Magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) have been intensively investigated because of their potential biomedical applications due to their high saturation magnetization. In this study, core–shell Fe3O4@C NPs (core = Fe3O4 NPs and shell = amorphous carbons, davg = 35.1 nm) were synthesized in an aqueous solution. Carbon coating terminated with hydrophilic –OH and –COOH groups imparted excellent biocompatibility and hydrophilicity to the NPs, making them suitable for biomedical applications. The Fe3O4@C NPs exhibited ideal relaxometric properties for T2 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (i.e., high transverse and negligible longitudinal water proton spin relaxivities), making them exclusively induce only T2 relaxation. Lead oxide (PbO) nanoparticles are promising candidates for X-ray contrast agents because Pb (atomic number = 82) possesses the second largest X-ray attenuation coefficient of all nonradioactive elements in the periodic table. However, few studies have been conducted on PbO nanoparticles. This study is the first to synthesize hydrophilic and biocompatible polymer-grafted ultrasmall PbO nanoparticles with a polyol method. In addition, their potential as X-ray contrast agents was investigated in vitro and in vivo. Three kinds of polymers, namely poly-(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) (PMVEMA), poly-(acrylic acid-co-maleic acid) (PAAMA), and poly-(acrylic acid) (PAA), served as surface-grafting polymers of ultrasmall PbO nanoparticles. The synthesized polymer-grafted ultrasmall PbO nanoparticles were colloidally stable (i.e., no precipitation), nearly monodispersed in particle diameters with average particle diameters of 2.0, 1.9 and 2.0 nm for the PAA-, PAAMA-, and PMVEMA-grafted ultrasmall PbO nanoparticles, respectively, exhibiting very-low cellular cytotoxicity. Based on the identical atomic concentration and the identical number density, the X-ray attenuation efficiencies of the polymer-grafted ultrasmall PbO nanoparticles were ∼3 and ∼140 times greater, respectively, compared with those of a commercially available contrast agent Ultravist. Their potential as X-ray contrast agents was proved in vivo by observing contrast enhancements in organs after intravenous tail and intraperitoneal injections in mice. X-ray computed tomography (CT) contrast agents offer extremely valuable tools and techniques in diagnostics via contrast enhancements. Heavy metal-based nanoparticles (NPs) can provide high contrast in CT images due to the high density of heavy metal atoms with high X-ray attenuation coefficients that exceed that of iodine (I), which is currently used in hydrophilic organic CT contrast agents. Nontoxicity and colloidal stability are vital characteristics in designing heavy metal-based NPs as CT contrast agents. In addition, a small particle size is desirable for in vivo renal excretion. In vitro phantom imaging studies have been performed to obtain X-ray attenuation efficiency, which is a critical parameter for CT contrast agents, and the imaging performance of CT contrast agents has been demonstrated via in vivo experiments. In this review, we focus on the in vitro and in vivo studies of various heavy metal-based NPs in pure metallic or chemical forms, including Au, Pt, Pd, Ag, Ce, Gd, Dy, Ho, Yb, Ta, W, and Bi, and provide an outlook on their use as high-performance CT contrast agents. Herein, biotin (Bio)‐conjugated poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)‐grafted ultrasmall gadolinium oxide nanoparticles (Bio‐PAA‐Gd2O3 NPs) were synthesized for enhanced tumor imaging using Bio as a tumor‐targeting ligand. The average particle diameter of Gd2O3 NPs was 2.1 nm. The Bio‐PAA‐Gd2O3 NPs exhibited excellent colloidal stability (i. e., no precipitation) and a high longitudinal water proton spin relaxivity (r1) of 23.8 s−1 mM−1 (r2/r1=1.6 and r2=transverse water proton spin relaxivity), which was ∼6 times higher than those of commercial Gd‐chelated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. Cytotoxicity tests using two cell lines showed that the Bio‐PAA‐Gd2O3 NPs were almost non‐toxic up to the measured concentration of 500 μM Gd. The enhanced tumor imaging of the Bio‐PAA‐Gd2O3 NPs was demonstrated through their higher positive contrasts and longer contrast retention at the tumor after intravenous injection in T1 MR images, compared with those of the control PAA‐Gd2O3 NPs. Hemagglutination assay has been used for blood typing and detecting viruses, thus applicable for the diagnosis of infectious diseases, including COVID-19. Therefore, the development of microfluidic devices for fast detection of hemagglutination is on-demand for point-of-care diagnosis. Here, we present a way to detect hemagglutination in 3D microfluidic devices via optical absorbance (optical density, OD) characterization. 