Research Findings: Conversing abstract concepts boost children's language learning. Despite the numerous studies on the linguistic environment of early childhood education settings (ECE), most of this work disregards contextual factors that may influence abstract conversations and omits characteristics of children's verbal participation in these interactions. We examined how preschool classroom contexts influenced the abstraction level of children's conversations and how the context and conversational partners' language influenced children's verbal participation. We analyzed 2,928 utterances in 453 natural teacher and peer conversations during a one-week period in a preschool classroom. Bayesian analysis showed that children and teachers used significantly more abstract talk in small-group activities coded as math and science than other coded settings. Moreover, Bayesian analysis revealed that the abstraction level of conversational partners' turns influenced that of children's talk beyond the characteristics of the context. Interestingly, this association was moderated by the partner (teacher or peer). Practice or Policy: The inconsistent association between measurements of ECE quality and children's outcomes invites practitioners to reevaluate what these measurements should assess. This study suggests the need to pay greater attention to the features of ECE settings that are conducive to children's development, such as learning materials, grouping, and peer interactions.

Research Findings: The global COVID-19 pandemic prevented the implementation of in-person summer learning programs designed to improve school readiness for entering kindergartners. Thus, we conducted the current study examining the feasibility, social validity, and preliminary impacts of a virtual summer learning program. Ninety-one preschoolers and their caregivers participated in a 4-week program involving one weekly teacher-caregiver meeting, two weekly Watch Together home learning activities, two weekly Play Together home learning activities, one or two weekly Read Together home learning activities, and one or two weekly teacher-child video chat lessons. Recruitment and participation indicated high levels of interest. Caregivers reported high levels of satisfaction with the program and teachers reported moderate to high levels of child engagement during video chat lessons. Children showed significant gains on emotion knowledge, patterning, and alphabet knowledge. Practice or Policy: This study demonstrates the promise of a virtual kindergarten readiness program and suggests that the combination of educational media and video chat instruction may be effective for promoting children's skills. A virtual intervention could be beneficial in other contexts, such as in rural areas where it would be challenging for families to participate in an in-person program or for immunocompromised or seriously ill children who are unable to attend in person.

This study optimized the extraction conditions to maximize the recovery yields of quercetin and total flavonoids from red onion skin waste using sequential microwave/ultrasound-assisted extraction. Five effective factors of quercetin extraction yield were investigated using response surface methodology. The method was successfully performed under optimal 60 s microwave irradiation conditions followed by 15 min sonication at 70 °C with 70% (v/v, water) ethanol with a solvent-to-solid ratio of 30 mL/g. The variance analysis of the model for both quercetin (Y1) and total flavonoid (Y2) recovery from DOS demonstrated that ultrasound temperature (X2) was the most highly significant and influential factor, with a p-value of <0.0001 for both responses. Additionally, three key interaction terms—X1X2, X2X4, and X2X5—were identified as highly significant, further underscoring the critical role of ultrasound temperature in optimizing the extraction process for both quercetin and total flavonoids. The maximum recovery yields of quercetin and total flavonoids from red onion skin were 10.32% and 12.52%, respectively. The predicted values for quercetin (10.05%) and total flavonoids (12.72%) were very close to the experimental results. The recovery yields obtained from different extraction methods under the identical experimental conditions mentioned earlier were ultrasound/microwave-assisted extraction (7.66% quercetin and 10.18% total flavonoids), ultrasound-assisted extraction (5.36% quercetin and 8.34% total flavonoids), and microwave-assisted extraction (5.03% quercetin and 7.91% total flavonoids). The ANOVA confirmed highly significant regression models (p-values < 0.0001), with an insignificant lack of fit (p = 0.0515 for quercetin, p = 0.1276 for total flavonoids), demonstrating the robustness and reliability of the optimization. This study provides valuable insights for improving the extraction of bioactive compounds, which is critical for developing effective cancer treatments and advancing medical research. Molting is an evolutionarily ancient trait in which the outermost layer of an organism is replenished, usually according to a regular circannual rhythm. It is a metabolically costly process and, in vertebrates, is generally timed around other energetically demanding events such as reproduction and migration. In mammals, molting involves replacement of the fur coat—one of the most distinct innovations of the mammalian lineage. Despite the obvious importance of hair to mammalian fitness, our knowledge of hair growth cycles, circannual molting patterns, and hair structure remains largely restricted to marine and domesticated mammals, and our ability to identify explicit adaptive advantages of molting strategies in any mammal is therefore limited. In this review, we summarize what is known of these topics in wild, terrestrial mammals with a particular emphasis on marmots (Marmota spp.). Marmots are the largest extant ground squirrels and are well adapted to seasonally cold environments. Molting may be particularly relevant to fitness in marmots given the presumed importance of a healthy, insulative coat for metabolic efficiency in cold environments. Moreover, marmots hibernate for 7 to 8 months each year, meaning the annual molt and all other energetically demanding life-history events (such as parturition, lactation, fat accumulation, and dispersal) are constrained to an active period of only 4 to 5 months. Because the energetics of hibernation, fat accumulation, reproduction, and social behavior are already well studied, examining how molt is timed with respect to other important events and how it is influenced by local conditions may inform how molting is prioritized and how molting strategies evolve under specific selective pressures. Natural products have proven to be promising anti-cancer agents due to their diverse chemical structures and bioactivity. This review examines their central role in cancer treatment, focusing on their mechanisms of action and therapeutic benefits. Medicinal plants contain bioactive compounds, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, terpenoids and polyphenols, which exhibit various anticancer properties. These compounds induce apoptosis, inhibit cell proliferation and cell cycle progression, interfere with microtubule formation, act on topoisomerase targets, inhibit angiogenesis, modulate key signaling pathways, improve the tumor microenvironment, reverse drug resistance and activate immune cells. Herbal anti-cancer drugs offer therapeutic advantages, particularly selective toxicity against cancer cells, reducing the adverse side effects associated with conventional chemotherapy. Recent studies and clinical trials highlight the benefits of herbal medicines in alleviating side effects, improving tolerance to chemotherapy and the occurrence of synergistic effects with conventional treatments. For example, the herbal medicine SH003 was found to be safe and potentially effective in the treatment of solid cancers, while Fucoidan showed anti-inflammatory properties that are beneficial for patients with advanced cancer. The current research landscape on herbal anticancer agents is extensive. Numerous studies and clinical trials are investigating their efficacy, safety and mechanisms of action in various cancers such as lung, prostate, breast and hepatocellular carcinoma. Promising developments include the polypharmacological approach, combination therapies, immunomodulation and the improvement of quality of life. However, there are still challenges in the development and use of natural products as anti-cancer drugs, such as the need for further research into their mechanisms of action, possible drug interactions and optimal dosage. Standardizing herbal extracts, improving bioavailability and delivery, and overcoming regulatory and acceptance hurdles are critical issues that need to be addressed. Nonetheless, the promising anticancer effects and therapeutic benefits of natural products warrant further investigation and development. Multidisciplinary collaboration is essential to advance herbal cancer therapy and integrate these agents into mainstream cancer treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
