Abstract Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is known to have obesity as a risk factor. Body mass index cannot distinguish between lean mass and fat mass. We aimed to examine the association between predicted fat mass, predicted lean mass, predicted percent fat and risk of T2DM in Japanese adults. We also explored whether these three new parameters could predict T2DM better than other obesity markers. Methods This present study is a secondary data analysis. The study enrolled 20,944 Japanese individuals who participated in the NAGALA medical assessment program between 2004 and 2015. 15,453 participants who are eligible and have complete information were included to our analysis. Through the use of Kaplan-Meier curve, restricted cubic spline and univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis, the relationship between predicted fat mass, predicted lean mass, predicted percent fat and T2DM risk was examined. The area under the curve method was used to assess the differences between these markers of obesity. Results A total of 373 cases of T2DM occurred over a median time of 5.4 years. Background Acute kidney injury (AKI) is increasingly prevalent in children with nephrotic syndrome (NS). It is associated with adverse outcomes in NS, especially steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS). The incidence, risk factors and outcomes of AKI in secondary SRNS remain undefined. The main objectives of this study were to determine the risk factors and prognosis of AKI in hospitalized children with secondary SRNS.Material and methods This retrospective study was conducted from January 2014 to December 2019, involving 172 hospitalizations with secondary SRNS admitted to the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. AKI was defined and classified in accordance with the 2012 Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) guidelines.Results AKI was found in 67 (39.0%) of 172 hospitalizations with secondary SRNS. Average age of onset in our group is 4.4 (3.1, 6.7) years with AKI and 3.7 (1.8, 5.6) years without AKI. Urea nitrogen level is 5.9 (4.1, 10.0) mmol/L with AKI and 5.1 (3.7, 7.0) mmol/L. Uric acid level is 446.0 (340.0, 567.0) umol/L with AKI and 401.0 (303.0, 496.0) umol/L. 24-h urinary protein level is 4.14 (2.9, 6.5) g with AKI and 2.5 (1.3, 5.3) without AKI. Strawberries rapidly deteriorate postharvest, necessitating effective measures to extend their shelf life. This study focused on developing an eco-friendly chitosan-based protective film for strawberry preservation. Strawberries were treated with a coating solution containing varying concentrations of hawthorn leaf extract (HLE) (0.4%, 0.7%, and 1.0%), 1.5% chitosan (CH), and 1% acetic acid. The results demonstrated that coating strawberry fruit with 1% CH-HLE notably delayed fruit spoilage. In-depth analysis revealed that, compared with the uncoated strawberry fruits, the 1% CH-HLE coating effectively reduced weight loss, the respiration intensity, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and superoxide anion (O2·−) production. Additionally, the coated strawberries exhibited improved firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), vitamin C (Vc) content, titratable acidity (TA), and total phenolic compound (TPC) content. The enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in the CH-HLE-coated strawberries were greater than those in their uncoated counterparts. The application of a 1% CH-HLE coating successfully delayed spoilage and extend the shelf life of the strawberries by approximately 4–5 days. These findings suggest that CH-HLE has significant potential as a resource for protecting fruits and vegetables, offering an environmentally sustainable solution for postharvest preservation.

This study addresses the impacts of high-speed rail (HSR) on the employment rate on the periphery of HSR-connected cities. Using the Chinese municipal-level data sets of 2001 to 2017s, we have found that HSR could improve the average employment in peripheral cities on the route. However, HSR negatively affects employment in small and medium-sized peripheral cities while the large-sized peripheral cities benefit from its operation. Our evidence shows that the “siphon effect” on employment of large-sized peripheral cities on smaller neighbors happened specifically in the manufacturing sectors. This study provides important policy implications for HSR cities with different sizes and characteristics. Small- and medium-sized periphery HSR cities could appropriately response to HSR operation by readjusting the structure of manufacturing sectors, in order to avoiding employment loss.

