9. A Structural Model of the Teaching Practice and Pro-Environmental Behavior in Elementary Mexican Students

Abstract

Almost four decades after having integrated environmental education in primary education in Mexico, it is important to prove the relationship between the environmental behavior shown by students and the environmental education they perceive, therefore, a structural equations model was designed and tested with information provided by 217 sixth grade students. The model showed regression coefficients between practice of environmental education and its causality directly and positively with values (0.035), skills (0.333), attitudes (0.269) and pro-environmental behavior (0.290). It is confirmed that the environmental education that is taught in a transversal way in schools is significant and that teaching practice should be promoted in the use of materials, institutional support and didactic resources focused on promoting environmental attitudes, skills and values in children.

Abstract

FUNDAMENTOS: Existen numerosos trabajos que relacionan la mortalidad con diferentes factores ambientales. Éstos se centran en la población general o en el grupo de personas mayores de 65 años, pero son escasos los que se refieren al grupo de 45 a 64 años, en el que la mortalidad tiene gran repercusión económica y social. El objeto del presente artículo es analizar la asociación existente entre la mortalidad diaria, tanto total como por diversas causas específicas, con la temperatura del aire en este grupo etario en la Comunidad de Madrid, de la cual las características climáticas extremas hacen especialmente interesante el trabajo. MÉTODOS: Se utiliza la modelización ARIMA según la metodología Box-Jenkins para el filtrado de las series de mortalidad diaria y de temperaturas. Entre los residuales se establecen funciones de correlación cruzada que permiten establecer una asociación entre las series eliminando los factores estacionales comunes, así como determinar el tiempo de desfase entre los extremos térmicos y los excesos de mortalidad. RESULTADOS: Existe una relación en forma de "V" entre la mortalidad diaria total y la temperatura. La mínima mortalidad se establece en una temperatura máxima diaria de 33ºC. La sobremortalidad por cada grado por debajo de 33ºC es del 0,8 %, mientras que por encima es del 3,0 %. Las funciones de correlación cruzada indican que esta asociación se da en los varones tanto por mortalidad total como por enfermedades circulatorias. En el caso de los altas temperaturas el efecto es inmediato, mientras que para las bajas hay que añadir otro efecto a los 10-13 días. CONCLUSIÓN: Existe una asociación estadísticamente significativa entre la mortalidad y los extremos térmicos en los varones de este grupo de edad. Los años potenciales de vida perdidos indican la magnitud del problema y la necesidad de articular medidas de prevención.

17. Analysis of Collaboration and Co-Citation Networks between Researchers Studying Violence Involving Women

Abstract

Introduction: We analyse the collaboration and co-citation networks at the international level in scientific articles about violence against women. The aim is to identify who are writing about this subject, if they are women and/or men, who the most influential authors are and which institutions they belong to, and finally which authors are cited most frequently. Method: As a source of information we have consulted the Web of Science database, from which we recovered and analysed a total of 8,448 articles. Analysis: We analysed a simple of 5,219 authors. For the social network analysis and the visualization of centrality measures, collaboration and co-citation we used the software programme Pajek. The collaboration density maps were visualised using VOSViewer. Results: A total of 8,448 publications were analysed, showcasing the authors with a higher collaboration and co-citation centrality as well as their gender. We also present most influential authors, their collaboration networks and the institutions to which they are affiliated. Conclusions: The results show that research into violence against women is led by women; they publish more articles than men; they collaborate more closely; they hold positions that enable them to channel and disseminate flows of information and collaboration groups; and they have closer links to other authors.

