The psychometric properties of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST), a commonly used self‐report screening instrument for symptom identification of problematic drinking and alcoholism, were explored. A total of 103 studies meeting inclusion criteria were reviewed and analyzed. Results for reliability, validity, and nonclinical descriptive statistics for the MAST are reported. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine whether a link exists between early maladaptive schemas identified by Young et al. and depression in alcoholics. The relationships of schemas with selected alcohol dependence variables and suicidal thoughts in alcoholics were also checked. Material and methods: Seventy-seven alcohol addicts participated in the study - 19 women and 58 men. Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ-S3), Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) and Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) were used. Results: Based on the results obtained, 16 out of 18 schemas are positively and statistically correlated with depression among alcoholics. The strongest relationships were noted for emotional deprivation, social isolation/alienation and subjugation. Correlations between the schemas and the severity of addiction and the age of drinking initiation were also found. Differences in the intensity of some schemas occurred between people experiencing suicidal thoughts and people without these thoughts. Conclusions: There is a need to consider inclusion therapy focused on changing maladaptive schemas in alcoholics. Background: Previous studies suggest that alcohol dependence is associated with increased risk of depression. The occurrence of depressive symptoms is related to polymorphisms in various genetic regions. This study aimed to investigate the interaction of RETN gene polymorphisms (rs1477341, rs3745368) with alcohol dependence on depressive symptoms in adult male during acute alcohol withdrawal., Methods: A total of 429 male adults were recruited in this study. Alcohol dependence was assessed using the Michigan alcoholism screening test (MAST). Depression was assessed using the 20-item self-rating depression scale (SDS). Hierarchical regression analysis was used to evaluate the interaction between genes and alcohol dependence on depression. Region of significance (ROS) test was used to explain the interaction effect. The strong and weak forms of the differential susceptibility and diathesis models were used to determine which fits the data better., Results: Our results showed that MAST scores were significantly positively associated with SDS scores (r = 0.23, p < 0.01) in alcohol-dependent patients during alcohol withdrawal. The interaction between genotype and alcohol dependence was significant (β = -0.14, p < 0.05) in a strong diathesis-stress model. Susceptibility for depression symptoms was associated with alcohol dependence in RETN rs1477341 A carriers. Specifically, those that showed more alcohol dependence and the A allele of RETN rs1477341 exhibited more depression symptoms. However, RETN rs3745368 had no significant interaction with alcohol dependence., Conclusions: The A allele of RETN rs1477341 may correlate with susceptibility to depression symptoms in alcohol-dependent individuals during acute alcohol withdrawal., (© 2023 The Authors. The study investigates the distribution of chronotypes among alcohol-dependent subjects and the relationship between personality and chronotype. Fifty-eight alcohol-dependent patients and 29 age-matched healthy controls were studied using Ogińska’s Chronotype Questionnaire (ChQ), Eysenck’s Personality Questionnaire – Revised (EPQ-R), Selzer’s Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) and a sociodemographic status questionnaire designed by the authors. The alcohol-dependent patients tended to be morning type, based on the morningness–eveningness ChQ scale, with a weakly marked rhythm, based on the distinctness ChQ scale. Preference towards morningness was associated with older age, but no relation between chronotype and severity of alcohol dependence was found. A high amplitude of the rhythm was associated with higher neuroticism. Therefore, despite being in the minority, patients with a distinct circadian rhythm (i.e. with a high amplitude) are at greater risk of mood and anxiety disorders and hence should be given special consideration. Background and Objectives: The ways in which homeless individuals cope with stress may differ from those relied upon by the members of the general population and these differences may either be the result or the cause of their living conditions. The aim of the study was to determine the preferred coping style among the homeless and its relationship with alcohol dependence. Methods: The study included 78 homeless individuals and involved the collection of demographic, sociological, psychological and medical data from each participant. Coping styles relied upon when dealing with stressful situations were assessed using a Polish adaptation of the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations. Alcohol dependence was assessed using the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) and a quantitative analysis of alcohol consumption. Results: Men accounted for 91.93% of the study population. Nearly 75% of the subjects met the alcohol dependence criterion. Significant relationships were observed between the individual's age, preferred coping style and alcohol consumption level. As an individual’s age increased, the use of emotion-oriented coping styles decreased, while an increase in alcohol consumption was associated with a more frequent use of emotion- and avoidance-oriented strategies. Conclusions: The findings of this study, similarly to those of many other studies of homeless individuals but investigating other areas (e.g. epidemiology of tuberculosis and