Chronic stress is a social health determinant associated with many persistent health conditions and health disparities for midlife Black women. Midlife Black women in the United States are exposed to multiple, competing stressors, increasing their risk for adverse health outcomes. The objective of the current study was to illicit information about the key life stressors experienced by midlife Black women. Focus groups were conducted using a convenience sample of midlife Black women (N = 11, age range = 41 to 54 years). Coding and thematic analysis identified four primary sources of stress: workplace, parenting, finances, and social media. Gendered racism and discrimination and life imbalance emerged as underlying stressors linked to the Strong Black Woman persona. This persona prioritizes resilience and self-reliance while suppressing self-care. The article contextualizes Jim Crow as a definitive form of structural violence, as the architect of spatial violence, and as the predicate of direct violence in Cincinnati, Ohio. Topics covered include the spatial shaping of structural violence and the legacy of dispossession and interpersonal violence within the parameters shaping African American women's lives, and the sexual, physical and derogatory linguistic violence that the women experienced.

There is unquestionably a buzz in US Black women’s communities about a trending “natural” phenomenon. Sales of chemical relaxers (sometimes dubbed “creamy crack” among the US Black community) have dropped 34 percent since 2009, while sales of “natural” hair care products that promise to non-chemically enhance or beautify “natural” curls are up exponentially. Corresponding to the rise in sales of “natural” hair care products are beauty blogs, YouTube instructional videos and supportive social groups—such as “natural hair” meet-ups, which have organically emerged for, and been mostly created by, Black women as a tool to support and nurture women as they take this journey. In this article, I use Black feminist P.H. Collins’s work because her understanding of the relationship between knowledge, consciousness and empowerment provides a framework or point of departure for grasping my own lived experience of going “natural” with regards to modes of oppression and methods of resistance.