Abstract Background In the global aging population, the incidence of postoperative delirium (POD) is increasing. Therefore, finding its effective predictive tools becomes crucial. We aimed to identify potential Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)biomarkers for POD. Methods A total of 825 patients undergoing knee/hip arthroplasty under combined spinal-epidural anesthesia were selected. The patients were aged 40 to 90 years with American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I~II. The Mini-Mental State Examination was completed 1 day before the operation. CSF was extracted after successful spinal-epidural combined puncture, and α-synuclein (α-syn), amyloid beta40 (Aβ40), amyloid beta42 (Aβ42), t-Tau, phosphorylated Tau (p-Tau), progranulin (PGRN) and soluble triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (sTREM2) in the CSF were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA). The patient’s operation time, anesthesia time, intraoperative blood loss and fluid input were also recorded. After the operation, the occurrence rate and severity of POD were determined by the Confusion Assessment Method and the Memorial Delirium Assessment Scale (MDAS), respectively. Patients were categorized into POD group and non-POD group. Logistic regression analysis was performed on the indicators with statistically significant differences, and the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was used to estimate the predictive accuracy of the biomarkers for POD. Results A total of 92 patients developed POD and the incidence of POD was 11.15%. Dynamic economic emission dispatch (DEED) is a fundamental and meaningful issue for a power system from the perspectives of economy and environment protection. In the mean time, reliability is an important criterion for a power system from the perspectives of maintenance and operation. Therefore, we propose an improved NSGA-III (I-NSGA-III) for the dynamic economic emission dispatch considering reliability (DEEDR). I-NSGA-III uses a novel crossover operator based on the normal distribution and an angle-based association strategy. The former produces an offspring by using the normal distribution to fully explore and exploit the solution space while remaining a relatively high population diversity. The latter considers the angle between a normalized objective vector and a reference vector as a criterion for the association operation, which is more direct and efficient to evenly distribute individuals with the same rank in the objective space. According to the indicators hypervolume and coverage in the experiments, I-NSGA-III can achieve a series of nondominated solutions with wider spread, higher diversity and stronger convergence in comparison with the other four multi-objective optimization algorithms (MOAs). Therefore, I-NSGA-III can efficiently coordinate the benefits of fuel cost, pollutant emission and system reliability, and it is a competitive and potential algorithm for DEED and DEEDR.

Abstract Acupuncture is used in the treatment of a variety of inflammatory conditions and diseases. However, the mechanisms of its anti-inflammatory action are complex and have not been systematically investigated. Macrophages are key components of the innate immune system, thus, balancing the M1/M2 macrophage ratio and modulating cytokine levels in the inflammatory environment may be desirable therapeutic goals. Evidence has shown that acupuncture has anti-inflammatory actions that affect multiple body systems, including the immune, locomotory, endocrine, nervous, digestive, and respiratory systems, by downregulating pro-inflammatory M1 and upregulating anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages, as well as by modulating associated cytokine secretion. Macrophage polarization is controlled by the interlocking pathways of extrinsic factors, the local tissue microenvironment, and the neural-endocrine-immune systems. It has been suggested that polarization of T lymphocytes and cytokine secretions resulting in modulation of the autonomic nervous system and the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis, may be upstream mechanisms of acupuncture-induced macrophage polarization. We further propose that macrophage polarization could be the principal pathway involved in acupuncture immune regulation and provide the scientific basis for the clinical application of acupuncture in inflammatory conditions.

BackgroundMutation in the COQ8B gene can cause COQ8B glomerular nephropathy (COQ8B-GN), which is rare and associated with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (SRNS) as well as rapid progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The aim of this study was to analyze the prognosis and recurrence risk of COQ8B-GN in patients after kidney transplantation (KTx) and summarize the characteristics of the Chinese population.MethodsA retrospective study included four cases treated in our hospital with a diagnosis of COQ8B-GN. Chinese and foreign studies were searched from database inception to February 2022.ResultsA total of four cases were included, with the age of onset ranging from 4 to 9 years. The initial presentations were SRNS and asymptomatic proteinuria. Only one had an extrarenal manifestation (thyroid cyst). All patients progressed to ESRD at a mean time of 42 months after onset. With a total follow-up time ranging from 12 to 87 months, three of them had received transplantation. While one case needed a second KTx due to graft failure caused by chronic rejection, two recipients had excellent graft function. No recurrence in allograft was observed. There have been 18 cases of KTx recipients reported globally with follow-up information. Except for two cases of graft failure caused by hyperacute rejection and chronic rejection, respectively, the rest all had good graft function without recurrence. In addition, 44 cases of COQ8B-GN in the Chinese population were identified. At the onset, 75% of the patients were aged ≤10 years with initial symptoms of asymptomatic proteinuria, nephrotic syndrome (NS), or SRNS. By the time of literature publication, 59% of patients had progressed to ESRD (mean age of 10.3 ± 3.6 years). The median time from onset to ESRD was 21 months. Renal pathology mainly showed focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), accounting for 61.8% of all biopsies, followed by mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (20.6%). The first three prevalent mutations in the COQ8B gene among the Chinese population were c. 748G>C, c. 737G>A, and c. 532C>T.ConclusionCOQ8B-GN in the Chinese population may present with asymptomatic proteinuria, NS, or SRNS initially, with most onsets before the age of 10 years. A lot of patients progress to ESRD in early adolescence. FSGS on biopsy and c. 748G>C in the genetic test are the most frequently seen in Chinese COQ8B-GN patients. KTx is feasible for patients with ESRD due to the low risk of recurrence, but we should pay attention to graft rejection.

