The Nuussuaq Basin is the only exposed Cretaceous–Paleocene sedimentary basin in West Greenland and is one of a complex of linked rift basins stretching from the Labrador Sea to northern Baffin Bay. These basins developed along West Greenland as a result of the opening of the Labrador Sea in Late Mesozoic to Early Cenozoic times. The Nuussuaq Basin is exposed in West Greenland between 69°N and 72°N on Disko, Nuussuaq, Upernivik Ø, Qeqertarsuaq, Itsaku and Svartenhuk Halvø and has also been recorded in a number of shallow and deep wells in the region. The sediments are assigned to the more than 6 km thick Nuussuaq Group (new) which underlies the Palaeogene plateau basalts of the West Greenland Basalt Group. The sediment thickness is best estimated from seismic data; in the western part of the area, seismic and magnetic data suggest that the succession is at least 6 km and possibly as much as 10 km thick. The exposed Albian–Paleocene part of the succession testifies to two main episodes of regional rifting and basin development: an EarlyCretaceous and a Late Cretaceous – Early Paleocene episode prior to the start of sea-floor spreading in mid-Paleocene time. This exposed section includes fan delta, fluviodeltaic, shelfal and deepmarine deposits. The Nuussuaq Group is divided into ten formations, most of which have previously been only briefly described, with the exception of their macrofossil content. In ascending stratigraphic order, the formations are: the Kome Formation, the Slibestensfjeldet Formation (new), the Upernivik Næs Formation, the Atane Formation (including four new members – the Skansen, Ravn Kløft, Kingittoq and Qilakitsoq Members – and one new bed, the Itivnera Bed), the Itilli Formation (new, including four new members: the Anariartorfik, Umiivik, Kussinerujuk and Aaffarsuaq Members), the Kangilia Formation (including the revised Annertuneq Conglomerate Member andthe new Oyster–Ammonite Conglomerate Bed), the Quikavsak Formation (new, including three new members: the Tupaasat, Nuuk Qiterleq and Paatuutkløften Members), the Agatdal Formation, the Eqalulik Formation (new, including the Abraham Member), and the Atanikerluk Formation (new, including five members: the Naujât, Akunneq (new), Pingu (new), Umiussat and Assoq (new) Members).

The organic matter content of marine sediments is often used to infer past changes in ocean conditions. However, the organic carbon pool preserved in coastal sediments is a complex mixture derived from different sources and may not reflect in situ processes. In this study, we combine taxonomic identification of reworked palynomorphs with pyrolysis organic geochemistry and reflected‐light organic petrographic microscopy to investigate the provenance, composition and preservation of organic matter in a marine sediment core retrieved from the NE Greenland shelf. Our study reveals continuous yet variable input of land‐derived organic carbon to the marine environment throughout the late Younger Dryas–Holocene, with the highest input of inert carbon in the late Younger Dryas. Although the sediments contain some recent marine palynomorphs, there is no other evidence of fresh marine organic carbon. In contrast, our results indicate that these shelf sediments represent a significant sink of recycled organic carbon. The results of pyrolysis geochemistry revealed that ~90% of the total organic carbon in the sediments is inert. The organic petrography analyses revealed that >70–84% of the organic carbon in the sediment core is terrigenous. Reworked dinoflagellate cysts showed a continuous provenance of Cretaceous land‐derived material, most likely from the nearby Clavering Island. Our study points to the importance of constraining the organic matter origin, composition and preservation in marine sediments to achieve more accurate palaeoenvironmental reconstructions based on organic proxies. AbstractThis paper compiles and correlates for the first time Cretaceous to Eocene palynostratigraphies across the Arctic. It focuses on Greenland and adjacent areas, including the Labrador–Baffin Seaway, onshore Nuussuaq Basin in central West Greenland, onshore southern East Greenland, central East Greenland, North-East Greenland, eastern North Greenland and the Danmarkshavn Basin, but also extends to the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and the Barents Sea region offshore Norway. The paper compiles data from more than three decades of detailed Arctic palynological analyses, based mainly on dinoflagellate cysts. It gives a historical overview of the Cretaceous to Paleogene palaeontological studies of Greenland and