Abstract

BackgroundTuberculosis has caused significant public health and economic burdens in Vietnam over the years. The Vietnam National Tuberculosis Program is facing considerable challenges in its goal to eliminate tuberculosis by 2030, with the COVID-19 pandemic having negatively impacted routine tuberculosis services at all administrative levels. While the turnaround time of tuberculosis infection may delay disease detection, high transportation frequency could potentially mislead epidemiological studies. This study was conducted to develop an online geospatial platform to support healthcare workers in performing data visualization and promoting the active case surveillance in community as well as predicting the TB incidence in space and time.MethodThis geospatial platform was developed using tuberculosis notification data managed by The Vietnam National Tuberculosis Program. The platform allows case distribution to be visualized by administrative level and time. Users can retrieve epidemiological measurements from the platform, which are calculated and visualized both temporally and spatially. The prediction model was developed to predict the TB incidence in space and time.ResultsAn online geospatial platform was developed, which presented the prediction model providing estimates of case detection. There were 400,370 TB cases with bacterial evidence to be included in the study. We estimated that the prevalence of TB in Vietnam was at 414.67 cases per 100.000 population. Ha Noi, Da Nang, and Ho Chi Minh City were predicted as three likely epidemiological hotspots in the near future.ConclusionOur findings indicate that increased efforts should be undertaken to control tuberculosis transmission in these hotspots.

Abstract

Since its emergence in China, the COVID-19 pandemic has spread rapidly around the world. Faced with this unknown disease, public health authorities were forced to experiment, in a short period of time, with various combinations of interventions at different scales. However, as the pandemic progresses, there is an urgent need for tools and methodologies to quickly analyze the effectiveness of responses against COVID-19 in different communities and contexts. In this perspective, computer modeling appears to be an invaluable lever as it allows for the in silico exploration of a range of intervention strategies prior to the potential field implementation phase. More specifically, we argue that, in order to take into account important dimensions of policy actions, such as the heterogeneity of the individual response or the spatial aspect of containment strategies, the branch of computer modeling known as agent-based modeling is of immense interest. We present in this paper an agent-based modeling framework called COVID-19 Modeling Kit (COMOKIT), designed to be generic, scalable and thus portable in a variety of social and geographical contexts. COMOKIT combines models of person-to-person and environmental transmission, a model of individual epidemiological status evolution, an agenda-based 1-h time step model of human mobility, and an intervention model. It is designed to be modular and flexible enough to allow modelers and users to represent different strategies and study their impacts in multiple social, epidemiological or economic scenarios. Several large-scale experiments are analyzed in this paper and allow us to show the potentialities of COMOKIT in terms of analysis and comparison of the impacts of public health policies in a realistic case study.

Abstract

Modeling in ecology or epidemiology generally opposes two classes of models, Equation Based Models and Agent Based Models. Mathematical models allow predicting the long-term dynamics of the studied systems. However, the variability between individuals is difficult to represent, what makes these more suitable models for large and homogeneous populations. Multi-agent models allow representing the attributes and behavior of each individual and therefore provide a greater level of detail. In return, these systems are more difficult to analyze.These approaches have often been compared, but rarely used simultaneously. We propose a hybrid approach to couple equations models and agent-based models, as well as its implementation on the modeling platform Gama [8]. We focus on the representation of a classical theoretical epidemiological model (SIR model) and we illustrate the construction of a class of models based on it.

Abstract

The Vietnamese Mekong Delta has undergone in recent years a considerable transformation in agricultural land-use, fueled by a boom of the exportation, an increase of population, a focus on intensive crops, but also environmental factors like sea level rise or the progression of soil salinity. These transformations have been, however, largely misestimated by the ten-year agricultural plans designed at the provincial levels, on the predictions of which, though, most of the large-scale investments (irrigation infrastructures, protection against flooding or salinity intrusion, and so on) are normally planned. This situation raises the question of how to explain the divergence between the predictions used as a basis for these plans and the actual situation. Answering it could, as a matter of fact, offer some insights on the dynamics at play and hopefully allow designing them more accurately.The dynamics of land-use change at a scale of a region results from the interactions between heterogeneous actors and factors at different scales, among them institutional policies, individual farming choices, land-cover and environmental changes, economic conditions, social dynamics, just to name a few. Understanding its evolution, for example, in this case, to better support agricultural planning, therefore requires the use of models that can represent the individual contributions of each actor or factor, and of course their interactions.We address this question through the design of an integrated hybrid model of land-use change in a specific and carefully chosen case study, which relies on the central hypothesis that the main force driving land-use change is actually the individual choices made by farmers at their local level. Abstract

