Abstract Van der Waals (vdW) ferroelectric CuInP2S6 (CIPS) has great potential in post‐Moore's law electronics owing to their advantages of weak interlayer interaction, stable surface with free dangling bonds, and robust switchable spontaneous polarization. The flexoelectric effect is demonstrated as an alternative switching method for the design of ferroelectric domains in layered vdW CIPS. However, the investigation of the correlation between the polarization and elastic properties remains indistinct. Here, an elastic evolution is explored experimentally and theoretically in layered vdW CIPS with temperature, of which Young's modulus (EYoung) is determined by analyzing the force‐indentation responses of vdW ferroelectric CIPS. Interestingly, an anomalous leap in EYoung of CIPS from 35 to 65 GPa occurs when the temperature rises across the Curie temperature TC of ≈315 K. Deep potential molecular dynamic (DPMD) simulations identify that this abnormal behavior can be attributed to temperature‐dependent change of copper distribution and the local copper dynamic hopping, intertwined with the order‐disorder ferroelectric phase transition, which is quite different from the typical decrease of EYoung in the lattice constant due to temperature increasing. The exploration provides an important reference for the analysis of coupled mechanical properties and ferroelectricity in CIPS and its applications in flexible electronics.

Abstract Two‐dimensional material‐based field‐effect transistors (2DM‐FETs) are playing a revolutionary role in electronic devices. However, before electronic design automation (EDA) for 2DM‐FETs can be achieved, it remains necessary to determine how to incorporate contact transports into model. Reported methods compromise between physical intelligibility and model compactness due to the heterojunction nature. To address this, quasi‐Fermi‐level phase space theory (QFLPS) is generalized to incorporate contact transports using the Landauer formula. It turns out that the Landauer‐QFLPS model effectively overcomes the issue of concern. The proposed new formula can describe 2DM‐FETs with Schottky or Ohmic contacts with superior accuracy and efficiency over previous methods, especially when describing non‐monotonic drain conductance characteristics. A three‐bit threshold inverter quantizer (TIQ) circuit is fabricated using ambipolar black phosphorus and it is demonstrated that the model accurately predicts circuit performance. The model could be very effective and valuable in the development of 2DM‐FET‐based integrated circuits.

The gum acacia Senegalia senegal (L.) Britton (Fabales: Fabaceae) is a drought-tolerant plant belonging to the genus Acacia of the Leguminosae family, possessing significant economic and ecological value. Despite its importance, there is a knowledge gap regarding the potential impact of climate change on the distribution of S. senegal, crucial for the conservation of plant resources and optimizing its use in introductory silviculture. In this study, we selected 23 environmental variables and utilized the optimized maximum entropy (MaxEnt) model to analyze the key environmental factors affecting the distribution of S. senegal worldwide and simulate the current and future distribution range of S. senegal in Pakistan under the SSP1-2.6, SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, and SSP5-8.5 climate change scenarios. The results highlight key environmental factors influencing the distribution of S. senegal, including BIO3 (isothermally), BIO4 (coefficient of seasonal variation of temperature), BIO11 (mean temperature of the coldest season), and BIO12 (annual precipitation). Regions with higher and less fluctuating temperatures exhibit a higher potential for S. senegal distribution. Currently, suitable habitats of S. senegal are concentrated in the southern region of Pakistan, covering provinces such as Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan, with highly suitable habitats accounting for 6.06% of the total area. Under the current climatic conditions, this study identifies the spatial patterns of suitable habitats and their concentration in specific regions. With climate change, a notable expansion of suitable habitats towards higher latitudes is observed, with the most significant expansion under the extremely severe climate change scenario (SSP5-8.5), reaching 223.45% of the current level. The results of this study enhance our understanding of the dynamics of S. senegal distribution under climate change and offer valuable insights into the long-term introduction of S. senegal for afforestation and soil conservation in Pakistan. This study provides theoretical support for the sustainable development of the local ecosystem and socio-economy, emphasizing the importance of proactive measures to adapt to changing climatic conditions.

