1. Evolution of a laser wake cavity in a MCF plasma

Abstract: Abstract A laser pulse focused to relativistic intensity inside a magnetically confined fusion (MCF) plasma plows away all electrons in its path. The ensuing Coulomb explosion of the ions leaves behind a cavity of microscopic size, with gradients in the electric potential and plasma density orders of magnitude stronger than anything the plasma could generate spontaneously. When posing questions concerning the practical utility of such an exotic perturbation, the life time and structural evolution of the cavity are of interest. Our simulations in a simplified 1D + 2D setting and otherwise realistic parameters suggest that a sub-mm wide seed cavity (meant to resemble the laser wake channel) collapses or disintegrates within 10 ns. The dynamics are sensitive to the relative scales of the cavity, Debye shielding and gyration. We find evidence for the possibility that the collapsing seed cavity spawns solitary micro-cavities. It remains to be seen whether such structures form and survive long enough in a 3D setting to alter the local plasma conditions (e.g., as micro-cavity clusters) in ways that may be utilized for practical purposes such as plasma initiation, diagnostics or control.

Abstract: The current status and the progress of R&D activities for a Fusion DEMO reactor in the QST Rokkasho Fusion Institute is reported. In order to advance the JA DEMO activity, not only Japanese domestic activity but also international collaborations of Broader Approach Activity and ITER related activities are conducted in the QST Rokkasho Fusion Institute. Activities for DEMO design and relevant R&D, design of a fusion neutron source and development of an accelerator, ITER-TBS, tritium handling technology and information technology infrastructures including a supercomputer system and a remote experimentation system are carried out for a Fusion DEMO reactor.

Abstract: We report the results of MHD stability analysis with plasma rotation and ion diamagnetic drift effects in QH-mode plasmas in JT-60U. It was found the plasma rotation evaluated by averaging both bulk ion rotation and impurity ion one is effectively stabilize the MHD modes. Abstract: Hot spots on the divertor tiles at JET result in overestimation of the tile surface temperature which causes unnecessary termination of pulses. However, the appearance of hot spots can also indicate the condition of the divertor tile surfaces. To analyse the behaviour of the hot spots in the outer divertor tiles of JET, a simple image processing algorithm is developed. The algorithm isolates areas of bright pixels in the camera image and compares them to previously identified hot spots. The activity of the hot spots is then linked to values of other signals and parameters in the same time intervals. The operation of the detection algorithm was studied in a limited pulse range with high hot spot activity on the divertor tiles 5, 6 and 7. This allowed us to optimise the values of the controlling parameters. Then, the wider applicability of the method has been demonstrated by the analysis of the hot spot behaviour in a whole experimental campaign.

9. Comparison of MHD stability between positive- and negative- triangularity tokamak plasmas with internal transport barriers

Abstract: Ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) stability of tokamak plasmas is compared between positive and negative triangularity cross sections. The bootstrap current is included that is determined from the density and temperature profiles. This is crucial for a DEMO reactor design. The density and temperature profiles are chosen to have internal transport barriers (ITBs), which are necessary if an H-mode edge cannot be expected. The ideal MHD stability is examined in a wide range of the ITB position and the central temperature. We confirmed that ballooning modes are prone to be unstable when the ITB is located near the plasma edge for negative triangularity. Internal kink modes become dominant instability when the ITB is located inner side of the plasma for both positive and negative triangularities. We have succeeded to stabilize both ballooning and internal kink modes by introducing additional currents to control the safety factor profiles in a favorable manner.