traumatic injuries), are an exaggerated representation of associations observed in the general population. The results describe a group of people living on the margins of the society, often suffering from extremely advanced alcoholism, with clear evident psychodegradation. The presence of specific ways of coping with stress related to excessive alcohol consumption in this group of individuals may interfere with active participation in support programmes provided for the homeless and may further exacerbate their problems. Disordered gambling and alcohol dependence are influenced by unique and shared genetic factors. Although the evidence is mixed, some research has linked catechol- O-methyltransferase (COMT) rs4680 (or COMT Val158Met) to the development of gambling or drinking problems; however, no molecular genetic study has jointly examined gambling and drinking problems. Furthermore, the majority of past studies examined gambling or drinking problems using a case-control design. The purpose of the current study was to examine associations of COMT rs4680 with dimensionally and categorically measured gambling and drinking problems in a nonclinical sample (139 Caucasian adults). The current study found that COMT rs4680 was related to both dimensionally and categorically measured gambling and drinking problems. Objective The aim of the present study was to determine the distinct clusters of subtypes among patients with bipolar disorder (BD) and the relationship between the clinical features of BD patients, particularly substance use disorders (SUDs) and the clusters. Method The present study initially assessed 96 inpatients who were hospitalized in the psychiatric clinic of Bakırköy Prof. Mazhar Osman Training and Research Hospital for Psychiatry and Neurology, for a BD manic episode. All patients were evaluated during the initial 3 days of their admission using the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), the Montgomery–Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS),the Scale for the Assessment of Positive Symptoms (SAPS), the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The factor structures of the psychopathological scale items were determined with factor analyses and based on the factor loadings, cluster analyses were performed. The relationships among the clusters and the clinical variables were then evaluated. Results The factor analyses generated three factors: increased psychomotor activity, dysphoria, and psychosis. A hierarchical cluster analysis was applied to the three factor loadings, and revealed that factor 1 (increased psychomotor activity) was high in cluster 1 and that the effects of factors 2 (dysphoria) and 3 (psychosis) were high in cluster 2. Within cluster 1 (Psychomotor elevation), 39% of patients were diagnosed with an alcohol use disorder while 31.6% of patients in the cluster 2 (dysphoric–psychotic) were diagnosed with both alcohol and cannabis use disorders. Within cluster 2 (dysphoric–psychotic), 47.4% of patients had one suicide attempt and 21.1% of patients had two or more attempts during their lifetime. Conclusion There was a significant difference in the presence of SUDs between patients with psychomotor elevation and patients in dysphoric–psychotic cluster. This may be point out that pure manic patients with BD self-medicate using the sedative effects of alcohol and the causal relationship between cannabis and psychosis. Objective: The objective of this study was to develop a practical questionnaire for multidimensional assessment of problems associated with alcohol and substance abuse that would also be useful for treatment planning. Materials and Methods: The Addiction Profile Index (API) is a self-report questionnaire consisting of 37 items and the following 5 subscales: characteristics of substance use; dependency diagnosis; the effects of substance use on the user; craving; motivation to quit using substances. The study included 345 alcohol and/or substance abusers from 2 addiction treatment clinics and a prison addiction service. The validity of the questionnaire was assessed using the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST), Readiness to Change Questionnaire (SOCRATES), Penn Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS), Drug Craving Scale (DCS), Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I Disorders (SCID-I), and Addiction Severity Index (ASI). Results: The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the total API was 0.89 and for the subscales it ranged from 0.63 to 0.86. Item-total correlation coefficients ranged from 0.42 to 0.89. The Spearman Brown split-half method coefficient for the total API was 0.83. In all, 4 factors were obtained using explanatory factor analysis that represented 52.3% of the total variance. The API craving subscale was observed to be consistent with PACS and the API motivation subscale was consistent with SOCRATES. The API total score was strongly correlated with the mean MAST score, and the composite ASI medical status, substance use, legal status, and family social relations subscale scores. Based on ROC analyses, the area under curve was 0.90. With a total API cut-off score of 4, the scale's sensitivity and specificity 0.85 was 0.78, respectively. Objectives: In this study, we aimed to evaluate alcohol consumption of Turkish rheumatic patients. Patients and methods: A total of 332 subjects [185 males and 147 females; mean ages of 41.2 (95% CI 39.5- 43.0) and 45.2 (95% CI 43.4-47.1) years, respectively] with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and healthy controls were questioned regarding their alcohol habits. Alcohol consumers were asked to fill out the Turkish version of the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST). Results: A total of 37.3% of all subjects were alcohol consumers. Nearly 50% of males and 20% of females drank alcohol. Rheumatoid