Abstract

Dual-phase xenon time projection chamber (TPC) detectors have demonstrated superior search sensitivities to dark matter over a wide range of particle masses. To extend their sensitivity to include low-mass dark matter interactions, it is critical to characterize both the light and charge responses of liquid xenon to sub-keV nuclear recoils. In this work, we report a new nuclear recoil calibration in the LUX detector $\textit{in situ}$ using neutron events from a pulsed Adelphi Deuterium-Deuterium neutron generator. We demonstrate direct measurements of light and charge yields down to 0.45 keV (1.4 scintillation photons) and 0.27 keV (1.3 ionization electrons), respectively, approaching the physical limit of liquid xenon detectors. We discuss the implication of these new measurements on the physics reach of dual-phase xenon TPCs for nuclear-recoil-based low-mass dark matter detection.

Abstract

We estimate the amount of Ar37 produced in natural xenon via cosmic-ray-induced spallation, an inevitable consequence of the transportation and storage of xenon on the Earth’s surface. We then calculate the resulting Ar37 concentration in a 10-tonne payload (similar to that of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment) assuming a representative schedule of xenon purification, storage, and delivery to the underground facility. Using the spallation model by Silberberg and Tsao, the sea-level production rate of Ar37 in natural xenon is estimated to be 0.024 atoms/kg/day. Assuming the xenon is successively purified to remove radioactive contaminants in 1-tonne batches at a rate of 1 tonne/month, the average Ar37 activity after 10 tons are purified and transported underground is 0.058−0.090 μBq/kg, depending on the degree of argon removal during above-ground purification. Such cosmogenic Ar37 will appear as a noticeable background in the early science data, while decaying with a 35-day half-life. This newly noticed production mechanism of Ar37 should be considered when planning for future liquid-xenon-based experiments.

Abstract

LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) is a dark matter detector expected to obtain world-leading sensitivity to weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) interacting via nuclear recoils with a ~7-tonne xenon target mass. This manuscript presents sensitivity projections to several low-energy signals of the complementary electron recoil signal type: 1) an effective neutrino magnetic moment and 2) an effective neutrino millicharge, both for pp-chain solar neutrinos, 3) an axion flux generated by the Sun, 4) axion-like particles forming the galactic dark matter, 5) hidden photons, 6) mirror dark matter, and 7) leptophilic dark matter. Abstract

The LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) experiment will enable a neutrinoless double beta decay search in parallel to the main science goal of discovering dark matter particle interactions. We report the expected LZ sensitivity to $^{136}$Xe neutrinoless double beta decay, taking advantage of the significant ($>$600 kg) $^{136}$Xe mass contained within the active volume of LZ without isotopic enrichment. After 1000 live-days, the median exclusion sensitivity to the half-life of $^{136}$Xe is projected to be 1.06$\times$10$^{26}$ years (90% confidence level), similar to existing constraints. Abstract

LUX, the world's largest dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber, with a fiducial target mass of 118 kg and 10,091 kg-days of exposure thus far, is currently the most sensitive direct dark matter search experiment. The initial null-result limit on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon scattering cross-section was released in October 2013, with a primary scintillation threshold of 2 phe, roughly 3 keVnr for LUX. The detector has been deployed at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead, South Dakota, and is the first experiment to achieve a limit on the WIMP cross-section lower than $10^{-45}$ cm$^{2}$. Here we present a more in-depth discussion of the novel energy scale employed to better understand the nuclear recoil light and charge yields, and of the calibration sources, including the new internal tritium source. Abstract

LUX was the first dark matter experiment to use a $^{83\textrm{m}}$Kr calibration source. In this paper we describe the source preparation and injection. We also present several $^{83\textrm{m}}$Kr calibration applications in the context of the 2013 LUX exposure, including the measurement of temporal and spatial variation in scintillation and charge signal amplitudes, and several methods to understand the electric field within the time projection chamber.