International audience; The Mekong Delta region has been seriously affected by climate change, with increasing temperatures, sea-level rise, and salinization strongly impacting agricultural activities of the region. Recent studies have shown that groundwater exploitation also contributes significantly to land subsidence throughout the delta. Thus, combating climate change now makes it necessary to design strategies and policies for adapting to and mitigating climate change and subsidence, not only at the individual level (mainly farmers), but also at the institutional level (province and region). This study aims to build an integrated model for the purpose of exploring the socioeconomic impact of adaptation strategies provinces choose under various climate and economic scenarios. The LUCAS-GEMMES model (an agent-based model for strategies for adapting to land-use change in the context of climate change) was developed in order to evaluate socioeconomic factors, climate, and water use by farmers, as well as the subsidence dynamics and macroeconomic trends in land-use selection strategies. The simulations are carried out according to four main scenarios: (i) lack of provincial adaptation strategies and absence of subsidence dynamics, (ii) lack of adaptation strategies though subsidence and the impact of land-use production benefits, (iii) purely individual adaptation strategies combined with the impact of subsidence, and (iv) provincial and individual-scale adaptation combined with the impact of subsidence. In all the scenarios that consider subsidence, our results show that early response decisions to even low-level subsidence lead to many positive outcomes in water resource management, such as a significant reduction in water-use in the dry season and a reduction in the area vulnerable to subsidence and climate change. However, the same results also indicate a possible decrease in farmers' income due to reduced agricultural seasons and restricted land-use transformation, which demonstrates the importance of modeling the multi-sectoral aspects of adaptation. Finally, at a more general level, in the fourth scenario, the model clearly shows the benefits when provinces located in the same agro-ecological zone harmonize strategies, thus paving the way for defining integrated land-use policies at the regional level.

Abstract

International audience; The rice-shrimp farming system is considered as a sustainable and beneficial model for the environment. However, the area of rice-shrimp was increasingly narrowed due to the trend of converting from rice to aquaculture by economic reasons. This paper aims to propose a medium scale land use change model for understanding the land use decision of farmers in adaptation to the environment and climate change. The model integrates a land-use decision making process based on multi-criteria selection where the main factors are land suitability, land convertibility, land use situation of neighbors, and profitability of land use patterns. Concerning the land use data, we used historical land use map in 2005, 2015 and 2019. Shrimp cultivation regions was completed by Landsat satellite image processing. The model has been calibrated by rice-shrimp map in 2015 and has been verified with the rice – shrimp map in 2019 of the My Xuyen district, Soc Trang province, Vietnam. The simulated results show that the rice-shrimp area was increasingly narrowed and has been converted to aquaculture land. In addition, the model tends to show that in a scenario of sea level rise of 15 cm in 2030, the share of rice-shrimp and shrimp tends to rise sharply, which is an important lesson for developing complex adaptive strategies of farmers.

Abstract

This paper presents SGAC (Solution de Gestion Automatisée du Consentement / automated consent management solution), a new healthcare access control model and its support tool, which manages patient wishes regarding access to their electronic health records (EHR). This paper also presents the verification of access control policies for SGAC using two first-order-logic model checkers based on distinct technologies, Alloy and ProB. The development of SGAC has been achieved within the scope of a project with the University of Sherbrooke Hospital (CHUS), and thus has been adapted to take into account regional laws and regulations applicable in Québec and Canada, as they set bounds to patient wishes: for safety reasons, under strictly defined contexts, patient consent can be overriden to protect his/her life (break-the-glass rules). Since patient wishes and those regulations can be in conflict, SGAC provides a mechanism to address this problem based on priority, specificity and modality. In order to protect patient privacy while ensuring effective caregiving in safety-critical situations, we check four types of properties: accessibility, availability, contextuality and rule effectivity. We conducted performance tests comparison: implementation of SGAC versus an implementation of another access control model, XACML, and property verification with Alloy versus ProB. The performance results show that SGAC performs better than XACML and that ProB outperforms Alloy by two order of magnitude thanks to its programmable approach to constraint solving.

Abstract

Coupling models is becoming more and more important in the fields where modeling relies on interdisciplinary collaboration. This in particular the case in modeling complex systems which often require to either integrate different models at different spatial and temporal scales or to compare their outcomes. The goal of this research is to develop an original agent-based approach to support the coupling heterogeneous models. The architecture that we have designed is implemented in the GAMA modeling and simulation platform [6]. The benefits of our approach is to support coupling and combining various models of heterogeneous types (agent-based, equation-based, cellular automata ) in a flexible and explicit way. It also support the dynamic execution of the models which are supposed to be combined during experiments. We illustrate its use and powerfulness to solve existing problems of coupling between an agent-based model, equation-based model and GIS based model. The outcomes of the simulation of these three models show results compatible with the data observed in reality and demonstrate the interest of our approach for building large, multi-disciplinary models.

Abstract

In this paper we introduce a new approach to dynamic converting conceptual models in a simulation platform as the GAMA platform (represented in form of GAML syntax) into corresponding operational models (represented in form of Java syntax). This approach aims at providing a more flexible solutions to actual simulation models implemented in a simulation platform as the GAMA. This new approach will facilitate the exhibits of a simulation platform to work with different types of simulation models represented in different forms of syntax.

Abstract

International audience; Agent-based models tend to be more and more complex. In order to cope with this increase of complexity, powerful modeling and simulation tools are required. These last years have seen the development of several platforms dedicated to the development of agent-based models. While some of them are still limited to the development of simple models, others allow to develop rich and complex models. Among them, the GAMA modeling and simulation platform is aimed at supporting the design of spatialized, multiple-paradigms and multiple-scales models. Several papers have already introduced GAMA, notably in earlier PRIMA conferences, and we would like, in this paper, to introduce the new features provided by GAMA 1.6, the latest revision to date of the platform. In particular, we present its capabilities concerning the tight combination of 3D visualization, GIS data management, and multi-level modeling. In addition, we present some examples of real projects that rely on GAMA to develop complex models.