presents an overview of 85 palynological intervals and numerous bioevents. The palynological assemblages from the Labrador–Baffin Seaway, Nuussuaq Basin and north-east Baffin Bay reflect the opening of the Labrador–Baffin Seaway, from a brackish to freshwater environment in a large embayment in the Early Cretaceous to an open marine seaway in the Late Cretaceous. Assemblages reveal dinoflagellate cyst provincialism between the opening stages of the Labrador–Baffin Seaway and the already opened Greenland–Norwegian–Barents seaway. The Upper Cretaceous global Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE2) spanning the Cenomanian/Turonian boundary is recognised from Arctic Canada, north-east Baffin Bay, Nuussuaq Basin in central West Greenland, and North-East Greenland, and is mapped and correlated based on dinoflagellate cyst stratigraphy and carbon isotope (δ13Corg) curves. The dinoflagellate cyst assemblages of the Cretaceous/Paleogene boundary are correlated from the Labrador Sea across to the Nuussuaq Basin in central West Greenland; in both areas the earliest Danian palynological assemblage is represented by incoming warm-water species. The presence of the global Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM) in the Paleogene successions in North-East Greenland and in exploration wells in the Labrador–Baffin Seaway is indicated by the incoming of the warm-water dinoflagellate cyst species Axiodinium augustum. Evaluation of the regional geotectonic impact of the High Arctic Large Igneous Province (HALIP) in the present‐day northern Atlantic region has been hindered by poor correlation between the Svalbard–Barents Shelf region and eastern North Greenland. New sedimentological and biostratigraphic data from Peary Land and Kronprins Christian Land (Kilen), North Greenland reveal that the Lower Cretaceous palaeogeographic and sequence stratigraphic development of this area is closely comparable to that of Svalbard. The succession records Hauterivian – early Barremian regional uplift and emergence followed by fluvial sedimentation and subsequent transgression in the late Barremian – early Aptian. Recognition of this tectonically forced regression in North Greenland provides a link to a coeval well‐known tectonostratigraphic event in the Svalbard region, and hence to regional tectono‐magmatic uplift heralding the HALIP and the initiation of the Amerasia Basin. Syn-rift successions contain both prolific organic-rich and coarse-grained rocks, but these rocks are usually studied independently. Thus, the interplay among organic matter deposition, tectonics and sediment supply is not commonly assessed. In this study, we use well logs, Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content, biostratigraphy and seismic data from the SW Barents Sea to unravel the variability of organic-rich successions and its interaction with potential reservoir rocks in areas affected by active normal faulting versus tectonically stable areas. Four Transgressive-Regressive (T-R) sequences were defined for the Middle to Upper Jurassic Fuglen Formation and for the organic-rich Upper Jurassic to lowermost Cretaceous Hekkingen Formation. Three TOC trends, controlled by palaeobathymetric variations, and organic matter dilution, were identified within the two main organic-rich sequences (sequences 2 and 3): (a) wells with the highest TOC values (>10 wt %) at the base of the succession; (b) wells with the highest TOC values at the top of the succession and (c) wells with high TOC values at the base and top of the succession. Our interpretation indicates that fault activity controlled the TOC trends in two different ways: Firstly, by creating a sharp topographic contrast-triggering hyperpycnal flows, and shallowing the footwalls, where higher oxygen content and less developed stratified waters lowered organic matter preservation. Secondly, by significantly increasing the input of clastic material, which inherently led to dilution of organic matter and resulted in lower TOC values (<6 wt %). We interpret that sand deposition was controlled by the size and geomorphology of the sediment source areas. The western part of the study area (i.e. the Loppa High) was characterized by uplifted footwall islands and localized sands along their flanks, whereas the southern part (i.e. the Finnmark Platform) constituted a larger sediment source area for the Volgian age. Reported ancient bottom current deposits in deep marine settings are scarce and most of them remain contentious. This study describes sedimentological, ichnological and petrographical characteristics of a drill core that