10. Stabilization of kink/peeling modes by coupled rotation and ion diamagnetic drift effects in quiescent H-mode plasmas in DIII-D and JT-60U

Abstract: Magnetohydrodynamic stability at the edge pedestal in several quiescent H-mode (QH-mode) plasmas in DIII-D and JT-60U experiments was analyzed by considering plasma rotation and ion diamagnetic drift effects. It was identified that a kink/peeling mode, which is a prime candidate for a trigger of edge harmonic oscillation in QH-mode, is stabilized by plasma rotation when considering the ion diamagnetic drift simultaneously in both experiments. The stabilizing effect by rotation becomes more effective in case using the rotation profile of the main ion species evaluated by assuming radial force balance. In addition, when inverting the rotation direction, it was found that the kink/peeling mode is more stabilized when considering the rotation of the main ion species, though the mode is less stabilized by the rotation of impurity ion species. The result implies that the kink/peeling mode stability in QH-mode plasmas is sensitive to how the rotation profile is evaluated, but it is shown that a qualitative trend stabilizing the kink/peeling mode by rotation can be reproduced with the poloidal rotation profile of an impurity predicted numerically based on the neoclassical theory.

11. Development of a novel integrated model GOTRESS+ for predictions and assessment of JT-60SA operation scenarios including the pedestal

Abstract: A novel integrated model GOTRESS+ has been developed, which consists of the iterative transport solver GOTRESS as a kernel of the integrated model, the equilibrium and current profile alignment code ACCOME and the neutral beam heating/current-drive code OFMC. GOTRESS is able to robustly find out an exact solution of the stationary-state transport equations even with a stiff turbulent transport model, taking advantage of global optimization techniques such as a genetic algorithm. GOTRESS+ is then suitable for self-consistently assessing the stationary-state plasma performance of JT-60SA as well as ITER and DEMO or validating their feasibility. Recently GOTRESS+ has been extended to incorporate the in-house EPED1 model exploiting the MHD stability code MARG2D and is now able to predict the plasma profiles even with the pedestal over the entire region from the magnetic axis to the plasma boundary in a self-consistent manner. The two JT-60SA operation scenarios including the ITER-like inductive scenario and the high β fully non-inductively current driven scenario have been assessed by GOTRESS+ with the CDBM turbulent transport model.

12. A mass-energy-conserving discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the isotropic multispecies Rosenbluth–Fokker–Planck equation

Abstract: Structure-preserving discretization of the Rosenbluth–Fokker–Planck equation is still an open question especially for unlike-particle collision. In this paper, a mass-energy-conserving isotropic Rosenbluth–Fokker–Planck scheme is introduced. The structure related the energy conservation is skew-symmetry in mathematical sense, and the action–reaction law in physical sense. A thermal relaxation term is obtained by using integration-by-parts on a volume integral in the energy moment equation, so the discontinuous Galerkin method is selected to preserve the skew-symmetry. The discontinuous Galerkin method enables ones to introduce the nonlinear upwind flux without violating the conservation laws. Some experiments show that the conservative scheme maintains the mass-energy-conservation only with round-off errors, and analytic equilibria are reproduced only with truncation errors of its formal accuracy.

13. A study on ohmic plasma initiation for JA DEMO

Abstract: We have investigated ohmic plasma initiation for JA DEMO, a design concept of the tokamak demonstration fusion reactor examined in Japan. A calculation model describing the tokamak plasma initiation phase consisting of the two-dimensional analysis of the coil and eddy currents and the zero-dimensional plasma analysis is developed. It is revealed that the conducting shell does not necessarily hinder plasma initiation, while it provides the stabilizing effect of vertical displacement events. The available loop voltage and prefill gas pressure for initiation in JA DEMO are clarified for developing the initiation scenario. We demonstrate a possible scenario of ohmic plasma initiation, which is consistent with the design specifications of superconducting poloidal field coils.

14. On Collapses in Strong Reversed Shear Plasmas During or Just After Plasma Current Ramp-Up in JT-60U

Abstract: The advanced tokamak (AT) scenario with the strong reversed magnetic shear is an attractive candidate of the steady state tokamak because the strong internal transport barrier leads to the high bootstrap current fraction, resulting in the reduction of the cost of the fusion reactor. In this paper, the causes of the collapses during or just after plasma current ramp-up of the experimental campaign of the AT scenario in 2007 and 2008 are investigated and the initial results are reported. As the observations are consistent with characteristics of the stability on the resistive wall mode (RWM) and the results of MARG2D code, the RWM is suggested as the candidate of the cause of the collapses in the analyzed AT scenario.

