Rhyzopertha dominica causes significant economic losses in stored cereals. Insects' digestive tract microbiome is crucial for their development, metabolism, resistance, and digestion. This work aimed to test whether the different chemical properties of different wheat and barley grain cultivars cause disturbances in insect foraging and rearrangements of the structure of the R. dominica microbiome. The results indicated that grain cultivars significantly influence the microbiome, metabolism, and insect foraging. Most observed traits and microbiome structures were not correlated at the species level, as confirmed by ANOSIM (p = 0.441). However, the PLS-PM analysis revealed significant patterns within barley cultivars. The study found associations between C18:2 fatty acids, entomopathogenic bacteria, an impaired nitrogen cycle, lysine production of bacterial origin, and insect feeding. The antioxidant effects also showed trends towards impacting the microbiome and insect development. The findings suggest that manipulating grain chemical properties (increasing C18:2 and antioxidant levels) can influence the R. dominica microbiome, disrupting their foraging behaviours and adaptation to storage environments. The increasing food crisis in times of ecological threats has challenged conventional agriculture to transform into a more efficient and sustainable agri-food system. The global priority of these activities has become, among others, the responsible and effective use of already produced food. This study aimed to assess the impact of the natural resistance of cereal grains to consumption by storage pests. The study presented here analyzed the impact of selected chemical factors from the grain of six species of cereals (wheat, triticale, rye, barley, oat, corn) on the development of one of the most dangerous storage pests—the lesser grain borer Rhyzopertha dominica F. The increased development of this beetle on the tested grain was determined based on the number of progeny, the mass of dust produced, and the loss of grain mass. Moreover, the correlations between the above-mentioned development parameters of the pest and the content in the grain of dry matter, crude ash, total protein, crude fat, starch, and water-soluble carbohydrates (WSCs) were examined. The results showed that the tested pest developed most intensively on barley and triticale grains and was least abundant on oat and corn grains. Chemical analysis of the selected grain showed that the low number of the R. dominica progeny population was correlated with a higher crude fat content and a lower total protein content in the cereal grain, and therefore, these chemical properties could affect the development of the pest. Knowledge of these relationships can be used in cereal breeding programs and when recommending cereals for more extended storage. This directly translates into improved local and global nutritional and food security. Moreover, it may also contribute to the reduction of pesticide use at the storage stage, which is one of the basic requirements for agricultural production in a sustainable agriculture system. Due to global warming, the rice weevil is an increasing threat. Various species of weevils coexist with endosymbiotic Sodalis pierantonius. This study aimed to check whether different chemical properties of different cultivars of common wheat and barley grain cause disturbances in insect feeding and rearrangements of the rice weevil microbiome. It has been observed that foraging increases in the case of cultivars with low protein content, high steric acid content, and low antioxidant activity. Cultivars with higher antioxidant activity, a tendency was observed to increase the number of adult insects and the intensity of feeding. However, the correlation of number of offspring generations and antioxidants was different depending on species of cereals (R2=0.9 for barley, R2<0.1 for wheat). Changes of dominance classes of selected Enterobacteriaceae partially shifted the microbiomes of insects feeding on different barley varieties. In contrast, in some wheat cultivars, displacement of the dominant genus Sodalis by genera Staphylococcus or Mammaliicoccus was observed, severely reducing the rice weevil's foraging ability. Nevertheless, Sodalis sp. almost always dominated (from 16.7 to 90.07% for wheat and from 63.4 to 90.9% for barley), and no correlation was observed between species and variety factors of cereals and their abundance. Owing to its wealth of nutritional values and low cultivation requirements, millet can become a key crop in global food systems. Thus, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) declared that 2023 is the International Year of Millet. The introduction of this cereal and its products into universal food circulation calls for a multidimensional approach, which would also consider threats posed by pests during the storage of cereal kernels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the development of the confused flour beetle (Tribolium confusum Duv.) on common millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) and products obtained from this cereal, and to analyze the factors which influence its development (chemical composition of kernels, degree of their fragmentation). The study was conducted under laboratory conditions in an environmental test chamber (temperature 30 °C, humidity 70%, light—complete darkness). Millet grains of the Jagna cultivar and its products were weighed at 20 g, placed in vinidur dishes, and 10 beetles were then