Abstract

To seismically isolate a structure, it is possible to interpose a rubber device between the foundation and superstructure that increases the period of the superstructure, a feature that allows the structure to be 'transparent' to the seismic excitation. A package of several rubber pads typically constitutes a seismic isolator; they are 10-20 mm thick vertically interspersed with either steel laminas or fiber-reinforced polymer dry textiles suitably treated. So, the rubber has a primary role and must be vulcanized correctly to create the polymer cross-linking properly. All rubber mechanical properties are strongly affected by curing temperature and curing time. Under vulcanization is a typical production error that suppliers make in large-scale productions, especially when the size of the devices is considerable. It is common to deal with elastomeric isolators where rubber pads have been treated at a largely suboptimal temperature. This article proposes a numerical model for predicting the cross-linking degree of rubber pads used in seismic isolation and made by a natural rubber-ethylene propylene diene monomer rubber compound. The aim is to correctly define the optimal curing temperature and exposition time for producing a rubber quadruple shear test specimen and a fiber reinforced elastomeric isolator (FREI). The model is a kinetic one and takes into consideration the induction time. An experimental investigation has been conducted to validate the model with visible inspections and hardness measurements taken on the rubber pads (quadruple shear specimens) and the rubber devices. The results have shown the reliability of the new numerical model proposed, with a homogeneous mechanical properties distribution obtained within the rubber pads and the FREI. Abstract

Many developing countries are located in earthquake-prone areas where buildings are often of poor design and not sufficiently protected against earthquakes. This causes damage or total collapse of buildings and heavy casualties whenever an earthquake occurs. Elastomeric isolators are special devices for the seismic isolation of structures. Typically, they consist of alternate layers of steel or fiber-reinforced laminas and rubber. They are positioned between the ground and the foundation to increase the structure's natural period and reduce the inertia forces applied in case of an earthquake. This study proposes a detailed 3D Finite Element (FE) modelling of elastomeric isolators for low-rise masonry buildings in developing countries, developed with the FE software code Abaqus. The isolator consists of an energy dissipation core made of relatively High Damping Rubber and an external Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) ring. In addition, it presents unbonded boundary conditions to reduce production costs and allow its applicability in developing countries. The upper and lower edges do not exhibit any bond with the supports. The main feature of such a device is the large deformability thanks to the roll-over deformation and the favourably lower lateral stiffness compared to the bonded isolator.

Abstract

Bamboo shoot (Phyllostachys pubescens) is mainly cultivated in China and Japan. It represents a reservoir of micro and macronutrients and contains a high amount of proteins, essential amino acids, phenolic acids, sterols, and fibers. Thank to these compounds, several beneficial health effects have been attributed to the bamboo shoot. This review is aimed at discussing a collection of research papers on Bamboo shoot in pharmaceutical and food fields. A particular focus is addressed to the chemical profile, the different biological activities, the different uses, the traditional recipes, the methods of conservation and the treatments of the shoot. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example of a comprehensive review that is focused exclusively on the applications of the shoot of bamboo Phyllostachys pubescens in different fields. Abstract

The vulnerability of masonry structures, especially when subjected to a changing of the load and boundary conditions, was evident since the antiqueness when the first interventions of reinforcement were designed. Lately, with the easy provision of innovative materials, the upgrade of the structural performance is often accomplished through the application of composite systems as FRP (fiber reinforced polymer) and TRM (textile reinforced mortar). In TRM systems, fibers having a high strength under tensions are embedded within an inorganic matrix. The wide range of materials (carbon, PBO, glass, basalt) that the industry put at disposal makes difficult a correct definition of the efficacy of such kind of reinforcement technique. Indeed, the literature showed the several failure typologies that can be encountered when a masonry element is reinforced with TRM. In the case of arches and vaults, the curvature itself complicates furthely a correct prediction. The paper wants to provide a reasonable way to model numerically curved masonry structures reinforced with TRM and explore the advantages and detriment of advanced simulation and simplified approaches. Abstract

