Dark matter induced event rate in an Earth-based detector is predicted to show an annual modulation as a result of the Earth's orbital motion around the Sun. We searched for this modulation signature using the ionization signal of the DarkSide-50 liquid argon time projection chamber. No significant signature compatible with dark matter is observed in the electron recoil equivalent energy range above $40~{\rm eV_{ee}}$, the lowest threshold ever achieved in such a search., 8 pages, 4 figures

Dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei can result in the excitation and ionization of the recoiling atom through the so-called Migdal effect. The energy deposition from the ionization electron adds to the energy deposited by the recoiling nuclear system and allows for the detection of interactions of sub-GeV/c2 mass dark matter. We present new constraints for sub-GeV/c2 dark matter using the dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber of the DarkSide-50 experiment with an exposure of (12 306±184) kg d. The analysis is based on the ionization signal alone and significantly enhances the sensitivity of DarkSide-50, enabling sensitivity to dark matter with masses down to 40 MeV/c2. Furthermore, it sets the most stringent upper limit on the spin independent dark matter nucleon cross section for masses below 3.6 GeV/c2.

We present a novel approach for the search of dark matter in the DarkSide-50 experiment, relying on Bayesian Networks. This method incorporates the detector response model into the likelihood function, explicitly maintaining the connection with the quantity of interest. No assumptions about the linearity of the problem or the shape of the probability distribution functions are required, and there is no need to morph signal and background spectra as a function of nuisance parameters. By expressing the problem in terms of Bayesian Networks, we have developed an inference algorithm based on a Markov Chain Monte Carlo to calculate the posterior probability. A clever description of the detector response model in terms of parametric matrices allows us to study the impact of systematic variations of any parameter on the final results. Our approach not only provides the desired information on the parameter of interest, but also potential constraints on the response model. Our results are consistent with recent published analyses and further refine the parameters of the detector response model., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

We report on the search for dark matter WIMPs in the mass range below 10 GeV/c$^2$, from the analysis of the entire dataset acquired with a low-radioactivity argon target by the DarkSide-50 experiment at LNGS. The new analysis benefits from more accurate calibration of the detector response, improved background model, and better determination of systematic uncertainties, allowing us to accurately model the background rate and spectra down to 0.06 keV$_{er}$. A 90% C.L. exclusion limit for the spin-independent cross section of 3 GeV/c$^2$ mass WIMP on nucleons is set at 6$\times$10$^{-43}$ cm$^2$, about a factor 10 better than the previous DarkSide-50 limit. This analysis extends the exclusion region for spin-independent dark matter interactions below the current experimental constraints in the $[1.2, 3.6]$ GeV/c$^2$ WIMP mass range., 11 pages, 12 figures

International audience; Background: Mainly because of its long half-life and despite its scientific relevance, spectroscopic measurements of 176Lu beta decays are very limited and lack formulation of shape factors. Direct measurement of its Q-value is also presently unreported. In addition, the description of forbidden decays provides interesting challenges for nuclear theory. The comparison of precise experimental results with theoretical calculations for these decays can help to test underlying models and can aid the interpretation of data from other experiments.Purpose: Perform the first precision measurement of 176Lu beta-decay spectrum and attempt the observation of its electron capture decays, as well as perform the first precision direct measurement of the 176Lu beta-decay Q-value. Compare the shape of the precisely determined experimental beta-spectrum to theoretical calculations, and compare the end-point energy to that obtained from an independent Q-value measurement.Method: The 176Lu beta-decay spectra and the search for electron capture decays were measured with an experimental set-up that employed lutetium-based scintillator crystals and an NaI(Tl) spectrometer for coincidence counting. The beta-decay Q-value was determined via high-precision Penning trap mass spectrometry (PTMS) with the LEBIT facility at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The beta-spectrum calculations were performed within the Fermi theory formalism with nuclear structure effects calculated using a shell model approach. Results: Both beta transitions of 176Lu were experimentally observed and corresponding shape factors formulated in their entire energy ranges. Search for electron captures decay branches led to an experimental upper limit of 6.3x10-6 compared to its beta decays. The 176Lu beta-decay and electron capture Q-values were measured using PTMS to be 1193.0(6) keV and 108.9(8) keV, respectively. This enabled precise beta end-point energies of 596.2(6) keV and 195.3(6) keV for the primary and secondary beta-decays, respectively, to be determined. The conserved vector current hypothesis was applied to calculate the relativistic vector matrix elements. The beta-spectrum shape was shown to significantly depend on the Coulomb displacement energy and on the value of the axial vector coupling constant gA, which was extracted according to different assumptions.