15. Toroidal and slab ETG instability dominance in the linear spectrum of JET-ILW pedestals

Abstract: Local linear gyrokinetic simulations show that electron temperature gradient (ETG) instabilities are the fastest growing modes for kyρi ≳ 0.1 in the steep gradient region for a JET pedestal discharge (92174) where the electron temperature gradient is steeper than the ion temperature gradient. Here, ky is the wavenumber in the direction perpendicular to both the magnetic field and the radial direction, and ρi is the ion gyroradius. At kyρi ≳ 1, the fastest growing mode is often a novel type of toroidal ETG instability. This toroidal ETG mode is driven at scales as large as kyρi ∼ (ρi/ρe)LTe/R0 ∼ 1 and at a sufficiently large radial wavenumber that electron finite Larmor radius effects become important; that is, Kxρe ∼ 1, where Kx is the effective radial wavenumber. Here, ρe is the electron gyroradius, R0 is the major radius of the last closed flux surface, and 1/LTe is an inverse length proportional to the logarithmic gradient of the equilibrium electron temperature. The fastest growing toroidal ETG modes are often driven far away from the outboard midplane. In this equilibrium, ion temperature gradient instability is subdominant at all scales and kinetic ballooning modes are shown to be suppressed by E × B shear. ETG modes are very resilient to E × B shear. Heuristic quasilinear arguments suggest that the novel toroidal ETG instability is important for transport.

Abstract: The superconducting tokamak JT-60SA is being built in Naka (Japan) under the Broader Approach Satellite Tokamak Programme jointly by Europe and Japan, and under the Japanese national programme. JT-60SA has an important supporting mission for the development of fusion energy: designed to achieve long pulses (100 s) and break-even equivalent plasmas, challenging high-beta operation beyond the no-wall limit. It will help in both the exploitation of ITER and in the definition of an optimized DEMO design. The device will be equipped with off-axis negative-NBI at 0.5 MeV beam energy, allowing current profile tailoring for advanced tokamak scenarios with fully noninductive current drive. The focus of the work is set on high ?N scenarios, in which kink-like instabilities (e.g., one or more RWMs) are potentially unstable and possibly lead to disruptions. In the framework of a joint European-Japanese collaboration, coordinated effort on MHD stability and control modelling is ongoing for the safe realization and exploitation of high-betaN plasmas. These scenarios offer a great opportunity to test and verify present models of RWM physics. The drift-kinetic damping model in particular will be considered in the present work, with a stability study in Scenario 5.1 -- like plasmas carried out with MARS-F/K. The challenge of active control is also addressed, taking advantage of the set of RWM control coils that JT-60SA will have. A dynamic simulator, based on the CarMa code, has been developed for feedback control modelling. A demonstration of this tool is given in one of the aforementioned plasmas, showing potential applications, results and latest developments.

17. Shaping Effects on Non-ideal Ballooning Mode

Abstract: The dependence of shaping effects on the growth rate of collisionless and resistive ballooning mode (CBM/RBM) is numerically investigated. That of the drift ballooning modes (DCBM/DRBM) is also investigated by taking kinetic effects into account. Resistivity scans of linear growth rates of CBM/RBM and DCBM/DRBM in a circular geometry show that both modes have 3 branches in accordance with decreasing resistivity, fast, re- sistive and collisionless branch. The last two branches are in the edge relevant resistivity regime and are in the scope of this paper. For CBM/RBM, shaping effect on the growth rate becomes weak with increasing resistivity and the growth rate monotonically increases with decrease of the elongation and increase of the triangularity, on the other hand, the opposite tendency appears on the triangularity for DCBM, namely it weakly decreases with increase of the triangularity. This fact indicates that the inverted D-shaped equilibrium can be unstable against DCBM compared with the D-shaped equilibrium.