3D printing is a powerful way to build microfluidic structures for diagnostic devices. However, mixing liquid in microfluidic chips is difficult due to laminar flow, which hampers practical applications such as antigen-antibody mixing. To overcome the issue, we fabricated 3D microfluidic chips with embedded microchannel and microwell structures to induce hemagglutination between red blood cells (RBCs) and antibodies. We named it a 3D microtrap chip. We also established an automated measurement system which is an integral part of diagnostic devices. To do this, we developed a novel way to identify RBC agglutination and non-agglutination via the OD difference. By adapting a 3D-printed aperture to the microtrap chip, we obtained a pure absorbance signal from the microchannels by eliminating the background brightness of the microtrap chip. In recent decades, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have attracted considerable research interest as versatile substances for various biomedical applications, particularly as contrast agents in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Depending on their composition and particle size, most MNPs are either paramagnetic or superparamagnetic. The unique, advanced magnetic properties of MNPs, such as appreciable paramagnetic or strong superparamagnetic moments at room temperature, along with their large surface area, easy surface functionalization, and the ability to offer stronger contrast enhancements in MRI, make them superior to molecular MRI contrast agents. As a result, MNPs are promising candidates for various diagnostic and therapeutic applications. They can function as either positive (T1) or negative (T2) MRI contrast agents, producing brighter or darker MR images, respectively. In addition, they can function as dual-modal T1 and T2 MRI contrast agents, producing either brighter or darker MR images, depending on the operational mode. It is essential that the MNPs are grafted with hydrophilic and biocompatible ligands to maintain their nontoxicity and colloidal stability in aqueous media. The colloidal stability of MNPs is critical in order to achieve a high-performance MRI function. Most of the MNP-based MRI contrast agents reported in the literature are still in the developmental stage. With continuous progress being made in the detailed scientific research on them, their use in clinical settings may be realized in the future. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is increasingly used to diagnose focal and diffuse liver disorders. Despite their enhanced efficacy, liver-targeted gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) raise safety concerns owing to the release of toxic Gd3+ ions. A π-conjugated macrocyclic chelate, Mn-NOTA-NP, was designed and synthesized as a non-gadolinium alternative for liver-specific MRI. Mn-NOTA-NP exhibits an r1 relaxivity of 3.57 mM−1 s−1 in water and 9.01 mM−1 s−1 in saline containing human serum albumin at 3 T, which is significantly greater than the clinically utilized Mn2+-based hepatobiliary drug, Mn-DPDP (1.50 mM−1 s−1), and comparable with that of GBCAs. Furthermore, the in vivo biodistribution and MRI enhancement patterns of Mn-NOTA-NP were similar to those of the Gd3+-based hepatobiliary agent, Gd-DTPA-EOB. Additionally, a 0.05 mmol/kg dose of Mn-NOTA-NP facilitated high-sensitivity tumor detection with tumor signal enhancement in a liver tumor model. Ligand-docking simulations further indicated that Mn-NOTA-NP differed from other hepatobiliary agents in their interactions with several transporter systems. Ultrasmall platinum nanoparticles (Pt-NPs) grafted with three types of hydrophilic and biocompatible polymers, i.e., poly(acrylic acid), poly(acrylic acid-co-maleic acid), and poly(methyl vinyl ether-alt-maleic acid) were synthesized using a one-pot polyol method. Their physicochemical and X-ray attenuation properties were characterized. All polymer-coated Pt-NPs had an average particle diameter (davg) of 2.0 nm. Polymers grafted onto Pt-NP surfaces exhibited excellent colloidal