Abstract

The Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment is a dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chamber (TPC) operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. A calibration of nuclear recoils in liquid xenon was performed $\textit{in situ}$ in the LUX detector using a collimated beam of mono-energetic 2.45 MeV neutrons produced by a deuterium-deuterium (D-D) fusion source. The nuclear recoil energy from the first neutron scatter in the TPC was reconstructed using the measured scattering angle defined by double-scatter neutron events within the active xenon volume. We measured the absolute charge ($Q_{y}$) and light ($L_{y}$) yields at an average electric field of 180 V/cm for nuclear recoil energies spanning 0.7 to 74 keV and 1.1 to 74 keV, respectively. This calibration of the nuclear recoil signal yields will permit the further refinement of liquid xenon nuclear recoil signal models and, importantly for dark matter searches, clearly demonstrates measured ionization and scintillation signals in this medium at recoil energies down to $\mathcal{O}$(1 keV)., 24 pages, 15 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

We present the first experimental constraints on the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon elastic cross sections from LUX data acquired in 2013. LUX is a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (Lead, South Dakota), which is designed to observe the recoil signature of galactic WIMPs scattering from xenon nuclei. A profile likelihood ratio analysis of $1.4~\times~10^{4}~\text{kg}\cdot~\text{days}$ of fiducial exposure allows 90% CL upper limits to be set on the WIMP-neutron (WIMP-proton) cross section of $\sigma_n~=~9.4~\times~10^{-41}~\text{cm}^2$ ($\sigma_p~=~2.9~\times~10^{-39}~\text{cm}^2$) at 33 GeV/c$^2$. Abstract

The design and performance of the LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) detector is described as of March 2015 in this Conceptual Design Report. LZ is a second-generation dark-matter detector with the potential for unprecedented sensitivity to weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) of masses from a few GeV/c2 to hundreds of TeV/c2. With total liquid xenon mass of about 10 tonnes, LZ will be the most sensitive experiment for WIMPs in this mass region by the end of the decade. This report describes in detail the design of the LZ technical systems. Expected backgrounds are quantified and the performance of the experiment is presented. The LZ detector will be located at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in South Dakota. The organization of the LZ Project and a summary of the expected cost and current schedule are given., 278 pages. Abstract

© 2015 The Authors. We present the status and prospects of the LUX experiment, which employs approximately 300 kg of two-phase xenon to search for WIMP dark matter interactions. The LUX detector was commissioned at the surface laboratory of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, SD, between December 2011 and February 2012 and the detector has been operating underground since January, 2013. These proceedings review the results of the commissioning run as well as the status of underground data-taking through the summer of 2013.

Abstract

The Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment is a dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (Lead, South Dakota). The LUX cryostat was filled for the first time in the underground laboratory in February 2013. We report results of the first WIMP search data set, taken during the period from April to August 2013, presenting the analysis of 85.3 live days of data with a fiducial volume of 118 kg. A profile-likelihood analysis technique shows our data to be consistent with the background-only hypothesis, allowing 90% confidence limits to be set on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering with a minimum upper limit on the cross section of 7.6×10-46 cm2 at a WIMP mass of 33 GeV/c2. We find that the LUX data are in disagreement with low-mass WIMP signal interpretations of the results from several recent direct detection experiments. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract

We estimate the amount of $^{37}$Ar produced in natural xenon via cosmic ray-induced spallation, an inevitable consequence of the transportation and storage of xenon on the Earth's surface. We then calculate the resulting $^{37}$Ar concentration in a 10-tonne payload~(similar to that of the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment) assuming a representative schedule of xenon purification, storage and delivery to the underground facility. Using the spallation model by Silberberg and Tsao, the sea level production rate of $^{37}$Ar in natural xenon is estimated to be 0.024~atoms/kg/day. Assuming the xenon is successively purified to remove radioactive contaminants in 1-tonne batches at a rate of 1~tonne/month, the average $^{37}$Ar activity after 10~tonnes are purified and transported underground is 0.058--0.090~$\mu$Bq/kg, depending on the degree of argon removal during above-ground purification. Such cosmogenic $^{37}$Ar will appear as a noticeable background in the early science data, while decaying with a 35~day half-life. This newly-noticed production mechanism of $^{37}$Ar should be considered when planning for future liquid xenon-based experiments.

