Abstract

Commissioning of the 4-GeV, 120-kW superconducting linac, an upgrade to the LCLS x-ray FEL at SLAC, began in summer 2022, by accelerating a beam through the first cryomodule to 100 MeV. This autumn the beam will accelerate along the full linac, pass through the bypass transport line above the copper linac, and end at a new high-power tune-up dump at the muon shield wall. The first beam through the undulators is expected by early 2023, at a rate well below the full 1 MHz. A new system of beam-loss detectors will provide radiation protection, machine protection, and diagnostics. Radiation-hard optical fibres span the full 4 km from the electron gun to the undulators and their beam dumps. Diamond detectors cover anticipated loss points. These replace ionization chambers previously used with the copper linac, due to concern about ion pile-up at high loss rates. Signals from the new detectors are integrated with a 500-ms time con-stant and compared to the allowed threshold. If this level is crossed, the beam stops within 0.2 ms. Abstract

For LCLS-II two undulators were installed at SLAC, one for soft and one for hard x-rays. Before the superconducting linac gets turned on the copper linac is providing beams at 120 Hz to these two beam destinations. The 120 Hz can be split in many different ratios between soft and hard via a pulsed magnet. To get an optimized beam for the quite different photon energies the pulsed linac components like modulators and RF can provide many different beam parameters, mainly energies and bunch lengths for the two undulator lines. 5. A Global Analysis of Light and Charge Yields in Liquid Xenon.

Abstract

We present an updated model of light and charge yields from nuclear recoils in liquid xenon with a simultaneously constrained parameter set. A global analysis is performed using measurements of electron and photon yields compiled from all available historical data, as well as measurements of the ratio of the two. These data sweep over energies from 1 - 300~\keV and external applied electric fields from 0 - 4060~\V/cm. The model is constrained by constructing global cost functions and using a simulated annealing algorithm and a Markov Chain Monte Carlo approach to optimize and find confidence intervals on all free parameters in the model. This analysis contrasts with previous work in that we do not unnecessarily exclude data sets nor impose artificially conservative assumptions, do not use spline functions, and reduce the number of parameters used in NEST v0.98. We report our results and the calculated best-fit charge and light yields. These quantities are crucial to understanding the response of liquid xenon detectors in the energy regime important for rare event searches such as the direct detection of dark matter particles. A multi-metal corrosion inhibitor was tested in potassium formate (HCOOK) solutions. The results showed that the inhibitor could provide full protection on mild steel, aluminum, copper, and brass, and good protection on soft solder. 8. A Potential Interaction Between Bisphosphonates and Osseointegration of Bone-Anchored Hearing Aid Implants Leading to Late Device Extrusion.

Abstract

Bisphosphonate therapy is commonly used to treat patients suffering from osteoporosis due to its clinical effectiveness and its generally benign safety profile; however, osteonecrosis of the jaw is a rare side effect that can occur in some patients. A far less elucidated area of concern is the effect of these medications on osseointegrated implants, which require adequate bone formation to ensure long-term viability of the implant. To date, there are no reports in the otolaryngology literature examining the interplay between osteoporosis, bisphosphonate therapy, and osseointegrated bone-anchored hearing aids (BAHA). In this case report, we describe an osteoporotic patient on bisphosphonates experiencing late bilateral failure of her osseointegrated BAHA implants shortly after starting therapy. Certainly, direct causality cannot be determined from this single report, but the temporal relationship described in this case suggests a potential interaction between bisphosphonate use and delayed failure of the osseointegrated hearing devices. 9. Controllable X-Ray Pulse Trains from Enhanced Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission.

Abstract

We report the demonstration of optical compression of an electron beam and the production of controllable trains of femtosecond, soft x-ray pulses with the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) free-electron laser (FEL). This is achieved by enhanced self-amplified spontaneous emission with a 2  μm laser and a dechirper device. Optical compression was achieved by modulating the energy of an electron beam with the laser and then compressing with a chicane, resulting in high current spikes on the beam which we observe to lase. A dechirper was then used to selectively control the lasing region of the electron beam. Field autocorrelation measurements indicate a train of pulses, and we find that the number of pulses within the train can be controlled (from 1 to 5 pulses) by varying the dechirper position and undulator taper. These results are a step toward attosecond spectroscopy with x-ray FELs as well as future FEL schemes relying on optical compression of an electron beam.