placed on the prepared material. The experiment demonstrated that the millet grain and food products obtained from this grain (millet flour, flakes, groats) could be a suitable habitat for the development of the confused flour beetle. The key regulator for the development of this pest insect is the degree of fragmentation of the infested material. The millet grain and millet products (except millet flour) are characterized by less numerous developments of beetle progeny than wheat products, which could be another advantage of millet in an integrated international system of grain storage. Chemical analysis also showed a significant correlation between the abundance of offspring generation and the content of crude fat (especially linoleic acid—C 18:2). Assemblages of epigeic ground beetles living in Norway spruce forests in north-eastern Poland in three age ranges: young: 20-30 years (A); middle-aged: 40-50 years (B); old: 70-80 years (C) were investigated. In each age category, 4 plots with 5 Barber traps were set up. Ground beetle assemblages were compared in terms of their abundance, species richness, and the Shannon H' index value. Quantitative ecological description of the carabids captured in the analysed age-classes of Norway spruce forests was performed, and the values of the mean individual biomass (MIB) were calculated. To determine the correlation between mean individual biomass and abundance of various ecological groups of carabid beetles, the Spearman rank correlation coefficient was calculated. The assemblages of ground beetles living in the Norway spruce forests in north-eastern Poland were characterised by quite large species richness (44 species in total). There were significant differences in species richness among the different ages of Norway spruce forests. The oldest Norway spruce stands (70-80 years old) had a smaller number of species and specimens of ground beetles as well as the highest MIB values in comparison with the younger spruce forests A and B. The results revealed that high MIB values were positively correlated with the presence of large ground beetle species with higher moisture requirements. Lower values of the MIB index were due to the presence of smaller open habitat macropterous species, with the spring type of breeding and associated with open areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Maintaining biodiversity is one of the factors determining the proper functioning of ecosystems, especially those with high human impact. Ground beetles, as bioindicators, are particularly valuable in understanding ecosystem responses and sustainability in forest and landscape management. Focusing on the regeneration of pine forests, this study aimed to describe ground beetle assemblages on Scots pine natural and artificial regeneration in northeastern Poland. This study was conducted between 2016 and 2018. Pitfall traps were set up for catching epigeic carabids on previously prepared research plots designated for natural and artificial pine regeneration. The research areas included three variants: N—natural pine regeneration, plots without soil preparation; NP—natural pine regeneration with traditional soil preparation by ploughing; and A—artificial pine regeneration with ploughing. Four plots as replicants were selected in each experimental variant, with six pitfall traps in the transects running through the centre of each study plot. In each year of the study, 11 samples were collected from each plot; overall, 33 samples per plot were collected during the three years. As a result of this study, 26,654 ground beetle individuals belonging to 89 species were caught during the three-year observation. Natural regeneration without soil preparation (N) was the most favourable in terms of the occurrence of stabilised assemblages of ground beetles. However, the remaining methods of pine regeneration, on a multi-annual scale (2016–2018), contributed to the increase in the number of ground beetles but also provided high variability in assemblage composition, diversity indices, and life-history traits. Thus, in the early stage of pine regeneration, each of the examined variants of pine regeneration can be used without fear of causing damage to carabid populations. Wheat, the main source of protein in the human diet, is a staple food in many countries. The yields and technological quality of wheat grain depend on both the yielding potential of wheat and the properties of wheat grain that allow its safe storage. To a large extent, losses during storage are caused by storage pests. Grains of 46 wheat cultivars were used in the study (samples weighing 20 g of each variety in 10 replications), on which the development of the grain weevil Sitophilus granarius (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) was observed (20 insects aged 3–4 days; sex ratio of 1:1). The laboratory study was carried out at constant temperature (27 OC) and humidity (75% relative humidity). The laboratory study demonstrated that the physicochemical parameters of grain (hardness, glassiness, flouriness, content of protein, sugars, starch, and crude fat), which are cultivar-dependent, can act as regulators of the development of the grain weevil. The main aim of the study was to develop recommendations regarding the breeding of wheat cultivars resistant to the foraging of S. granarius and which could therefore produce grain for longer storage, and to distinguish those that are more sensitive to the grain weevil and whose grain should therefore be supplied to the