Friction stir welding (FSW) has been considered ideal for aluminum alloy structures. The performance of FSW joints under unidirectional stress state has been widely tested, but there is still a lack of experimental data under a biaxial stress state. For accurate characterization of the mechanical properties of 2219 aluminum alloy FSW joints under a biaxial stress state, this article conducted biaxial tests. The FSW joint was tested using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to obtain its microscopic properties and obtain the partition results of the welded joint. The stress–strain relationship and yield characteristics of welded joints under different loading ratios were studied using biaxial tensile tests of cruciform specimens combined with digital image correlation technology. By comparing it with the existing yield criteria, the yield criterion suitable for FSW joints of 2219 aluminum alloy under a biaxial tensile load was determined.

The Camellia oleifera industry is hindered by the substandard quality of its fruits and the low yield of camellia seed oil. Although soil factors have been shown to affect the productivity of this plant, the relationship between C. oleifera characteristics and soil properties and nutrients remains unclear. Therefore, we investigated soil factors within the central distribution area of this species. Our findings revealed that this plant thrives in acidic soils with a medium cation exchange capacity. There were moderate differences in the main and medium element contents in the soils, while the variation of microelements was significant. Overall, C. oleifera cultivated soils were poor, with an uneven distribution of soil nutrients. Most of the shape characteristics of camellia fruits showed moderate variability, whereas dry kernel rate and oil content exhibited minor variability. The fatty acid profiles remained stable across different planting sites, but there were higher variations in the content of active compounds. Fruit shape characteristics were primarily influenced by soil properties, while soil nutrients mainly affected the seeds and kernels of the fruit. Minor fatty acid content could be influenced by soil properties and nutrients, except for total nitrogen (TN), which specifically affected the content of palmitic acid and oleic acid. There was no significant correlation between soil factors and sterols, polyphenols, and tocopherols, while squalene was affected by soil properties. Our study highlights the importance of considering soil properties and nutrients in the cultivation of C. oleifera and emphasizes the need for rational fertilizer application.

Repairing and regenerating injured neural tissue remains a worldwide challenge. Tissue engineering (TE) has been highlighted as a potential solution to provide functional substitutes for damaged organs or tissue. Among the biocompatible and biodegradable materials, poly-L-lactic-acid (PLLA) has been widely investigated in the TE field because of its tunable mechanical properties and tailorable surface functionalization. PLLA-based biomaterials can be engineered as scaffolds that mimic neural tissue extracellular matrix and modulate inflammatory responses. With technological advances, PLLA-based scaffolds can also have well-controlled three-dimensional sizes and structures to facilitate neurite extension. Furthermore, PLLA-based scaffolds have the potential to be used as drug-delivery carriers with controlled release. Moreover, owing to the good piezoelectric properties and capacity to carry conductive polymers, PLLA-based scaffolds can be combined with electrical stimulation to maintain stemness and promote axonal guidance. This mini-review summarizes and discusses the fabrication and modification techniques utilized in the PLLA-based biomaterial scaffolds for neural TE. Recent applications in peripheral nerve and spinal cord regeneration are also presented, and it is hoped that this will guide the future development of more effective and multifunctional PLLA-based nerve scaffolds.

Cistanche salsa (C. A. Mey.) G. Beck, a holoparasitic desert medicine plant with multiple hosts, is regarded as a potential future desert economic plant. However, as a result of excessive exploitation and poaching, its wild resources have become scarce. Thus, before developing its desert economic value, this plant has to be protected, and the identification of its natural reserve is currently the top priority. However, in previous nature reserve prediction studies, the influence of host plants has been overlooked, particularly in holoparasitic plants with multiple hosts. In this study, we sought to identify the conservation areas of wild C. salsa by considering multiple host–plant interactions and climate change conditions using the MaxEnt model. Additionally, a Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to reduce the autocorrelation between environmental variables. The effects of the natural distribution of the host plants in terms of natural distribution from the perspective of niche similarities and extrapolation detection were considered by filtering the most influential hosts: Krascheninnikovia ceratoides (Linnaeus), Gueldenstaedt, and Nitraria sibirica Pall. Additionally, the change trends in these hosts based on climate change conditions combined with the change trends in C. salsa were used to identify a core protection area of 126483.5 km2. In this article, we corrected and tried to avoid some of the common mistakes found in species distribution models based on the findings of previous research and fully considered the effects of host plants for multiple-host holoparasitic plants to provide a new perspective on the prediction of holoparasitic plants and to provide scientific zoning for biodiversity conservation in desert ecosystems. This research will hopefully serve as a significant reference for decision-makers.

