Abstract

Abstract Using data from the NEMO-3 experiment, we have measured the two-neutrino double beta decay ($$2\nu \beta \beta $$ 2νββ ) half-life of $$^{82}$$ 82 Se as $$T_{\smash {1/2}}^{2\nu } \!=\! \left[ 9.39 \pm 0.17\left( \text{ stat }\right) \pm 0.58\left( \text{ syst }\right) \right] \times 10^{19}$$ T1/22ν=9.39±0.17stat±0.58syst×1019 y under the single-state dominance hypothesis for this nuclear transition. The corresponding nuclear matrix element is $$\left| M^{2\nu }\right| = 0.0498 \pm 0.0016$$ M2ν=0.0498±0.0016 . In addition, a search for neutrinoless double beta decay ($$0\nu \beta \beta $$ 0νββ ) using 0.93 kg of $$^{82}$$ 82 Se observed for a total of 5.25 y has been conducted and no evidence for a signal has been found. The resulting half-life limit of $$T_{1/2}^{0\nu } > 2.5 \times 10^{23} \,\text{ y } \,(90\%\,\text{ C.L. })$$ T1/20ν>2.5×1023y(90%C.L.) for the light neutrino exchange mechanism leads to a constraint on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of $$\langle m_{\nu } \rangle < \left( 1.2{-}3.0\right) \,\text{ eV }$$ ⟨mν⟩

Abstract

New limits on $\beta^+$EC and ECEC processes in $^{74}$Se have been obtained using a 600 cm$^3$ HPGe detector and an external source consisting of 1600 g of a natural selenium powder. For different $\beta^+$EC and ECEC transitions (to the ground and excited states) obtained limits are on the level $\sim (0.2-4.8)\times10^{19}$ yr at 90\% C.L. In particular, for the potentially resonant transition into the 1204.2 keV excited state of $^{74}$Ge a lower half-life limit of $1.1\times10^{19}$ yr at 90\% C.L. has been obtained. Abstract

International audience; Double beta decay (β$^{+}$EC, EC/EC) of $^{74}$Se was investigated at the Modane underground laboratory (LSM, France; 4800 m of water equivalent) using the OBELIX ultralow-background HPGe detector with a sensitive volume of 600 cm$^{3}$ and a sample of natural selenium with a mass of 1.6 kg containing ~0.89% (~14.24 g) of $^{74}$Se. The new experimental limits for β$^{+}$EC and EC/EC decays of $^{74}$Se to ground 0$^{+}$ and excited $2_{1}^{ + },$ 596 keV, and $2_{2}^{ + },$ 1204 keV states of $^{74}$Ge, were obtained from experimental data accumulated over 135 days.

International audience; Investigation of double beta decay processes (β+EC, EC/EC) of 74Se was performed at the Modane underground laboratory (LSM, France, 4800 m w.e.) using ultra low-background HPGe detector Obelix with sensitive volume of 600 cm3 and a sample of natural selenium with a mass of 1.6 kg, containing ∼0.89% (∼14.24 g) of 74Se. New experimental limits (at 90 % CL) on double beta decay transitions of 74Se to the ground and exited states of 74Ge were obtained from the preliminary calculation of experimental data accumulated in 135 days.

Abstract

International audience; The main limitation in the high-sensitive HPGe gamma-ray spectrometry has been the detector background, even for detectors placed deep underground. Environmental radionuclides such as 40K and decay products in the 238U and 232Th chains have been identified as the most important radioactive contaminants of construction parts of HPGe gamma-ray spectrometers. Monte Carlo simulations have shown that the massive inner and outer lead shields have been the main contributors to the HPGe-detector background, followed by aluminum cryostat, copper cold finger, detector holder and the lead ring with FET. The Monte Carlo simulated cosmic-ray background gamma-ray spectrum has been by about three orders of magnitude lower than the experimental spectrum measured in the Modane underground laboratory (4800 m w.e.), underlying the importance of using radiopure materials for the construction of ultra-low-level HPGe gamma-ray spectrometers.