Resistive wall mode (RWM) stability is found with this model for low plasma rotation and precession drift resonance with thermal ions. The dependence on normalized and flow profile is discussed. The challenge of active control is also addressed, taking advantage of the set of RWM control coils that JT-60SA will install. A dynamic simulator, based on the CarMa code, has been developed for feedback control modeling. A demonstration of this tool is given for one of the aforementioned plasmas. Stabilization of the most unstable RWM is achieved within basic power limits. Potential applications, results and latest development of this tool are discussed.

Abstract: The 2014–2016 JET results are reviewed in the light of their significance for optimising the ITER research plan for the active and non-active operation. More than 60 h of plasma operation with ITER first wall materials successfully took place since its installation in 2011. New multi-machine scaling of the type I-ELM divertor energy flux density to ITER is supported by first principle modelling. ITER relevant disruption experiments and first principle modelling are reported with a set of three disruption mitigation valves mimicking the ITER setup. Insights of the L–H power threshold in Deuterium and Hydrogen are given, stressing the importance of the magnetic configurations and the recent measurements of fine-scale structures in the edge radial electric. Dimensionless scans of the core and pedestal confinement provide new information to elucidate the importance of the first wall material on the fusion performance. H-mode plasmas at ITER triangularity (H = 1 at ßN ~ 1.8 and n/nGW ~ 0.6) have been sustained at 2 MA during 5 s. The ITER neutronics codes have been validated on high performance experiments. Prospects for the coming D–T campaign and 14 MeV neutron calibration strategy are reviewed. Abstract: Helium is widely used as a fuel or minority gas in laboratory fusion experiments, and will be present as ash in DT thermonuclear plasmas. It is therefore essential to have a good understanding of its atomic physics. To this end He II population modelling has been undertaken for the spectroscopic levels arising from shells with principal quantum number n = 1–5. This paper focuses on a collisional excitation model; ionisation and recombination will be considered in a subsequent article. Heavy particle collisional excitation rate coefficients have been generated to supplement the currently-available atomic data for He II, and are presented for proton, deuteron, triton and α-particle projectiles. The widely-used criterion for levels within an n shell being populated in proportion to their statistical weights is reassessed with the most recent atomic data, and found not to apply to the He II levels at tokamak densities (1018–1021 m−3). Consequences of this and other likely sources of errors are quantified, as is the effect of differing electron and ion temperatures. Line intensity ratios, including the so-called 'branching ratios' and the fine-structure β 1, β 2, β 3 and γ ratios, are discussed, the latter with regard to their possible use as diagnostics.

21. Effects of the applied magnetic fields with various toroidal phase differences on the neoclassical toroidal viscosity in JT-60SA

Abstract: The integrated framework consisting of TOPICS, VMEC and FORTEC-3D, has been applied to provide an estimate of the neoclassical toroidal viscosity (NTV) produced by the applied magnetic perturbations (MPs). Six picture-frame error field correction coils in each row in JT-60SA realize the various patterns of the applied magnetic field spectrum. The NTV is investigated for various toroidal phase differences. As long as the same coil current is applied, the n = 3 MPs generate the same NTV, regardless of even or odd parity, or energizing the middle coils or not. The n = 1 MPs give rise to larger NTV than the n = 3 ones. The NTV invoked by the n = 1 resonant MPs is virtually equivalent to that by the n = 1 nonresonant MPs with five-fold coil current.