covers ca 10 Myr of Upper Cretaceous stratigraphy at Hold with Hope, north‐east Greenland. The core is divided into four facies associations, which are interpreted to reflect deposition from bottom currents, turbidity flows and hemipelagic settling in slope and/or near slope environments. The evidence for bottom current influence is three‐fold. Firstly, pervasive indications of winnowing such as marine bioclast‐rich lags and outsized clasts on 'mud on mud' contacts are suggestive of low‐sediment concentration flows capable of transporting up to pebble‐sized clasts. Common Mn–Fe–Mg rich carbonate matrix cements and various types of hiatal chemogenic lag deposits showing glauconite, apatite and carbonate clasts also point to condensation, prolonged exposure at the sediment–water interface and recurrent phases of sea‐floor erosion. Secondly, such deposits can show indicators for tidal processes such as double mud‐drapes, tangential bottom sets in dune‐scale cross‐bedding and cyclic rhythmites. Thirdly, inverse to normal grading at various scales is common in fully marine, commonly seafloor‐derived sediments. Ichnological data indicate considerable taxonomic variability in the bottom current deposits, but recurrent fabrics are characteristically dominated by morphologically simple burrows such as Thalassinoides and Planolites, with secondary Phycosiphon, Nereites, Zoophycos and/or Chondrites. In general, opportunistic taxa are common whereas mature composite ichnofabrics are rare. The omission surfaces are locally burrowed with stiffground to firmground trace fossil suites. The results contribute to establishing sedimentological, ichnological and mineralogical criteria for recognition of bottom current deposits as well as to the understanding of the Late Cretaceous palaeoenvironmental evolution of the Arctic region. In order to improve the understanding of how the high northern latitudes responded to the escalating warming which led to the middle Cretaceous super greenhouse climate, more temperature proxy records from the High Arctic are needed. One of the current obstacles in obtaining such records is poor age control on the Lower Cretaceous strata in the Boreal region. Here, we provide a biostratigraphic framework for the Rurikfjellet and Helvetiafjellet formations representing the lower part of the Lower Cretaceous succession on Spitsbergen. We also attempt to date the boundary between the Agardhfjellet and the Rurikfjellet formations. This study is based on dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts) from three onshore cores (DH1, DH2 and DH5R) and three outcrop sections (Bohemanflya, Myklegardfjellet and Ullaberget). Relatively abundant and well-preserved dinocyst assemblages from the Rurikfjellet Formation date this unit as early Valanginian – early Barremian. The dinocyst assemblages from the Helvetiafjellet Formation are significantly impoverished and are characterized by reworking, but collectively indicate a Barremian–Aptian age for this formation. An updated and revised lithostratigraphic scheme is presented for the Cretaceous of North-East Greenland from Traill Ø in the south to Store Koldewey in the north. The Ryazanian to lower Maastrichtian succession is up to several kilometres thick and comprises four groups, 12 formations and 18 members. The groups record the tectonic evolution of the East Greenland depocentre on the western flank of the evolving proto-Atlantic seaway. The Wollaston Forland Group encompasses the uppermost Jurassic - lowermost Cretaceous rift-climax succession and contains the Lindemans Bugt and Palnatokes Bjerg Formations; two new members of the latter formation are erected from Store Koldewey. Post-rift Cretaceous strata are referred to the new Brorson Halvø Group and the Home Forland Group. The Brorson Halvø Group (uppermost Hauterivian - middle Albian) is dominated by slope and basinal mudstones of the new Stratumbjerg Formation but also includes fluvio-deltaic and shallow marine sandstones of the revised Steensby Bjerg Formation on northern Hold with Hope and submarine slope apron breccias and conglomerates of the revised Rold Bjerge Formation on Traill Ø. The Home Forland Group covers the middle Albian - Coniacian succession. The basal unconformity records an important mid-Albian tectonic event involving intrabasinal uplift, tilting and erosion, as exemplified by the middle Albian conglomerates of the new Kontaktravine Formation on Clavering Ø. The Home Forland Group is dominated regionally by mud-dominated slope to basinal deposits of the elevated and revised Fosdalen Formation; it also includes lowstand