- Abstract
We investigate the possible origins of the reactor antineutrino anomalies in norm and shape within the framework of a summation model where β− transitions are simulated by a phenomenological model of Gamow-Teller decay strength. The general trends of divergence from the Huber-Mueller model on the antineutrino side can be reproduced in both norm and shape. From the exact electron-antineutrino correspondence of the summation model, we predict similar distortions in the electron spectra, suggesting that biases on the reference spectra of fission electrons could be the cause of the anomalies.

We investigate the possible origins of the norm and shape reactor antineutrino anomalies in the framework of a summation model (SM) where $\beta^{-}$ transitions are simulated by a phenomenological Gamow-Teller $\beta$-decay strength model. The general trends of the discrepancies to the Huber-Mueller model on the antineutrino side can be reproduced both in norm and shape. From the exact electron-antineutrino correspondence of the SM model, we predict similar distortions in the electron spectra, suggesting that biases on the reference fission-electron spectra could be at the origin of the anomalies.

We present a search for dark matter particles with sub-GeV/$c^2$ masses whose interactions have final state electrons using the DarkSide-50 experiment's (12306 $\pm$ 184) kg d low-radioactivity liquid argon exposure. By analyzing the ionization signals, we exclude new parameter space for the dark matter-electron cross section $\bar{\sigma}_e$, the axioelectric coupling constant $g_{Ae}$, and the dark photon kinetic mixing parameter $\kappa$. We also set the first dark matter direct-detection constraints on the mixing angle $\left|U_{e4}\right|^2$ for keV sterile neutrinos., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

Nuclear reactors are uniquely powerful, abundant, and flavor-pure sources of antineutrinos that continue to play a vital role in the US neutrino physics program. The US reactor antineutrino physics community is a diverse interest group encompassing many detection technologies and many particle physics topics, including Standard Model and short-baseline oscillations, BSM physics searches, and reactor flux and spectrum modeling. The community's aims offer strong complimentary with numerous aspects of the wider US neutrino program and have direct relevance to most of the topical sub-groups composing the Snowmass 2021 Neutrino Frontier. Reactor neutrino experiments also have a direct societal impact and have become a strong workforce and technology development pipeline for DOE National Laboratories and universities. This white paper, prepared as a submission to the Snowmass 2021 community organizing exercise, will survey the state of the reactor antineutrino physics field and summarize the ways in which current and future reactor antineutrino experiments can play a critical role in advancing the field of particle physics in the next decade., Contribution to Snowmass 2021

Dark matter elastic scattering off nuclei can result in the excitation and ionization of the recoiling atom through the so-called Migdal effect. The energy deposition from the ionization electron adds to the energy deposited by the recoiling nuclear system and allows for the detection of interactions of sub-GeV/c$^2$ mass dark matter. We present new constraints for sub-GeV/c$^2$ dark matter using the dual-phase liquid argon time projection chamber of the DarkSide-50 experiment with an exposure of (12306 $\pm$ 184) kg d. The analysis is based on the ionization signal alone and significantly enhances the sensitivity of DarkSide-50, enabling sensitivity to dark matter with masses down to 40 MeV/c$^2$. Furthermore, it sets the most stringent upper limit on the spin independent dark matter nucleon cross section for masses below $3.6$ GeV/c$^2$., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Sterile neutrinos are natural extensions to the standard model of particle physics and provide a possible portal to the dark sector. We report a new search for the existence of sub-MeV sterile neutrinos using the decay-momentum reconstruction technique in the decay of $^7$Be. The experiment measures the total energy of the $^7$Li daughter atom from the electron capture decay of $^7$Be implanted into sensitive superconducting tunnel junction (STJ) quantum sensors. This first experiment presents data from a single STJ operated at a low count rate for a net total of 28 days, and provides exclusion limits on sterile neutrinos in the mass range from 100 to 850 keV that improve upon previous work by up to an order of magnitude., 7 pages. 3 figures. International audience; Spectral unmixing was investigated for fast spectroscopic identification in γ-emitter mixtures at low-statistics in the case of measurements performed to prevent illegal nuclear material trafficking or for in situ environmental analysis following a radiological or nuclear accident. For that purpose, a multiplicative update algorithm based on full-spectrum analysis was tested in the case of a 3″x3″ NaI(Tl) detector. Automatic decision-making was addressed using Monte Carlo calculations of decision thresholds and detection limits. The first results obtained with a portable instrument equipped with a 3″x3″ NaI(Tl) detector designed for the control of food samples by non-expert users following a radiological or nuclear accident, are also presented.