Abstract: The design of the modification of JT-60U, JT-60SA has been optimized from the viewpoint of plasma performance, and operation regimes have been evaluated with the latest design. Upper and lower divertors with different geometries will be prepared for flexibility of the plasma shape, which will enable both low aspect ratio (A ~ 2.65) and ITER shape (A = 3.1) configurations. The beam lines of negative-ion neutral beam injection will be shifted downwards by ~0.6 m for the off-axis current drive (CD), in order to obtain a weak/reversed shear plasma, as well as having the capability of heating the central region. The feedback control coils along the openings in the stabilizing plate are found effective in suppressing the resistive wall mode and sustaining high βN close to the ideal wall limit. Sustainment of plasma current of 3–3.5 MA for 100 s will be possible in ELMy H-mode plasmas with moderate heating power, βN, and density within an available flux swing. It is also expected that higher βN, high-density ELMy H-mode plasmas will be maintained for 100 s with higher heating power. The expected regime of full CD operation has been extended with upgraded heating and CD power. Full CD operation for 100 s with reactor-relevant high values of normalized beta and bootstrap current fraction (Ip = 2.4 MA, βN = 4.3, fBS = 0.69, , HH98y2 = 1.3) is expected in a highly-shaped low-aspect-ratio configuration (A = 2.65).

23. Excitation of Flow-Stabilized Resistive Wall Mode by Coupling with Stable Eigenmodes in Tokamaks.

Abstract: In a rotating toroidal plasma surrounded by a resistive wall, it is shown that linear MHD instabilities can be excited by couplings between the resistive wall mode (RWM) and stable ideal MHD modes. In particular, it is shown that the RWM can couple not only with stable external kink modes but also with Alfven eigenmodes that are ordinarily in the stable continuum of a toroidal plasma. The RWM growth rate is shown to peak whenever the Doppler shift caused by the plasma rotation cancels the frequency of an ideal MHD mode, so that the mode appears to have zero frequency in the laboratory frame. At these values of the rotation frequency, the RWM can overcome the stabilizing effects of plasma rotation, continuum damping, and ion Landau damping. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

24. Alfvén Acoustic Channel for Ion Energy in High-Beta Tokamak Plasmas.

Abstract: When the plasma beta (ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure) in the core of a tokamak is raised to values of several percent, as required for a thermonuclear fusion reactor, continuous spectra of long-wavelength slow magnetosonic waves enter the frequency band occupied by continuous spectra of shear Alfvén waves. It is found that these two branches can couple strongly, so that Alfvén modes that are resonantly driven by suprathermal ions transfer some of their energy to sound waves. Since sound waves are heavily damped by thermal ion Landau resonances, these results reveal a new energy channel that contributes to the damping of Alfvénic instabilities and the noncollisional heating of bulk ions, with potentially important consequences for confinement and fusion performance. Abstract: A laser pulse focused to relativistic intensity inside a magnetically confined fusion (MCF) plasma plows away all electrons in its path. The ensuing Coulomb explosion of the ions leaves behind a cavity of microscopic size, with gradients in the electric potential and plasma density orders of magnitude stronger than anything the plasma could generate spontaneously. When posing questions concerning the practical utility of such an exotic perturbation, the life time and structural evolution of the cavity are of interest. Our simulations in a simplified 1D + 2D setting and otherwise realistic parameters suggest that a sub-mm wide seed cavity (meant to resemble the laser wake channel) collapses or disintegrates within 10 ns. The dynamics are sensitive to the relative scales of the cavity, Debye shielding and gyration. We find evidence for the possibility that the collapsing seed cavity spawns solitary micro-cavities. It remains to be seen whether such structures form and survive long enough in a 3D setting to alter the local plasma conditions (e.g., as micro-cavity clusters) in ways that may be utilized for practical purposes such as plasma initiation, diagnostics or control. Abstract: Impacts of electron inertia with an electron skin depth (ESD) longer than the realistic value used in early numerical studies on non-ideal ballooning modes (NIBMs) are numerically investigated by a linearized 3-field reduced MHD model. In this paper, 4 different ESDs,are used for an resistivity dependence study of the growth rate of NIBMs, where de s the real ESD and d*e = 10 corresponds to an order of ESD used in a numerical study on collisionless ballooning mode (CBM) reported in [Kleva and Guzdar Phys. Plasmas 6, 116 (1999)]. In the case with the real ESD d*e = de, a transition from resistive ballooning mode (RBM) to CBM occurs in the edge relevant resistivity regime, while the electron inertia effect is overestimated and the growth rate is almost independent of resistivity in the cases with d∗e =√10de and 10de. These results indicate that the real ESD is one of key factors for the edge stability and turbulence analysis.