Abstract

High-resolution correlation of monotonous thin-bedded turbidites is desirable but usually difficult. Within the Eocene turbidites of the Hecho Group, South-Central Pyrenees, correlation has been facilitated by the occurrence of decimetre-thick, yellowish beds of micritic limestones and marlstones. These yellow beds (YB) are developed in the overbank deposits of major turbidite channel complexes (lower muddy stage), and occur at top of sandy deposits within the lowstand wedge of a third-order depositional sequence, as single or multiple beds related to high-frequency, fourth-order depositional cycles. The upper muddy stage, which comprises the rest of the lowstand systems tract, has no YB. The YB are interpreted as condensed sections where zones of burrowed and abundant planktonic and benthic microfossil assemblages are temporarily sustained by oxygen and nutriments delivered by turbidite discharges. The YB are, thus, reliable markers of the early lowstand wedge prograding complex, and coeval with initiation of delta restoration. Whole-rock and XRD data indicate that most YB contain detrital clay fraction and consistent excess of Fe, Mn, and P contents, which are ascribed to condensation driving redox relocations (hardground). YB are richer in calcite than the host claystones, indicating colonization by biogenic algal, and richer in dolomite. Dolomite varies in shape, zonation and chemistry ranging from early nearly pure to later more ferroan and formed under increasingly reducing, pre-compactional conditions. The 18OVPDB low values (–10.4 to –6.2 ‰) of Fe-dolomite that broadly correlates with calcite 18OVPDB (-8.1 to-5.6 ‰) suggest formation at higher temperature and/or isotopic re-equilibration with modified pore-water. Likewise, dolomite has more radiogenic 87Sr/86Sr (0.707926 and 0.707876) than ambient seawater, suggesting partial derivation from detrital aluminosilicates. Dolomitic YB have an outstanding potential as seals in the overbank deposits of major channel complexes, and their recognition demonstrates that the sequence stratigraphic framework relates to early diagenesis in this deep marine environment, thus providing a valuable tool for predicting deep reservoir properties.

Abstract

The LUX-ZEPLIN experiment is a dark matter detector centered on a dual-phase xenon time projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, USA. This Letter reports results from LUX-ZEPLIN's first search for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) with an exposure of 60 live days using a fiducial mass of 5.5 t. A profile-likelihood ratio analysis shows the data to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis, setting new limits on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon, spin-dependent WIMP-neutron, and spin-dependent WIMP-proton cross sections for WIMP masses above 9  GeV/c^{2}. The most stringent limit is set for spin-independent scattering at 36  GeV/c^{2}, rejecting cross sections above 9.2×10^{-48}  cm at the 90% confidence level.

27. Assessing the Virtual Social Networks Usage among Nursing Students: A Cross-Sectional Descriptive Study.

Abstract

Background: Nowadays, virtual social networks are among the most essential communication tools in the exchange of science, knowledge, and technology and are very popular among different peoples of the society, especially nursing students. They can also influence academic success. The present study was aimed to investigate the use of social networks among nursing students of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences., Materials and Methods: This study adopts a descriptive cross-sectional design and employed 406 nursing students in 2018 by means of the convenience sampling method. For data collection, a researcher-made questionnaire consisting of demographic characteristics and social network usage was used. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the data., Results: The mean (SD) of social networking usage was 116.81 (17.20) out of the achievable score range of 38 to 190, where the highest and lowest scores were related to dimensions of content sharing (73.56%) and unconventional issues (51.00%), respectively. There was a significant statistical relationship between total score of social networking usage which included the variables of grade point average (r = -0.17, p = 0.000), average daily study hours in non-exam periods (r = -0.10 and p < 0.04), family income (F 2,375 = 6.28, p < 0.001), number of siblings (F 4,350 = 4.98, p < 0.001), and academic semester (F 6,376 = 2.12, p < 0.05)., Conclusions: Given the high percentage of students enrolled and the aim of using these networks, proper planning for the management of cyberspace is necessary to take advantage of the benefits of social networks and reduce their disadvantages., Competing Interests: Nothing to declare., (Copyright: © 2021 Iranian Journal of Nursing and Midwifery Research.)