basin-floor fan sandstones of the new upper Albian Langsiden Member. The new Jackson Ø Group (upper Turonian - lower Maastrichtian), records a phase of basin reorganisation marked by a significant fall in sedimentation rate in North-East Greenland, probably linked to rift events in, and bypass to, the central proto-Atlantic rift system. The base of the group is an erosional unconformity on Traill Ø and Geographical Society Ø overlain by submarine slope-apron conglomerates of the Turonian Månedal Formation. The base is conformable on Hold with Hope but is defined by a condensed interval (the Coniacian Nanok Member) that is succeeded conformably by slope and basinfloor turbidite sandstones of the Coniacian-Santonian Østersletten Formation and slope to basinal mudstones of the Campanian - lower Maastrichtian Knudshoved Formation. The new Leitch Bjerg Formation of Campanian slope-apron conglomerates and sandstones in eastern Geographical Society Ø erosionally overlies the Knudshoved Formation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Lower Cretaceous succession in Svalbard is commonly considered as an important analogue to age-equivalent strata on the Barents Shelf which are sporadically targeted by exploration wells. In this study, the stratigraphic and genetic relationship between the Rurikfjellet (open marine), Helvetiafjellet (paralic) and Carolinefjellet (open marine) formations of the Lower Cretaceous succession in Svalbard is evaluated by combining sedimentological outcrop studies with well log and core data across Nordenskiöld Land, central Spitsbergen. Sedimentological characteristics and stratigraphic units are mapped within a refined dinocyst biostratigraphic framework, enabling relatively well-constrained palaeogeographic reconstructions. The Valanginian-lowermost Barremian Rurikfjellet Formation consists of a lower shale-dominated unit of offshore origin which grades upwards into storm-reworked lower shoreface sandstones displaying hummocky cross-stratification. Local occurrences of prodeltaic successions and thick successions of gravity flow deposits containing coal-bearing slump blocks of delta plain origin in some wells, reveal a late Hauterivian progradational pulse which has previously not been recorded in Svalbard. The lower Barremian-lower Aptian Helvetiafjellet Formation consists of fluvial braidplain and paralic deposits which rest unconformably on the Rurikfjellet Formation across the entire study area, reflecting regional uplift and widespread subaerial exposure prior to the onset of paralic deposition. The Helvetiafjellet Formation exhibits increased marine influence upwards, and in the investigated cores the uppermost part of the unit consists of wave-reworked mouth-bar deposits which are truncated by a transgressive conglomerate lag dominated by extrabasinal lithic clasts and intraformational siderite clasts. An up to 10 m-thick, regionally extensive, organic-rich (TOC up to 2.1 wt.%) shale unit of early Aptian age marks the base of the overlying Carolinefjellet Formation. The shale accumulated during a regional flooding event which drowned and eventually transformed the Helvetiafjellet Formation coastal plain into a shallow shelf. The organic facies of the shale unit (Type II-III kerogen) and a high Pr/Ph ratio (>2), in combination with abundant long-chained n-alkanes, suggest that the unit was deposited in a suboxic paralic marine environment strongly influenced by input of terrestrial organic matter. The investigated succession exhibits stratigraphic and petrographic resemblance to age-equivalent strata in NE Greenland, suggesting that these successions may have formed part of the same drainage system located on the northwestern margin of the Barents Shelf. Thus, by highlighting the Early Cretaceous palaeogeographic evolution in Svalbard, this study contributes to the regional stratigraphic understanding of the Lower Cretaceous succession on the wider northern Barents Shelf. Large structural highs and sedimentary basins are identified from mapping of the West Greenland continental margin from the Labrador Sea to the Baffin Bay. We present a new tectonic elements map and a map of thickness from the seabed to the basement of the entire West Greenland margin. In addition, a new stratigraphic scheme of the main lithologies and tectonostratigraphy based on ties to all offshore exploration wells is presented together with seven interpreted seismic sections. The work is based on interpretation of more than 135 000 km of 2D seismic reflection data supported by other geophysical data, including gravity- and magnetic data and