielectric layer, which, through rational design, exhibit two distinct and spectrally separated LSPR sensing peaks and corresponding spatially separated sensing locations in the axial direction. This arrangement thus enables real-time plasmonic sensing in 3D. As a proof-of-principle, we successfully determine in a single experiment the layer-specific glass transition temperatures of a bilayer polymer thin film of poly(methyl methacrylate), PMMA, and poly(methyl methacrylate)/poly(methacrylic acid), P(MMA-MAA). Our work thus demonstrates a strategy for nanoplasmonic sensor design and utilization to simultaneously probe local chemical or physical processes at spatially different locations. In a wider perspective, it stimulates further development of sensors that employ multiple detection elements to generate distinct and spectrally individually addressable LSPR modes.

Hydrogen sensors are a prerequisite for the implementation of a hydrogen economy due to the high flammability of hydrogen-air mixtures. They are to comply with the increasingly stringent requirements set by stakeholders, such as the automotive industry and manufacturers of hydrogen safety systems, where sensor deactivation is a severe but widely unaddressed problem. In response, we report intrinsically deactivation-resistant nanoplasmonic hydrogen sensors enabled by a rationally designed ternary PdAuCu alloy nanomaterial, which combines the identified best intrinsic attributes of the constituent binary Pd alloys. This way, we achieve extraordinary hydrogen sensing metrics in synthetic air and poisoning gas background, simulating real application conditions. Specifically, we find a detection limit in the low ppm range, hysteresis-free response over 5 orders of magnitude hydrogen pressure, subsecond response time at room temperature, long-term stability, and, as the key, excellent resistance to deactivating species like carbon monoxide, notably without application of any protective coatings. This constitutes an important step forward for optical hydrogen sensor technology, as it enables application under demanding conditions and provides a blueprint for further material and performance optimization by combining and concerting intrinsic material assets in multicomponent nanoparticles. In a wider context, our findings highlight the potential of rational materials design through alloying of multiple elements for gas sensor development, as well as the potential of engineered metal alloy nanoparticles in nanoplasmonics and catalysis.

Hydride-forming metal nanoparticles sustaining localized surface plasmon resonance have emerged as prototypical material to study the fundamentals of hydrogen-induced phase transformations. They have also been proposed as signal transducers in next-generation hydrogen sensors. However, despite high current interest in hydrogen sorption by nanomaterials in general and such sensors in particular, the correlations between nanoparticle size, shape, and composition, the amount of hydrogen absorbed, and the obtained optical response have not been systematically experimentally studied. Focusing on hydrogenated Pd, PdAu- and PdCu-alloy nanoparticles, which are of particular interest in hysteresis-free plasmonic hydrogen sensing, we find that at practically important Au/Pd and Cu/Pd ratios the optical response to hydrogen concentration is linear and, more interestingly, can be described by a single universal linear trend if constructed as a function of the H/Pd ratio, independent of alloy composition. In addition to this correlation, we establish that the amplitude of optical signal change is defined solely by the spectral plasmon resonance position in the non-hydrogenated state for a specific nanoparticle composition. Thus, it can be maximized by red-shifting the LSPR into the NIR spectral range via tailoring the particle size and shape. These findings further establish plasmonic sensing as an effective tool for studying metal-hydrogen interactions in nanoparticles of complex chemical composition. They also represent universal design rules for metal-hydride-based plasmonic hydrogen sensors, and our theoretical analysis predicts that they are applicable not only to the H/Pd/Au or H/Pd/Cu system investigated here but also to other H/Pd/Metal combinations.

Nanoplasmonic sensors typically comprise arrangements of noble metal nanoparticles on a dielectric support. Thus, they are intrinsically characterized by surface topography with corrugations at the 10-100 nm length scale. While irrelevant in some bio- and chemosensing applications, it is also to be expected that the surface topography significantly influences the interaction between solids, fluids, nanoparticles and (bio)molecules, and the nanoplasmonic sensor surface. To address this issue, we present a wafer-scale nanolithography-based fabrication approach for high-temperature compatible, chemically inert, topographically flat, and laterally homogeneous nanoplasmonic sensor chips. We demonstrate their sensing performance on three different examples, for which we also carry out a direct comparison with a traditional nanoplasmonic sensor with representative surface corrugation. Specifically, we (i) quantify the film-thickness dependence of the glass transition temperature in poly(methyl metacrylate) thin films, (ii) characterize the adsorption and specific binding kinetics of the avidin-biotinylated bovine serum albumin protein system, and (iii) analyze supported lipid bilayer formation on SiO 2 surfaces.

The recent market introduction of hydrogen fuel cell cars and the prospect of a hydrogen economy have drastically accelerated the need for safe and accurate detection of hydrogen. In this Letter, we investigate the use of arrays of nanofabricated Pd-Au alloy nanoparticles as plasmonic optical hydrogen sensors. By increasing the amount of Au in the alloy nanoparticles up to 25 atom %, we are able to suppress the hysteresis between hydrogen absorption and desorption, thereby increasing the sensor accuracy to below 5% throughout the investigated 1 mbar to 1 bar hydrogen pressure range. Furthermore, we observe an 8-fold absolute sensitivity enhancement at low hydrogen pressures compared to sensors made of pure Pd, and an improved sensor response time to below one second within the 0-40 mbar pressure range, that is, below the flammability limit, by engineering the nanoparticle size.