TC4 alloy is widely used in dental implantation due to its excellent biocompatibility and low density. However, it is necessary to further improve the corrosion resistance and surface hardness of the titanium alloy to prevent surface damage that could result in the release of metal ions into the oral cavity, potentially affecting oral health. In this study, Ti-N-O layers were fabricated on the surface of TC4 alloy using a two-step hollow cathode plasma source oxynitriding technique. This resulted in the formation of TiN, Ti2N, TiO2, and nitrogen-stabilized α(N)-Ti phases on the TC4 alloy, forming a Ti-N-O modified layer. The microhardness of the samples treated with plasma oxynitriding (PNO) was found to be 300–400% higher than that of untreated (UN) samples. The experimental conditions were set at 520 °C, and the corrosion current density of the PNO sample was measured to be 7.65 × 10−8 A/cm2, which is two orders of magnitude lower than that of the UN sample. This indicates that the PNO-treated TC4 alloy exhibited significantly improved corrosion resistance in the artificial saliva solutions.

Abstract Background Toll‐like receptor 4 (TLR4) participates in the initiation of neuroinflammation in various neurological diseases, including central nervous system injuries. NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome‐mediated microglial pyroptosis is crucial for the inflammatory response during secondary spinal cord injury (SCI). However, the underlying mechanism by which TLR4 regulates NLRP3 inflammasome activation and microglial pyroptosis after SCI remains uncertain. Methods We established an in vivo mouse model of SCI using TLR4‐knockout (TLR4‐KO) and wild‐type (WT) mice. The levels of pyroptosis, tissue damage and neurological function recovery were evaluated in the three groups (Sham, SCI, SCI‐TLR4‐KO). To identify differentially expressed proteins, tandem mass tag (TMT)‐based proteomics was conducted using spinal cord tissue between TLR4‐KO and WT mice after SCI. For our in vitro model, mouse microglial BV2 cells were exposed to lipopolysaccharides (1 µg/ml, 8 h) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) (5 mM, 2 h) to induce pyroptosis. A series of molecular biological experiments, including Western blot (WB), real‐time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT‐qPCR), enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), immunofluorescence (IF), immunohistochemical (IHC), chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP), Dual‐Luciferase Reporter assay (DLA) and co‐immunoprecipitation (Co‐IP), were performed to explore the specific mechanism of microglial pyroptosis in vivo and in vitro. Results Our results indicated that TLR4 promoted the expression of dead‐box helicase 3 X‐linked (DDX3X), which mediated NLRP3 inflammasome activation and microglial pyroptosis after SCI. Further analysis revealed that TLR4 upregulated the DDX3X/NLRP3 axis by activating the JAK2/STAT1 signalling pathway, and importantly, STAT1 was identified as a transcription factor promoting DDX3X expression. In addition, we found that biglycan was increased after SCI and interacted with TLR4 to jointly regulate microglial pyroptosis through the JAK2/STAT1/DDX3X/NLRP3 axis after SCI. Conclusion Our study preliminarily identified a novel mechanism by which TLR4 regulates NLRP3 inflammasome‐mediated microglial pyroptosis in response to SCI—providing a novel and promising therapeutic target for SCI.