BackgroundPostoperative delirium is common in elderly patients following major surgery. This study aimed to assess the effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation combined with auricular acupressure on the incidence of postoperative delirium among older patients undergoing major abdominal surgery.MethodsIn this single-center, randomized controlled clinical trial, 210 patients aged 65 years or older undergoing major abdominal surgery were randomized to receive either intervention treatment (transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation started at 30 min before anesthesia until the end of the surgery, followed by intermittent auricular acupressure in the first three postoperative days; n = 105) or standard care (n = 105). The primary outcome was the incidence of delirium at the first seven postoperative days or until hospitalization depended on which came first. Secondary outcomes included delirium severity, opioid consumption, postoperative pain score, sleep quality, length of postoperative hospital stay, and postoperative 30-day complications. Enrollment was from April 2019 to March 2020, with follow-up ending in April 2020.ResultsAll of the 210 randomized patients [median age, 69.5 years, 142 (67.6%) male] completed the trial. The incidence of postoperative delirium was significantly reduced in patients received intervention treatment (19/105 (18.1%) vs. 8/105 (7.6%), difference, –10.5% [95% CI, –1.5% to –19.4%]; hazard ratio, 0.41 [95% CI, 0.18 to 0.95]; P= 0.023). Patients in the control group had a higher postoperative Memorial Delirium Assessment Scale (4 vs. 3; difference, –1; 95% CI, –1 to 0; P = 0.014) and a greater increase in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score from baseline to postoperative day three (2.5 vs. 2.0; difference, –1; 95% CI, –2 to –1; P < 0.001) than patients in the intervention group. No significant difference was observed as of other secondary outcomes.ConclusionIn elderly patients undergoing major abdominal surgery, transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation combined with auricular acupressure reduced the incidence of postoperative in-hospital delirium compared with standard care. In 1999, the Chinese government implemented a higher education enrollment expansion policy to improve education equality. Now, its positive impact on educational equality is contested. This study attempts to identify the link between city administrative level and tertiary attainment in the context of the policy. Our empirical findings indicate that after implementation of the policy, inequality increased. Students from political and economic centers had more opportunities for tertiary education attainment. This policy has a greater impact on disparities in access to undergraduate education for individuals living in different administrative hierarchies than it does on specialist education.

Atherosclerosis (AS) is a life-threatening vascular disease. RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification level is dysregulated in multiple pathophysiologic processes including AS. In this text, the roles and molecular mechanisms of m6A writer METTL3 in AS progression were explored in vitro and in vivo. In the present study, cell proliferative, migratory, and tube formation capacities were assessed through CCK-8, Transwell migration, and tube formation assays, respectively. RNA m6A level was examined through a commercial kit. RNA and protein levels of genes were measured through RT-qPCR and western blot assays, respectively. VEGF secretion level was tested through ELISA assay. JAK2 mRNA stability was detected through actinomycin D assay. The relationship of METTL3, IGF2BP1, and JAK2 was investigated through bioinformatics analysis, MeRIP, RIP, RNA pull-down, and luciferase reporter assays. An AS mouse model was established to examine the effect of METTL3 knockdown on AS development in vivo. The angiogenetic activity was examined through chick chorioallantoic membrane assay in vivo. The results showed that METTL3 was highly expressed in ox-LDL-induced dysregulated HUVECs. METTL3 knockdown inhibited cell proliferation, migration, tube formation, and VEGF expression/secretion in ox-LDL-treated HUVECs, hampered AS process in vivo, and prevented in vivo angiogenesis of developing embryos. METTL3 positively regulated JAK2 expression and JAK2/STAT3 pathway in an m6A dependent manner in HUVECs. IGF2BP1 positively regulated JAK2 expression through directly binding to an m6A site within JAK2 mRNA in HUVECs. METTL3 knockdown weakened the interaction of JAK2 and IGF2BP1. METTL3 exerted its functions through JAK2/STAT3 pathway. In conclusion, METTL3 knockdown prevented AS progression by inhibiting JAK2/STAT3 pathway via IGF2BP1.

Hyperglycemia is generally considered to be an important cause of diabetic retinopathy (DR). The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of miR-5195-3p in high glucose (HG)-induced human retinal pigment epithelial ARPE-19 cell injury. Here, we first found that the expression level of miR-5195-3p was significantly downregulated in HG-stimulated ARPE-19 cells using reverse transcription quantitative PCR. Overexpression of miR-5195-3p attenuated the impaired cell viability, increased apoptosis and pro-inflammatory cytokines secretion in ARPE-19 cells under HG condition using CCK-8 assay, flow cytometry and ELISA assay, respectively. Luciferase reporter assay showed that miR-5195-3p could specifically bind to the 3’UTR of glia maturation factor-β (GMFB). GMFB overexpression reversed, while knockdown enhanced the protective effects of miR-5195-3p overexpression against HG-induced ARPE-19 cell injury. In summary, miR-5195-3p targeting GMFB might be a potential therapeutic target for DR.