23. Comparación entre el uso de drenaje subdural y subgaleal en tratamiento del hematoma subdural crónico.

Abstract

El hematoma subdural crónico (HSDc) es una de las afecciones más comunes en nuestra práctica diaria. El tratamiento estándar es la evacuación mediante trépano y la colocación de drenaje subdural, el cual ha demostrado disminuir su recurrencia. Sin embargo, este procedimiento puede conllevar riesgos, como el daño al parénquima, la infección o la aparición de crisis comiciales, por lo que el drenaje subgaleal se plantea como una alternativa. Nuestro objetivo es comparar el uso de drenaje subdural y subgaleal en una serie de pacientes con HSDc intervenidos, así como analizar las diferencias tanto en tasa de complicaciones como de recidiva entre ambos grupos. Se realiza un estudio observacional analítico retrospectivo en el que se analizan 152 pacientes con diagnóstico de HSDc intervenidos en nuestro centro desde enero de 2020 hasta abril de 2022. Se excluyeron aquellos pacientes en los que no se colocó drenaje. En todos los pacientes se realizó un trépano y se colocó el tipo de drenaje a elección del neurocirujano. De los 152 pacientes, en 80 se utilizó drenaje subdural (52,63%) y en 72 drenaje subgaleal (47,37%). No hubo diferencias significativas ni en la tasa de recidiva (30%) en el grupo de drenaje subdural vs. 20,83%) en el grupo de drenaje subgaleal; p = 0,134), ni en la de complicaciones (7,5% en el grupo de drenaje subdural vs. 5,5% en el grupo de drenaje subgaleal; p = 0,749). El drenaje subgaleal presenta los mismos resultados clínicos con un índice de recidivas y de complicaciones similar al drenaje subdural, por lo que se plantea como una opción segura y eficaz al drenaje subdural en el tratamiento del HSDc. Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is one of the most common pathologies in our daily practice. The standard treatment is the evacuation making a burr-hole and placement of a subdural drainage, which has shown to decrease its recurrence. However, this procedure can entail risks such as parenchymal damage, infection, or the onset of seizures, prompting the consideration of subgaleal drainage as an alternative. Our objective is to compare the use of subdural and subgaleal drainage in a cohort of patients undergoing intervention for CSDH, as well as to analyze the differences in complication rates and recurrence between the two groups. A retrospective analytical observational study was conducted, analyzing 152 patients diagnosed with CSDH who underwent intervention at our center from January 2020 to April 2022. Patients in whom drainage was not placed were excluded. In all patients, a burr-hole was performed and the type of drainage was chosen by the neurosurgeon. Out of the 152 patients, subdural drainage was placed in 80 cases (52.63%), while subgaleal drainage was used in 72 cases (47.37%). There were no significant differences in the recurrence rate (30% in the subdural drainage group vs. 20.83% in the subgaleal drainage group; P =.134) or in the complication rate (7.5% in the subdural drainage group vs. 5.5% in the subgaleal drainage group; P =.749). Subgaleal drainage shows similar clinical outcomes with a recurrence and complication rate comparable to subdural drainage, suggesting it as a safe and effective alternative to subdural drainage in the treatment of CSDH. 39. Jazz Aesthetics and the Democratic Imperative in Education: A Dialogue

Abstract

What appeared decades ago as solely a European model--Thatcherism--is now a global trend with no apparent end in sight. Neoliberalism in the public sector, and within the educational sphere particularly, pervades within a larger pattern of hegemonic ideologies. In sum, market forces and global capitalism make it quite difficult for public education, both nationally and internationally, to retain its democratic ethos, the historical aim of common schools. Is there an antidote to corporate, global capitalism ideologies undermining the democratic aims and the common good in public education? In this article the authors assert that, indeed, there are discursive spaces where scholars and citizens can turn. One space is the arts, especially jazz. In jazz the discursive, social practices of improvisation, call and response and the tradition of "standing on the shoulders of those who came before you" (honoring elders) facilitate deep democracy. This article borrows both from the metaphors and discursive practices of jazz, including improvisation and the habits of mind fostering deep listening and hearing one's fellow combo members. The authors argue that as in jazz, education can embrace and return to its democratic impulses. In so doing the consumers of public education--students, families, and local communities, can systematically resist the destructive consequences of neoliberalism. Moreover by embracing the aesthetic of jazz in public education, consumers can exploit the concomitant the more constructive opportunities of the ideologies of neoliberalism, namely innovation, creative autonomy, and individual liberty. In the end civility in public discourse is rendered possible by such an aesthetic move. The authors welcome dialogue and debate on their arguments.

This piece is a condensed overview of a qualitative study that took place during the 2010-11 academic year.

Abstract

The dinoflagellate Amphidinium carterae is a promising source of unique bioactive compounds with potential applications in diverse industries. Abiotic strategies for increasing bioactive cell quota have been preferred for cost-effectiveness, controllability, and existing knowledge. The supernatants of Heterosigma akashiwo and Pavlova sp. enhanced haemolytic activity of A. carterae by 2.3 times and improved its final biomass by 10 % when added to the growth medium. Prymnesium parvum supernatant increased the total lipid content of A. carterae by 50 %, while Pleurochrysis roscoffensis supernatant boosted its total carotenoid content by 40 %. This study demonstrated a rapid screening strategy for evaluating growth responses and highlights the potential of using allelopathic strategies to enhance bioactive metabolite production. Utilizing supernatants for the formulation of growth media fosters a circular economy by repurposing resources, minimizing waste, and promoting sustainability in the microalgal biotechnological industry.