Ti6Al4V titanium alloys, with high specific strength and good biological compatibility with the human body, are ideal materials for medical surgical implants. However, Ti6Al4V titanium alloys are prone to corrosion in the human environment, which affects the service life of implants and harms human health. In this work, hollow cathode plasm source nitriding (HCPSN) was used to generate nitrided layers on the surfaces of Ti6Al4V titanium alloys to improve their corrosion resistance. Ti6Al4V titanium alloys were nitrided in NH3 at 510 °C for 0, 1, 2, and 4 h. The microstructure and phase composition of the Ti-N nitriding layer was characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. This modified layer was identified to be composed of TiN, Ti2N, and α-Ti (N) phase. To study the corrosion properties of different phases, the nitriding 4 h samples were mechanically ground and polished to obtain the various surfaces of Ti2N and α-Ti (N) phases. The potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance measurements were conducted in Hank’s solution to characterize the corrosion resistance of Ti-N nitriding layers in the human environment. The relationship between corrosion resistance and the microstructure of the Ti-N nitriding layer was discussed. The new Ti-N nitriding layer that can improve corrosion resistance provides a broader prospect for applying Ti6Al4V titanium alloy in the medical field.

The discovery of ferroelectricity in hafnium zirconium oxide (HZO) thin films has attracted wide attention from academia to industry due to the application in ferroelectric non-volatile random access memories (FeRAM) with prominent performance in scalability and CMOS process compatibility. Dielectric behavior of ferroelectric HZO thin films is a key factor affecting the dynamic effect, piezoelectric and electrostrictive effect. Interface between HZO and capping electrodes plays an important role in regulating the dielectric properties. In this paper, the impedance frequency response and dielectric spectrum of ferroelectric HZO thin films were analyzed. Parameters of the interface were extracted to analyze the regulating effect on the dielectric properties based on an impedance model with constant phase element (CPE). Besides, dielectric spectrums at elevated temperatures were identified to verify this analysis.

CrFeCoNi and CrMnFeCoNi coatings were prepared by laser remelting method. The grain boundary characteristics distribution of both coatings was investigated by electron backscattered diffraction technique. The results showed that the CrFeCoNi coating exhibited higher fraction of low angle grain boundaries and Σ3 boundaries compared to the CrMnFeCoNi coating. The corrosion properties of the CrFeCoNi and CrMnFeCoNi coatings in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were identified by electrochemical method and localized electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. The results indicated that the CrFeCoNi coating had a higher corrosion resistance than the CrMnFeCoNi coating. The better corrosion resistance of the CrFeCoNi coating could be attributed to the high fraction of Σ3 boundaries and low fraction of the high angle boundaries.

Saccharopolyspora erythraea is considered to be an effective host for erythromycin. However, little is known about the regulation in terms of its metabolism. To develop an accurate model-driven strategy for the efficient production of erythromycin, a genome-scale metabolic model (iJL1426) was reconstructed for the industrial strain. The final model included 1426 genes, 1858 reactions, and 1687 metabolites. The accurate rates of the growth predictions for the 27 carbon and 31 nitrogen sources available were 92.6% and 100%, respectively. Moreover, the simulation results were consistent with the physiological observation and 13C metabolic flux analysis obtained from the experimental data. Furthermore, by comparing the single knockout targets with earlier published results, four genes coincided within the range of successful knockouts. Finally, iJL1426 was used to guide the optimal addition strategy of n-propanol during industrial erythromycin fermentation to demonstrate its ability. The experimental results showed that the highest erythromycin titer was 1442.8 μg/mL at an n-propanol supplementation rate of 0.05 g/L/h, which was 45.0% higher than that without n-propanol supplementation, and the erythromycin-specific synthesis rate was also increased by 30.3%. Therefore, iJL1426 will lead to a better understanding of the metabolic capabilities and, thus, is helpful in a systematic metabolic engineering approach.

The CrFeCoNi coating was fabricated by the laser remelting method. The microstructure of the coating was detected. The corrosion behavior of coating at different temperatures was investigated by electrochemical measurements. Potentiodynamic polarization test results indicated that the corrosion current density increased with the increase in corrosion solution temperature in 3.5 wt% NaCl and 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solutions, suggesting that the CrFeCoNi coating exhibited higher resistance to corrosion attack at lower solution temperature. The breakdown potential of the CrFeCoNi coating exhibited a decreasing trend with increasing solution temperature in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. This indicated that the passive film formed at low temperatures had higher stability. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy test indicated that the CrFeCoNi coating possessed higher charge transfer resistance at lower solution temperatures. The corrosion mechanisms of the coating at different temperatures were also revealed.