arthritis group had the lowest rate of alcohol consumption (23.0%), while healthy controls had the highest rate (45.6%). The mean MAST scores were 3.02 (95% CI: 2.36-3.69) and 3.13 (95% CI: 1.76-4.5) for the AS and RA groups, respectively, indicating statistically lower rate compared to the healthy controls [4.94 (95% CI: 4.14-5.73) (p<0.001)]. An analysis of the MAST scores by categories revealed that most of the alcohol abusers / alcoholics were in the healthy control group. Conclusion: Our results showed that alcohol consumption, an important public health problem, has not been regarded as a major issue for the patients with rheumatic diseases. Introduction and Aims. Aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship of relapse with impulsivity, novelty seeking (NS) and craving during 12 month follow up after inpatient treatment in male alcohol dependents. Design and Methods. Among 156 consecutively admitted male alcohol dependents, 102 were examined by face to face interview 12 months after discharge from hospital. Patients were investigated with the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, version 11 (BIS-11), the NS dimension of the Temperament and Character Inventory, the Penn Alcohol Craving Scale (PACS) and Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test at the end of 12 months. Results. Among 102 alcohol-dependent inpatients 61.8% (n = 63) were considered as relapsed to alcohol use during 12 month follow up. Sociodemographic variables did not differ between relapsed and non-relapsed groups. Mean scores of BIS-11 and NS and subscales of these scales were higher in relapsed group than non-relapsed group. BIS-11 and NS and their subscales were positively correlated with each other. PACS was also positively correlated with these scales and their subscales. Only exception was 'exploratory excitability' (NS1) subscale of NS, which did not differ between groups and did not correlate with PACS or BIS-11. Extravagance (NS3) and BIS-11 non-planning impulsiveness (NPI) scores were associated with craving in Stepwise Linear Regression model. Only NS3 showed an association with relapse in the first Forward Wald logistic regression model. When severity of craving was included in the second model, as an independent variable, it was also associated with relapse additional to NS3. Discussion and Conclusions. Both impulsivity and NS seem to be related with craving and relapse. Particularly, NS3 may be related with relapse both directly and indirectly via craving, whereas NPI may be related with relapse only indirectly via craving. Thus severity of craving may be a final pathway to relapse in these relationships of NS3 and NPI with relapse. Meta-analytic methods provide a framework around which an inquiry into MAST and SMAST score reliability was completed. Of the 470 measurement opportunities observed between 1971 and 2005, 62 (13.2%) were coupled with accurate reliability information. Weighted reliability estimates centered on .80 suggesting that the MAST and SMAST generally produce scores of similar and adequate reliability for most research purposes. However, the variability of internal consistency estimates shows that at times these tools will not produce reliable scores, particularly among female and nonclinical respondents. Abstract A case–control study on the relationship between alcohol dehydrogenase-2 (ADH2), aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) and male probable alcohol use disorders (AUD) was performed in Khon Kaen, north-east Thailand. One hundred and fifty-three paired cases (probable AUD) and controls (non-probable AUD) were sampled from villagers aged 18–65 years using the modified Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test - Thai version, controls being matched for gender, age (± 4 years) and village. All of the cases and 86.9% of the controls were current drinkers. The percentage of ADH2*1/1 among cases was 47.1%, being significantly larger than the 29.4% among controls, and yielding a univariate odds ratio (OR) of 2.421* (95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.419–4.132) for developing probable AUD. The ALDH2*1/1 proportion among cases, 92.8%, was comparable to the 92.2% among controls, yielding a univariate OR of 1.100 (95%CI = 0.757–1.599). Multivariate analysis based on a conditional logistic regression model and a hierarchically well-formulated model strategy revealed that: (i) the OR of developing probable AUD due to 1 g increment of daily ethanol drinking was 1.110* among farmers (95%CI = 1.054–1.170); (ii) OR due to 1 g increment of daily ethanol drinking was 1.329* among non-farmers (95%CI = 1.109–1.593); (iii) OR due to either ADH2*1/1 or ALDH2*1/1 was insignificant; and (iv) the daily amount of smoking is independently associated with probable AUD. OBJECTIVES: To determine (1) the extent of agreement between the CAGE (acronym for c ut down, a nnoyed by criticism, g uilty about drinking, e ye-opener drinks) and the Short Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test—Geriatric Version (SMAST-G) in identifying older persons who may have possible alcohol use disorders (AUDs) and (2) whether persons identified as having possible AUDs by each of these screening measures differ in their drinking, demographic, or health-related characteristics. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study using data from a self-administered mailed survey sample. SETTING: Three organizations were surveyed: (1) members of the American Association of Retired Persons and, in southern California, (2) managed care enrollees in a large medical group and (3) attendees of a community-based senior health center. PARTICIPANTS: One thousand eight hundred eighty-nine persons aged 55 and older completing a health risk appraisal for older persons (Health Risk Appraisal for the Elderly (HRA-E)). MEASUREMENTS: The HRA-E included items on drinking behaviors (including amount of alcohol use, the CAGE, and the SMAST-G) and health and demographic characteristics. RESULTS: Twenty-six percent of all persons screened positive on the CAGE or the SMAST-G. Fewer than half of all persons screening positive on either the CAGE or the SMAST-G, screened positive on both measures. Among current drinkers, persons screening positive on the SMAST-G alone drank less than persons screening positive on the CAGE alone, and these persons drank less than those screening positive on both the SMAST-G and the CAGE. More men screened positive on the CAGE alone than on the SMAST-G alone. CONCLUSION: Fewer than half of persons screening positive on either the CAGE or the SMAST-G screened positive on both measures, suggesting that these instruments may be capturing different aspects of unsafe drinking. AbstractA genetic epidemiological case-control study on aldehyde dehydrogenase 2 (ALDH2) genotype and male probable alcohol use disorders (AUD) was performed in Khon Kaen province, north-east Thailand. One hundred and twenty-four of cases (probable AUD) were obtained from male villagers aged 18–65 years using the modified Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test-Thai version. The same number of controls were selected, being matched with the cases in terms of age (±4 years) within the same village. Marital status, education history and past or present histories of physical illnesses were essentially the same for the cases and the controls. All of the cases and 85.5% of the controls were current drinkers, and the cases tended to drink significantly more often than the controls. Genomic DNA was extracted from fingernails and ALDH2 genotypes were determined by polymerase chain reaction technique and digested by Ksp 632I. The ALDH2 genotypes of the cases and the controls were not significantly different: 90.3% versus 91.1% normal homozygote; 8.1% versus 8.9% heterozygote; and 1.6% versus 0.0% mutant homozygote, respectively. Among the normal homozygote, the daily amount of alcohol intakes of the cases were significantly larger than that of the controls (56.2 ± 40.6 g vs 8.1 ± 14.1 g), the same was found among the ALDH2 deficient (55.9 ± 43.4 vs 2.2 ± 5.8 g). Multivariate analysis based on the conditional logistic regression model showed no significant association of AUD with ALDH2 genotype, marital status, education history, or past history of injury, however, occupation and daily amount of alcohol intake were found to be significantly associated with AUD (OR = 10.72, 95% CI = 1.15 - 99.99, p = 0.037, and OR = 1.12, 95% CI = 1.06 - 1.18, p = 0.000, respectively). Non-farmers showed 10.7 times larger risk of developing AUD compared to farmers, and the subjects had three times more chance of developing AUD for each increase of 10 g of the daily amount of alcohol intake. This article presents a study, which examined the relationship between the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test, Psychological Screening Inventory (PSI) and Locus of Control (LOC) Scale within the DWI population. A subsidiary goal was to identify the dimensions of psychological maladjustment that best predicted individual differences in alcohol-related problems on the MAST. Scores on the MAST were independent of LOC, but positively related to results on PSI scales that assess antisocial acting-out and neurotic anxiety and also to general maladjustment. A weighted composite of three PSI scales was related significantly to MAST scores, but explained only a modest proportion of variance in them. The MAST and PSI can be used to supplement one another in screening DWI offenders.

The authors examined the differenees between a self-administered and counselor-administered Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test and the status accorded the score in determining diagnosis. It was found that interpretive work by counselors and clients led to a number of changed answers from first to second testing. It was further found that, since the counselors took into account supplementary information not provided by the test score alone, they frequently established a diagnosis that differed from the one indicated by the lest they had administered. Objective: To assess the validity of the CAGE (cut down, annoyed, guilty feelings, eye-opener) questionnaire and the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST) in distinguishing between elderly patients with and without alcohol abuse or dependence disorders. Design: A cross-sectional study, in which patients were interviewed with a 'gold standard,' the alcohol module of the Revised Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS-III-R), and two screening questionnaires: the CAGE and the MAST. Setting: The study was conducted in the outpatient medical practice of a university teaching hospital. Patients: All English-speaking continuity patients 65 years of age or older able to participate were eligible; complete data were available for 154 (91%) of the 170 people who agreed to participate. Results: Sixty-seven patients (44%) were active drinkers, whereas 87 (56%) reported abstinence. Twenty-five patients (16%) met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-III-Revised (DSM-III-R) criteria for alcohol abuse or dependence. A CAGE score of 2, the conventional cutoff point, had a sensitivity and a specificity of 48% and 99%, respectively. A MAST score of 5, the originally recommended cutoff point, had a sensitivity and a specificity of 52% and 91%, respectively. The areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were 0.91 for the CAGE and 0.61 for the MAST. Conclusion: The CAGE and the MAST were both characterized by low sensitivities at conventional cufoff points, but the CAGE was significantly more effective than the MAST in discriminating between elderly medical outpatients with and without alcohol abuse or dependence.