Abstract

The scattering of dark matter (DM) particles with sub-GeV masses off nuclei is difficult to detect using liquid xenon-based DM search instruments because the energy transfer during nuclear recoils is smaller than the typical detector threshold. However, the tree-level DM-nucleus scattering diagram can be accompanied by simultaneous emission of a bremsstrahlung photon or a so-called "Migdal" electron. These provide an electron recoil component to the experimental signature at higher energies than the corresponding nuclear recoil. The presence of this signature allows liquid xenon detectors to use both the scintillation and the ionization signals in the analysis where the nuclear recoil signal would not be otherwise visible. We report constraints on spin-independent DM-nucleon scattering for DM particles with masses of 0.4-5  GeV/c^{2} using 1.4×10^{4}  kg day of search exposure from the 2013 data from the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment for four different classes of mediators. This analysis extends the reach of liquid xenon-based DM search instruments to lower DM masses than has been achieved previously.

Abstract

The first searches for axions and axionlike particles with the Large Underground Xenon experiment are presented. Under the assumption of an axioelectric interaction in xenon, the coupling constant between axions and electrons g&#95;{Ae} is tested using data collected in 2013 with an exposure totaling 95 live days ×118  kg. A double-sided, profile likelihood ratio statistic test excludes g&#95;{Ae} larger than 3.5×10^{-12} (90% C.L.) for solar axions. Assuming the Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky theoretical description, the upper limit in coupling corresponds to an upper limit on axion mass of 0.12  eV/c^{2}, while for the Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zhakharov description masses above 36.6  eV/c^{2} are excluded. For galactic axionlike particles, values of g&#95;{Ae} larger than 4.2×10^{-13} are excluded for particle masses in the range 1-16  keV/c^{2}. These are the most stringent constraints to date for these interactions.

Abstract

We present experimental constraints on the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon elastic cross sections from the total 129.5  kg yr exposure acquired by the Large Underground Xenon experiment (LUX), operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota (USA). A profile likelihood ratio analysis allows 90% C.L. upper limits to be set on the WIMP-neutron (WIMP-proton) cross section of σ&#95;{n}=1.6×10^{-41}  cm^{2} (σ&#95;{p}=5×10^{-40}  cm^{2}) at 35  GeV c^{-2}, almost a sixfold improvement over the previous LUX spin-dependent results. The spin-dependent WIMP-neutron limit is the most sensitive constraint to date.

Abstract

We report constraints on spin-independent weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP)-nucleon scattering using a 3.35×10^{4}  kg day exposure of the Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment. A dual-phase xenon time projection chamber with 250 kg of active mass is operated at the Sanford Underground Research Facility under Lead, South Dakota (USA). With roughly fourfold improvement in sensitivity for high WIMP masses relative to our previous results, this search yields no evidence of WIMP nuclear recoils. At a WIMP mass of 50  GeV c^{-2}, WIMP-nucleon spin-independent cross sections above 2.2×10^{-46}  cm^{2} are excluded at the 90% confidence level. When combined with the previously reported LUX exposure, this exclusion strengthens to 1.1×10^{-46}  cm^{2} at 50  GeV c^{-2}.

Abstract

We present constraints on weakly interacting massive particles (WIMP)-nucleus scattering from the 2013 data of the Large Underground Xenon dark matter experiment, including 1.4×10^{4}  kg day of search exposure. This new analysis incorporates several advances: single-photon calibration at the scintillation wavelength, improved event-reconstruction algorithms, a revised background model including events originating on the detector walls in an enlarged fiducial volume, and new calibrations from decays of an injected tritium β source and from kinematically constrained nuclear recoils down to 1.1 keV. Sensitivity, especially to low-mass WIMPs, is enhanced compared to our previous results which modeled the signal only above a 3 keV minimum energy. Under standard dark matter halo assumptions and in the mass range above 4  GeV c^{-2}, these new results give the most stringent direct limits on the spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross section. The 90% C.L. upper limit has a minimum of 0.6 zb at 33  GeV c^{-2} WIMP mass.