Abstract Ferroelectric memories with ultralow‐power‐consumption are attracting a great deal of interest with the ever‐increasing demand for information storage in wearable electronics. However, sufficient scalability, semiconducting compatibility, and robust flexibility of the ferroelectric memories remain great challenges, e.g., owing to Pb‐containing materials, oxide electrode, and limited thermal stability. Here, high‐performance flexible nonvolatile memories based on ferroelectric Hf0.5Zr0.5O2 (HZO) via quasi‐van der Waals heteroepitaxy are reported. The flexible ferroelectric HZO exhibits not only high remanent polarization up to 32.6 µC cm−2 without a wake‐up effect during cycling, but also remarkably robust mechanical properties, degradation‐free retention, and endurance performance under a series of bent deformations and cycling tests. Intriguingly, using HZO as a gate, flexible ferroelectric thin‐film transistors with a low operating voltage of ±3 V, high on/off ratio of 6.5 × 105, and a small subthreshold slope of about 100 mV dec−1, which outperform reported flexible ferroelectric transistors, are demonstrated. The results make ferroelectric HZO a promising candidate for the next‐generation of wearable, low‐power, and nonvolatile memories with manufacturability and scalability.

Cistanche deserticola Ma is a traditional Chinese medicinal plant exclusively parasitizing on the roots of Haloxylon ammodendron (C. A. Mey.) Bunge and H. Persicum Bunge ex Boiss and the primary cultivated crop of the desert economy. Its wild resources became scarce due to over-exploitation and poaching for economic benefits. To protect the biological diversity of the desert Haloxylon–Cistanche community forest, the optimal combination of desert ecology and economy industry, and their future survival, this paper examines the conservation areas of wild C. deserticola from the perspective of hosts’ effects and climate changes. To identify conservation areas, the potential distributions generated by MaxEnt in two strategies (AH: abiotic and hosts factors; HO: hosts factors only) compare the model’s performance, the niche range overlap, and the changing trend in climate changes. The results show the following: (1) The HO strategy is more suitable for prediction and identifying the core conservation areas in hosts and climate changes (indirectly affected by host distributions) for C. deserticola. (2) The low-suitable habitat and the medium-suitable habitat are both sensitive to the climate changes; the reduction reaches 48.2% (SSP585, 2081–2100) and 26.6%(SSP370, 2081–2100), respectively. The highly suitable habitat is always in growth, with growth reaching 27.3% (SSP585, 2081–2100). (3) Core conservation areas and agriculture and education areas are 317,315.118 km2 and 319,489.874 km2, respectively. This study developed a predictive model for Maxent under climate change scenarios by limiting host and abiotic factors and inverted the natural habitat of C. deserticola to provide scientific zoning for biodiversity conservation in desert Haloxylon–Cistanche community forests systems, providing an effective reference for decision makers.

Abstract Background Immune activation, specifically activation of macrophages and resident microglia, leading to inflammation is a key component in the progression of spinal cord injury (SCI). Macrophages/microglia exist in two states—the classically activated M1 phenotype that confers pro-inflammatory effects or the alternatively activated M2 phenotype that confers anti-inflammatory effects. Ecto-5′-nucleotidase (CD73) is an immunosuppressive molecule intricately involved in adaptive and innate immune responses and is able to dephosphorylate AMP to adenosine. However, it is not known if CD73 is able to modulate the macrophages/microglia transformation between the M1 and M2 phenotypes. Methods We used gene-deficient mice to determine the role of CD73 in macrophages/microglia polarization post-SCI in vivo. We used small interference RNA (siRNA) or pcDNA3.1 to inhibit or overexpress CD73 in BV2 cells to verify anterior discovery in vitro. A combination of molecular and histological methods was used to detect the macrophages/microglia polarization and explore the mechanism both in vivo and in vitro. Results We found that SCI induced the upregulation of CD73 expression. CD73 deficient mice were noted to demonstrate overwhelming immune responses, few anti-inflammatory phenotype macrophages/microglia, and had a poorer locomotor recovery in comparison to wild-type mice that were also inflicted with SCI. In vitro studies found that CD73 suppression inhibited the expression of characteristic microglial anti-inflammatory polarization markers in BV2 cells, while the converse was noted in CD73 overexpression. Subsequent experiments confirmed that CD73 promoted microglia alternative activation by stimulating p38 MAPK. Conclusion We were able to conclude that CD73 imparts neuroprotective effects by mediating macrophages/microglia polarization. These findings allow for better understanding of the modulatory factors involved in triggering the change in macrophages/microglia phenotypes, therefore uncovering additional molecules and pathways that may be targeted in the innovation of novel SCI therapies.