selected 3D seismic data, and is constrained by correlation to wells and seabed samples. Eight seismic mega-units (A-H) from the seabed to the basement, related to distinct tectonostratigraphic phases, were mapped. The oldest units include pre-rift basins that contain Proterozoic and Palaeozoic successions. Cretaceous syn-rift phases are characterised by development of large extensional fault blocks and basins with wedge-shaped units. The basin strata include Cretaceous and Palaeogene claystones, sandstones and conglomerates. During the latest Cretaceous, Paleocene and Eocene, crustal extension followed by oceanic crust formation took place, causing separation of the continental margins of Greenland and Canada with north-east to northward movement of Greenland. From Paleocene to Eocene, volcanic rocks dominated the central West Greenland continental margin and covered the Cretaceous basins. Development of the oceanic crust is associated with compressional tectonics and the development of strike-slip and thrust faults, pull-apart basins and inversion structures, most pronounced in the Davis Strait and Baffin Bay regions. During the late Cenozoic, tectonism diminished, though some intra-plate vertical adjustments occurred. The latest basin development was characterised by formation of thick Neogene to Quaternary marine successions including contourite drifts and glacial related shelf progradation towards the west and south-west. New palynological analysis of samples from 13 offshore wells on the Canadian Margin and six wells on the West Greenland Margin has led to a new event biostratigraphic framework for Cretaceous-Cenozoic strata of the Labrador Sea - Davis Strait - Baffin Bay (Labrador-Baffin Seaway) region. This framework is based on about 150 dinoflagellate cyst taxa and 30 acritarch, algal, fungal and plant microfossil (mostly miospore) taxa. In the systematics we include three new genera of dinocysts (Scalenodinium, Simplicidinium and Taurodinium), 16 new species of dinocysts (Chirop - teridium gilbertii, Chytroeisphaeridia hadra, Cleistosphaeridium elegantulum, Cleistosphaeridium palmatum, Dapsilidinium pseudoinsertum, De flan drea borealis, Evittosphaerula? foraminosa, Gingi - nodinium? flexidentatum, Hystrichosphaeridium quadratum, Hystrichostrogylon digitus, Impletosphaeridium apodastum, Scalenodinium scalenum, Surculosphaeridium convocatum, Talladinium pellis, Taurodinium granulatum and Trithyrodinium? conservatum), four emendations of dinocyst genera (Alterbidinium, Chatangiella, Chiropteridium and Surculosphaeridium), six new combinations for dinocyst species (Alterbidinium biaperturum, Deflandrea majae, Kleithriasphaeridium mantellii, Simplicidinium insolitum, Spongodinium grossum, Spongodinium obscurum), one new acritarch species (Fromea quadrangularis), one new miospore species (Baculatisporites crenulatus) and one new combination for miospores (Tiliaepollenites crassipites). Most of the taxa included provide age information, almost exclusively last occurrences (range 'tops'), but some are useful mainly for environmental interpretations. The Late Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE2) represents a major perturbation of the global carbon cycle caused by the widespread deposition of organic-rich black shales. Although the paleoceanographic response and the spatial extent of bottom-water anoxia in low and mid-paleolatitudes are reasonably well constrained for OAE2, similar data from high paleolatitudes are lacking. Here, we present palynostratigraphy and organic-carbon isotope stratigraphy from the Sverdrup Basin, Axel Heiberg Island (Canada). It is shown that episodes of high marine organic-carbon burial at paleolatitudes of ~70°N is contemporaneous with the widely observed occurrence of black shale deposition during OAE2. Paleontological, lithological, and geochemical data indicate normal marine conditions with persistent anoxic bottom waters during OAE2. The results imply that the high marine primary productivity pulse during OAE2 may have caused massive organic-carbon burial on the Arctic shelf in general, with important implications for hydrocarbon source-rock distribution in the Arctic region. The article presents a case study of spectral gamma-ray characterisation of the deltaic Cretaceous Atane Formation in Nuussuaq Basin, Greenland. It states that gamma-ray logs are used for lithology indicator and petrophysical model which are emitted by three elements such as potassium, thorium, and uranium. The case study reportedly fails to resolve the grain-size variation of the formation because of the presence of the elements.