market more quickly. Knowledge of the resistance or susceptibility of individual cereal varieties to the feeding of storage pests may be useful in integrated grain storage management. Among the 46 wheat cultivars studied, five cultivars with the highest and five cultivars with the lowest susceptibility to foraging by S. granarius were identified. The highest inherent tolerance to the grain weevil was displayed by the following cultivars: KWS Livius, Bogatka, Speedway, Platin, and Julius; in contrast, the cultivars Askalon, Bamberka, Ostroga, Forum, and Muszelka proved to be the most sensitive. The chemical and physical analysis of the selected cultivars revealed a significant, positive correlation between the intensity of the development of the grain weevil, the content of starch and crude fat in the grain, and grain hardness and flouriness. Sustaining biodiversity as well as taking advantage of the natural environment’s resistance are the key elements which should be considered when designing integrated plans for the protection of hazelnut groves. An effort has been made in this study to analyse the impact of different soil cultivation methods in hazelnut groves, on the species composition and number of individuals in carabid assemblages (Coleoptera: Carabidae). Another aim was to determine which method of inter-row soil management had the least negative effect on assemblages of these beetles. Because of the type of habitat, the xerothermic species characteristic for southeastern Europe, i.e. Calathus ambiguus, Poecilus lepidus, Harpalus calceatus, and H. griseus, were the most numerous. The qualitative and quantitative analysis of the captured individuals implied that the optimal soil tillage system in young hazelnut groves is when soil is kept fallow with machines or chemicals, or when soil is covered with manure. Featured Application: The sterilization of the internal microbiome of insects only causes the death of S. oryzae, and has no impact on R. dominica. The removal of the symbiotic microbiota causes a severe shift in the biochemical potential of the insect. Confirmation that certain insects enter into symbiotic interactions with the microbiota suggests the need for extensive testing of the pest's susceptibility to the loss of symbiotic microbiota, which could open a new path in warehouse pest control strategies. Rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae) and the lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica) are very important warehouse pests and, therefore, their control is crucial. At a key moment in the life of adult Sitophilus spp., the obligatory symbiotic nature of the Sodalis pierantonius bacterium opens up a new perspective for natural antibiotics and bactericides. In this study, we used nanopore sequencing for 16S rRNA barcoding to evaluate the internal bacteriome of S. oryzae and R. dominica and sterilized the insects' internal microbiome with gentamicin. The treatment of the interior of S. oryzae with gentamicin (30 mg·g−1) hampered insect functioning (supposed lack of DOPA (4-dihydroxyphenylalanine) synthesis, stabilizing the exoskeleton by Sodalis pierantonius symbiont) and elicited a lethal effect in the first stages of this pest's adult life. In addition, we identified biochemical biomarkers (enzymatic activity and substrate utilization) active in living individuals, but inactive in dead individuals (e.g., C8 esterase/lipase and α-chymotrypsin). This study was carried out in an area covered by the "Increasing retention capacity and prevention of floods and droughts in forest ecosystems in lowland areas" land drainage development project. The aim was to evaluate the impact of transformations in a habitat following the project's implementation on the structure of assemblages of epigeic ground beetles, in the context of the overall trend of decreasing biodiversity. The entomological observations were commenced before launching the planned hydro-technical development at the study area and were repeated 11 years later. During the two years of observations (2008 and 2019), 3311 specimens of ground beetles, representing 89 species, were captured. Water regulation affected the composition of ground beetle assemblages. After the small water retention program had been completed, a quantitative and qualitative decrease in ground beetles was observed. The groundwork for the development caused some disturbances in the habitat, leading to, amongst other things, higher soil moisture, which was conducive to the establishment of ground beetle assemblages other than those observed before the water retention project. After the hydro-technical objects had been constructed, the share of large and small zoophages with higher moisture preferences (hygrophilous species) increased, while the contribution of xerophilous hemizoophages decreased. Plant stress caused by aphid foraging can cause a number of disturbances in its vital functions. The degree of disturbance depends on the duration of the stress factor and its intensity. The aim of this study has been to evaluate the impact of aphids (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris, Rhopalosiphum padi L., Myzus persicae Sulzer) foraging on plants and the intensity of photosynthesis and transpiration in several crops (Pisum sativum L., Triticum aestivum L., Brassica napus L.). The laboratory experiment conducted for this purpose revealed that aphids feeding on plants affect the course of photosynthesis and transpiration in crops. Statistically significant correlations were