stability (i.e., no precipitation after synthesis for >1.5 years) and low cellular toxicity. The X-ray attenuation power of the polymer-coated Pt-NPs in aqueous media was stronger than that of the commercial iodine contrast agent Ultravist at the same atomic concentration and considerably stronger at the same number density, confirming their potential as computed tomography contrast agents. A tandem photoelectrochemical (PEC) water-splitting device for solar hydrogen production consists of two light absorbers with different bandgaps. Silicon photoelectrodes have been widely investigated as the low bandgap bottom cells of tandem devices because of their bandgap (1.12 eV). Herein, we apply a tunnel oxide passivated contact (TOPCon) on the front and back sides of a Si wafer to prepare a TOPCon Si PEC device. Because TOPCon has a SiO2 tunnel oxide layer providing superior surface passivation and working as a diffusion-blocking layer, TOPCon Si photoelectrodes exhibit superior photovoltage and thermal stability. Both photocathode and photoanode are tested over a broad pH range (0–14) and demonstrate high photovoltages of 640–650 mV under 1 sun illumination and excellent thermal stability by enduring a high processing temperature of up to 600 °C for 1 h in air. These advantages of TOPCon Si would provide high efficiency and great design flexibility for monolithic tandem cells. As a preliminary demonstration of the tandem integration, we test two wired tandem PEC devices based on earth-abundant materials, which are a BiVO4 photoanode–TOPCon Si photocathode and halide perovskite photocathode–TOPCon Si photoanode. In this study, we designed, synthesized, and evaluated gadolinium compounds conjugated with flavonoids as potential theranostic agents for the treatment of inflammation. These novel theranostic agents combine a molecular imaging agent and one of three flavonoids (galangin, chrysin, and 7-hydroxyflavone) as anti-inflammatory drugs as a single integrated platform. Using these agents, MR imaging showed contrast enhancement (>10 in CNR) at inflamed sites in an animal inflammation model, and subsequent MR imaging used to monitor the therapeutic efficacy of these integrated agents revealed changes in inflamed regions. The anti-inflammatory effects of these agents were demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo. Furthermore, the antioxidant efficacy of the agents was evaluated by measuring their reactive oxygen species scavenging properties. For example, Gd-galangin at 30 μM showed a three-fold higher ROS scavenging of DPPH. Taken together, our findings provide convincing evidence to indicate that flavonoid-conjugated gadolinium compounds can be used as potentially efficient theranostic agents for the treatment of inflammation. Hydrophilic and biocompatible PAA-coated ultrasmall Gd2O3 nanoparticles (davg = 1.7 nm) were synthesized and conjugated with tumor-targeting ligands, i.e., cyclic arginylglycylaspartic acid (cRGD) and/or folic acid (FA). FA-PAA-Gd2O3 and cRGD/FA-PAA-Gd2O3 nanoparticles were successfully applied in U87MG tumor-bearing mice for tumor imaging using T1 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). cRGD/FA-PAA-Gd2O3 nanoparticles with multiple tumor-targeting ligands exhibited higher contrasts at the tumor site than FA-PAA-Gd2O3 nanoparticles with mono tumor-targeting ligands. In addition, the cRGD/FA-PAA-Gd2O3 nanoparticles exhibited higher contrasts in all organs, especially the aorta, compared with those of the FA-PAA-Gd2O3 nanoparticles, because of the blood cell hitchhiking effect of cRGD in the cRGD/FA-PAA-Gd2O3 nanoparticles, which prolonged their circulation in the blood. Here, we describe the synthesis, characterization, and in vitro biological evaluation of a series of transition metal complexes containing benzothiazole aniline (BTA). We employed BTA, which is known for its selective anticancer activity, and a salen-type Schiff-based ligand to coordinate several transition metals to achieve selective and synergistic cytotoxicity. The compounds obtained were characterized by NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The compounds L, MnL, FeL, CoL, and ZnL showed promising in vitro cytotoxicity against cancer cells, and they had a lower IC50 than that of the clinically used cisplatin. In particular, MnL had synergistic cytotoxicity against liver, breast, and colon cancer cells. Moreover, MnL, CoL, and CuL promoted the production of reactive