This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant, antiarthritic, and anti-inflammatory properties of extracts from the leaves of twelve different medicinal plants in Nepal. We then evaluated the total phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin contents of the extract using in-vitro assays and characterized it using GC-MS analysis. Results revealed that most of the leaf extracts contained phenolic compounds, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and saponins. Few plants also showed the presence of glycosides, phytate, and vitamin C. Among the studied plants, Neolamarckia cadamba exhibited the highest total phenolic and tannin contents, as 241.53 ± 0.20 µg of gallic acid equivalent/mg and 74.48 ± 1.081 µg of tannic acid equivalent/mg, respectively. Ipomoea batatas exhibited the highest total flavonoid content, as 53.051 ± 1.11 µg of quercetin equivalent/mg. Moreover, Raphanus sativus demonstrated significant ferrous ion chelating, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, hydrogen peroxide scavenging, and total antioxidant activities with IC50 value of 4.76 ± 0.68 µg/mL, 5.84 ± 0.14 µg/mL, 6.89 ± 0.16 µg/mL, and 8.99 ± 0.20 µg/mL, respectively. Similarly, Colocasia esculenta and Cicer arietinum exhibited the highest hydroxyl radical and nitric oxide scavenging activities, measuring IC50 value of 7.22 ± 0.56 µg/mL and 9.06 ± 0.10 µg/mL, respectively. Among all the extracts, Amorphophallus paeoniifolius displayed significant human red blood cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization activity (IC50 = 6.22 ± 0.78 µg/mL). Furthermore, Raphanus sativus, Chenopodium album, Cicer arietinum, and Murraya koenigii exhibited the highest inhibitory activities against protein denaturation with bovine serum albumin, antiarthritic, lipoxygenase inhibitory, and proteinase inhibitory, measuring IC50 of 7.48 ± 0.48 µg/mL, 9.44 ± 1.62 µg/mL, 14.67 ± 1.94 µg/mL, and 28.57 ± 2.39 µg/mL, respectively. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the twelve leaf extracts' significant antioxidant, antiarthritic, and anti-inflammatory activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ganoderma lucidum has been extensively studied for its valuable medicinal importance. In this study, the artificial cultivation of G. lucidum strain Philippine in different culture media, including sawdust substrate, was performed and optimized on the Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) media. Phytochemical, antibacterial, and antioxidant analyses were performed and compared between the ethanol extracts prepared from two different cultures (fruit from synthetic log culture and mycelia from PDA media culture). Both the 200 mg/mL and 100 mg/mL concentrations of extracts inhibited all the tested bacteria, and the results were promising than the corresponding control using antibiotics. The fruit extract showed higher antioxidant potential (150.6 ± 56.92 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/g extract) than mycelial extract (144.28 ± 81.72 mg ascorbic acid equivalent/g extract). The results indicate that fruiting bodies of G. lucidum cultivated in a complex dust medium possess higher antioxidant properties than mycelia culture, which can be further explored for therapeutic applications. For an effective medical application of therapeutic siRNA, a safe and an efficient delivery system are required. Herein, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have been successfully used as siRNA delivery vehicles. Firstly, MNPs were coated with gold (Au) nanoparticles and then capped with PEI. To improve the biocompatibility of nanoparticles, hyaluronic acid (HA) was coated onto the surface of PEI-Au/Fe nanoparticles. The prepared HA-PEI-Au/Fe3O4 nanoparticles were characterized and found to be uniform and well segregated in TEM analysis. FTIR analysis confirmed that HA was successfully conjugated to PEI. The polymer content in these nanoparticles was relatively higher than PEG coated nanoparticles. Cell viability assay demonstrated that the nanoparticles were relatively biocompatible in nature. ADAM10 siRNA was loaded into the HA-PEI-Au/Fe3O4 nanoparticles and cytotoxicity to prostate cancer (PC3) cells was analyzed. The results indicate that ADAM10 siRNA loaded HA-PEI-Au/Fe3O4 suppress the PC3 cells growth in vitro. Clearly, it could be confirmed that HA-PEI coated Au/Fe3O4 nanoparticles with higher biocompatibility appear to be suitable for intracellular siRNA delivery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Maxillary sinus due to its proximity to posterior maxillary teeth could be affected by their pathology. Since cone beam computed tomography is the go-to for 3-D imaging in dental set-up. This study aimed to find out the prevalence of periodontal lesions among maxillary sinus mucosal thickening visiting the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology of a tertiary care centre., Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology of a tertiary care centre from 01 February 2021 to 30 June 2021 after obtaining ethical approval from the Institutional Review Committee. The medical records from 01 January 2019 to 31 December 2019 were retrieved. The identification of maxillary sinus mucosal thickening of more than 3 mm, in cone beam computed tomography images, was registered separately for the right and left sinuses of each patient. The presence of periodontal lesions of posterior teeth was recorded. A convenience sampling method was used. The point estimate was calculated at a 95% Confidence Interval., Results: Among 195 maxillary sinus mucosal thickening, periodontal lesions were found in 74 (37.95%) (31.14-44.76, 95% Confidence Interval) maxillary sinuses of 46 patients. The mean age was 53.67±12.72 years and 30 (65.21%) were males., Conclusions: The prevalence of periodontal lesions among maxillary sinus mucosal thickening in CBCT images was similar to other studies done in similar settings., Keywords: cone beam computed tomography; maxillary sinus; periodontal disease; prevalence.