Abstract

Double beta decay (β + EC, EC/EC) of 58Ni is investigated at France’s Modane Underground Laboratory (4800 m water equivalent) using the OBELIX ultralow-background HPGe detector with a sensitive volume of 600 cm3 and a natural nickel sample of ~68% 58Ni with a mass of ~21.7 kg. After preliminary analysis of the experimental data accumulated over ~144 days, new experimental limits are obtained for the 2νβ+EC decay of 58Ni to the 0+ ground state and the 2 1 + , 811 keV excited state of 58Fe, and for the 2νEC/EC decay of 58Ni to the 2 1 + , 811 keV and 2 2 + , 1675 keV excited states of 58Fe. The limits are T1/2(β+EC,0→0+) > 1.7 × 1022 yr, T1/2(β+EC,0→2 1 + ) > 2.3 × 1022 yr, T1/2(EC/EC,0→2 1 + ) > 3.3 × 1022 yr, and T1/2(EC/EC,0→2 2 + ) > 3.4 × 1022 yr. Experimental limit T1/2(0νEC/EC–res, 1918 keV > 4.1 × 1022 yr is obtained for resonant neutrinoless radiative EC/EC decay with an energy of 1918.3 keV. All limits are at 90% CL.

Abstract

Investigation of double beta decay processes (β+EC, EC/EC) of 58Ni was performed at the Modane underground laboratory (LSM, France, 4800 m w.e.). A sample of natural nickel, containing ∼68% of 58Ni and a mass of ∼21.7 kg, was measured using ultra low-background HPGe detector Obelix (sensitive volume of 600 cm3) during ∼143.8 days. New experimental limits on 2νβ+EC decay of 58Ni to the ground 0+ and (math), 811 keV excited state of 58Fe, and 2νEC/EC decay of 58Ni to (math), 811 keV and (maht), 1 675 keV excited states of 58Fe were obtained in this measurement. There are -T1/2(β+EC, 0+ → 0+) > 1.7 × 1022 y; (math), (math), (math). For resonant neutrino-less radiative EC/EC decay with energy of 1 918.3 keV a new experimental limit of T1/2 (0νEC/EC – res, 1918KeV) > 4.1 ×1022 y was also obtained. All limits are at 90 % CL.

Abstract

International audience; A new experimental run of searching for double beta decay of (106)Cd was performed at the Modane underground laboratory (LSM, France, 4800 m w.e.) using the TGV-2 spectrometer, consisting of 32 planar type HPGe detectors with a total sensitive volume of ~400 cm(3). 16 foils of (106)Cd with an enrichment of 99.57% and a total mass of ~ 23.2 g were inserted between the entrance windows of face-to-face detectors. The limit on 2vEC/EC decay of (106)Cd - T(1/2) > 3.7 × 10(20) y at 90% C.F was obtained from the preliminary calculation of experimental data accumulated for 8198 h of measurement. The limits on the resonance OvEC/EC decay of (106)Cd were obtained from the measurement of ~23.2 g of (106)Cd with the low-background HPGe spectrometer Obelix lasted 395 h -T(1/2) (KF, 2741 keV) > 0.9 × 10(20) y and T(1/2) (KK, 2718 keV) > 1.4 × 10(20) y at 90% C.L.

International audience; A new experiment devoted to searches for double electron capture in Cd-106 decay is being performed at the Modane underground laboratory (4800 mwe) with the 32-detector TGV-2 spectrometer. The limit T (1/2)(2 nu EC/EC) > 2.0x10(20) yr at a 90%confidence level (C.L.) was obtained from a preliminary analysis of data obtained over 2250 h of measurements with about 23.2 g sample enriched in the isotope Cd-106 to 99.57%. The limits T (1/2)(KL, 2741 keV) > 0.9 x 10(20) yr and T (1/2)(KK, 2718 keV) a parts per thousand << 1.4 x 10(20) yr at a 90% C.L. on the neutrinoless decay of Cd-106 were obtained from measurements performed with the Obelix low-background spectrometer from high-purity germanium (HPGe spectrometer) for a sample of mass about 23.2 g enriched in the isotope Cd-106.