oxygen species in HepG2 tumor cell lines. The lead compound of this series, MnL, remained stable in physiological settings, and docking results showed that it interacted rationally with the minor groove of DNA. Water proton spin relaxivities, colloidal stability, and biocompatibility of nanoparticle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents depend on surface-coating ligands. In this study, hydrophilic and biocompatible polyethylenimines (PEIs) of different sizes (Mn = 1200 and 60,000 amu) were used as surface-coating ligands for ultrasmall holmium oxide (Ho2O3) nanoparticles. The synthesized PEI1200- and PEI60000-coated ultrasmall Ho2O3 nanoparticles, with an average particle diameter of 2.05 and 1.90 nm, respectively, demonstrated low cellular cytotoxicities, good colloidal stability, and appreciable transverse water proton spin relaxivities (r2) of 13.1 and 9.9 s−1mM−1, respectively, in a 3.0 T MR field with negligible longitudinal water proton spin relaxivities (r1) (i.e., 0.1 s−1mM−1) for both samples. Consequently, for both samples, the dose-dependent contrast changes in the longitudinal (R1) and transverse (R2) relaxation rate map images were negligible and appreciable, respectively, indicating their potential as efficient transverse T2 MRI contrast agents in vitro. The use of cancer-derived exosomes has been studied in several cancer types, but the cancer-targeting efficacy of glioma-derived exosomes has not been investigated in depth for malignant glioblastoma (GBM) cells. In this study, exosomes were derived from U87MG human glioblastoma cells, and selumetinib, a new anticancer drug, was loaded into the exosomes. We observed the tropism of GBM-derived exosomes in vitro and in vivo. We found that the tropism of GBM-derived exosomes is in contrast to the behavior of non-exosome-enveloped drugs and non-GBM-specific exosomes in vitro and in vivo in an animal GBM model. We found that the tropism exhibited by GBM-derived exosomes can be utilized to shuttle selumetinib, with no specific targeting moiety, to GBM tumor sites. Therefore, our findings indicated that GBM-derived exosomes loaded with selumetinib had a specific antitumor effect on U87MG cells and were non-toxic to normal brain cells. Xenopus laevis is highly suitable as a toxicology animal model owing to its advantages in embryogenesis research. For toxicological studies, a large number of embryos must be handled simultaneously because they very rapidly develop into the target stages within a short period of time. To efficiently handle the embryos, a convenient embryo housing device is essential for fast and reliable assessment and statistical evaluation of malformation caused by toxicants. Here, we suggest 3D fabrication of single-egg trapping devices in which Xenopus eggs are fertilized in vitro, and the embryos are cultured. We used manual pipetting to insert the Xenopus eggs inside the trapping sites of the chip. By introducing a liquid circulating system, we connected a sperm-mixed solution with the chip to induce in vitro fertilization of the eggs. After the eggs were fertilized, we observed embryo development involving the formation of egg cleavage, blastula, gastrula, and tadpole. After the tadpoles grew inside the chip, we saved their lives by enabling their escape from the chip through reverse flow of the culture medium. Sb2Se3 possesses a quasi‐1D (Q1D) structure, which creates an anisotropic charge transporting behavior in which the carrier transport is very efficient along the Q1D direction, which is beneficial for solar cells as long as the absorber is properly aligned along the preferred orientation. However, Sb2Se3 is prone to form donor‐like defects, such as VSe, that are detrimental to the performance. Therefore, both growth of Sb2Se3 along the preferred orientations and the suppression of the formation of VSe are crucial in achieving Sb2Se3 solar cells with a high efficiency. Herein, the importance of fine control of the extra supply of Se during the deposition of Sb2Se3 in controlling crystallographic orientations and the population of VSe in the Sb2Se3 films is described. This control determines the performance of the resulting solar cells in a superstrate configuration with a CdS buffer. Incorporation of Se during the growth resulted in a larger open‐circuit voltage due to the passivation of VSe. However, an excess supply of Se disrupts the favorable orientation by selenizing the top region of