The article focuses on a study on the geological development of the Femern Bælt area between Denmark and Germany. The study involves 170 samples from 46 wells that have been fully cored in the pre-Quartenary deposits. Processes used in the study are biostratigraphy and lithostratigraphy. Several events in the geological development of the area are mentioned which include erosional episodes in the Selandian deposits, clastic marine sedimentation and deposition.

The article describes the Palaeogene deposits on several localities on Wollaston Forland, Sabine Ø and Hold with Hope in North-East Greenland in 2010. It believes that the Palaeogene sediments in the areas comprise Paleocene and earliest Eocene strata with hiatus that could span the major part of the Selandian and Thanetian. It also notes that the age of the underlying Cretaceous deposits east of the fault in Haredal is Early-Middle Campanian.

Based on morphological observations carried out on the same material, but submitted to different processing, Trithyrodinium fragile Davey 1969 is herein demonstrated to be a junior synonym of Trithyrodinium evittii Drugg 1967. From both original descriptions, the only way that the two species can be separated is by the presence or the absence of a thick brown organic layer on the surface of the endocyst. The present study proves that this is an artificial separation caused by different processing techniques. As a result, T. evittii is emended in order to encompass specimens, wholly or partially exhibiting this brown organic layer and previously attributed to T. fragile. These new observations also have stratigraphic and palaeoenvironmental implications. Combination of both synonym lists reveals that T. evittii, which is regarded as a warm water species (58°N to 52°S) in the latest Cretaceous, migrated to higher latitudes (80°N to 75°S) in the earliest Paleocene. Consequently, an increase in oceanic circulation and/or temperature increase of the surface water is suggested during this epoch. In support of this contention, several peak occurrences of T. evittii are recorded just above the K/T boundary in high latitudes. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The generally warm Cretaceous (c. 145-66 Ma) climate culminated in the mid Cretaceous Hot Greenhouse climate (95-85 Ma). Another characteristic feature of the Cretaceous period is a high number of Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAE) related with major carbon cycle perturbations. While the Lower Cretaceous successions from equatorial region and middle latitudes are relatively well studied, sections from High Arctic settings are sparse and occasionally suffering from poor age constrains.The present study was performed within the LoCrA (Lower Cretaceous Basin Studies in The Arctic) consortium and focused on the Lower Cretaceous succession on Spitsbergen (this study) and the Barents Sea. The Lower Cretaceous succession on central Spitsbergen is divided into: the Rurikfjellet, Helvetiafjellet and Carolinefjellet formations. Each formation was deposited under different environmental conditions, ranging from open to shallow marine (Rurikfjellet and Carolinefjellet formations) to fluvio-deltaic (Helvetiafjellet Formation). Our improved age model (based on palynology, macrofossils and organic stable carbon isotopes) for the Rurikfjellet and Helvetiafjellet formation confirms that these two units span the Valanginian to lower Aptian. Dinoflagellate cysts (dinocysts) are excellent for biostratigraphy as well as paleoecology. Dinoflagellates, forming the primary component of marine plankton, are sensitive to various environmental factors: temperature, salinity, nutrient availability, etc. Within the studied interval a number of dinocyst events occurs, which appears to be synchronous between Spitsbergen and other high-Arctic basins (e.g. in Greenland and Arctic Canada). However, some of the characteristic Early Cretaceous dinocyst taxa, are either absent or only observed locally.