The article presents the results obtained by using an analytical model herein slightly modified to study Near Surface Mounted (NSM) CFRP strengthening applied to brittle supports. To this scope, three sets of lab investigations comprising CFRPs applied to concrete and masonry pillars were considered. The lab investigations comprised testing of different CFRP strips characterized by various geometrical (cross section and bonding length) and mechanical parameters (elastic modulus). The interfacial tau-slip laws adopted in the analytical model were tuned using available experimental data and idealized bilinear laws proposed by the authors in the experimental campaigns. The reliability of the model was assessed by comparing the global force-slip curves obtained experimentally and analytically. Also, the analytical model allowed estimating the axial stress in the FRP strengthening, providing valuable information about the most probable failure mode (i.e., debonding or fiber failure). A global satisfactory agreement was found in all the set of tests studied with the proposed model. The analytical approach was able to accurately estimate the initial stiffness, peak load and post peak behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The article compares two numerical approaches with different levels of details used to simulate curved masonry supports subjected to single lap shear tests. The masonry pillars were strengthened on the extrados and on the intrados with TRM materials comprising a 100 mm wide PBO textile embedded into 10 mm thick mortar layer. The numerical analyses were carried out using two approaches: a heterogeneous micro modelling FE approach and a spring model approach. The first modelling strategy was developed using the commercial software Abaqus and it involved the separate modelling of the constituent materials (i.e., bricks and mortar joints) as well as the simulation of the PBO textile and mortar matrix. The second approach was specifically developed to analyze curved supports and it comprised the adoption of equivalent normal and shear springs used to model the components of specimens (support, matrix and reinforcement) and, moreover, the interface between reinforcement and matrix. It is worth mentioning that this numerical investigation is part of an ongoing experimental and numerical work focused on analyzing the effect of curved brittle supports on the adherence properties of innovative strengthening materials (i.e., FRPs) and herein extended to the adoption of TRM composites. In absence of a comprehensive experimental characterization of the TRM constituent materials, the mechanical properties of the textile and mortar matrix were deduced from available data provided by the manufacturer. Abstract

The ESA mission Comet Interceptor will target an Oort or interstellar comet during its first approach to the Sun. Meanwhile, the Vera Rubin LSST Survey will observe hundreds of active comets per month beyond 4 au from the Sun, where water vapor pressure is expected to be too low to eject dust. We discuss observations of dust tails at heliocentric distances larger than 4 au in order to retrieve the physical parameters driving cometary activity beyond Jupiter by means of a probabilistic tail model, which is consistent with the activity model defining the gas coma parameters due to the sublimation of carbon monoxide, molecular oxygen, methane, ethane and carbon dioxide since the activity onset at 85 au from the Sun. We find that: (i) All the observed dust tails are consistent with the adopted activity model; (ii) The tail fits depend on three free parameters only, all correlated to the nucleus size; (iii) Tail fits are always improved by anisotropic dust ejection, suggesting activity of Oort nuclei dominated by seasons; (iv) Inbound seasons suggest cometary activity before the ejection of protocomets into the Oort cloud, as predicted by the activity model; (v) Oort nuclei larger than 1 km may be characterized by a fallout up to ≈100 m thick deposited during ≈60 yr inbound; (vi) On the other side, Oort nuclei smaller than 1 km may appear more pristine than Jupiter Family Comets when observed at 1 au from the Sun.

Abstract

N.J.S. is partially funded by the Department of Veterans Affairs, Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) Partnered Evaluation Initiative Grant (HX002263-01A1). Background and objective : Enterobacteriaceae (EB) spp. family is known to include potentially multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms, and remains as an important cause of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) associated with high mortality. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and specific risk factors associated with EB and MDR-EB in a cohort of hospitalized adults with CAP. Methods : We performed a multinational, point-prevalence study of adult patients hospitalized with CAP. MDR-EB was defined when ≥3 antimicrobial classes were identified as non-susceptible. Risk factors assessment was also performed for patients with EB and MDR-EB infection. Results : Of the 3193 patients enrolled with CAP, 197 (6%) had a positive culture with EB. Fifty-one percent (n = 100) of EB were resistant to at least one antibiotic and 19% (n = 38) had MDR-EB. The most commonly EB identified were Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 111, 56%) and Escherichia coli (n = 56, 28%). Abstract