27. Theory and Computational Method for the Stability Analysis of External MHD Modes in Toroidal Plasmas

Abstract: The theory and analytical model for the stability analysis of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modes based on the two-dimensional Newcomb equation are extended for the analysis of external MHD modes both with low-n and with high-n toroidal mode numbers. In this model, since the appropriate weight function and the boundary conditions at rational surfaces are introduced to solve the eigenvalue problem associated with the Newcomb equation, the spectrum of this eigenvalue problem contains only discrete eigenvalues. This feature enables us to reveal explicitly whether plasma is stable or unstable. In this dissertation, the analytical model is first applied to the development of a new method that analyzes the stability of a low-n external MHD mode in a matrix form, and hence this new method is called the stability matrix method. A numerical code (MARG2D-SM) is developed according to the stability matrix method, and the validity of the code is confirmed by several benchmark tests. The code clarifies the spectral structure of n=1 ideal external kink modes, which are stable or unstable. The spectral gaps induced by the poloidal coupling are also investigated. The stability matrix method reveals the effect of stable ideal internal modes (fixed boundary modes) on the stability of ideal external modes (free boundary modes). With this effect, the mode structure of an ideal external mode changes from a surface mode structure to a global mode structure as a beta value increases, and an external mode destabilizes when an internal mode approaches to their marginal stability; a beta value is a ratio of the plasma pressure to the magnetic pressure. This effect explains how a safety factor profile in the core region of high beta tokamak plasma affects the stability of an ideal external mode. The model based on the Newcomb equation has an advantage that the marginal stability can be identified only with a short computation time. Such an advantage is demonstrated to be powerful in the study on the aspect ratio dependence of the n=1 ideal external MHD mode stability. For high-n external MHD modes, the analytical method based on the Newcomb equation is extended in the vacuum region; the vacuum energy integral is calculated by using the vector potential method. The MARG2D code, which solves numerically the eigenvalue problem associated with the two-dimensional Newcomb equation, is adapted to this new model, and the validity of this extension is confirmed by benchmark tests. This extended MARG2D code is developed as a parallel computing code, and enables the fast stability analysis of high-n modes like a peeling mode, an edge ballooning mode, and a couple of them called a peeling-ballooning mode.

At $k_y \rho_i \gtrsim 1$, the fastest growing mode is often a novel type of toroidal ETG instability. This toroidal ETG mode is driven at scales as large as $k_y \rho_i \sim (\rho_i/\rho_e) L_{Te} / R_0 \sim 1$ and at a sufficiently large radial wavenumber that electron finite Larmor radius effects become important; that is, $K_x \rho_e \sim 1$, where $K_x$ is the effective radial wavenumber. Here, $\rho_e$ is the electron gyroradius, $R_0$ is the major radius of the last closed flux surface, and $1/L_{Te}$ is an inverse length proportional to the logarithmic gradient of the equilibrium electron temperature. The fastest growing toroidal ETG modes are often driven far away from the outboard midplane. In this equilibrium, ion temperature gradient instability is subdominant at all scales and kinetic ballooning modes are shown to be suppressed by $\mathbf{ E} \times \mathbf{ B} $ shear. Abstract: A model is proposed for the edge harmonic oscillation, in which the stationary coherent mode is sustained in the almost linear phase as has been observed in JT-60U. We study the coupled dynamics of the peeling mode amplitude and edge pressure gradient. The limit cycle oscillation is predicted. The peeling mode (which is almost in the linear phase) is in a dynamical stationary state with amplitude modulation. In this model, the time scales for the change of parameters that specify magnetic structures (such as magnetic shear and edge plasma current) are assumed to be much slower, so that are decoupled from the limit cycle dynamics. The condition that the limit cycle state appears is shown. The oscillation frequency of the modulation is given by the hybrid mean of the typical growth rate of the peeling mode and the additional loss rate of pressure gradient by the peeling mode. 31. 2014 Nuclear Fusion Prize Acceptance Speech.