Abstract

Investigation of double electron capture in 106Cd was performed at the Modane underground laboratory (4800 m.w.e.) using the multi-detector spectrometer TGV-2. In Phase I of the experiment, ∼10 g of 106Cd with an enrichment of 75% was measured during 8687 hours. In Phase II, the TGV-2 background was significantly suppressed in comparison with Phase I and the 106Cd mass was increased to ∼13.6 g. New half-life limits (at 90% CL) were obtained for 2νEC/EC decay of 106Cd to the ground state of Pd 106 – T 1 / 2 > 3.0 × 10 20 y (Phase I) and T 1 / 2 > 3.6 × 10 20 y (Phase II, 9000 hours), and for 0νEC/EC decay of 106Cd to the 2741 keV excited state of Pd 106 – T 1 / 2 > 1.1 × 10 20 y (Phase II).

International audience; Currently, the TGV collaboration is investigating the two-neutrino double electron capture (2 nu EC/EC) of (106)Cd at the Modane underground laboratory. The study is performed with low-background multi-HPGe detector TGV II, which has been constructed for measurements of the rare processes. The half-life limits of T(1/2) > 2.6 x 10(20) years (for Phase I, 8687 hours) and T(1/2) > 3.6 x 10(20) years (for Phase II, 9003 hours) were obtained for the ground state to ground state 2 nu EC/EC of (106)Cd. The results already allow to rule out some of the previous nuclear structure calculations.

International audience; The TGV II (Telescope Germanium Vertical) facility is a low background spectrometer operated in Modane Underground Laboratory. It aims at the study of double electron capture of 106Cd. The spectrometer is composed of 32 HPGe planar detectors interleaved with thin‐foil samples made of Cd‐106 enriched to 75% (total mass about 10 g). In 2006, the main run of phase I (1 year duration) was terminated yielding a new limit on half‐life for two‐neutrino double electron capture (g.s.→g.s.) in 106Cd as 2.0×1020 years. This limit is significantly higher (by almost three orders of magnitude) than those already published. © 2007 American Institute of Physics

Abstract

Present status of the experiment TGV II which is devoted to the measurement of double-beta decay of 106Cd is given. The low background spectrometer TGV II is installed in the Modane Underground Laboratory and has been running from February 2005 with approx 10 grams of 106Cd enriched at 75%. After an analysis of 3736 hours of experimental data the new improved half-life limit for 2νEC/EC decay of 106Cd (0 g.s. + → 0 g.s. + ) is given as T 1 2/2 > 4.8 × 1019 years (90% CL). The search for 2νEC/EC decay of 106Cd to the excited states of 106Pd allows to determine the limits of the half-lives T 1 2/2 (0 g.s. + → 2 1 + ) > 3.9 × 1019 years (90% CL) and T 1 2/2 (0 g.s. + → 0 1 + ) > 5.8 × 1019 years (90% CL).

Abstract

This Letter describes a collaborative TGV (Telescope Germanium Vertical) study of the double beta decay of 48Ca with a low-background and high sensitivity Ge multi-detector spectrometer. The results of T1/22νββ=(4.2+3.3−1.3)×1019 years and T1/20νββ>1.5×1021 years (90% CL) for double beta decay of 48Ca were found after processing experimental data obtained after 8700 hours of measuring time, using approximately 1 gramme of 48Ca. The features of a TGV-2 experiment are also presented.

Abstract

A high sensitivity double beta spectrometer TGV (Telescope Germanium Vertical) has been developed. It is based on 16 HPGe detectors of volume 1200 × 6 mm3 each in the same cryostat. The TGV spectrometer was proposed for the study of ultrarare nuclear processes (e.g. 2νββ, 0νββ, 2νEC/EC). Details of the TGV spectrometer construction are described, the principles of background suppression, the results of Monte Carlo simulations and the results of test background measurements (in Dubna and Modane underground laboratory) are provided.