“Lipotoxicity” induced by free fatty acids (FAs) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of many metabolic diseases, with few treatment options available today. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a novel gaseous signaling molecule, has been reported to have a variety of pharmacological properties, but its effect on FAs metabolism remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect and mechanisms of anethole dithiolethione (ADT, a sustained-release H2S donor) on hepatic FAs metabolism. ADT was administered daily for 4 weeks in male Syrian golden hamsters fed a high fat diet (HFD), and FAs profiles of liver tissues were analyzed using GC-MS. The results showed that in HFD-fed hamsters, ADT treatment significantly reduced the accumulation of toxic saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids (C16:0, C18:0, C16:1, and C18:1n9), while increased the content of n-6 and n-3 series polyunsaturated fatty acids (C20:3n6, C20:4n6, and C22:6n3). Mechanistically, ADT obviously inhibited the overexpression of acetyl-CoA carboxylase1 (ACC1), fatty acid synthase (FAS), and stearoyl-CoA desaturase1 (SCD1), and up-regulated the levels of fatty acid transport proteins (FATPs), liver fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP), carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1α (CPT1α), fatty acid desaturase (FADS)1 and FADS2. Notably, ADT administration significantly promoted Mitofusin1-mediated mitochondrial fusion and fatty acid β-oxidation. These findings suggest that ADT plays a beneficial role by regulating the synthesis, desaturation, β-oxidation, uptake, binding/isolation, and transport of FAs. In conclusion, ADT is effective in improving FAs metabolic disorders and liver injuries caused by HFD, which renders ADT a candidate drug for lipotoxicity-induced diseases.

In addition to being key pathogens in plants, animals, and humans, fungi are also valuable resources in agriculture, food, medicine, industry, and the environment. The elimination of pathogenic fungi and the functional enhancement of beneficial fungi have been the major topics investigated by researchers. Non-thermal plasma (NTP) is a potential tool to inactivate pathogenic and food-spoiling fungi and functionally enhance beneficial fungi. In this review, we summarize and discuss research performed over the last decade on the use of NTP to treat both harmful and beneficial yeast- and filamentous-type fungi. NTP can efficiently inactivate fungal spores and eliminate fungal contaminants from seeds, fresh agricultural produce, food, and human skin. Studies have also demonstrated that NTP can improve the production of valuable enzymes and metabolites in fungi. Further studies are still needed to establish NTP as a method that can be used as an alternative to the conventional methods of fungal inactivation and activation.

Abstract Background Viral disease has become the most severe constraint for the cultivation and production of Passiflora edulis in China. The infection of Telosma mosaic virus (TeMV), a potyvirus, and its effects on the phytochemical components of P. edulis remain largely unknown in China. Methods P. edulis plants showing distorted leaves and severe mosaic skin on green fruit were identified with TeMV infection through traditional transmission electron microscopy, RT-PCR and modern small RNA sequencing (sRNA-seq) platform. The contents of phytochemical components and the activities of antioxidative enzymes were compared between virus-infected and virus-free P. edulis to confirm the effects of TeMV infection on host plant. Results Firstly, approximately 700 nm linear virus particles, representing TeMV, were detected in infected P. edulis fruits and leaves with Electron microscopy. Partial coat protein genes of TeMV were successfully amplified by RT-PCR in infected P. edulis leaves and fruits but not in healthy plants. Abundant small interference RNAs (siRNAs) sequences, showing several characterizations, were specifically generated from the TeMV genome in infected plant fruits by sRNA-seq platform. Furthermore, fruit length, fruit thickness (wideness) and fruit weight decreased significantly due to TeMV infection. The levels of total protein and total sugar increased significantly; however, the level of total fat, total acid and vitamin C decreased obviously after TeMV infection. The level of total phenols, a secondary metabolite, was obviously higher in TeMV-infected than TeMV-free P. edulis fruit. The activities of superoxide dismutases (SOD) and catalases (CAT) obviously increased in TeMV-infected in comparison with healthy P. edulis fruit. Conclusions TeMV infection adversely affected the development of P. edulis fruits, differently and selectively modulated the phytochemical components of P. edulis fruits. In turn, P. edulis plants enhanced their tolerance to the stress of TeMV infection by increasing the secondary metabolite level and the antioxidative capacity. This is of significant importance to understand the effects of TeMV infection on the biochemical changes and the antioxidant defense mechanism in P. edulis.

Antifungal activities of MOFs (metal organic frameworks) have been demonstrated in studies, and improvement in efficiency of fungal inactivation is a critical issue in the application of MOFs. In this study, we employed 4,4′-azopyridine (AZPY) in the construction of MOF to improve its antifungal activity. Three-dimensional (3D) copper metal organic framework containing glutarate (Glu) and AZPY (Cu(AZPY)-MOF) was synthesized by a solvothermal reaction. Glutarates bridge Cu2 dinuclear units to form two-dimensional (2D) layers, and these layers are connected by AZPY to form a 3D framework. When spores of two fungi, Candida albicans and Aspergillus niger, were treated with Cu(AZPY)-MOF for one day, number of CFU (colony forming unit) was continuously reduced over treated MOF concentrations, and maximum 2.3 and 2.5 log10CFU reductions (approximately 99% reduction) were observed in C. albicans and A. niger, respectively. Small amounts of CuII ions and AZPY released from Cu(AZPY)-MOF were not critical for fungal inactivation. Our results indicate that the level of antifungal activity of Cu(AZPY)-MOF is greater than that of Cu-MOF without AZPY constructed in our previous study, and intercalation of AZPY is able to improve the antifungal activity of Cu(AZPY)-MOF.