Abstract Background Magnesium (Mg) released from Mg-based implants degradation is believed to be effective in improving osteogenesis, however, studies focusing on Mg-based interbody cages are limited and fusion success was never reported. As excessive Mg accumulation can inhibit new bone formation, this study is designed to explain the possible reasons for the fusion failure of Mg-based cages by analyzing the relationships between the intervertebral Mg accumulation and the resulting interbody fusion. Methods The experimental cage was consisted of magnesium alloy (AZ31) substrate and Silicon (Si) -containing coating. C3/C4 and C5/C6 of 24 goats were implanted with cage or autologous iliac crest bone graft (Control group), which were analyzed at 3, 6, 12, and 24 weeks post-operatively. Intervertebral Mg concentrations, Mg-related Calcium (Ca)/ Phosphorus (P) ratios, radiological evaluations and histological findings were recorded for analyzing the relationships between the three of cage corrosion, Mg accumulation, and interbody fusion. Results Intervertebral Mg levels were significantly increased after cage implantation, especially in the areas that were closer to the cages at 3 weeks post-operatively, and these increased concentrations could persist up to 12 weeks post-operatively, indicating a relatively rapid corrosion process. Significantly lower Mg levels were only found at 24 weeks post-operatively, but these levels were still higher than those of the control group. In addition, Mg was found to be widely distributed at the intervertebral space since high Mg concentrations could even be detected at the posterior boundary of the vertebral body. Under this Mg accumulation profile, interbody fusion was not achieved, as indicated by the decreased Ca/P ratios, low CT fusion scores and negative histological results. Conclusions Intervertebral excessive Mg accumulation might be the primary reason for interbody fusion failure. Quantitative Mg analysis can offer insight into the association between cage degeneration and biological response.