the CdS, and therefore degraded the short‐circuit current. Through the optimization of the extra supply of Se vapor, the power conversion efficiency is improved from 3.7% to 5.2%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Platinum hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts in the form of nanocubes (NCs) were synthesized at 50 °C by aqueous‐based colloidal synthesis and were applied to electrochemical (EC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) systems by a fast and simple drop‐casting method. A remarkable Pt mass activity of 1.77 A mg−1 at −100 mV was achieved in EC systems (fluorine‐doped tin oxide/Pt NC cathode) with neutral electrolyte while maintaining low overpotential and Tafel slope. In the Cu(In,Ga)(S,Se)2 (CIGS)‐based PEC system, a carefully chosen amount of Pt NC loading to achieve a compromise between the catalytic activity (more Pt NCs) and better light transmittance (fewer Pt NCs) led to a maximum onset potential of 0.678 V against the reference hydrogen electrode. The photoelectrodes with Pt NCs also exhibited good long‐term operational stability over 9.5 h with negligible degradation of the photocurrent. This study presents an effective strategy to greatly reduce the use of expensive Pt without compromising the catalytic performance because the drop‐casting of Pt NC solutions to form electrocatalysts is expected to waste less raw material than vacuum deposition. Abstract: The photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of a Cu(In,Ga)Se2 (CIGS) photocathode covered with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) as a catalyst binder for solar‐driven hydrogen evolution are reported. Chemically reduced rGO with various concentrations is deposited as an adhesive interlayer between CIGS/CdS and Pt. PEC characteristics of the CIGS/CdS/rGO/Pt are improved compared to the photocathode without rGO due to enhancement of charge transfer via efficient lateral distribution of photogenerated electrons by conductive rGO to the Pt. More importantly, the introduction of rGO to the CIGS photocathode significantly enhances the PEC stability; in the absence of rGO, a rapid loss of PEC stability is observed in 2.5 h, while the optimal rGO increases the PEC stability of the CIGS photocathode for more than 7 h. Chemical and structural characterizations show that the loss of the Pt catalyst is one of the main reasons for the lack of long‐term PEC stability; the introduction of rGO, which acts as a binder to the Pt catalysts by providing anchoring sites in the rGO, results in complete conservation of the Pt and hence much enhanced stability. We are reporting electrical properties of Si nanowire field-effect transistors with a Schottky barrier formed at the electrodes. The channel widths are varied using a top-down process of electron-beam patterning followed by surface oxidation from a few micrometers to the sub-10-nm level. The field-effect mobility increases gradually with decreasing channel width to 20 nm. On the other hand, the mobility decreases drastically when the channel width is smaller than 20 nm. The mobility enhancement is attributed to the stress build up during the oxidation of nanowire, while the drastic mobility degradation observed below a 20-nm linewidth is attributed to the surface scattering of electrons caused by the high surface/volume ratio of nanowire. The manipulation of radiative properties of light emitters coupledwith surface plasmons is important for engineering new nanoscale optoelectronic devices, including lasers, detectorsand single photon emitters. However, so far the radiative rates of excited states in semiconductors and molecular systems have been enhanced only moderately, typically by a factor of 10-50, producing emission mostly from thermalizedexcitons. Here, we show the generation of dominant hot-exciton emission, that is, luminescence from non-thermalized excitons that are enhanced by the highly concentrated electromagnetic fields supported by the resonant whispering-gallery plasmonic nanocavities of CdS-SiO2-Ag core-shell nanowire devices. By tuning the plasmonic cavity size to match the whispering-gallery resonances, an almost complete transition from thermalized exciton to hot-exciton emission can be achieved, which reflects exceptionally high radiative rate enhancement of >103 and sub-picosecond lifetimes. Core-shell plasmonic nanowires are an ideal test bed for studying and controlling strong plasmon-exciton