The paper presents the features of the magnetization decay of proton-irradiated MgB2 bulk samples. Irradiation was performed with protons of energies between 8.6 and 15.07 MeV at different fluences. The creep activation energy is sensitive to the ratio between proton range and sample thickness. Experimental data show that the creep exponents are different from the theoretical predictions. When the proton range is shorter than the sample thickness (protons of 8.6 MeV), the thermomagnetic instabilities are strongly emphasized and affect the creep behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

IInvestigating cognitive brain functions using non-invasive electrophysiology can be challenging due to the particularities of the task-related EEG activity, the depth of the activated brain areas, and the extent of the networks involved. Stereoelectroencephalographic (SEEG) investigations in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy offer an extraordinary opportunity to validate information derived from non-invasive recordings at macro-scales. The SEEG approach can provide brain activity with high spatial specificity during tasks that target specific cognitive processes (e.g., memory). Full validation is possible only when performing simultaneous scalp SEEG recordings, which allows recording signals in the exact same brain state. This is the approach we have taken in 12 subjects performing a visualmemory task that requires the recognition of previously viewed objects. The intracranial signals on 965 contact pairs have been compared to 391 simultaneously recorded scalp signals at a regional and whole-brain level, using multivariate pattern analysis. The results show that the task conditions are best captured by intracranial sensors, despite the limited spatial coverage of SEEG electrodes, compared to the whole-brain non-invasive recordings. Applying beamformer source reconstruction or independent component analysis does not result in an improvement of the multivariate task decoding performance using surface sensor data. By analyzing a joint scalp and SEEG dataset, we investigated whether the two types of signals carry complementary information that might improve the machine-learning classifier performance. Direct electrical stimulation (DES) is considered to be the gold standard for mapping cortical function. A careful mapping of the eloquent cortex is key to successful resective or ablative surgeries, with a minimal postoperative deficit, for treatment of drug‐resistant epilepsy. There is accumulating evidence suggesting that not only local, but also remote activations play an equally important role in evoking clinical effects. By introducing a new intracranial stimulation paradigm and signal analysis methodology allowing to disambiguate EEG responses from stimulation artifacts we highlight the spatial extent of the networks associated with clinical effects. Our study includes 26 patients that underwent stereoelectroencephalographic investigations for drug‐resistant epilepsy, having 337 depth electrodes with 4,351 contacts sampling most brain structures. The routine high‐frequency electrical stimulation protocol for eloquent cortex mapping was altered in a subtle way, by alternating the polarity of the biphasic pulses in a train, causing the splitting the spectral lines of the artifactual components, exposing the underlying tissue response. By performing a frequency‐domain analysis of the EEG responses during DES we were able to capture remote activations and highlight the effect's network. By using standard intersubject averaging and a fine granularity HCP‐MMP parcellation, we were able to create local and distant connectivity maps for 614 stimulations evoking specific clinical effects. The clinical value of such maps is not only for a better understanding of the extent of the effects' networks guiding the invasive exploration, but also for understanding the spatial patterns of seizure propagation given the timeline of the seizure semiology. Background. Stem cell transplantation is an important therapeutic approach for patients with malignant hemopathies, whether we refer to autologous or allogeneic stem cell transplantation. Aims and methods. We present the characteristics of a group of 54 patients diagnosed with malignant haemopathy in the Department of Hematology of the Colentina Clinical Hospital, between 2004 and 2018, and who have benefited from stem cell transplantation both in the country and abroad. The data analyzed were: diagnosis of the disease, type of response to induction therapy, type and timing of transplantation, transplant in first remission or relapse, if there were patients who benefited from a second transplant, post-transplant survival, as well as demographics. The statistical analysis was performed using the system MedCalc Statistical Software Version 18.11.3. Results and conclusions. Survival analysis was applied separately for autotransplant patients and those who benefited from allotransplant (Kaplan Meier survival analyses). Significant differences were observed due to transplantation type and due to relapse after transplant, in our lot of patients. Post-transplant recurrence was an unfavorable prognostic factor for both autologous and allogeneic transplanted patients. Update. A new challenge: The COVID-19 pandemic threat. The SARS-CoV-2 infection is a threat for immunocompromised patients. From a group of 9 patients hospitalized in 2020 for COVID-19 in the Department of Hematology of the Colentina Clinical Hospital, and who have benefited in the past from stem cell transplantation (2 patients) or organ transplant (1 patient – lung, 3 patients – liver, 3 patients – kidney) in Romania, 4 of them have required hospitalization in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) (authors's observational data). New data are needed to elucidate the prognostic factors to establish the outcome of transplant patients such as for all cancer patients or immunocompromised patients in the current COVID pandemic 19 era and the impact on public health. National Institute for Physics and Nuclear Engineering (NIPNE) Romania is located in Măgurele and approximately 10 km from Bucharest. A continued surveillance over the past 10 years offers the opportunity to verify the tritium releases, but also for development of monitoring methods. The determined levels are well below the maximum admissible limits for environmental samples. Dose values have no impact on the environment and have an insignificant contribution to the cumulative annual dose. Comparison with global, regional and zonal levels highlights the role played by its emissions in the Lower Danube Basin, the Romanian Plain and the Danube Meadow. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a case of a 39-year-old male patient diagnosed with Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph+ ALL) who relapse in unusual extramedullary site like bone. The patient was admitted complaining of intense pain in the left thigh 1 year following complete remission. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed abnormal multifocal involvement in the left femur suggested malignancy. Bone marrow aspiration indicated recurrence of leukemic cells. Background. With the latest COVID-19 deaths reported to WHO now exceeding 3.3 million, COVID-19 has developed into a milestone of our medical generation, causing disruption in communities and hospital services. With complications raging from respiratory failure to inflammatory complication and even thrombotic events, we wanted to establish if lymphopenia is a predictive marker of disease severity in patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. Material and methods. 152 patients were included from 4 different departments of Colentina Clinical Hospital in this retrospective observational study beginning with July 2020 to March 2021. All of these patients were confirmed with COVID-19 by real-time reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction test for nasal and pharyngeal swab samples. As including criteria we have set the patients hospitalized confirmed with COVID-19, with at least 10 days of hospitalization. The data in demographic, basic clinical and laboratory characteristics and particular evolution was obtained from electronical medical records from each department involved in the study, by maintaining personal data confidentially. We set up criteria for lymphopenia as absolute lymphocyte count below 1.5 x 1000/μl, based on the laboratory reference values. The study group was divided into several groups: male and female, ICU (Intensive Care Unit) and non-ICU, deceased and released, lymphopenia at day 1 (day of admission to hospital), lymphopenia at day 10 (10 days after hospital admission). Results. The age of the patients ranged from 17 to 92, with the median age of 57.62. Enrolled were 73 (47.4%) female patients and 79 (52.6%) male patients, with an ICU admission rate of 35.71% (55 patients), and a mortality rate of 21.43% (33 patients). Patients who have a severe form of COVID-19 and are admitted to the ICU for mechanical ventilation did not recover and died (p < 0.001). Male patients may have higher risk of requiring admission in ICU (p value = 0.357) and higher risk of death (p value = 0.241). Even in our small group of 152 patients, the elderly patients suffered a more severe form of the disease, which was reflected on the number of admission days (p = 0.07). In our specific population, based on the statistics, if we take the number of lymphocytes on the day of admission as the dependent factor, we can safely say that there is a statistically significant correlation between lymphopenia at day 1 and the ICU admission (p < 0.001) or death (p = 0.014). The number of lymphocytes following 10 days of admission is another prognostic marker as we can see from the results of statistic tests: there is a statistically significant correlation between lymphopenia at day 10 and the ICU admission (p < 0.001) or death (p < 0.001). Age is another predictive factor regarding the number of lymphocytes following 10 days of admission (r = -0.078 and p = 0.356). Conclusion. Lymphopenia is an easy-to-determine, efficient and reliable biomarker to establish the disease evolution in patients with COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The 2016 WHO-CMP classification proposal defines a broad spectrum of JAK2 V617F mutated MPN phenotypes: normocellular ET, hypercellular ET due to increased erythropoiesis (prodromal PV), hypercellular ET with megakaryocytic-granulocytic myeloproliferation and splenomegaly (EMGM or masked PV), erythrocythemic PV, early and overt classical PV, advanced PV with MF and post-PV MF. ET heterozygous for the JAK2 V617F mutation is associated with low JAK2 mutation load and normal life expectance. PV patients are hetero-homozygous versus homozygous for the JAK2 V617F mutation in their early versus advanced stages with increasing JAK2 mutation load from less than 50% to 100% and increase of MPN disease burden during life long follow-up in terms of symptomatic splenomegaly, constitutional symptoms, bone marrow hypercellularity and secondary MF. Pretreatment bone marrow biopsy in prefibrotic MPNs is of diagnostic and prognostic importance. JAK2 exon 12 mutated MPN is a distinct benign early stage PV. CALR mutated hypercellular thrombocythemia show distinct PMGM bone marrow characteristics of clustered larged immature dysmorphic megakaryocytes with bulky (bulbous) hyperchromatic nuclei, which are not seen in JAK2 mutated ET and PV. MPL mutated normocellular thrombocythemia is featured by clustered giant megakaryocytes with hyperlobulated stag-horn-like nuclei without features of PV in blood and bone marrow. Myeloproliferative disease burden in each of the JAK2, CALR and MPL MPNs is best reflected by the degree of anemia, splenomegaly, mutation allele burden, bone marrow cellularity and myelofibrosis. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is a malignant neoplasm of the lymphocyte precursor cells. Among adults it is a relatively rare neoplasm with a curability rate around 30% at 5 years. Currently, the diagnosis and classification of ALL is a multistep procedure that relies on the simultaneous application of multiple techniques that include: cytomorphology, immunophenotype and cytogenetic assays. Some of them have important clinical implications for both diagnosis and predicting response to specific treatment regimens, while the role of others is still to be defined. Over the years, several prognostic factors have been identified and today a risk stratification at diagnosis and during the follow-up is based on the characteristics of the leukemic cells.