Objective: Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most frequent bacterial pathogen isolated in subjects with Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) worldwide. Limited data are available regarding the current global burden and risk factors associated with drug-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (DRSP) in CAP subjects. We assessed the multinational prevalence and risk factors for DRSP-CAP in a multinational point-prevalence study. Design: The prevalence of DRSP-CAP was assessed by identification of DRSP in blood or respiratory samples among adults hospitalized with CAP in 54 countries. Prevalence and risk factors were compared among subjects that had microbiological testing and antibiotic susceptibility data. Multivariate logistic regressions were used to identify risk factors independently associated with DRSP-CAP. Results: 3,193 subjects were included in the study. The global prevalence of DRSP-CAP was 1.3% and continental prevalence rates were 7.0% in Africa, 1.2% in Asia, and 1.0% in South America, Europe, and North America, respectively. Macrolide resistance was most frequently identified in subjects with DRSP-CAP (0.6%) followed by penicillin resistance (0.5%). Subjects in Africa were more likely to have DRSP-CAP (OR: 7.6; 95% CI: 3.34-15.35, p < 0.001) when compared to centres representing other continents. Conclusions: This multinational point-prevalence study found a low global prevalence of DRSP-CAP that may impact guideline development and antimicrobial policies. 49. Structural Evaluation of Typical Historical Masonry Vaults of Cagliari: Sensitivity to Bricks Arrangements

Abstract

Masonry vaults have a great diffusion in the historical architectural heritage: in this work, their structural behavior is investigated. Attention is focused on lowered sail vaults composed by several brick arrangements, a typical nineteenth-century masonry vault which have great diffusion in Cagliari (Sardinia). The target is evaluating the role played by bricks arrangement in their mechanical behavior. A series of rigorous laser scanner surveys have been performed in order to obtain the effective geometry both at macro-level – the vault shape – and at micro-level – brick patterns. A NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B Spline) representation of the geometry is adopted and adaptive upper bound limit analyses are performed. NURBS entities, which are common in commercial CAD packages, have the great advantage to describe complex geometries such as curved elements, with very few elements. An upper bound limit analysis formulation is adopted, in which the NURBS elements forming the mesh are idealized as rigid bodies with dissipation allowed only along interfaces. The mesh constituted by few NURBS elements is progressively adjusted through a genetic algorithm in order to minimize the live load multiplier. Limit analysis is performed initially to determine the collapse multiplier of vertical loads, to assess the load bearing capacity of the vault, then attention is focused on differential settlements, that may be a serious hazard for this structural typology.

50. A Novel Non-Linear Discrete Homogenization Approach for the Analysis of Double Curvature Masonry Structures

Abstract

In the context of historical heritage, curved masonry structures as arches, vaults and domes represent the most distinctive and charming feature. Since the 17th century, several approaches have been developed in order to analyze their behavior, achieving nowadays techniques enable to combine ancient and modern methods. However, as these elements act as weak points of the structures during seismic events, the necessity of evaluating their vulnerability and safety level pushed the research to implement new numerical approaches. Although, the behavior of such structures is still not deeply investigated in literature as the high number of variables and uncertainty involved. An innovative discrete homogenized model approach is here proposed. The method provides the main features needed for proper simulation of masonry curved structures, including the orthotropy and the typical in-and-out-of-plane coupled behavior exhibited by masonry vaults. Moreover, homogenization procedures directly implemented in the method allows reducing by far the number of variables, leading to non-linear analyses without unpractical computational time. The model is conceived as an assembly of elastic units joint by non-linear interfaces. These latter are modeled as bricks elements and Concrete Damage Plasticity is used for modeling non-linear mechanical properties, coming from homogenization procedures. The discrete mesh is obtained automatically by means of an ad-hoc script. With the aim to validate the proposed approach, some non-linear simulations are carried out on examples of an unreinforced dome, of which experimental and numerical data are available, showing the reliability of the method and the accuracy of reproducing the evolution of the damage with a limited computational burden.