determined between the efficiency of these processes and the number of aphids as well as the duration of their foraging. The average values of the intensity of photosynthesis and transpiration in the test crops were found to increase with the increasing number of aphids in a short feeding period (day 5). A longer foraging time (10, 15 days) coincided with a decrease in the intensity of photosynthesis and transpiration. A detailed analysis of the three species of crops demonstrated that the effect of the biotic stressors on the course of the analysed processes could vary, depending on the host plant. The influence of chemical plant protection on carabid beetle assemblages was studied in an experiment conducted on fields of sugar beet at the IOR-PIB Experimental Station in Winna Góra, Poland. The experiment was composed of a block of control fields (no chemical plant protection treatments) and second block, where plant protection was carried out in compliance with the applicable plant protection program. Ground beetles were caught from May to August/September in four years, using modified Barber traps. As a result of the study, 11 881 specimens belonging to 52 species of Carabidae were collected. The most numerous species were: Harpalus rufipes, Pterostichus melanarius, Calathus ambiguus and Bembidion properans. Overall, our results demonstrate that the application of chemical plant protection treatments decreased the abundance of carabid beetles in sugar beet fields, but had no effect on species richness. The use of pesticides induced changes in some life traits of Carabidae fauna. After a pesticide application, the abundance of macropterous hemizoophages and medium carnivores with the autumn type of breeding decreased, whereas the abundance of small carnivores increased. This study, concerning the epigeic fauna of carabid beetles (Coleoptera; Carabidae), was conducted in the north-east of Poland, in an area which is part of the Dąbrówka Forest Subdistrict and has been included in the "Small water retention program for the Province of Warmia and Mazury in 2006-2015". The purpose of the study was to assess the impact of the water retention implemented within the framework of the above program on assemblages of ground beetles. These insects are highly sensitive to any anthropogenically induced transformations. This analysis was based on the interactions among the analyzed insects caused by changes occurring in their habitat. During the 3-year study, 5,807 specimens representing 84 species were captured. The water storage had a significant influence on the structure of the Carabidae assemblages. Before the earthworks were constructed for the project, the beetle assemblages had comprised a large group of xerophilous species, whereas after the small retention reservoirs had been created, an increase in the contribution of hygrophilous species was noticed. The results indicate that the retention works cause alterations in the water and environmental conditions of the habitats, and thereby effect changes in the composition of Carabidae assemblages. Moreover, modification in water relations within a habitat causes long-term changes in the structural and functional diversity of the beetles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of two storage pests, grain weevil (Sitophilus granarius L.) and lesser grain borer (Rhyzopertha dominica F.), was studied on achenes of buckwheat representing two species: common buckwheat ('Red Corolla', 'Karmen' and 'La Harpe') and tartary buckwheat (Olsztyn, Lublin and Chinese accessions). The analysis included most important physical characteristics (thousand seed weight, husk content and thickness), and basic chemical composition of buckwheat seeds and husks (crude ash, crude fibre, total protein and total flavonoids). Based on the assessment of the development parameters of R. dominica and S. granarius, an attempt was made to determine which physicochemical characteristics of buckwheat achenes affected the development of these beetles. The results suggest that buckwheat achenes are a habitat in which both species of beetles can develop albeit at different dynamics. R. dominica found suitable conditions for the development on tartary buckwheat achenes, whereas achenes of common buckwheat proved to be a less favourable habitat. With respect to S. granarius, only single individuals completed their development on achenes of both buckwheat species, which indicates that this food source is a rather unattractive habitat for the lesser grain borer. The physical factor which deterred S. granarius from settling on buckwheat is most probably the thick husk of achenes. However, this feature is not a barrier to the lesser grain borer, and the properties which can contribute to the toughness of food (i.e. the per cent share of husk in the whole achene, husk thickness and content of crude fibre) can be decisive factors in beetles accepting or not a given buckwheat accession. Other traits which significantly affected the development of this pest included higher concentrations of total protein and total flavonoids in seeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Spiders (Araneae) create abundant and diverse assemblages in many agroecosystems, where they play a crucial role as the main group of predators and pest controllers. However, seasonal disturbance in the agricultural environment (e.g., harvesting or ploughing) affects spider assemblages. The main aim of this research was to compare assemblages of Araneae colonising cereal fields