Recent advancements in the discovery of natural products have made significant progress in rapidly identifying known compounds from complex extracts using advanced spectroscopic technologies. Among these methods, one powerful approach called MS/MS molecular networking (MN) organizes chemical similarity based on MS/MS fragmentation data, serving as a valuable complement to traditional dereplication strategies. In our ongoing research focused on lead discovery from a sustainable medicinal source, an aquaculture soft coral Sarcophyton trocheliophorum, the MN profiling approach revealed the chemical diversity of biscembranoid analogs. By analyzing the MN pattern, biscembranoid derivatives with unique MS/MS fragments were prioritized for further investigation. Two novel biscembranoids, sarcotroxide A (1) and B (2), were successfully obtained through targeted isolation. These novel biscembranes contained an unprecedented 3-hydroperoxy-3-methylcyclohex-1-ene moiety compared with all biscembranoid analogs. The chemical structures of the two new biscembranoids were confirmed through spectroscopic analyses and in silico calculations. Their anti-inflammatory properties were assessed against the generation of superoxide anion (O2•−) and elastase release in activated human neutrophils. Sarcotroxides A (1) and B (2) exhibited anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting O2•− accumulation (with 43.67% and 61.62% inhibition) and elastase release (with 38.21% and 61.62% inhibition) at 10 µM. These findings validated the potential of these biscembranoids from the cultured S. trocheliophorum as promising candidates for the future development of anti-inflammatory agents specifically designed to target neutrophils.

Inflammation is a critical defense mechanism that is utilized by the body to protect itself against pathogens and other noxious invaders. However, if the inflammatory response becomes exaggerated or uncontrollable, its original protective role is not only demolished but it also becomes detrimental to the affected tissues or even to the entire body. Thus, regulating the inflammatory process is crucial to ensure that it is resolved promptly to prevent any subsequent damage. The role of neutrophils in inflammation has been highlighted in recent decades by a plethora of studies focusing on neutrophilic inflammatory diseases as well as the mechanisms to regulate the activity of neutrophils during the overwhelmed inflammatory process. As natural products have demonstrated promising effects in a wide range of pharmacological activities, they have been investigated for the discovery of new anti-inflammatory therapeutics to overcome the drawbacks of current synthetic agents. Octocorals have attracted scientists as a plentiful source of novel and intriguing marine scaffolds that exhibit many pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory effects. In this review, we aim to provide a summary of the neutrophilic anti-inflammatory properties of these marine organisms that were demonstrated in 46 studies from 1995 to the present (April 2023). We hope the present work offers a comprehensive overview of the anti-inflammatory potential of octocorals and encourages researchers to identify promising leads among numerous compounds isolated from octocorals over the past few decades to be further developed into anti-inflammatory therapeutic agents.

In recent decades, aquaculture techniques for soft corals have made remarkable progress in terms of conditions and productivity. Researchers have been able to obtain larger quantities of soft corals, thus larger quantities of biologically active metabolites, allowing them to study their biological activity in many pharmacological assays and even produce sufficient quantities for clinical trials. In this review, we summarize 201 secondary metabolites that have been identified from cultured soft corals in the era from 2002 to September 2022. Various types of diterpenes (eunicellins, cembranes, spatanes, norcembranes, briaranes, and aquarianes), as well as biscembranes, sterols, and quinones were discovered and subjected to bioactivity investigations in 53 different studies. We also introduce a more in-depth discussion of the potential biological effects (anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial) and the mechanisms of action of the identified secondary metabolites. We hope this review will shed light on the untapped potential applications of aquaculture to produce valuable secondary metabolites to tackle current and emerging health conditions.

The most comprehensively studied speech act in interlanguage pragmatics to date has been requests. However, the body of research on requests by L2 learners has mainly been done on English or European languages, such as Spanish, French or Hebrew as a second language. There have been very few developmental studies published on requests in Asian languages. For a relatively less taught and studied language like Vietnamese, the literature on L2 learners’ requests, especially pertaining to Vietnamese pragmatics, is close to non-existent. This study was implemented to gather a better understanding of interlanguage pragmatics of L2 learners of Vietnamese. Elicited data from role-plays of requests were analysed based on Al-Gahtani and Roever’s 2012 discursive approach which focuses on the sequential organization of interactions. Findings indicate that compared to higher-level learners, lower-level learners used fewer pre-expansions, and the first pair-parts occurred earlier in the sequence. The interlocutor also accommodated to learners’ proficiency level when introducing complications, which resulted in fewer elaborated request sequences from learners with lower proficiency. The findings offer implications for teaching Vietnamese as a foreign language as well as methodological implications for gathering data and analyzing the sequential organization of speech acts in South-East Asian languages, such as Vietnamese.

We investigated the influence of convenient diets on big-eyed bug Geocoris ochropterus. Development and reproduction of G. ochropterus fed on convenient diets of ant pupae Oecophylla smaragdina and silkworm pupae Bombyx mori were examined using aphids Aphis gossypii as the control diet. Results showed that Geocoris ochropterus nymphs completed development to adults on all diets. Total average development period was 35.1 days fed on ant pupae, 35.9 days fed on silkworm pupae, and 36.0 days fed on aphids. Head width, body length, forewing length, and fresh body weight of adults were not affected by diets, except for females reared on ant pupae that were significantly heavier than those fed on aphids. There was no significant difference in offspring sex ratio. Total number of eggs deposited per female fed on ant pupae was significantly larger than when fed on aphids, while eggs laid by females fed on silkworm pupae were significantly longer than eggs laid by females fed on aphids. Results suggest that ant pupae and silkworm pupae could be effectively used for mass rearing of G. ochropterus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Vietnam, as more and more organizations are moving toward globalization, green supplier selection (GSS) has emerged as a strategic approach in supply chain management that requires supplier practices in lessening the environmental risks to society. Based on both conventional and environmental criteria, this paper aims to evaluate a set of suppliers by establishing a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM)-based framework using an integrated fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) with the VIseKriterijumska Optimizacija I Kompromisno Resenje (VIKOR) method. Initially, five GSS criteria of the environmental aspect (wastewater treatment, solid waste generation, energy consumption, air pollution, corporate social responsibility) and conventional criteria (quality, cost, delivery, and technology) are identified from the literature and consulting field experts to employ the MCDM approach. The trustworthiness of the proposed integrated framework is presented by discussing a case study in the coffee bean supply chain in Vietnam. The FAHP is used to generate criteria weights in which fuzzy set theory is applied to translate the linguistic evaluation statements of experts, and VIKOR is used to rank the alternatives against the selected criteria. From FAHP findings, the most important criteria are quantity discount, solid waste generation, order fulfillment rate, logistics cost, and purchasing cost. A consistency test is performed to ensure the uniformity of the expert’s input. The best suppliers are determined through the final ranking of the VIKOR model for the case study. The work presented provides insight to decision-makers of supplier selection that helps determine significant GSS criteria and aids in the minimization of environmental risks to society arising from the supply chain on corporate sustainability standards.