Abstract Background Cerebral edema, erupting simultaneously with severe ischemic stroke, might lead to increased intracranial pressure, cerebral herniation, and ultimately death. Studies conducted previously by our team have demonstrated the fact that bloodletting puncture at hand twelve Jing-well points (HTWP) could alleviate cerebral edema, which mainly results from the disruption of blood-brain barrier (BBB). The study, therefore, was first designed to demonstrate whether BBB-protection serves an important role in the edema-relief effect of HTWP bloodletting, based on which to research the molecular mechanism underlying. Methods The rats were made into model suffering from permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) and then bloodletting puncture were treated at HTWP once a day. Wet and dry weight method was adopted to evaluate the degree of brain edema, evans blue extravasation and electron microscopy were used to evaluate the integrity of the BBB, and RT-qPCR was carried out to analyze the expression level of occludin, claudin-5, ICAM-1, and VEGF. Results Results revealed that bloodletting puncture treatment could reduce water content of brain and the permeability of BBB caused by ischemic stroke. In bloodletting puncture group, ameliorated tight junctions could be observed under electron microscopy. It was demonstrated in further study that, in bloodletting group, compared with pMCAO one, the expression levels of occludin and claudin-5 were up-regulated, while ICAM-1 and VEGF were down-regulated. Conclusions In conclusion, bloodletting puncture at HTWP might play a significant role in protecting the tight junctions of BBB, thus alleviating cerebral edema induced by ischemic stroke. Therefore, the therapy of bloodletting puncture at HTWP may be a promising strategy for acute ischemic stroke in the future.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate serum levels of soluble B-cell maturation antigen (sBCMA) in childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematous (cSLE) patients with renal involvement, and to elucidate their association with clinical characteristics. Methods: 116 cases of cSLE patients with renal involvement (84 females and 32 males; median age 11.6 (10.1, 12.9) years) hospitalized in Department of Pediatric Nephrology and Rheumatology, the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University and 31 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. Serum concentrations of sBCMA were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Clinical and laboratory information of cSLE patients were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Serum sBCMA levels were significantly increased in primary cSLE when compared with treated cSLE patients and HCs, whereas there was no significant difference between treated cSLE patients and HCs. Patients with high disease activity displayed higher serum sBCMA levels compared with those with no or mild to moderate disease activity. Positive correlation was observed between serum sBCMA levels and systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index-2K (SLEDAI-2K), antinuclear antibody titers, anti-double-stranded DNA titers, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, and immunoglobulin G levels, while sBCMA levels were negatively correlated with blood white blood cell count, hemoglobin, platelet count, complement C3 and C4 levels. Serum sBCMA levels decreased as disease ameliorated after treatments among 11 cases with follow-up examinations. Conclusions: In cSLE patients with renal involvement, serum sBCMA levels correlated significantly with disease activity, immunological, and hematological parameters, but not with renal parameters. Objective: Diabetic encephalopathy (DE), a chronic complication of diabetes, is characterized by decline of cognitive function. The molecular mechanism of DE remains unclear. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the roles of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in the pathogenesis of DE and investigate its underlying mechanisms in this process. Methods: DE rats were developed by incorporating a high-fat diet and streptozotocin injection followed by the Morris Water Maze test. HT-22 cells were used to mimic the in vitro neuronal injuries of DE. Expression levels of long non-coding RNA H19, miR-15b and β-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme 1 (BACE1) mRNA in the hippocampus of DE rats or HT-22 cells were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The levels of BACE1 proteins were analyzed by western blotting or immunohistochemical staining. The contents of Aβ1–42 in supernatant of the cell culture were analyzed by enzyme-linked immu-nosorbent assay (ELISA). The relationship between H19 or BACE1 and miR-15b was verified with dual-luciferase reporter assay. Results: We found that the accumulation of Aβ1–42 and the phosphorylation of Tau (Ser404) were increased in the hippocampus CA3 regionof DE rats. MiR-15b was downregulated while H19 and BACE1 were upregulated in the hippocampus CA3 regionof DE rats and AGEs-treated HT-22 cells. The expression of BACE1 protein was negatively regulated by miR-15b at the post-transcriptional level in HT-22 cells. In vivo, administration of miR-15b mimics by the intranasal delivery markedly decreased the BACE1 protein in hippocampal CA3 region and improved the cognitive decline in DE rats. Besides, the luciferase activity assay confirmed the binding site of miR-15b to both the 3′-untranslated region (3′-UTR) of BACE1 mRNA and H19. Then, miR-15b inhibitor reversed H19 knockdown-mediated decrease of Aβ1–42 level in AGEs-treated HT-22 cells. Conclusion: These results suggested that AGEs induced Aβ1–42 deposition andcognitive decline through H19/miR-15b/ BACE1 axis in DE.

