Animals' digestion, energy metabolism, and immunity are significantly influenced by interactions between the gut microbiota and the intestinal environment of the host. Previous studies have shown that gut microbiota of Eothenomys miletus can respond to environmental changes, high fiber or fat foods. But how E. miletus in high-altitude adapt to their environment through gut microbiota and physiological changes during winter food shortages period was unclear. In the present study, we evaluated the altitude differences in gut microbiota and their interactions with physiology in terms of body mass regulation in order to study the adaptation of the gut microbiota and physiological indicators of the E. miletus under food restriction settings. E. miletus were collected for this study from Jingdong County (JD, low-altitude) and Xianggelila County (XGLL, high-altitude) in Yunnan Province, China, and split into three groups: control group, food-restricted feeding group for 7 days, and re-feeding group was offered a standard diet for 14 days. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and physiological methods were used to analyze the abundance and community structure of gut microbiota, as well as physiological indicators of each group in E. miletus. The results showed that while the RMR changed more during the period of food restriction, the body mass and major organ masses of E. miletus from high-altitude changed less. After food restriction, RMR in XGLL decreased by 25.25%, while that of in JD decreased by 16.54%. E. miletus from the XGLL had gut bacteria that were more abundant in Firmicutes and had fewer OTUs, and the microbiota had a closer interaction with physiological indicators. Moreover, the gut microbiota adapted to the food shortage environment by enhancing the genera of Bacterroides , Ruminococcus , Turicibacter , and Treponema to improve the utilization of nutrient resources. The interactions between microbial species and the equilibrium of energy homeostasis were further impacted by alterations in physiological indicators and microbial community structure. These variations were important for E. miletus to adapt to the fluctuations and changes of food resources in high-altitude region, which also expand our knowledge of organismal adaptations and the mechanisms behind the interactions between gut bacteria and host physiology. Livestock farming is vital to a country's economy, and technological innovations in animal genetics and reproductive biotechnologies are key for environmental and socioeconomic development. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of Coffea arabica grounds (CAG) extract on the semen parameters of Fleckvieh cattle. CAG was processed, and its antioxidant capacity was assessed using DPPH, FRAP, and total phenols assays. Semen was collected from a pedigree bull and analysed macroscopically and microscopically. Different concentrations of CAG (0, 1, 1.5, and 2 mg/ml) were tested at 4, 12, 24, and 36 h post-refrigeration. The study used a completely randomised design with ten replications, and variables such as motility, kinetic parameters, membrane functionality, and acrosomal integrity were analysed. The normal distribution of the variables -- motility, kinetic parameters, membrane functionality, and acrosomal integrity -- was analysed using the Shapiro-Wilk statistical test (P > 0.05). An analysis of variance was then performed with a significance level of P < 0.05 to compare the means, using InfoStat software. Results showed that 1 mg of CAG significantly improved total motility and progressive motility at 4 h, along with kinetic parameters and membrane integrity. Overall, CAG exhibits antioxidant properties that enhance sperm characteristics, particularly at 1 mg/ml concentration after 4 h of refrigeration. However, further studies are needed to understand better the mechanisms of action and the overall efficacy of CAG as an antioxidant agent in this specific context. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Guinea pigs have historically been used as a food source and are also an important model for studying the human intestines. Fasting is the act of temporarily stopping the intake of food. This process can alter the microbiota of various animals. This study is the first to investigate the impact of fasting on the cecum microbiome of three guinea pig breeds. We investigated the impact of fasting on the microbiome population structure in the cecum of three guinea pig breeds. This was done by sequencing and analyzing the V4 hypervariable region of the 16S rRNA gene in bacterial communities found in cecum mucosa samples. To achieve this, we established two treatment groups (fasting and fed), for each of the three guinea pig breeds: Andina, Inti, and Peru. The study involved twenty-eight guinea pigs, which were divided into the following groups: Andina-fed (five), Andina-fasting (five), Inti-fed (four), Inti-fasting (five), Peru-fed (five), and Peru-fasting (four). The results indicated a significant difference in beta diversity between the treatment groups for the Peru breed (P-value = 0.049), but not for the treatment groups of the Andina and Inti breeds. The dominant phyla across all groups were Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. We observed variations in the abundance of different taxa in the cecum microbiota when comparing the treatment groups for each breed. Additionally, there was a higher number of unique taxa observed in the fasting groups compared to the fed groups. We discovered that the genus Victivallis was the only one present in all fasting groups across all breeds. Despite the findings, the resilience of the gutmicrobiome was not challenged in all three breeds, which can lead to disruptive changes that may affect the overall maintenance of the cecum microbiome. Based on the observed differences in the treatment groups of the Peru breed, it can be suggested that fasting has a greater impact on this particular breed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