interaction at the nanoscale and opens new avenues for applications in ultrafast nanophotonic devices. Owing to a higher demand for glucosamine (GlcN) in metabolic processes in tumor cells than in normal cells (i.e., GlcN effects), tumor imaging in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can be highly improved using GlcN-conjugated MRI contrast agents. Here, GlcN was conjugated with polyacrylic acid (PAA)-coated ultrasmall gadolinium oxide nanoparticles (UGONs) (davg = 1.76 nm). Higher positive (brighter or T1) contrast enhancements at various organs including tumor site were observed in human brain glioma (U87MG) tumor-bearing mice after the intravenous injection of GlcN-PAA-UGONs into their tail veins, compared with those obtained with PAA-UGONs as control, which were rapidly excreted through the bladder. Importantly, the contrast enhancements of the GlcN-PAA-UGONs with respect to those of the PAA-UGONs were the highest in the tumor site owing to GlcN effects. This article considers the problem of North Korea's collective farms from a micro-institutional perspective. It begins with an analysis of the collective farming system introduced in 1958, the changes in 1966 that allowed for sub-work teams, and the further reform of 1996 that permitted a new work squad system. The normalization of North Korea's agriculture is not just a technological problem; rather, it requires reform of the collective farms and their incentives: the removal of the inefficient elements in the shorter term and the promotion of family farming in the medium to longer term. Recent progress in functionalized lanthanide oxide (Ln2O3) nanoparticles for tumor targeting, medical imaging, and therapy is reviewed. Among the medical imaging techniques, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important noninvasive imaging tool for tumor diagnosis due to its high spatial resolution and excellent imaging contrast, especially when contrast agents are used. However, commercially available low-molecular-weight MRI contrast agents exhibit several shortcomings, such as nonspecificity for the tissue of interest and rapid excretion in vivo. Recently, nanoparticle-based MRI contrast agents have become a hot research topic in biomedical imaging due to their high performance, easy surface functionalization, and low toxicity. Among them, functionalized Ln2O3 nanoparticles are applicable as MRI contrast agents for tumor-targeting and nontumor-targeting imaging and image-guided tumor therapy. Primarily, Gd2O3 nanoparticles have been intensively investigated as tumor-targeting T1 MRI contrast agents. T2 MRI is also possible due to the appreciable paramagnetic moments of Ln2O3 nanoparticles (Ln = Dy, Ho, and Tb) at room temperature arising from the nonzero orbital motion of 4f electrons. In addition, Ln2O3 nanoparticles are eligible as X-ray computed tomography contrast agents because of their high X-ray attenuation power. Celecoxib is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that selectively inhibits cyclooxygenase-2 and is prescribed for severe pain and inflammation. The excellent therapeutic effects of celecoxib mean that it is frequently used clinically, including for women of child-bearing age. However, the prenatal effects of this compound have not been studied extensively in vertebrates. The present study examined the developmental toxicity of celecoxib using a frog embryo teratogenic assay- Xenopus (FETAX). In addition, we examined its effects on cell migration using co-cultures of human umbilical vein endothelial cells and 10T1/2 cells. These studies revealed that celecoxib induced concentration-dependent mortality and various malformations of the Xenopus internal organs, including gut miscoiling, haemorrhage, and oedema. Celecoxib also downregulated the expression of vascular wall markers (Msr and alpha smooth muscle actin) and other organ-specific markers (Nkx2.5, Cyl104 and IFABP). In vitro co-culture studies revealed that celecoxib inhibited pericyte migration and differentiation into vascular smooth muscle cells. In conclusion, celecoxib was both toxic and teratogenic in Xenopus embryos, where it produced serious heart and vessel malformation by inhibiting vascular wall maturation and vascular network formation. Diagnosis of pathogen infection based on loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is suitable for the point-of-care test due to fast process time, cost-effectiveness, and