Turbulent diffuse molecular clouds can exhibit complicated morphologies caused by the interactions among radiation, chemistry, fluids, and fields. We performed full 3D simulations for turbulent diffuse molecular interstellar media, featuring time-dependent nonequilibrium thermochemistry coevolved with magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Simulation results exhibit the relative abundances of key chemical species (e.g., C, CO, OH) vary by more than one order of magnitude for the “premature” epoch of chemical evolution ( t ≲ 2 × 10 ^5 yr). Various simulations are also conducted to study the impacts of physical parameters. Nonideal MHD effects are essential in shaping the behavior of gases, and strong magnetic fields (∼10 μ G) tend to inhibit vigorous compressions and thus reduce the fraction of warm gases ( T ≳ 10 ^2 K). Thermodynamical and chemical conditions of the gas are sensitive to modulation by dynamic conditions, especially the energy injection by turbulence. Chemical features, including ionization (cosmic ray and diffuse interstellar radiation), would not directly affect the turbulence power spectra. Nonetheless, their effects are prominent in the distribution profiles of temperatures and gas densities. Comprehensive observations are necessary and useful to eliminate the degeneracies of physical parameters and constrain the properties of diffuse molecular clouds with confidence.

Although the existing cardiac diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) denoising methods have achieved promising results, most of them are dependent on the number of diffusion gradient directions, noise distributions, and noise levels. To address these issues, we propose a novel self-supervised cardiac DTI denoising network, Node2Node, which firstly expresses the diffusion-weighted (DW) image volumes along different directions as a graph, then the graph framelet transform (GFT) is implemented to map the DW signals into the GFT coefficients at different spectral bands, allowing us to accurately match the DW image pairs. After that, using the matched image pairs as input and target, a ResNet-like network is used to denoise in a self-supervised manner. In addition, a novel edge-aware loss based on pooling operation is proposed to retain the edge. Through comparison with several state-of-the-art methods on synthetic, ex vivo porcine, and in vivo human cardiac DTI datasets, we showed that the root mean square error (RMSE) of DW images and the average angular error (AAE) of fiber orientations obtained using Node2Node are the smallest, improved by 47.5% and 23.7%, respectively, on the synthetic dataset, demonstrating that Node2Node is not sensitive to the properties of the dataset.

