Abstract

In this work, we demonstrate in a proof of concept experiment the efficient noise absorption of a 3-D printed panel designed with appropriately arranged space-coiled labyrinthine acoustic elementary cells. The labyrinthine units are numerically simulated to determine their dispersion characteristics and then experimentally tested in a Kundt Tube to verify the dependence of absorption characteristics on cell thickness and lateral size. The resonance frequency is found to scale linearly with respect to both thickness and lateral size in the considered range, enabling tunability of the working frequency. Using these data, a flat panel is designed and fabricated by arranging cells of different dimensions in a quasi-periodic lattice, exploiting the acoustic "rainbow" effect, i.e. superimposing the frequency response of the different cells to generate a wider absorption spectrum, covering the required frequency range between 800 and 1200 Hz. The panel is thinner and more lightweight compared to other sound absorption solutions, and designed in modular form so as to be applicable to different geometries. The performance of the panel is experimentally validated in a small-scale reverberation room, and close to ideal absorption is demonstrated at the desired frequency of operation. Thus, this work suggests a design procedure for noise-mitigation panel solutions and provides experimental proof of the versatility and effectiveness of labyrinthine metamaterials for low-frequency sound attenuation.

Abstract

Single high-intensity premature stimuli when applied to the ventricles during ventricular drive of an ectopic site, as in Winfree's "pinwheel experiment," usually induce reentry arrhythmias in the normal heart, while single low-intensity stimuli barely do. Yet ventricular arrhythmia vulnerability during normal sinus rhythm remains largely unexplored. With a view to define the role of anisotropy on ventricular vulnerability to unidirectional conduction block and reentry, we revisited the pinwheel experiment with reduced constraints in the in situ rat heart. New features included single premature stimulation during normal sinus rhythm, stimulation and unipolar potential mapping from the same high-resolution epicardial electrode array, and progressive increase in stimulation strength and prematurity from diastolic threshold until arrhythmia induction. Measurements were performed with 1-ms cathodal stimuli at multiple test sites (n = 26) in seven rats. Stimulus-induced virtual electrode polarization during sinus beat recovery phase influenced premature ventricular responses. Specifically, gradual increase in stimulus strength and prematurity progressively induced make, break, and graded-response stimulation mechanisms. Hence unidirectional conduction block occurred as follows: 1) along fiber direction, on right and left ventricular free walls (n = 23), initiating figure-eight reentry (n = 17) and tachycardia (n = 12), and 2) across fiber direction, on lower interventricular septum (n = 3), initiating spiral wave reentry (n = 2) and tachycardia (n = 1). Critical time window (55.1 ± 4.7 ms, 68.2 ± 6.0 ms) and stimulus strength lower limit (4.9 ± 0.6 mA) defined vulnerability to reentry. A novel finding of this study was that ventricular tachycardia evolves and is maintained by episodes of scroll-like wave and focal activation couplets. We also found that single low-intensity premature stimuli can induce repetitive ventricular response (n = 13) characterized by focal activations. NEW & NOTEWORTHY We performed ventricular cathodal point stimulation during sinus rhythm by progressively increasing stimulus strength and prematurity. Virtual electrode polarization and recovery gradient progressively induced make, break, and graded-response stimulation mechanisms. Unidirectional conduction block occurred along or across fiber direction, initiating figure-eight or spiral wave reentry, respectively, and tachycardia sustained by scroll wave and focal activations. Abstract

The feasibility of the entire process of γ-ray tracking is demonstrated experimentally for the first time. The accurracy of the results is verified by the capability to carry out Doppler correction of γ-rays emitted in flight. Abstract

Globalization, liberalization, competition and spatial interaction are significant factors affecting the transformation of manufacturing industries worldwide. In the transportation and logistics industry, however, cooperation is becoming even more critical than competition in determining firms' efficiency. Cooperation has always characterized the liner sector in which strategic alliances, mergers and acquisitions have generated twin effects: notable increases in ship size and falls in freight rates. Meanwhile, the stevedoring industry is undergoing privatization-driven consolidation and the emergence of global pure terminal operators. This article focuses on vertical integration between global carriers and terminal operators. We address the following key current issues: dedicated terminals as a strategy for cutting costs and controlling integrated transport chains; the struggle for supply chain control, involving global carriers versus global terminal operators, driven by financial power and technical and managerial capability. We close analysing one of the core problems of the market, namely the evolving role of the dedicated terminals. For the pure stevedores they represent an opportunity to secure a cargo, while in the hands of the liners they enable cost stability and the possibility to put pressure on pure terminal operators.