Abstract

The Large Underground Xenon (LUX) experiment is a dual-phase xenon time-projection chamber operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (Lead, South Dakota). The LUX cryostat was filled for the first time in the underground laboratory in February 2013. We report results of the first WIMP search data set, taken during the period from April to August 2013, presenting the analysis of 85.3 live days of data with a fiducial volume of 118 kg. A profile-likelihood analysis technique shows our data to be consistent with the background-only hypothesis, allowing 90% confidence limits to be set on spin-independent WIMP-nucleon elastic scattering with a minimum upper limit on the cross section of 7.6 × 10(-46) cm(2) at a WIMP mass of 33 GeV/c(2). We find that the LUX data are in disagreement with low-mass WIMP signal interpretations of the results from several recent direct detection experiments.

Abstract

The present study investigated whether Schistosoma japonicum or Schistosoma bois could establish prenatally in lambs. Three ewes were exposed to S. japonicum by intramuscular injection of cercariae, and 3 ewes were exposed to S. bovis cercariae using the leg-emerging technique approximately 2 mo before delivery, and 1 age-matched pregnant ewe served as an uninfected control. The study lasted 18-20 wk after infection, which was 8-9 wk after delivery. All 6 exposed ewes became infected with either S. bovis or S. japonicum. Eight lambs were borne by the 7 ewes, of which 1 (S. bovis exposed) was dead and 1 (S. japonicum exposed) died at delivery. Of the 3 S. japonicum-exposed lambs, 2 were found infected. Four lambs born of S. bovis-exposed ewes were negative. Despite having no worms, these 4 S. bovis-exposed lambs as well as the 1 negative S. japonicum-exposed lamb had, in contrast to the nonexposed control lamb, few, but distinct, liver granulomas dominated by eosinophils and giant cells with large central necrotic areas but with no remnants of eggs or worms. Hence, congenital infection was demonstrated in S. japonicum-infected lambs, but not in S. bovis-infected ones.

35. Reproductive outcome after microsurgical treatment of tubal pregnancy in women with a single fallopian tube.

Abstract

Whether restoration of tubal function following conservative surgery for ectopic pregnancy was achieved can only be estimated in patients with a single tube. Between 1978 and 1983, 22 women with a tubal pregnancy in their single tube underwent conservative microsurgical treatment. In 18 women dorsal salpingotomy was performed, in 3 the tube was gently milked (squeezing the products of conception through the fimbria), and in 1 the segment containing the products of conception was excised and the tube anastomosed. Twenty-one patients desired pregnancy. The mean follow-up period was 21.4 months. Of the patients desiring pregnancy, 76% conceived. The intrauterine pregnancy rate was 47.6%, and the repeat ectopic pregnancy rate was 42.8%. This ectopic pregnancy rate was significantly higher than those quoted in recent literature. Although the study group was a very-high-risk group, restoration of tubal function was achieved in a high proportion of cases. The intrauterine pregnancy rate was high and higher than the best results available with in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, which is the only treatment available after bilateral salpingectomy. Therefore, conservative surgery is definitely indicated in such patients despite the high incidence of repeat ectopic pregnancy.

36. Reproductive performance following conservative microsurgical management of tubal pregnancy.

Abstract

Between 1981 and 1986, 58 women underwent conservative surgery for ectopic pregnancy; 30 had both tubes present, and 28 had the operation on their single tube. Twenty-five of the 30 women with both tubes present desired pregnancy; 17 (68%) conceived again, 14 (56%) had at least one intrauterine pregnancy and 3 (12%) had a repeat extrauterine pregnancy. Twenty-six of the women with a solitary tube desired pregnancy, 12 (46%) of them had at least one intrauterine pregnancy, and 10 (38.5%) had a repeat extrauterine pregnancy. It was concluded that the incidence of intrauterine pregnancy after conservative surgery in patients with both tubes present is not lower than after radical surgery, and that the incidence of extrauterine pregnancy is not higher. The intrauterine pregnancy rate in patients with a solitary tube is high and still higher than the best results available with in-vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. Therefore conservative surgery is indicated in these patients despite the high incidence of repeat extrauterine pregnancy. Since most of the patients who conceived did so during the first year following the operation, we recommend that patients try to conceive immediately.