We present high-precision theoretical predictions for the electron energy spectra for the ground-state to ground-state β decays of 214Pb, 212Pb, and 85Kr most relevant to the background of liquid xenon dark matter detectors. The effects of nuclear structure on the spectral shapes are taken into account using large-scale shell-model calculations. Final spectra also include atomic screening and exchange effects. The impact of nuclear structure effects on the 214Pb and 212Pb spectra below ≈100 keV, pertinent for several searches for new physics, are found to be comparatively larger than those from the atomic effects alone. We find that the full calculation for 214Pb (212Pb) predicts 15.0%–23.2% (12.1%–19.0%) less event rate in a 1–15 keV energy region of interest compared to the spectrum calculated as an allowed transition when using values of the weak axial vector coupling in the range gA=0.7–1.0. The discrepancy highlights the importance of both a proper theoretical treatment and the need for direct measurements of these spectra for a thorough understanding of β decay backgrounds in future experiments. peerReviewed

Background: The understanding and description of forbidden decays provides interesting challenges for nuclear theory. These calculations could help to test underlying nuclear models and interpret experimental data. Purpose: Compare a direct measurement of the $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay $Q$ value with the $\beta$-decay spectrum end-point energy measured by Quarati et al. using LaBr$_3$ detectors [Appl. Radiat. Isot. 108, 30 (2016)]. Use new precise measurements of the $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay and electron capture (EC) $Q$ values to improve theoretical calculations of the $\beta$-decay spectrum and EC probabilities. Method: High-precision Penning trap mass spectrometry was used to measure cyclotron frequency ratios of $^{138}$La, $^{138}$Ce and $^{138}$Ba ions from which $\beta$-decay and EC $Q$ values for $^{138}$La were obtained. Results: The $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay and EC $Q$ values were measured to be $Q$ = 1052.42(41) keV and $Q_{EC}$ = 1748.41(34) keV, improving the precision compared to the values obtained in the most recent atomic mass evaluation [Wang, et al., Chin. Phys. C 41, 030003 (2017)] by an order of magnitude. These results are used for improved calculations of the $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay shape factor and EC probabilities. New determinations for the $^{138}$Ce 2EC $Q$ value and the atomic masses of $^{138}$La, $^{138}$Ce, and $^{138}$Ba are also reported. Conclusion: The $^{138}$La $\beta$-decay $Q$ value measured by Quarati et al. is in excellent agreement with our new result, which is an order of magnitude more precise. Uncertainties in the shape factor calculations for $^{138}$La beta-decay using our new $Q$ value are reduced by an order of magnitude. Uncertainties in the EC probability ratios are also reduced and show improved agreement with experimental data., Comment: Nine pages, eight figures

Physics - Atomic Physics - Abstract
We consider the energy spectrum of emitted electrons in $\beta$-decay. Exact Coulomb Dirac wave functions describing the $\beta$-electron in the Coulomb field of the daughter nucleus are used. Further, the improved wave functions which include the screening of the Coulomb field due to the atomic electron cloud are also used. Thus, the interaction between the $\beta$-electron and the field due to the daughter atom is treated within a nonperturbative approach. Are shown the modifications due to the screening on the $\beta$ spectra and shown that those effects are very important. In addition, are addressed the contributions to the $\beta$ spectra due to the exchange terms and shown that the corresponding effects can be substantial. Higher orders arising from the multipole expansion are considered. A comparison of the theoretical results obtained in this work has been made with recent experimental data and a very good agreement was observed., Comment: 9 pages and 3 figures submitted to PRA

NUCLEAR electron capture , *PHASE transitions , *RADIOISOTOPES , *RADIOACTIVE decay , *PARAMETER estimation - Abstract
Electron capture properties are crucial to establish the decay schemes of numerous radionuclides. The present modelling aims at improving the theoretical estimates of these decays, which are needed when no measurement is available. Allowed and forbidden unique transitions are calculated on the basis of precise relativistic wave functions of the atomic electrons, determined in previous work. In this context, correcting for atomic effects is of high importance. The two common approaches from Bahcall and Vatai to correct for the overlap and exchange effects have been extended to every subshell in a unified formulation, with the electron occupation precisely taken into account. The shake-up and shake-off effects, which create secondary vacancies, and the influence of the hole due to the capture process, have been considered. Uncertainties are also estimated. Relative capture probabilities and their ratios, including capture-to-positron ratios, have been found to be in good agreement with a selection of precise measurements. This modelling was then applied to the third forbidden unique transition of 40 K decay, with an update of the recommended values for the branching ratios and the total decay half-life. Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The quenching of the N=20 shell gap in neutron-rich nuclei is investigated by studying the single-particle structure of 27Ne via neutron transfer using a 26Ne beam. Two low-lying negative-parity intruder states have been observed, the lowest of which is identified as Jπ=3/2−, confirming earlier speculations. A level identified as 7/2− is observed higher in energy than the 3/2−, contrary to the ordering at β-stability and at an energy significantly different from the predictions of previous shell-model calculations. The measured energies and deduced spectroscopic factors are well reproduced in full (0,1)-ℏω 0s-0p-0d-1s-0f-1p calculations in which there is a significant ad hoc reduction (∼0.7 MeV) in the N=20 shell gap.