high specificity for target deoxyribonucleic acids (DNAs). In this diagnosis method, the presence of a target DNA in a tested solution can be determined by the color change during the LAMP reaction and the color change is typically monitored by naked-eye observation. However, although the evaluation by naked-eye is simple and fast, human subjectivity can significantly affect the diagnosis result because of an inconsistent positive threshold for diagnosis. In this study, we developed a colorimetric sensor platform that can accurately monitor the color change of LAMP solutions in 8-tube strips for diagnosing pathogen infection. To determine color change from a shift of light spectrum, this sensor contains eight pairs of red/green/blue (RGB) light-emitting diodes and RGB photodetectors to monitor a color change in a broad visible wavelength region. We also developed an evaluation algorithm based on a correlated-variation nulling technique to maximize the distance between negative and positive output distribution bands and calibrate the inherent tube-to-tube variation of color changes. The accuracy of the developed method was evaluated by testing 233 clinical samples for diagnosing Streptococcus agalactiae (also known as group B Streptococcus) bacterial infection and comparing the results with that by agarose gel electrophoresis. The accuracy was as high as 99.1%. Fluorescent nanoparticles used in biomedical applications should be stable in their colloidal form in aqueous media and possess a high quantum yield (QY). We report ultrasmall Ln 2 O 3 (Ln = Eu, Tb, or Dy) nanoparticle colloids with high QYs in aqueous media. The nanoparticles are grafted with hydrophilic and biocompatible poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) to ensure colloidal stability and biocompatibility and with organic photosensitizer 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (PDA) for achieving a high QY. The PAA/PDA-Ln 2 O 3 nanoparticle colloids were nearly monodispersed and ultrasmall (particle diameter: ∼2 nm). They exhibited excellent colloidal stability with no precipitation after synthesis (>1.5 years) in aqueous media, very low cellular toxicity, and very high absolute QYs of 87.6, 73.6, and 2.8% for Ln = Eu, Tb, and Dy, respectively. These QYs are the highest reported so far for lanthanides in aqueous media. Therefore, the results suggest their high potential as sensitive optical or imaging probes in biomedical applications.

Aims: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are membrane-derived vesicles that mediate intercellular communications. Neutrophils produce different subtypes of EVs during inflammatory responses. Neutrophil-derived trails (NDTRs) are generated by neutrophils migrating toward inflammatory foci, whereas neutrophil-derived microvesicles (NDMVs) are thought to be generated by neutrophils that have arrived at the inflammatory foci. However, the physical and functional characteristics of neutrophil-derived EVs are incompletely understood. In this study, we aimed to investigate the differences between NDTRs and NDMVs. Methods: The generation of neutrophil-derived EVs were visualized by live-cell fluorescence images and the physical characteristics were further analyzed using nanotracking analysis assay, scanning electron microscopic analysis, and marker expressions. Functional characteristics of neutrophil-derived EVs were analyzed using assays for bactericidal activity, monocyte chemotaxis, phenotype polarization of macrophages, and miRNA sequencing. Finally, the effects of neutrophil-derived EVs on the acute and chronic inflammation were examined in vivo . Results: Both EVs share similar characteristics including stimulators, surface marker expression, bactericidal activity, and chemoattractive effect on monocytes via MCP-1. However, the integrin-mediated physical interaction was required for generation of NDTRs whereas NDMV generation was dependent on PI3K pathway. Interestingly, NDTRs contained proinflammatory miRNAs such as miR-1260, miR-1285, miR-4454, and miR-7975, while NDMVs contained anti-inflammatory miRNAs such as miR-126, miR-150, and miR-451a. Although both EVs were easily uptaken by monocytes, NDTRs enhanced proinflammatory macrophage polarization whereas NDMVs induced anti-inflammatory macrophage polarization. Moreover, NDTRs showed protective effects against lethality in a murine sepsis model and pathological changes in a murine chronic colitis model.