The objective of this work was to investigate the effects of sodium replacement on the textural properties and water-holding capacity (WHC) of heatset freshwater surimi gels. Potassium chloride and calcium chloride were chosen as salt substitutes. The surimi gels presented better water-holding capacity with potassium chloride than the treatments containing calcium chloride. Gel strength and rheological properties indicated that monovalent metal ions could improve surimi gel properties. The contents of chemical interactions, especially disulfide bonds, nondisulfide covalent bonds, and hydrophobic interactions of surimi gels, varied with the addition of salt type and concentration. Furthermore, microstructure observed from scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) demonstrated that surimi gels prepared with monovalent salt presented more compact and denser networks, while more aggregated particles existed in gels with calcium chloride. Aging is the greatest risk factor for human diseases, as it results in cellular growth arrest, impaired tissue function and metabolism, ultimately impacting life span. Two different mechanisms are thought to be primary causes of aging. One is cumulative DNA damage induced by a perpetuating cycle of oxidative stress; the other is nutrient-sensing adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and rapamycin (mTOR)/ribosomal protein S6 (rpS6) pathways. As the main bioactive component of natural Chinese medicine rhizoma coptidis (RC), berberine has recently been reported to expand life span in Drosophila melanogaster, and attenuate premature cellular senescence. Most components of RC including berberine, coptisine, palmatine, and jatrorrhizine have been found to have beneficial effects on hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia and hypertension aging-related diseases. The mechanism of these effects involves multiple cellular kinase and signaling pathways, including anti-oxidation, activation of AMPK signaling and its downstream targets, including mTOR/rpS6, Sirtuin1/forkhead box transcription factor O3 (FOXO3), nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor-2 (Nrf2), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) and nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) pathways. Most of these mechanisms converge on AMPK regulation on mitochondrial oxidative stress. Therefore, such evidence supports the possibility that rhizoma coptidis, in particular berberine, is a promising anti-aging natural product, and has pharmaceutical potential in combating aging-related diseases via anti-oxidation and AMPK cellular kinase activation. Low shear stress (LSS) is a well-established risk factor resulting in endothelial apoptosis and atherosclerosis. Autophagy has been reported to be involved in the development of atherosclerosis. However, whether autophagy participates in LSS-induced atherosclerosis remains unclear. The effect of autophagy and its association with apoptosis, in the development of atherosclerosis, remains controversial. Therefore, in the present study, the level and role of autophagy in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) exposed to LSS was examined. The results revealed that LSS increased the formation of autophagosomes and MAP1 light chain 3-like protein (LC3) puncta (as demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy and immunofluorescence), and the protein levels of Beclin-1 and LC3II decreased the expression of p62 [as revealed by western blot analysis (WB)]. Furthermore, the level of p62 decreased when autophagy was induced by rapamycin, and increased when autophagy was inhibited by chloroquine (CQ), which indicated that LSS may serve an important role in inducing autophagy flux. In addition, it was observed that HUVECs treated with LSS underwent apoptotic death, by monitoring the rate of apoptosis and the expression of apoptosis regulator BAX (Bax) and apoptosis regulator Bcl-2 (Bcl-2) (by flow cytometry and WB) and the LSS-induced apoptosis in HUVECs, that was significantly alleviated by pretreatment with rapamycin, partially via a decrease in the level of Bax and an increase in the level of Bcl-2. Pretreatment of HUVECs with CQ markedly increased LSS-induced apoptosis, which was associated with an increased expression of Bax and a decreased expression of Bcl-2. In conclusion, the results of the present study indicate that LSS increases the level of autophagy, which may be through a Bcl-2/Beclin-1-dependent mechanism, which serves a protective role against LSS-induced apoptosis. In order to find a clean, efficient and sustainable new energy source that can replace fossil fuels, hydrogen energy is considered to be the most ideal choice. Electrocatalytic oxygen evolution plays a vital role in the development of hydrogen energy, promotes the research of new electrocatalysts, and is dedicated to find materials with high electrocatalytic efficiency. This article discusses in detail the major developments in OER electrocatalysts, including recently reported metal and non-metal based materials. Metal-based catalysts, although having the advantages of high catalytic activity, have disadvantages such as poor stability and low selectivity, which hinder the further application of such materials. Non-metallic based materials avoid such disadvantages and exhibit very substantial performance in overall water decomposition. This review provides useful knowledge of a well-designed OER electrocatalyst and a possible strategy for OER/HER dual-function catalytic performance for future development. The Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Survey of Star Formation and Evolution in Massive Protoclusters with Blue Profiles (ASSEMBLE) aims to investigate the process of mass assembly and its connection to high-mass star formation theories in protoclusters in a dynamic view. We observed 11 massive ( M _clump ≳ 10 ^3 M _⊙ ), luminous ( L _bol ≳ 10 ^4 L _⊙ ), and blue-profile (infall signature) clumps by ALMA with resolution of ∼2200–5500 au (median value of 3500 au) at 350 GHz (870 μ m). We identified 248 dense cores, including 106 cores showing protostellar signatures and 142 prestellar core candidates. Compared to early stage infrared dark clouds (IRDCs) by ASHES, the core mass and surface density within the ASSEMBLE clumps exhibited a significant increment, suggesting concurrent core accretion during the evolution of the clumps. The maximum mass of prestellar cores was found to be 2 times larger than that in IRDCs, indicating that evolved protoclusters have the potential to harbor massive prestellar cores. The mass relation between clumps and their most massive core (MMCs) is observed in ASSEMBLE but not in IRDCs, which is suggested to be regulated by multiscale mass accretion. The mass correlation between the core clusters and their MMCs has a steeper slope compared to that observed in stellar clusters, which can be due to fragmentation of the MMC and stellar multiplicity. We observe a decrease in core separation and an increase in central concentration as protoclusters evolve. We confirm primordial mass segregation in the ASSEMBLE protoclusters, possibly resulting from gravitational concentration and/or gas accretion.

Ions (e.g., ${{\rm{H}}}_{3}^{+}$ , H _2 O ^+ ) have been used extensively to quantify the cosmic-ray ionization rate (CRIR) in diffuse sightlines. However, measurements of the CRIR in low-to-intermediate density gas environments are rare, especially when background stars are absent. In this work, we combine molecular line observations of CO, OH, CH, and HCO ^+ in the star-forming cloud IC 348, and chemical models to constrain the value of the CRIR and study the response of the distribution of chemical abundances. The cloud boundary is found to have an A _V of approximately 4 mag. From the interior to the exterior of the cloud, the observed ^13 CO line intensities drop by an order of magnitude. The calculated average abundance of ^12 CO (assuming ^12 C/ ^13 C=65) is (1.2 ± 0.9) × 10 ^−4 , which decreases by a factor of 6 from the interior to the outside regions. The average abundance of CH (3.3 ± 0.7 × 10 ^−8 ) is in good agreement with previous findings in diffuse and translucent clouds ( A _V < 5 mag). However, we did not find a decline in CH abundance in regions of high extinction ( A _V ≃ 8 mag) as previously reported in Taurus. By comparing the observed molecular abundances and chemical models, we find a decreasing trend of the CRIR as A _V increases. The inferred CRIR of ζ _cr = (4.7 ± 1.5) × 10 ^−16 s ^−1 at low A _V is consistent with ${{\rm{H}}}_{3}^{+}$ measurements toward two nearby massive stars.