Context: Salinomycin (SAL) is a chemotherapeutic drug with anti-osteosarcoma efficacy, but its hydrophobic properties have hindered its application. Nanoparticles have been widely used as drug carriers to improve the solubility of hydrophobic drugs. The dodecapeptide GE11 has been shown to have great binding affinity to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), which is highly overexpressed in osteosarcoma. Materials and Methods: We designed novel SAL-loaded GE11-conjugated polymer–lipid hybrid nanoparticles (GE11-NPs-SAL) to target osteosarcoma. The characterization and antitumor activity of GE11-NPs-SAL were evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. Results: The results showed that GE11-NPs-SAL had a size of ~100 nm with a high encapsulation efficacy of ~80%. Compared with the non-targeted nanoparticles, GE11-NPs-SAL showed increased internalization in osteosarcoma cells and improved therapeutic efficacy in osteosarcoma both in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions: GE11-NPs-SAL is a promising treatment for osteosarcoma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study is a continuation and complement of our former in vivo study of Sirt1 and its role in puncture-induced rodent disc degeneration model.Methods: Sirt1 protein expression level and histological morphology were evaluated in the discs of different degeneration levels, which is graded according to the Pfirrmann grading scale. Then the mRNA and protein expression levels of type II collagen, MMP-13, ADAMTS-5, p21, p16, cell proliferation, and apoptosis ratio were tested in vitro nucleus pulposus cells that expressed different levels of Sirt1 by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, western blot analysis, CCK-8 assay, and flow cytometry analysis.Results: Sirt1 protein expression level decreased in the discs of high Pfirrmann grade and the score of histological morphology of human intervertebral disc is consistent with the Pfirrmann grade. Besides, when resveratrol activated Sirt1, nucleus pulposus cells proliferation increased while the cell apoptosis ratio decreased; the expression of type II collagen increased while MMP-13, ADAMTS-5 decreased. It showed the opposite results when the cells were transfected by Sirt1 siRNA. In addition, the expression of both p21 and p16 decreased when Sirt1 was activated.Conclusion: Sirt1 is a protective mediator in IVD degeneration and the expression of Sirt1 decreases in degenerative disc. Objective: To evaluate the forward shifting of cervical spinal cords in different segments of patients with Hirayama disease to determine whether the disease is self-limiting. Methods: This study was performed on 11 healthy subjects and 64 patients. According to the duration, the patients were divided into 5 groups (≤1 year, 1-2 years, 2-3 years, 3-4 years, and ≥ 4 years). Cervical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of flexion and conventional position was performed. The distances between the posterior edge of the spinal cord and the cervical spinal canal (X), the anterior and posterior wall of the cervical spinal canal (Y), and the anterior-posterior (A) and the transverse diameter (B) of spinal cord cross sections were measured at different cervical spinal segments (C4 to T1). Results: In cervical flexion position, a significant increase in X/Y of C4-5 segments was found in groups 2-5, the C5-6 and C6-7 segments in groups 1-5, and the C7-T1 segments in group 5 (P < 0.05). The degree of the increased X/Y and cervical flexion X/Y of C5-6 segments were different among the 5 groups (P < 0.05), which was likely due to rapid increases in X/Y during the course of Hirayama's disease. PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) and ground calcium carbonate have been widely used in alkaline papermaking. Unfortunately, although increasing filler level in papers can improve the paper properties such as brightness, opacity, stiffness gloss, smoothness, porosity, and printability, as well as decrease cost, some strength of the paper is negatively affected. In this research, needle-like aragonite was synthesized using Ca(OH)2 and CO2 as reactants in the presence of MgCl2 and characterized with scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The physical and optical properties of the paper handsheets containing these needle-like aragonite fillers were evaluated. Results indicated that tensile strength, Z-direction tensile strength and folding endurance of the paper were improved by the needle-like aragonite crystals compared to the paper using commercial PCC (precipitated calcium carbonate) as filler. The stiffness of the paper handsheet on the machine direction was increased, but no evident difference in the cross direction was found. The improvement of paper strength mainly resulted from the twining effect between the aragonite whiskers and paper fibers. The optical properties of the paper were slightly decreased with the use of the needle-like aragonites compared to commercial PCC. These results suggest that paper cost can be decreased by increasing the content of needle-like aragonite filler while paper strength will not be decreased compared to PCC filler. Much attention has been paid to the processing of inorganic whisker, especially calcium carbonate whisker, which can be used as reinforcement materials of polymer composite due to its low price. Unfortunately, the present synthesis technique of calcium carbonate whisker starts from calcinations of limestone, which involves high energy consumption and furthermore is a highly environment polluting reaction. In this report, needle-like aragonite was synthesized with a reversible solution reaction from limestone without calcination. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques were used to characterize the morphology and crystal structure of intermediates as well as that of the product, aragonite. GCC (grinding calcium carbonate) powder was dissolved in an aqueous solution of magnesium sulfate with reflux and air flush. EDTA titration was used to evaluate reaction rate of the dissolution. A kinetics equation of the dissolution reaction was constructed, which displayed second-order kinetics with respect to the concentration of magnesium sulfate. A rate constant of 0.0015 l–3 · mol–1 · h–1 was obtained. The dissolution reaction gave fiber-like magnesium hydroxide sulfate and gypsum crystal. Then needle-like aragonite with a length of 9.13 ± 1.02 μm and an aspect ratio of 5.64 ± 1.37 was synthesized from the dissolution product with CO2 bubbling at 70°C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