Abstract: It is a great honor to receive the 2014 Nuclear Fusion Prize, here at the 25th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference. On behalf of everyone involved in this work, I would like to thank the IAEA, the Nuclear Fusion journal team, the IOP, and specifically Mitsuru Kikuchi, for their support of this important award. I would also like to acknowledge the many important contributions made by the other ten papers nominated for this prize. Our paper investigates the physics of the H-mode pedestal in tokamaks, specifically the development of a predictive understanding of the pedestal structure based on electromagnetic instabilities which constrain it, and the testing of the resulting theoretical model (EPED) against detailed observations on multiple devices. In addition to making pedestal predictions for existing devices, the paper also presents predictions for ITER, including methods for optimizing its pedestal height and fusion performance. What made this work possible, and indeed a pleasure to be involved with, was an extensive set of collaborations, including theory-experiment, multi-institutional, and international collaborations. Many of these collaborations have gone on for over a decade, and have been fostered in part by the ITPA Pedestal Group. The eight authors of this paper, from five institutions, all made important contributions. Rich Groebner, Tom Osborne and Tony Leonard carried out dedicated experiments and data analysis on the DIII-D tokamak, testing the EPED model over a very wide range of parameters. Jerry Hughes led dedicated experiments on Alcator C-Mod which tested the model at high magnetic field and pedestal pressure. Marc Beurskens carried out experiments and data analysis on the JET tokamak, testing the model at large scale. Xueqiao Xu conducted two-fluid studies of diamagnetic stabilization, which enabled a more accurate treatment of this important effect. Finally, Howard Wilson and I have been working together for many years to develop analytic formalism and numerical techniques which enable efficient quantitative study of peeling-ballooning modes. More broadly, I would like to thank the full DIII-D, C-Mod and JET teams, the LLNL and General Atomics Theory groups, and the York Plasma Institute. In addition, I would like to thank the US DOE Office of Fusion Energy Sciences, EURATOM, and the UK EPSRC for supporting this research. 32. TLR Activation and Allergic Disease: Early Life Microbiome and Treatment.

Abstract: Purpose of Review: Allergy and asthma are growing problems in the developed world. The accelerated increase of these diseases may be related to microbiome modification that leads to aberrant activation of Toll-like receptors (TLRs). Current research supports the concept that changes in microbial communities in early life impact TLR activation, resulting in an altered risk for the development of asthma and allergies.Recent Findings: Prenatal and early childhood events that generate microbiome modification are closely related with TLR activation. Early childhood exposure to a rich array of TLR agonists, particularly lipopolysaccharide, strongly predicts protection against allergic disease later in life even when other lifestyle factors are accounted for. Genetic deletion of TLR signaling components in mice results in reduced function of tolerogenic cell populations in the gut. In contrast, weak TLR signaling can promote allergic sensitization later in life.Summary: This review summarizes the role of TLR signaling in microbiome-mediated protection against allergy. 33. Simulations tackle abrupt massive migrations of energetic beam ions in a tokamak plasma.

Abstract: In the late 1990s, fusion scientists at the Japanese tokamak JT-60U discovered abrupt large-amplitude events during beam-driven deuterium plasma experiments. A large spike in the magnetic fluctuation signal followed by a drop in the neutron emission rate indicates that energetic ions abruptly migrate out of the plasma core during an intense burst of Alfvén waves that lasts only 0.3 ms. With continued beam injection, the energetic ion population recovers until the next event occurs 40-60 ms later. Here we present results from simulations that successfully reproduce multiple migration cycles and report numerical and experimental evidence for the multi-mode nature of these intermittent phenomena. Moreover, we elucidate the role of collisional slow-down and show that the large-amplitude Alfvénic fluctuations can drive magnetic reconnection and induce macroscopic magnetic islands. In this way, our simulations allow us to gradually unravel the underlying physical processes and develop predictive capabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