The cosmic-ray ionization rate (CRIR, ζ _2 ) is one of the key parameters controlling the formation and destruction of various molecules in molecular clouds. However, the current most commonly used CRIR tracers, such as ${{\rm{H}}}_{3}^{+}$ , OH ^+ , and H _2 O ^+ , are hard to detect and require the presence of background massive stars for absorption measurements. In this work, we propose an alternative method to infer the CRIR in diffuse clouds using the abundance ratios of OH/CO and HCO ^+ /CO. We have analyzed the response of chemical abundances of CO, OH, and HCO ^+ on various environmental parameters of the interstellar medium in diffuse clouds and found that their abundances are proportional to ζ _2 . Our analytic expressions give an excellent calculation of the abundance of OH for ζ _2 ≤ 10 ^−15 s ^−1 , which are potentially useful for modeling chemistry in hydrodynamical simulations. The abundances of OH and HCO ^+ were found to monotonically decrease with increasing density, while the CO abundance shows the opposite trend. With high-sensitivity absorption transitions of both CO (1–0) and (2–1) lines from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, we have derived the H _2 number densities ( ${n}_{{{\rm{H}}}_{2}}$ ) toward 4 lines of sight; assuming a kinetic temperature of T _k = 50 K, we find a range of (0.14 ± 0.03–1.2 ± 0.1) × 10 ^2 cm ^−3 . By comparing the observed and modeled HCO ^+ /CO ratios, we find that ζ _2 in our diffuse gas sample is in the range of ${1.0}_{-1.0}^{+14.8}$ × 10 ${}^{-16}\mbox{--}{2.5}_{-2.4}^{+1.4}$ × 10 ^−15 s ^−1 . This is ∼2 times higher than the average value measured at higher extinction, supporting an attenuation of CRs as suggested by theoretical models.

Introduction: The aim of this study, which will include randomised controlled trials (RCTs), is to assess the efficacy and safety of acupuncture for patients with stroke and urinary incontinence. Methods and analysis: RCTs will be searched electronically in the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane CENTRAL, CINAHL and four Chinese medical databases from their inception to present. Manual retrieval will also be conducted. RCTs will be included if acupuncture was evaluated as the sole or adjunct treatment for patients with stroke and urinary incontinence. The primary outcome will be measured by using the pad-weighing test. The secondary outcomes will include urination diary, bladder capacity, clinical symptom scores, the number of patients healed completely in trial follow-up period and adverse events. The study selection, data extraction and evaluation of study quality will be performed independently by two researchers. The methodological quality of the included trials will be assessed by using the Cochrane risk-ofbias criteria and the Standards for Reporting Interventions in Controlled Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA) checklist. PLA-1-Al2O3@LNCM synthesized using an efficient and facile plasma-enhanced method exhibits markedly improved capacity retention of 98.6% after 100 cycles, which is much larger than that of LNCM at 80% after 100 cycles. What is more, it also exhibits significantly enhanced cyclicity compared to that of 1-Al2O3@LNCM cathodes prepared using the normal solid state method, which further illustrates the efficiency and superiority of this plasma-enhanced method. More importantly, the rate performance of PLA-1-Al2O3@LNCM is improved because of the better electrolyte storage of the assembled hierarchical architecture of the Al2O3 coating layer according to unimpeded Li+ diffusion from electrode to electrolyte. When cycling at 55°C, the PLA-1-Al2O3@LNCM shows 93.6% capacity retention after 100 cycles, which is greatly enhanced due to the uniform Al2O3 layer. Further, growth of polarization impedance during cycling can be effectively suppressed by the Al2O3 layer, which can further confirm the effect the Al2O3 layer coated on the surface of the LNCM. The enhanced cycling performance and thermal stability illustrates that this facile surface modification, using the plasma-enhanced method, can form an effective structured coating layer, which indicates its prospects as an application in the modification of other electrode materials.

China is rich of germplasm resources of common wild rice (Oryza rufipogon Griff.) and Asian cultivated rice (O. sativa L.) which consists of two subspecies, indica and japonica. Previous studies have shown that China is one of the domestication centers of O. sativa. However, the geographic origin and the domestication times of O. sativa in China are still under debate. To settle these disputes, six chloroplast loci and four mitochondrial loci were selected to examine the relationships between 50 accessions of Asian cultivated rice and 119 accessions of common wild rice from China based on DNA sequence analysis in the present study. The results indicated that Southern China is the genetic diversity center of O. rufipogon and it might be the primary domestication region of O. sativa. Molecular dating suggested that the two subspecies had diverged 0.1 million years ago, much earlier than the beginning of rice domestication. Genetic differentiations and phylogeography analyses indicated that indica was domesticated from tropical O. rufipogon while japonica was domesticated from O. rufipogon which located in higher latitude. These results provided molecular evidences for the hypotheses of (i) Southern China is the origin center of O. sativa in China and (ii) the two subspecies of O. sativa were domesticated multiple times.