The spectroscopy of 21O has been investigated using a radioactive 20O beam and the (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The ground and first excited states have been determined to be Jpi=5/2+ and Jpi=1/2+ respectively. Two neutron unbound states were observed at excitation energies of 4.76 +- 0.10 and 6.16 +- 0.11. The spectroscopic factor deduced for the lower of these interpreted as a 3/2+ level, reveals a rather pure 0d3/2 single-particle configuration. The large energy difference between the 3/2+ and 1/2+ states is indicative of the emergence of the N=16 magic number. For the higher lying resonance, which has a character consistent with a spin-parity assignment of 3/2+ or 7/2-, a 71% branching ratio to the first 2+ state in 20O has been observed. The results are compared with new shell model calculations., 5 pages, 2 figures

We investigated the low-lying spectroscopy of 6He via the 2-neutron transfer reaction induced by the 8He SPIRAL beam at 15.4 A.MeV on a proton-rich target. The light charged recoil particles produced by the direct reactions were measured using theMUST2 Si-strip telescope array. Two new resonances were observed above the known 2+ state in 6He, and the angular momentum transfer was deduced through the analysis of the angular distributions. Results are discussed in comparison with the recent calculations of various nuclear structure theories which include the coupling to the continuum technique and to the ones which give an understanding of the cluster correlations in the light weakly-bound nuclei.

Expérience GANIL, SISSI, MUST2/E537; International audience; An excited state in the proton-rich unbound nucleus 12O was identified at 1.8(4) MeV via missing-mass spectroscopy with the 14Oðp; tÞ reaction at 51 AMeV. The spin-parity of the state was determined to be 0þ or 2þ by comparing the measured differential cross sections with distorted-wave calculations. The lowered location of the excited state in 12O indicates the breakdown of the major shell closure at Z ¼ 8 near the proton drip line. This demonstrates the persistence of mirror symmetry in the disappearance of the magic number 8 between 12O and its mirror partner 12Be.

Proton removal measurements of the (e, e′p), (d,3He), and fast-beam knockout types show a consistent reduction of the spectroscopic factor when compared to shell model calculations [1-3]. The loss of single-particle strength is explained as the result of the short-range correlations between nucleons that are not accounted for in shell model calculations [1,3]. A similar reduction is seen with neutron knockout measurements, as would be expected because of isospin symmetry [1]. The interpretation of these results is complicated by the observation of a dependence of the reduction factor on the asymmetry of the proton and neutron Fermi energy surfaces ( S, with S 0 for near-stable nuclei) [4]. However, the observed trend is largely deduced from measurements of nucleon knockout from exotic nuclei with large values of | S|, and there are no analogous (e, e′n) data to which to compare. It is, therefore, important to supplement these results with data obtained through different reaction mechanisms. The TIARA, MUST2, VAMOS, and EXOGAM systems were employed at the GANIL/SPIRAL facility to provide complete kinematics measurements of the 2H(26Ne,t)25Ne and 1H(26Ne,d)25Ne reactions. The (d, t) and (p, d) reactions, measured in inverse kinematics, provide spectroscopic information on the neutron single-hole states around the new N = 16 shell closure found in the Ne region. The two measurements are designed to provide a comparison of results for the neutron-rich nucleus 26Ne ( S = −12.55 MeV) obtained from the fast-beam neutron knockout reaction [5] and the transfer mechanism studied here. The details of the experimental arrangement and the data analysis, including angular distributions and spectroscopic factors, will be presented.

Ne-27 has been investigated through the one neutron transfer reaction Ne-26(d,p)Ne-27 in inverse kinematics at 9.7 MeV/nucleon. The results support the existence of a low lying negative parity state in Ne-27 which is a signature of a reduced sd-fp shell gap in the N = 16 neutron rich region, at variance with stable nuclei.