cultivated under two different systems of soil tillage: conventional with ploughing and non-inversion tillage. The research covered plantations of triticale, wheat, and barley, situated in northeastern Poland. Ground-dwelling spiders were captured into modified pitfall traps filled up to 1/3 height with an ethylene glycol solution. In total, 6744 spiders representing 67 species classified in 13 families were caught. The traps were emptied every two weeks from the end of April until the end of July. A total of 2410 specimens representing 55 species were captured in the fields with simplified cultivation, while the remaining 4334 specimens representing 49 species were trapped in conventional fields where ploughing was performed. The Shannon diversity (H') and evenness (J') indices reached higher values in the fields without ploughing. According to IndVal Erigone, dentipalpis and Bathyphantes gracilis were signifi-cantly characteristic (p < 0.05) for non-inversion soil tillage, whereas six species, Oedothorax apicatus, Pardosa prativaga, Pardosa paludicola, Pachygnatha clerki, Dicimbium nigrum brevisetosum, and Clubiona reclusa, were typical of soil tillage with ploughing. The research showed that simplification of soil tillage in cereal fields improves the biodiversity of arachnofauna in agricultural ecosystems. Simple Summary: The grain weevil (Sitophilus granarius L.) is a common storage pest species, whose foraging on stored cereal grain causes major losses worldwide every year. Traditional ways to control this species (non-chemical) are expensive or do not guarantee effective control against this pest insect. The application of chemical methods, on the other hand, is contradictory to consumers' expectations regarding food safety, and cause a negative impact on the natural environment. An important step in the development of a safe and effective strategy for limiting the losses caused by the grain weevil is to search for mechanisms influencing the natural resistance of cereal grain and then to use this knowledge in the breeding of new cultivars. This experiment entailed assessing the content of fatty acids in grains of selected wheat cultivars. The content of these compounds and their composition in the wheat cultivars varied. In addition, the life cycle of S. granarius on the tested wheat grain was assessed. The results of the experiment suggested that the intensity of the development of S. granarius is significantly correlated with a higher content of saturated fatty acids and unsaturated ones in kernels. The substances that might stimulate the development of the grain weevil or reduce the number of offspring of this beetle were identified. Sitophilus granarius (L.) is considered to be one of the major pests causing damage to cereal grain stored in silos and granaries. Using traditional methods (synthetic insecticides, mechanical, or physical methods) to control this pest is either ineffective or dangerous to people and nature. It is, therefore, necessary to develop new cultivars of cereals that will be distinguished by a high natural tolerance of the foraging by S. granarius. The aim of this study is expressed in the set research hypothesis, stating that the number of offspring of the grain weevil on stored wheat kernels can depend on the content of fatty acids in the kernels. Thus, the qualitative and quantitative composition of fatty acids was determined in kernels of 10 winter wheat cultivars, and the abundance of the beetle's offspring generation of S. granarius that developed on the wheat grain, as well as the mass of produced dust and loss in the mass of wheat grain were determined. By applying statistical analyses (GLM, ANOVA, Pearson's linear correlation coefficient, and analysis of redundancy), the presence and character of the dependence between the determined content of fatty acids in wheat grain and the factors describing the development of S. granarius were established. The research results indicate that fatty acids from the groups C 18:1 and C 20:1 probably play an important role as substances stimulating the increase in the number of the tested pest progeny. In contrast, fatty acids C 15:0, C 16:1, and C 18:3, which were determined in large amounts in the grain of wheat cultivars Speedway, KWS Livius, and Julius, can reduce the number of offspring of pest insect. Soil cultivation is among the principal factors that determine the structure and properties of soil and also affects the species composition and abundance of soil dwelling arthropods. Carabid beetles are a particularly valuable group of arthropods, the species of which are strongly associated with particular soil environments. This paper discusses the effect of soil tillage on carabid beetle assemblages. The study was carried out near Olsztyn, in northeastern Poland. Six wheat fields, each cultivated using either, conventional or non-inversion, soil tillage, were chosen. Carabid beetles were caught in Barber's traps from early April to the end of October 2011. In total, 7,486 specimens belonging to 55 species of the family Carabidae were captured. The most numerous were Poecilus cupreus, Pterostichus melanarius, Harpalus rufipes, Anchomenus dorsalis and Carabus granulatus. Differences in the abundance of ground beetles and some life history traits were associated with the two soil tillage systems. In particular, ploughing reduced carabid abundance and resulted in the increased activity of medium-sized zoophages and spring breeders. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
